As the Boxty House is in the Temple bar area, it's going to be pretty heavy with the tourist trade. But I dont see that as being a significant problem because the food meets up with the high reviews. So what's a boxty? It's a potato pancake that's very similar to a crepe. Just thicker. And made with mashed/grated potato instead of flour. Easy enough, eh? I opted for the steak medallion boxty and what arrived not much later was a tasty crepe (uh, boxty) wrapped around several delicious pieces of steak (cooked medium rare to order) topped with a white gravy and with a small salad on the side. It was delicious. I sat at the bar, which gave me a great opportunity to see the comings and goings in the restaurant. Do the same if you can. read more

I was mostly pleased by this spot. On a Monday night when seemingly every good restaurant in Dublin was closed, I ended up here on a whim. I ordered the lamb shank and a straight whiskey. The whiskey came first and though it was apparently a hip brand, I didn't like it at all. I'm more of a bourbon guy, so maybe not the restaurant's fault. The lamb shank was the highlight. It was tender and fell right off the bone. I had some negative stereotypes of Irish food, and this restaurant helped correct them. read more

First time eating a boxty and was not disappointed. I ordered the Gaelic Boxty as a starter and the corned beef with boxty dumplings. Cute little place in the Temple Bar area. Seated immediately - which is surprising to me since I'm from the US and always have to wait. Our server, David, was a joy. He was entertaining our table and making us laugh the entire time. The Boxty is such a unique traditional dish you won't find at the various pubs boasting traditional Irish food, and it is prepared to perfection. What is a Boxty you ask? Oh, just a delicious potato pancake stuffed with meat, veggies and other deliciousness. It's basically like savory crepe, except the pancake is made out of potato. Because of Boxty House's great reviews and proximity to my hotel, I was definitely tempted to try during my stay in Dublin. This meal was extremely satisfying, and I wouldn't hesitate to come back again during a future trip. The menu has plenty of traditional Irish fare, but I knew that a boxty was the only way to go. I ordered a chicken and bacon boxty, and my boyfriend went with the traditional Irish boxty which had beef and mushrooms. Mine was absolutely incredible, came stuffed to the brim and topped with a rich and creamy sauce. Only complaint was that the side salad was also covered in the sauce, so maybe next time I'd ask for my salad on a separate plate. We each ordered one boxty with no appetizers, and that was enough to satisfy our appetites without leaving us totally stuffed. I will say the boxtys are a bit pricey - around 17/20 euro, but they do come filled with a generous portion of meat. If you are looking to go out after dinner, Boxty House is smack dab in the middle of the Temple Bar area and is surrounded by nightlife. Coat your stomach with a boxty and then hit the town for a night of drinking and dancing! Definitely no better way to spend a night out in this area! read more

My partner and I both ate only one thing in common all day - we shared 6 oysters at dinner. We both got food poisoning the next morning! If anyone else had this experience last week of February 2019, please join in this review. Something that vile doesn't come out of a kitchen with just one serving. And of course I can't be 100% certain it was the oysters, but both of us had different entries for lunch and dinner. I was unable to make my prepaid "Game of Thrones " and Belfast tours for the next 2 days! Nasty thing food poisoning. Especially over a £6 appetizer. I am familiar with a Boxty, big of Irish dissent. What they serve at the Boxty house is the road take a Boxty. I ordered the Boxty sampler and the halloumi appetizer. The sampler came with potato dumplings, miniatures, crispy fries, and a Boxty covered with cheese and tomato. The halloumi appetizer came with some sliced vegetables, but also with a hummus that definitely had pesto in it. Those two items were filling enough. Waiter was not bad, but not very welcoming/pleasant. He wasn't negative, but quick to get our order and get us out. He never acknowledge any thanks I gave him, and never smiled. Additionally, I kept overhearing multiple waiters talk about how they were incorrectly charging customers, and also heard that they had to fully refund someone. The table I sat at was not wobbly, but was very slanted. The floor was creaky and bouncy. Every time someone walked behind me, I felt my seat sink into the floor while I was eating. I ordered the boxty platter and stew platter. The boxty platter was good. Not many complaints with this dish. The stew platter wasn't bad either, however I was not very fond of the pork stew. It was very salty, and the sausage reminded me of microwavable sausage. The bread was also very tough and the mashed potatoes was very bland. I then ordered an Irish coffee, which was just a big cup of coffee. I couldn't even tell if I was paying for whiskey in my coffee and there was not cream/foam on top either. I was just given a regular cup of coffee. The bill came to €80 (i didn't mention the 2 beers and cup of tea) and I gave a €100 bill. The waiter asked "Change?" and I replied "Yes please!" The waiter replied "Thanks have a good one." I look behind me and the waiter put the money in the cash register, closed the register and then continued to complain to another waiter. I waited to get his attention to ask for my change back, but after a bit, it got to a point where it was too awkward to ask for my change back. So instead I decided to write this review. What was there not to like? The restaurant is much larger than it looks from the outside with seating downstairs. We were seated promptly around 6:00 p.m. Our waiter was attentive, engaging and accurate with his recommendations. Our kids enjoyed their chicken goujons with fries. Okay, that is pretty basic. However, my wife loved her pastrami sandwich and I wolfed down my Irish stew. The dessert we had was truly one of the best desserts we have eaten as a family. It was gone in less than 60 seconds. It was a some kind of caramel bread pudding with ice cream. All of the food is locally sourced. Whenever we will next be back in Dublin, we will definitely return. A starter and main course for under 20 euro. As a starter, i had the tomato and mozzarella salad, which was delicious. As a main, I had the corned beef and cabbage with potato dumplings. On a whirlwind 2 week vacation to Ireland, the girlfriend & I tried to see & experience absolutely as much of this incredible land as we could. We did not accomplish every last activity we wished we could have on our rather ambitious itinerary. Nonetheless, we did discover a land of numerous stunning & magical wonders. We did see a land of unending natural beauty. We did learn of a land with a monumentally long history of trials, tragedies & triumphs. We did get to meet many kind, humorous, warm & generous people. Our vacation to Ireland was just 2 weeks, but that was time enough to know this is a land easy to love & a land to be sorely missed. Feeling the jetlag of departing California in the morning & arriving in Ireland the next morning, the girlfriend & I were more hungry than sleepy just after landing & checking into our hotel. It was time to kill 2 birds with 1 stone: check out Temple Bar & get something to eat. Before our trip, a friend had mentioned boxty & recommended we try it in Ireland. Per wikipedia: "boxty (bacstaí or arán bocht tí in Irish meaning "poor house bread") is a traditional Irish potato pancake." Lo & behold, we strolled over to Temple Bar & immediately came across Gallagher's Boxty House. Like a lot of Temple Bar, this place has a charming & cozy feel. Service was friendly, conversational, & very welcoming to us obviously American tourists. Looking over our menus, we were eager to order our 1st pints of heavenly brew in Ireland. We had heard the legend that Guinness is better in Ireland than anywhere else & were looking forward to trying it out. What's this? No Guinness on tap? It's true. Testing the legend would have to wait. We both ordered pints of Murphy's stout, which tasted pretty much like the last Murphy's stout I had in the States. For food, the girlfriend ordered the Gaelic Boxty (potato pancake with fillet steak medallions in a mushroom, whiskey & black peppercorn sauce) & I ordered the Corned Beef & Cabbage Boxty (potato pancake with Irish corned beef and sautéed cabbage in a rich parsley sauce). Our orders didn't take long. Though described as a potato pancake, the boxty seemed more like a potato crepe to me. After taking a few bites of my own, I tried some of the girlfriend's boxty too. Both were positively delicious. The mushroom, whiskey & black peppercorn sauce perfectly complemented the steak & the rich parsley sauce was indeed creamy, rich & flavorful. Being in Temple Bar, food at Gallagher's Boxty House can be pricey. There are specials, but if you're looking for a boxty dish plan on spending around €20. Even so, for delicious food & tasty boxty with friendly service in Temple Bar, Gallagher's Boxty House is a good way to go. read more

American family of four (w/HS girls) on vacation, looking for lunch after a tour of Trinity College. Short walk to Temple Bar neighborhood. Boxty was top rated here on yelp and simple to find. Not heavy on locals, at least for Friday lunch. The waiter we had was the kind of thing you hope for in Ireland.. He was purpose built for the role and chatted at every table in snatches without making the service feel slow. Local thoughts, questions and opinions on our trip to date and what we were doing next. Where we were from and his experiences in the US. Seafood chowder appetizer was not the thickened version that Americans are used to, but the three who had it agreed it was very good. Heavy on salmon. Three breads brought to the table - soda / beer/ Guinness were good - high marks from the adults on the Guinness bread - which also came with the chowder. The comments on the fries are spot on. Add them as a side! One order covered four of us. A boxty is a thin potato pancake. I had the chicken version of the dish that uses it as a base with very good white sauce and enjoyed it and got to feel like I had some local flavor. How many ways can you cook a potato? It turns out, potatoes are quite multi-purpose. What a delicious treat! I believe this to be a "foodie" version of traditional Irish faire, thus it comes with a hefty price tag. However the flavor of the food more than makes it worth it. We tried 3 different types of boxty: the chicken and bacon, corned beef, and Gaelic. I am a huge fan of corned beef, so that is the one I had and it just nailed it. The soft chunks of beef matched with the creamy parlsey sauce (honestly, it doesn't sound that good but it is) was just perfect. The steak in the Gaelic boxty was to die for- cooked perfectly and tender and the mushroom sauce was just perfect. Finally you know you can never go wrong with chicken and bacon. So if you're searching reviews trying to decide which to try... sorry but I'm of no help here! Sample them all! The drinks were also innovative and delicious, with local (and newcomer) Teeling whiskey featured in their cocktails. Not only do they serve fun craft cocktails, but they also have a selection of local beers. Oh, and the service was great. I was a ding dong and accidentally made the reservation for the wrong day, but they still honored it! Our server was exceedingly helpful and nice. I heard about this place on a travel/food show where they came to Dublin. Thought I would give it a go. Had some clients come in from overseas and we thought, why not try a modern spin on Irish food? The staff were absolutely lovely and very funny. Out waitress convinced us to try the Boxty Fries even though no one had even considered it. Definitely a favourite for the table once it arrived! I see someone else said their stew was "flavourless;" not my experience at all. Really good food, really chill/fun vibe. Work appropriate or good for a meetup. Bonus: I was supposed to keep the receipt and submit it for corpo expenses... but I lost it. I called them up two weeks later and begged them to reprint the receipt. Stan (who I presume is the manager) sorted through 500 receipts in his system to find the right one for me, and got it to me within a couple of hours.
