The Boxty House is right near Trinity College, in the middle of Dublin's Temple Bar. The outside is cute and once in you will be very happy. Now, it can get so very crowded so I would call ahead if I were you. We did not, but we were able to eat at the bar right away. We were very happy there. The locals are always so kind to tourists and the service is, well Irish, just great. The inside has lovely wooden tables and some have bench seating. I bet that is fun. While we were there we were greeted right away and ordered some drinks and food. The food is spectacular. I mean it is just perfect. I had corned beef and dumplings and I was in heaven. I don't care for brown bread much, but this was yummy and mixed so well with the broth in my corned beef. The chicken and bacon box was so rich and so great, I am glad I was able to steal some bites from my husband. The seafood chowder is in a cream sauce and packed with seafood. It is so so good. Their bar had every drink you could want and the bartender is sweet as can be. The place is spotless, including the bathroom, which I find important. Besides the amazing food and drink, the best thing about The Boxty is their wonderful staff. They make you feel at home. They make you feel welcome. The real deal. "Boxty" is a traditional crepe-like Irish pancake whose dough is made mostly of potato. Our great server, Zoltán, recommended we try the both the traditional chicken and "gaelic" beef boxtys. The meat is served inside the pancake with a delicious mushroom gravy. This terrific restaurant stands apart from the many touristy spots in Temple Bar. Boxties are thin Irish potato pancakes. The Boxty House serves them with heaping servings of either Irish Chicken (with Bacon Lardons in a White Wine Cream Sauce) or Prime Irish Beef Fillet (in a Teeling Whiskey Pepper Cream Sauce). My wife and I ordered one of each, and we loved the dish. The restaurant offers a vegetarian option--a Vegetarian Chilli Mix with Boxty Pancake. The menu also includes other selections including a burger, Traditional Irish Breakfast, dumplings and corned beef. The place has a lively feel to it, but the volume was excellent. I tried the Gaelic Boxty. It came with a pretty good salad but I don't really like boxty. It is way chewy and herbal, almost like naan and pita, except it's potato-based. I guess I was expecting a latke. Anyway, that is not to say it is bad. I ate half of it. It was a lot of food. My server David was very nice, nicest one I met in Ireland. He is not chatty per se but will talk to you if you say something first. This place is packed and busy af. There are always people waiting by the entrance inside. The restaurant won awards for being authentic. They also have a drink selection, of course. The people watching is superb esp on Sat. night. It is like Bourbon St in New Orleans except no beads. One thing that surprised me was there was a gratuity line on the check. I don't recall having to deal with tip so then I was struggling to figure out what is normal. Ugh. I had a perfectly pleasant meal at Boxty House during my recent visit to Dublin. My hotel was a short walk from Temple Bar, so when I arrived in Dublin hungry and tired, I set out to find a restaurant in the area and found the Boxty House on Yelp. I ordered the Dublin Coddle (sausage, bacon, and potato stew) and thought it was comforting and delicious (and reminded me of chicken stew). The bacon was not like American bacon, tit was more like a ham. The stew warmed me up on a windy, rainy day, and helped me understand why the Irish eat so many stews! Others in my group had the salmon, steak boxty, and Guinness and beef stew. They recommended the salmon and steak boxty, but my dad was surprisingly a little underwhelmed by the Guinness stew. Of note, the steak boxty is covered in cream sauce -if you have an aversion to dairy, don't get this! The Boxty House also has an early bird menu that includes 2 courses for about 20 euro (goes until 6:30pm I think?). Considering most of the entrees are 15 euro+, its a good deal if you want a salad or starter. They have a good selection of beer and a nice whiskey cocktail list too. The reviews and pictures made this little place a must try on our holiday. We had a quick dinner this evening and were pretty pleased. I had previously requested a reservation and didn't hear back but as we got in early we decided to stop anyhow. Our server was very nice and and she quickly handled about 8 tables solo. We got in before 6 so we had a little sampling menu. The leak and potato soup was tasty but very hot. We both tried the Chicken Boxty for our entree and really enjoyed it. A very slight change to the normal meat and potatoes Irish meal. I love the dumplings and the various stews to try. There were four of us and we all got something different to try together. The servings were a little small, so I recommend ordering one more dish than your number of peeps. We drank more than we ate so it worked out. The Guiness dark gold pint with a creamy burnt malty taste definitely pairs well with the starchy and meaty dishes. Service was grand, as our server was genuinely attentive and fast. They had the stews to choose from and because I couldn't decide to save my life I went with the sampler. It came with three types of bread, I liked two of the three. This place is definitely a place to check out with their unique menu items due to their "boxty" items. This place was also very busy around 1730(530pm) we had a 15min wait before we could be seated when they opened up their downstairs. It was a very cozy place place with good music playing but little tight on space, but wasn't a big deal for us. Some of the staff was friendly however our waiter wasn't the best. He seemed as if we annoyed him and didn't check to see if we needed refills when we ran low on water. Now the food was fabulous! We tried their boxty fries in the starters section, which was the perfect amount! Then for our meals we got the Smoked ham hock dumplings meal and the Chicken boxty meal. Both meals were great however, I would say the ham hock meal was a MUST try!! It was full of flavor and it's got like a sweet and salty flavor! It is something different and worth getting! What is a Boxty? My thoughts exactly when I sat down at this restaurant and ready Boxty this and Boxty that on the menu. Well luckily nearby there was a box of Boxty (no pun intended) mix explaining exactly what it was. It's potato pancake mixed with flour that gives it a hybrid bread/potato texture and taste. It's more like bread to me, but gets less soggy like a potato when it's drenched in sauce. I started with the cheese board with local Irish cheeses, an assortment of port, blue and another yellow cheese. Served with walnuts, three types of bread, honey and chutney. Washed down with a local Irish autumn beer of course. This was delicious and plenty for two to share. In fact I wish someone was there to share it with me because I finished all of the cheese and was full before my Boxty arrived. I had the garlic steak Boxty. It's basically like an omelet wrapped in a bread/potato sheet, instead of egg. It was good, steak was tender and slightly peppery. It had a white mushroom sauce and was served with a small salad. I think the waiter at this place saved my life. I was severely jet lagged, the weather was terrible. I wandered in and a hot whisky was suggested. I accepted. It was so good. Just absolutely perfect. My initial rating was 2-3 stars bc our waitress was horrid! We've never been here and honestly not huge beer drinkers. I asked for something not sweet and she suggested the pale ale and it was like drinking apple juice. We asked to switch out and honestly we either would have paid for the beers (ordered more drinks) or tipped but she was so nasty obviously we didn't. She complained about us to other patrons and then wouldn't come back to us and switched servers.
