Unique menu which is only written on the chalkboard behind the bar. We stopped on a weekday for lunch before heading on for more traveling. We sat at the bar and the bartender took our order. We had the schnitzel sandwich and bacon mac. Heard the bacon in the mac was really sweet so it had a different flavor than what you might be used to. Portion with the sandwich was pretty big - lots of greens and pickled onions on top of the pork schnitzel. Little sad it wasn't breaded and fried but still good. The chips had good seasoning on them. Saw the wedge salad and that was equally impressive. I'd be interested to stop by next time I'm in town to see what they'd have on the menu again. read more

Things are quiet here during the off season, especially on a Sunday night. Thankfully we found this tavern open and serving food. The quality and quantity was amazing. Our bartender M. was very nice and suggested the Cobb salad for my wife. I went with the cold cut grinder sub sandwich. Both were excellent. No fryer so chips were offered . This is a fun, eclectic, little place with amazing food. The only menu is posted on a chalkboard behind the bar and you place your order with the bartender. You won't find standard bar food options here- there is no deep fryer; so don't come looking for fried anything. Select your sandwich (there is something for everyone) and your side (the side options are plentiful) and begin the countdown... My guy had the Pork Loin Sandwich w/a side of Mac&Cheese. Both were fantastic. The pork was seasoned perfectly and had a wonderful sear on it just to the point of caramelization. The flavor could not be beat. The Mac&Cheese was comforting and decadent. I had the cheeseburger w/a side of Brussel Sprouts. The burger, like the pork, was seasoned and cooked perfectly. The sprouts were an ideal pairing. The only thing I wished they had was an option to drizzle a little balsamic reduction- it would have sent it over the top but trust me, they were really good just as prepared. Peggy was working the bar and never stopped moving. If she wasn't with a customer or running food, she was actively cleaning and never slacking off. The patrons and service were her priorities not her friends or her phone. We loved her, the vibe, the decor, and the food- everything about this joint is a good. We'll be back. read more

SERVICE Upon arriving the staff greeted me and I let them know I had called in an order. The lady behind the bar checked in the back and then let me know that I was "Next Up". I called ahead and was told it would take 25 minutes. I showed up 30 minutes after I called. I then waited another 20 minutes by the bar before my food was ready. I don't think they had even started on my order and I wish she would have just told me the truth and let me know how long it would likely take instead of leaving me thinking it'll be out any minute now. MEAL I did my research and went with what most people said was delicious... the pork sandwich and cornbread. Neither was anything to write home about. The pork sandwhich was dry burnt and all I could taste was the char on the outside of the meat. (That said, the tomatoes, onion, and lettuce that went on the sandwich seemed fresh and was crisp.) The cornbread was just okay. Nothing special at all. AMBIANCE This is a bar so don't show up thinking you and your family will enjoy a nice meal at a corner booth. And judging from what I saw cleanliness probably isn't much of a priority. I'd be scared to take a peek back in that kitchen. TIME I called ahead and was told it would be ready in 25 minutes. I arrived and waited at least another 20 minutes. I don't think they had even started on my order. RECOMMENDATION I was so incredibly disappointed by my experience. I was looking forward to eating here all day and my experience came up waaaaay short of the reviews I read. Maybe they just had an off night? What an interesting little place. The décor is wacky in the best way and the bartenders efficient and funny. No menu you have to order off of the black board behind the bar. I ordered the Teriyaki Chicken and patiently waited a really long time. The toppings and flavor of the sandwich were really good. The sad part is my chicken was so over cooked it was dry and tough. My husband commented that the idea of his sandwich was good and the flavors excellent but his sandwich was also really dry and needed more sauce. This place is mysteriously confusing. Eclectic for sure. From the swings to the over abundance of different decor, I don't know where to look. All jokes aside, the food is amazing! I had the crab cake sandwich and cornbread and it was so yummy! My husband had a cheeseburger and the cornbread and he enjoyed it! My mother in law ordered the wings, BBQ, and they were oh, so yummy! Very, very close to REAL Buffalo wings and it's not often that as a Buffalo native, I can say that! They don't have a deep fryer (so no French Fries) and everything is made fresh. Everyone seems to know each other but that didn't stop me from getting fast and friendly service. The Bulleit old fashion was made well. The menu is written on a chalkboard behind the bar and featured some great looking flavor combinations. I opted for the Buffalo Cauliflower, Wings and Cornbread. The cornbread was as good as advertised. Moist and just a bit sweet. The other food items are all grilled and tasty. The wings were meaty and the dozen I ordered were too much for one person. The side of cauliflower was done just right (a slight bit of crunch) and the uniqueness of the buffalo sauce made it exceptional. Definitely recommend if you are in the area. read more

We stumbled upon a quaint little bar for a midday meal during a friends wedding getaway. The ambience was just what we were looking for - a warm and inviting pub. The staff compromised only of a bartender and a chef in the kitchen, but they handled the influx of tourists with ease. The drinks were top notch with a great selection of beer, ciders and seltzers on tap. I started with a fantastic, bloody mary that was a meal in itself - garnished with green olives, and a large slice of pickle. The Wisconsin Amber from Capital Brewing was exceptional, and the cornbread was so good that it would make a southern grandma envious. We also tried the fresh and delicious brussels sprouts, catfish -BLT, and chicken salad, which were all top notch. We ended up with more food than we could finish, but everything was at the highest quality. If you're ever in Elkhart Lake, this is the perfect spot for lunch, dinner or an evening of drinks. I've been here before. My Dad lives in Elkhart Lake so I come to visit and check out local places. I've never eaten there before, but tried to last night. I ordered chicken wings. Waited for about 45 minutes for them. When they came they we're burned. I mean really burned. I can't believe they even brought them out of the kitchen and tried to serve them. Ordered a hamburger as a replacement. Ordered medium. Outside burned, inside raw. I hate 1/4 of it because I was so hungry. A True Dive! The unassuming Brown Baer is a must for anyone visiting or passing through Elkhart Lake! Found this place when I was up in Plymouth for business, and I'm so glad I did! The place does not look like much at all from the outside, but the inside is a Diver's paradise! On top of that they have an outstanding beer selection with a wide range of local drafts on tap. The food is out of this world good. I NEVER would have guessed that this unassuming wooden shack could pump out such high quality food! The staff and locals were more than happy to buy us a round, tell us about the town and show us what the town favorites were on the menu...The crab cakes at this place are OUT OF BOUNDS! Holy Cannoli. I wasn't expecting much after seeing on yelp that "all there was here" was a chalkboard of sandwiches and some sides. Man, Brown Baer will teach me to judge a book by its cover. As my sister (Maxine W) said - it is a BAR. There is ONE table. We did not know this and walked in with a party of 7, and the table was occupado. The staff was super helpful and accommodating to us, as we clearly were out of towners. The sandwiches - in one word, are bomb. Maxine's catfish sandwich - shoulda ordered that. I had the crabcake sandwich - which would've been awesome, if there weren't baby shrimp in the "patty." I have an aversion to baby shrimp, they creep.me.the.eff.out. So, if we ever go back to Elkhart Lake, I know for next time. The sides were also very tasty. The corn bread was TO DIE for, and the acorn squash and brussels sprouts were good too. The food is THE BEST. Everything is so fresh and they make it right there in their little kitchen. It's not a sit down restaurant, it's a bar, so don't go expecting anything fancy. If your looking for good food, you can find it here. I crave their veggie burger every time I am away and when I can catch the meatloaf/mac and cheese special it is home cooking like i've never been able to do myself. The bar is also very fun, pool, darts, swings, an empty ant farm, and lots of bear decor. You really just can't go wrong. We enjoyed The Brown Baer so much we visited twice in our short stay at Elkhart Lake. First off, the wings are amazing! They are grilled to perfection, tender and juicy. I had a turkey burger and grill zucchini, both were very good. My teenage boys both had burgers, husband had a chili dog, and everyone loved the corn bread. I even brought a piece of corn bread home for my sister in law who had tried out The Brown Baer just a few week earlier with her family and gave us the recommendation. As earlier reviewers have mentioned, this is mostly a bar with only one or two tables available. As long as you're prepared for that going in, all is well. We sat at the bar. The beer was good and poured well. I had the pork loin sandwich and a side of cornbread, both of which were very good. My husband had a bacon cheeseburger which he thoroughly enjoyed. He chose a side of potato chips which we both assumed would be house made; we should have asked because they were just standard store bought potato chips. He also had a cup of the broccoli cheddar soup that he loved. We would definitely eat here again if we're back in the area. read more
