A perfect meal for my husband and me. We arrived late, due to a flight delay, but they held our reservation. Bless them. We got a seat by the window- could look at the characters passing through Temple Bar as we ate. Our waiter was friendly and quick- and in no time we had both beer and food. I had the lamb stew. Wonderful. Filling. Spiced just right with lots of carrots and potatoes. Served with whole grain soda bread- also delicious. It is a big big bowl of soup and I ate every drop. I was a little reluctant to come here for dinner. The food seemed expensive for what it was, and so I thought the Boxty House would be a major tourist trap. However, I was pleasantly surprised. My husband and I split the Gaelic Boxty and the Stew Platter. Our food came out freakishly quickly, but I suppose they weren't too crowded and everything we ordered was already cooked except for the beef in the Boxty. The beef medallions in the Gaelic Boxty were cooked to order, and they came out perfectly medium rare. They were wrapped in a delicious, soft, potato pancake, which had the texture of a crepe but was much thicker and more savory. The boxty was smothered in a creamy whiskey and mushroom sauce. It had just the right amount of peppercorn, giving it a nice spice. This meal was huge and utterly delicious. It was served with a side salad on the plate that was really more for garnish/ creating an illusion of a nutritionally balanced meal. It doesn't really enhance the meal or work well with the sauce. I would have preferred some hearty cooked vegetables like squash or spinach. The stew platter came with 3 generously sized stews: Dublin Coddle, Irish Stew, and Beef and stout. Each stew had a different meat in it. Pork sausage in the coddle, lamb in the Irish stew, and, obviously, beef in the beef and stout. They were all pretty good and each one was unique in flavor. They're more soup-like. I don't particularly like beef and stout stews, as I find the stout too overpowering, but that's not their fault. The homemade breads were soft and sweet. The bread in Ireland is so freaking good. Cons: the restaurant is run down, but not in a charming way, and they don't have Guinness on their menu. We're definitely coming back. I really want to try the chicken, bacon, and leek boxty and take our friends here for a traditional Irish meal. read more

The boxty house gets a solid 3 stars from us. It's centrally located and has quick friendly service which is a plus. It's very cute and quant inside and perfect for grabbing brunch or lunch in small groups of 2-4 people. We were a bit disappointed by the food. We got the Irish breakfast and it was very mediocre for an Irish breakfast in Dublin. Everything was a but flavorless however the eggs were cooked perfectly. First day of my Irish adventure and I had to try a boxty because the Yelp photos looked so good! It was a rainy, windy day so the restaurant was fairly empty. I decided to sit at the bar since I was solo. The bartender and server were the nicest. I decided to try their signature dish, the Gaelic Boxty. It was nice. The beef was tender. The pancake was yummy and really enjoyed the sauce. So glad I was able to try this authentic Irish dish. Wonderful dining experience all around. The service was also amazing from beginning to end. We enjoyed it so much, we came back a few days later. I ordered the Gaelic Boxty and my husband ordered The Stew Platter. This is where things went a bit south. The server (not our waitress), places down my order and then places down an order of Beef & Stout Stew for my husband. I politely mention to the lady that he ordered the Stew Platter, which comes with two different stews plus a coddle. She gets really annoyed with me and says that there is no such thing as a Stew Platter, they have no platters of any sort on the menu, and insists he ordered the Beef & Stout Stew. Confused, I asked if she could bring the menu again because maybe we were mistaken. But sure enough, there was a Stew Platter on the menu. I show her that this is what he ordered and she again just seemed really annoyed. Not that any of this was our fault, but we apologized for causing any trouble and my husband said he would just stick with the Beef & Stout Stew. We were over it and just wanted a pleasant dining experience. She proceeded to take his plate anyway and came back with the correct order. With all that said, our waitress was incredibly kind and perfectly attentive without being overbearing. Our food was great. We then ordered the Sticky Toffee Pudding and Bread & Butter Pudding for dessert, which was also delightful. So a Boxty is a traditional Irish potato pancake and at the Boxty house the Boxty is wrapped around a delicious filling of your choice. We went with the Gaelic Boxty which was filled with delicious Irish Beef, Irish Whiskey and a black pepper and mushroom cream sauce. It was as amazing as it sounds and I'm getting hungry just thinking about it! We also ordered the Corned Beef & dumplings and this was also amazing. With savory corned beef and soft dumplings in a creamy sauce how can you go wrong? Overall, this was an awesome place to dine if you are in the Temple Bar area. This place was well worth the visit. We were able to get the gluten-free fish and chips, and the quality of the fish and everything was simply delicious. Every element was superb. They didn't have tartar sauce but they made up for it with the lemon mayonnaise that complemented the fish perfectly. Also the seafood chowder was a little different from what I had in Limerick but it was definitely delicious. We had a large party, so we were tucked away downstairs in a separate dining area - feast choice for our rowdy bunch! ;). First things first, absolutely order a drink! If you're into beer and looking for Guinness, they actually make their own and it's delicious. They also make a great Manhattan and have a great selection of red / white wine. If cheese is your thing-order the cheese plate to start, you will not regret it! For my meal - I ordered the smoked haddock Boxty and seriously, the best thing I've tasted in a very long time! the boxy was fluffy, the fish was flavorful and the sauce was SPOT ON. I'm back in the States trying to figure out how to replicate that dish. Outside of the food, we had exceptional service! Easily, the best dining experience in Ireland, and if I could pick a single restaurant that is a must visit for Ireland, it would be The Boxty House. We did a tour of Ireland by renting a car, and heading to all the can't miss restaurants and pubs based on blogs and reviews. Most of it was, I would classify, as meeting expectations, but The Boxty House was the only one to exceed them. The staff was fabulous, the space very intimate, the menu had so many specialties that no other place we went to had. In fact, it had the broadest selection of traditional Irish food from any place that we've been. The presentation was beautiful, the flavors and textures superb, the prices reasonable. This was the only dinner we had, where we decided to come back for dinner the following day. So disappointed with the boxty dishes here. I mean, if the dish is your namesake you should be an expert at making it! But I digress. We actually started off on a high with the sampler platter. The boxty that was marinated in Thai sweet chili sauce was delicious and refreshing. The boxty fries were great as well, with the boxty flour giving the exterior a more chewy texture. Our party of 4 ordered 3 different types of boxty to try. When in Rome ya know? My seafood boxy was soooo bland, I had to season it with salt myself. Even with sprinkles of salt it was already too late to save the dish. The "seafood" was just fish, which was also very bland in flavor. The Gaelic boxty was also under seasoned, but not as bland as the seafood one. The "gravy" sauce was interesting. The only dish that had any seasonings was the lamb boxty, although it was a little too oily. What a disappointed meal as we were so hyped after trying the boxty dumplings from another restaurant in Belfast the night before. Tourist Trap! We were really looking forward to eating here because of reviews that said it was a must try but we were disappointed. Not worth the time nor prices. The food was blah... not much taste. The Ribeye had no flavor we had to put salt to add flavor and the chicken and smoked bacon was ok. The worst part was the service. The place is in a super tourist area so I get it you have to wait, which it was not that long. We sat at the bar as that was the first available our waiter Iseult had an attitude problem. We asked her for her advice from 2 dishes we saw on menu instead of answering she actually starts by saying all the things she didn't have available that were sold out. If she would have simply answered, so I asked again ok no problem so what about from the 2 dishes she didnt really give us a straight answer it was simply as she can care less.
