This got excellent reviews and was only a stones throw from my hotel so I figured I would check it out. Let me preface by saying that gin and tonic is not my drink of choice -- I'm from the USA where it's often made kind of blah so I can take it or leave it, and generally don't order it. But I kind of wanted a drink, and I'm not a beer or whiskey fan and it was one of the only other "Irish" things on the menu. WOW. Wow. I actually said "holy crap!" when I took my first sip. Hands-down this is the best gin and tonic I've ever had. It came with a sprig of rosemary, which completely altered and complemented the taste of the drink. I might just be a gin and tonic girl now. Dinner was good - The lamb stew and dumplings were nice and hit the spot (the portions may look small but my god they are filling), and the waitstaff was friendly. Made a reservation at 8:45pm. Our tour ended early so we went to the restaurant early. They seated us about 45 mins early without any wait, so that was nice! Our waitress was quick to take our orders. My boyfriend and I split the seafood chowder. It had some good salmon chunks and was hot (perfect because it was a cold/rainy day). The chowder was a little on the watery side for my liking (would prefer a more creamy texture). I got the salmon boxty for my entree. The salmon was mostly tender except for a few bites in the middle. The boxty was interesting. It had a pancake-like texture and was flavored by a fennel creamy sauce. For dessert, we tried the sticky toffee pudding. It was super sweet. It was hot, so the ice cream was a perfect contrast. The bottom of the dessert was hard (it seemed a little too burnt). We were lucky enough to eat at this place during a Dublin food tour and it was amazing. We all had the coddle stew and I've never had anything like it before. You can't really go wrong with sausage, bacon, and potatoes in my mind, but they brought it to a new level. The three different types of bread served with it were all delicious too. So we got in really late to Temple Bar Dublin and we were looking for some local and just traditional Irish food. When I travel, I like to try to eat the local dish and national dishes. We tried to go to one spot but it was closed down, but happen to run into this Boxty place. Surprisingly, we met a man that told us the owner actually cooks the food, so no wonder it was so good! I ended up getting traditional Irish Stew and some cabbage, I'd have to say the cabbage wasn't too good, I think it was a bit dry and not enough flavor. But the STEW was damn good, just what I needed after a 2 week travel and drink binge, it was super hearty and flavorful. It's beef in case you don't eat beef. The staff was really nice too, my boy forgot his cigar at the table so we had to go back and one of the nice ladies held onto it for him. read more

We had a great dinner here our first night in Dublin. We started off with the assortment of breads all of which were delicious and accompanied by excellent butter. Seriously, don't skip the bread here; thank me later! Their house beers were great; I enjoyed a Jack Smyth IPA which is richer and smoother than the typical versions in the US and went nicely with my dinner. I had a bowl of the carrot soup as part of the Early Bird special and it was fresh and not too heavy. For my entree I had the corned beef and dumplings which was delicious. The corned beef was so tender and flavorful and the dumplings reminded me of gnocchi which makes sense, since I think those are traditionally made with potato as well. The sauce was tasty and not too heavy/rich. I tried some of the lamb boxty as well and that was wonderful too. We were all too full for dessert, but the choices looked so tempting. Boxty house is all that and more. Very Irish menu of food & drink. Still my 100 % clear on what Boxty is. We had several different iterations of what was supposed to be Boxty. It was like a pancake. The dish I had was some nicely cooked beef filet medallions in what tasted like a mushroom sauce over the Boxty pancake. Very tasty and filling. Really loved their corn beef that a member of our party ordered. Probably the gold standard in corned beef. Super tender and very flavorful without being too salty. When ordering a whiskey, I ordered a Jameson, and my waiter promptly explained that I should be ordering the Red Breast instead. He was right, the red breast was better. This is famous for having been on TV. It was a good show. And Phil goes to a lot of places to eat. When in Dublin he went to Boxty. It is famous for potatoes. But then there are many restaurants in Ireland famous for potatoes. It is a part of the diet. The crowd was big here. We were lucky to get in. Of course, we had to go downstairs to get one of the last tables. The service was fair. Not exactly fast. It took 10 minutes before we got the menu to consider what to order. We ordered a cocktail and beer to start. Then we looked at the menu to order for the three of us. Then we waited. And waited. And waited. That took over 30 minutes to even receive the appetizer. Then we waited and waited. By the time we ordered to the time we started dinner took over 90 minutes. Not fast here. As for the food, it was fine. It was fresh. The potatoes were the potatoes. This is what they are famous for. It is nothing new. Just named for the TV show it was on. They asked if we wanted dessert. We already spent enough time here so we asked for the bill. Then we waited and waited. My wife went upstairs to wait and I took care of everything else. We then left and went to the Palace Pub for a beer. We sat at the counter and it took only 5 minutes to get. That was perfect. It was fine to visit. But I can get my potato salad at home. read more

The 3rd place in Dublin where I ordered fish and chips and the worst of the bunch. A single piece of fish which tasted like a frozen and warmed Gorton's product. Absolutely flavorless. Boxty is an institution in the Temple/Trinity area. It's a cozy nice spot that highlights and features boxty dishes. The boxty wasn't for me, but I wasn't mad at it. I'm team soda bread or american style pancakes with my breakie personally, but that's me. That said I did get it with a cut of beef with mushroom gravy and that was exquisitely prepared. We also got a side of their roasted and glazed carrots which I devoured a whole dish of. So all and all I was quite full and happy at the end so no real complaints. Went here on a busy night, it was our first night in Dublin and we had been turned away from a couple other places since we didn't have a reservation. My favorite meal from our two weeks in Ireland. Spouse liked it so much that one evening he went back for another meal! And I didn't even have the boxty - I had the fish and chips, which were excellent, far better than any other fish and chips I had in Ireland, and gluten free to boot. The bartender made an excellent whiskey sour and was entirely personable as we sat at the bar, spouse had the Gaelic boxty and was resistant to sharing, and M had a full Irish breakfast. Saw this place featured on the Netflix Show "Somebody Feed Phil" and it looked unique and very Irish -- so we checked it out. Doesn't look like much when you walk by -- but they have a large downstairs seating area as well. Boxty is similar to a potato pancake but they serve it with chicken, steak, or other proteins/veggies. It's a bit expensive for what it is -- but hey -- you're on vacation. Service was very good and we were glad we tried this Irish dish. We arrived late and walked in -- but I think it can get pretty busy as it's in Temple Bar district. So good that we've been here twice in as many days! Three solid vegetarian options. I got the dumplings and sweet potatoes on day 1, which was so good, if a bit heavy. I couldn't stop eating it though. Day 2 I got the goat cheese beet salad with bread assortment, and finally got my Irish butter that I've been craving! Social norms being what they are, I couldn't rub it all over myself, so I ate it with my bread instead. The beer and soda breads were so dense and delicious, with a heady bitterness that worked perfectly with the sweet creaminess of the butter.
