Wow this place is great. Very elegant, and great food. Went to a wedding last night and had a blast.

Not bad for a wedding venue. I attended as a guest. The atrium was very nice, and works well for a ceremony. The Cocktail house had some pretty impressive food. The lobster rolls were amazing and the shrimp were humongous. I was also impressed with the staff during the cocktail hour. At a lot of venues, the servers come around infrequently, but we had servers coming around constantly with delicious food. The dinner (buffet) was not as good as the cocktail hours' food, but I have come to expect that. I received quick service at the bar, but the drinks were watered down... however that's sort of par for the course. The room that the reception was in was a good size, not entirely my style, but the old world look that a lot of people like at these sort of venues. read more

I was at a fundraiser October 25, and the Brownstone was the beefsteak caterer. SO DISAPOINTED! First, our waitress was incredibly HORRIBLE. Gave us the appetizer tray, said here ya go, and walked away. She didn't even try to put it on the table. She never asked to refill the water, or to bring over a bottle of soda. Plus her appearance was less than desirable. Hair all over the place. AND who does white glove service at a beefsteak? UGH. The beefsteak itself was just ok. The meat was eh. No garlic butter detected, plus the bread, even though I wasnt going to eat it, was stale because it was cut WAY TOO EARLY. And it was stacked one tray on top of another, the bread touching the bottom of the dirty tray above it. My recommendation. ....let Hap Nightengale handle the beefsteaks until someone better comes along. Stick to in house catering Brownstone. read more

My review is a bit different from most of the others I have been reading. To begin, I had my wedding reception at The Brownstone on 12 September 1964. Being born and raised in Paterson about a mile away from the venue, our choice was quite simple. My parents both worked in dye houses, yet we were able to afford a wonderful wedding for 200 guests and received nothing but compliments. A year later we celebrated our daughter's Christening there with a family party. Many more events were held there as the years rolled by. In 1995, we hosted the wedding of one of my daughters to rave reviews. When she became engaged, she announced that she wanted to have her reception at The Brownstone. We never even looked elsewhere before booking it. We were not disappointed! Follow that with my youngest daughter getting married in 1998. She dragged me to many different venues (she didn't want to "duplicate" her sister's reception), but ultimately felt that the Brownstone offered more than all the others. Scott Michel suggested doing a cocktail reception which sounded interesting and "different". I don't have enough adjectives to describe the accolades we got from the guests. Two days after that wedding, my oldest daughter (who had just become engaged) decided she also wanted to have a cocktail reception at The Brownstone the following year. It was another fabulous success. In each case, my worries ended when I arrived at the receptions. Every detail was taken care of and we were always made to feel as if our special event was your highest priority. My advice to you is to keep on doing what you have been doing for my family for over the last fifty years. Take it from a Paterson girl that you know how to treat people and you certainly know how to throw a party. I've come here the last 3 years for a New Years Eve party we put together with about 140 people. Fancy decor, very clean environment including the bathrooms, the bar tenders have always been very nice. The food is top notch everything is absolutely delicious, this review would be pages if i listed all the food I've eaten here but its all great. I went here for a holiday luncheon with about 30 co-workers. The Brownstone put together a nice menu for us. We were in one of the smaller rooms upstairs. This place is massive. It's like a catering factory. We were there on a Thursday afternoon for lunch and there were many parties going on simultaneously. You definitely need to keep the door closed to your room or you will hear the other parties. When we walked into the room, they had a table set up with antipasti (meats, cheeses, peppers, artichoke, etc) and some bread and bread sticks. They probably should have replenished this or brought out a second one because it clearly was not big enough for the size of our group. Pitchers of water and soda were on the tables as well as a bottle of red and a bottle of white wine. The waiters happily replenished the wine when we finished off a bottle. We then sat down and the passed appetizers came out. We started off with a huge plate of fried calamari followed by a dish of baked clams. The calamari was perfect, very enjoyable. That was the last of the shared courses (other than the bread basket on the table). We then received our salad, followed up by Penne Vodka. Both were good. I was pretty stuffed by this point. We had a choice for our entrees of Chicken Marsala, Veal Parmigiana, or I believe Sol Francese. I ordered the Veal Parmigiana and was very pleased with my selection. It tasted great and was a gigantic portion to boot. I ate about 5 bites and then asked the server if I could have a container to wrap up the rest. This dish was two full dinners for me. My husband ordered the Chicken Marsala and loved it as well. Also a big portion. For dessert, we had a choice of cake or mudslide ice cream. I was advised to get the mudslide ice cream. It was very photogenic and tasted great too. I finished my meal with a glass of tea. I felt that the room was a bit dated and showed its' age as did the restrooms. I also think the staff needs to really make sure a room is empty after the previous party. There was a helium filled balloon by one of the chandeliers in our room, which looked like it may have been there for a while. One caveat that I need to mention is that The Brownstone is in Paterson. You need to drive through some pretty rough areas to get here, and even the immediate vicinity wasn't that great. I'm glad I was there in daylight hours. The food was excellent. And I think it was reasonably priced for what we received. Overall, it was an enjoyable dining experience. It seems like weekdays can be popular with Repass meals considering there's a large cemetery just down the road. The service was good and food was pretty good, we had short ribs, penne vodka, eggplant parm, shrimp parm, calamari amongst vegetables and other side dishes. Two things I'd say could be better would be the carpets that cover the dance floor, I almost bit it by tripping over them. The other would be the speaker system, it was hard to make honorary speeches with the room next door being loud on the microphone. read more

I had a shower at the infamous Brownstone on Saturday. I was very excited to finally get to go here as I am a huge RHONJ fan. The location is not the greatest, it is smack dab in the middle of Paterson. It is a gorgeous building surrounded by uhhhhh not as pretty things as itself. The inside was gorgeous and elegant. There were numerous day parties going on that day. It could truly be seen as a "wedding factory," where the push one in event out while they start the next, but you would never know. Except for the fact that in my party we were constantly interrupted by the DJ next store and the attendees woohooing to the electric slide. Finally, the best part... the food. It was delicious and on point. Sometimes catering food (and buffets) are just eh and not impressive. But here I was impressed and ate every single last drop of food on my plate :) read more

One of the worst banquet halls you can possibly go to. Food taste like absolute trash just full of butter and grease. Also employees get treated like slaves there. Talked to the valets outside and it's drop everything for the owners, which is not right. Sometimes don't even make minimum wage inside and outside. Tommy is a very nice guy and will help you out but Al on the other hand, is a stuck up cocky guy. I was recommend this place to nobody. read more

I had my baby shower at the Brownstone and I couldn't be more disappointed with everything. -Originally I called to hear the minimum of a party, front reception told me 25, then on my final meeting the manager, tells me it's 40. (Umm, way to tell us the minimum 5 days before our event?!) -Call the reception as I'm finalizing the seating chart and she tells me that a table holds 10-12 guests, then 5 days before the event during my final meeting the manager tells me I had to request that long before. WHY DIDN't HE TELL us this ahead of time then during our 1st meeting. -My boyfriend and I asked about the menu options so that we know what to expect and bring for our 2nd meeting when we finalize things and the manager replies to the inquiries with, "we'll talk about that when the dates get closer". We get there and he tell us to pick out 7 plates, I'm taking my time and he's scrolling on his phone instead of mentioning their top dishes, giving us his expert advice (literally so unprofessional) -THE DAY OF MY EVENT I see wines all over the tables after my mom had finalized beers for the menu. Literally took 30 minutes for people to start drinking and I didn't even get an apology from the manger (perhaps he wasn't paying attention to our request because he was on his phone. -The head waiter kept making snarky comments, my guests were literally telling me how unprofessional he was being. If you want a venue that goes the extra mile and makes you feel special, lets you know all of your options ahead of time and really takes the time to make your unique day special PLEASE GO SOMEWHERE ELSE. FOHA event is great won alot of prizes. OK so i had some of the food it was good as all ways i have been here a few times and never disappointed pasta was good vegetables crisp and the eggplant was Good the way I'm very picky on the way its cooked grandmas was the only one i ate.Any way i think the event went rather well the tricky tray was huge and we walked away with a little more than we can carry. read more

I attended a party there on Dec 17th, 2014. Food is fantastic and plentiful. You will not go home hungry! Good for loud parties, since there's usually several going on all the time and you can hear noise from surrounding rooms. As for the staff....waiters and servers were good, hustled and checked on our table. Valet guys were good too. Only waited about a minute for my car. As for the bartender and the punk asses working the serving stations, they weren't the sharpest. All I saw the bartender do was count the money in the register every 2 minutes. The one guy at the station serving sliders was cooking them so slow there was a line of 5 people at all times. Hello....can you keep up?! He had zero personality too. I asked another punk standing around talking to the bartender for a pitcher of water for our table, he said to ask the waiter who was already over loaded serving food. I have certainly made numerous visits to the Brownstone to know that it's a great venue to hold any event. If you don't believe me then stop by any weekend and see the amount of parties taking place all at the same time. Regardless of the volume of business that they do, it never seems to be too crowded. The party rooms are quite beautiful with a nice airy feel to it which makes guest feel comfortable and the party livelier. The only problem is that with multiple parties going on at the same time there's always the chance that other guests from adjacent parties often and do crash another party but hey that's all part of the charm. Anyways, I've practically been to an event in every room that The Brownstone has to offer. From business meetings, to award ceremonies, to retirement dinners, wedding parties, and of course the quintessential Christmas party I've never walked out disappointed. The food served is delicious and always hits the spot especially their fried calamari and eggplant rollatini. Service is always delivered with a smile and the wait staff is ever present but never intrusive. The décor is elegant--think Victorian charm with a dash of Florencian chic. I would no problem hosting a party here. Great food, great service, and beautiful space make this a great option for any event. read more

Do not book an event and put down a deposit thinking they will work with you if things with coronavirus get worse. They had a very nice message from the owner Albert on the website during the stay at home order for New Jersey saying they would work with customers and even refund deposits. I booked a large bridal shower event for September 2020. When I called and said the event needed to be canceled due to out of state guests and elderly guests who could not attend, I was told I would not receive my deposit back. The owner was rude and demeaning claiming he had inside connections with the Governor of New Jersey. As if that makes any difference to the safety of the at risk guests or the out of state guests. I have tried to have the $500 deposit placed in the bride's name since she is local (I live out of state) but was told the bride had to book an event first. Terrible customer service. It's taken weeks to get answers about the deposit despite calling and emailing the owner and accounting department. I would not recommend giving them any of your money. read more

I've been to the Brownstone MANY times for MANY events. I've been affiliated with local fire departments and police departments for 13 years. Prior to tonight I would have given this establishment 5 stars, specifically because they take care of the departments so well. HOWEVER. We came here for a BEEFSTEAK for the local PBA and came to find out after many appetizers were brought out that the Brownstone RAN OUT OF BEEF before our entrees came out. They ran out of beef?! For a beefsteak that was booked months in advance?! So beyond unacceptable. A highly regarded establishment with the unfortunate location in Paterson. Don't waste your time. This type of mistake is completely inexcusable. I would NEVER book an event with this establishment. Horrible. read more

I had a reservation for 5 for Easter brunch. I called the prior Thursday afternoon stating that I needed to change the reservation to 4 as one member was in the hospital and I was told that my credit card would be credited even though I had already been charged for 5. I mentioned it again on Easter to the person seating us and she said she will mark it that there was a credit due. I called on Wednesday following Easter inquiring about my refund and the woman answering the phone (the same one that I spoke with to cancel on Thursday) told me that she put the information through to the office and it was up to the owners if they wanted to issue a credit or not. I inquired why I was charged 3 days before the dinner and she said that was so if there were any cancellations that they had a waiting list of people to be called to fill in the vacancies. There were 3 days' notice to rebook that spot which I am sure was, ensuing getting paid twice for the same spot as there were no open seats. I have inquired 4 times and cannot get anyone to give me a call back. This issue on top of being crammed in like sardines and waiting in long lines for food will keep me from ever returning to this place again. Very dissatisfied with the entire experience. Horrendous. Just attended their easter buffet. Dont know if the food is good bc I never got any... 5-6 people deep at each station and no plates. People were putting steaks in coffee cups just to get some food. There were so few waitstaff to bring them out and it took 15 min to try and get thru the crowd. I left there starving and asked the arrogant owner for a refund. He had the gall to follow me up the stairs and argue with me that plenty of people were able to get food, what was MY problem. Um how about there WERE NO PLATES you pompous jerk! They packed the room with twice the amount of tables it could hold. There were 47 tables at 20 people per table... that's over 800 in a room that could hold no more than 350. people were packed in so bad and there were only two skinny isles for all 800 people to get in and out with food. Nightmare on Easter Sunday best decribes my experience while attending a family dinner at the cattle ranch known as the Brownstone! The amount of people packed into a room that (on their Website) holds 400 people was disturbing! The fire department should have been alerted but we were so anxious to get out there before an emergency arose that we just didn't bother and will certainly never go back. THe owner should be ashamed of himself for ruining dinner for all. The food, atmosphere, staff and the experience in its entirety was outstanding. The process from start to finish can only be described as flawless. We did not have to worry about one aspect of the event from our first meeting with Albert to the last minute of the night. Albert and his staff are truly experts in hosting a good time. My husband and I began talking about the next big event we could host at the Brownstone the night of the wedding. Mina was especially sweet and attentive to us the night of the event. OK I feel a little bad writing this review cause they do allot of charity work with my place of employment......but I cant hold off my review anymore! I have been to this "famous" place several times now and every visit is slightly less impressive than the last!---First visit I was personally escorted out by the now famous Mr.Manzo himself due to no fault of my own(i cant go into detail but i will say he was not nice nor was he understanding of the special circumstances of our event!)Then i was there for a brunch were the food was ....hmmm....lets say I left very hungry!Then i was there for a few more dinner events ---not great--not bad--one was awful--they overbooked and our cocktail hour turned into 2hrs of nearly 100 people smushed into a little room. Then this past event---the wait staff was great---no complaints--very accommodating and friendly---the pitchers of soda and water(for the first time) came promptly and were adequate for the table of 12. The bread basket was great and had some good choices, the salad that followed was gross! It tasted as if the lettuce was soaked in horrible vinegar for days---it was uneatable! The pasta was slightly better----but cold! We were starving and so happy when our main course came----but one bite into it we knew we'd be leaving hungry! The salmon dish was unlike any other salmon I ever tasted---it was slimy on the outside but super dry inside---someone else ordered te fillet mingoune that literally looked like it was cut then thrown on the plate 100% uncooked! Someone at the table got a vegetarian dish that had 6 green-beans, a chunk of spinach, a grilled onion(that was very good), and a mini potatoe(that wasnt fully cooked)---I dont know how that plate would be able to classify as a maincourse---it wasnt enough food to feed a small child!----The dessert was served and it was good---not great---then coffee---it wasnt drinkable at all---i never had coffee taste like that---all i know is that the next 2 days I was up using the bathroom every 1/2 hr! This place gets rave reviews and I cant understand why! The only redeeming quality about this establishment was the wait staff--they were very professional and should be commended for doing a good job!(I know that waiting big events can be stressful , they did a good job! I know they dont cook the food so cant complain to them about it)One more complaint was the valet service----these boys couldnt have been any less friendly and you knew they wanted to be anywhere else but there! Also the coatcheck lady needed an attitude adjustment and some extra hands! When we were asked to give a hand to the Manzos during our event I had to laugh---the only people that deserved a round of applause that night were us---the guests that had to suffer through the food and bathroom nightmares that followed-----and the wait staff--they got some golf claps from our table! I USED to love this place... but that was several years ago and before they hit television and "fame". Yes, the food is delicious and will meet your expectations and your budget. There is no doubt about that. They have the best overall packages in the area (Trust me, I was the family event planner for a couple years running) with above average buffet style food and pretty decent wine (in comparison to other local venues) included in the packages. The downfall and a major one, is the service. I had my sister's bridal shower here on a saturday afternoon. The room across from us was so loud we could not hear anything that was happening in our own. I understand that other events have to go on at the same time but the workers kept our door open and refused to close it for our party because they had to keep going in and out. Not my problem. its called a door knob. Open and shut. Simple as that. We even had a microphone and no one could hear what we were saying. Instead, I had to stand by the door and keep it shut for at least a half hour while my sister (I was the maid of honor and should have been helping with the gifts) was unwrapping her gifts and speaking to the guests. In addition, throughout most of our event, the entire ceiling was shaking violently, SOOO much that many guests were frightened to stay seated where they were. They literally moved their chairs to either end of the room. I am in no way exaggerating. Also, guests from another party came into our room and used our private bathroom. Sure, go right ahead. I guess I should have stayed the bouncer at the door the entire time to ensure a somewhat decent event and guest only attendance. read more

This place is the pits. To be fair, I should say what some people will think is the most important piece - the food here is INCREDIBLE. The selection of fresh cheeses, the eggplant, the desert buffet... all of it was, as they say, to die for. That being said, the waitstaff is the worst I've experienced... well, maybe ever. I would have believed that someone was playing a trick on me. I was here for a huge family reunion; I can't begin to imagine what someone spent on all of this, so I was surprised that the service was so hilariously bad. After the appetizers, the pasta dishes came out; when I asked our waitress if either of the offered pasta dishes were vegetarian, she responded, "I don't know; I'm not a vegetarian." When I realized she wasn't joking, I responded, "Right, but I figured you might know, since you work here." She said she would ask, but then never returned. At this point, I asked a different waitress if either of the pastas were vegetarian. She said no and offered to give me a pasta with tomato sauce and basil, which sounded great to me. My original waitress then came back to my table with - no joke - a bowl of boiled, plain, unbuttered, un-sauced, just fresh out of the water PLAIN pasta. I asked the waitress, "Would you want to eat pasta like this?" And - it just gets better! - she responded, "I don't eat pasta." At this point, I was glad the service was so bad, because everyone at my table was laughing so hard about how crappy of a waitress she was (not in front of her, of course). I then brought the plain pasta to the manager, who really and truly could not have cared less. Thankfully I was not so hungry after appetizers, or I would have been livid. Add to this the decor, which MIGHT have been awesome 40+ years ago, but is hideous and dated. Also, the paint is peeling from the walls and if they aren't moldy, then they look moldy. Yikes! I hate to say it, but I've been here for 2 weddings and both were pretty run of the mill, ok food, nothing to knock your socks off. My biggest turn off is that it is such a wedding factory over there. We were mingling with strangers in the lobby and outside from about 4 other weddings. As another poster said, the ceiling was shaking from a wedding above us as well. I really don't look forward to the drive over there either. It's in a cr*ppy part of town that I would never choose to drive through. To me, this is not the "Premiere Wedding Venue" in NJ as there are many others that rank way, way above this place. :/ read more

I feel guilty writing a 2 star review because my friend and his wife really enjoyed his wedding, but we were somewhat horrified by some of the things that went on during every part of the event. The good: The food was overall fairly good, although nothing to write home about. Filet mignon at dinner was humongous and properly cooked to order, which is not typical for a large group. They had lots of onions in the roasted potatoes too, which I loved. The building is lovely on the outside, and the 'garden room' provided some great photo opportunities. Some of the servers during cocktail hour were really lovely - I recall one engaged couple who worked there who were particularly charming and engaging with the guests. The outside garden was pretty and probably gave the bride and groom some gorgeous shots. The quite bad: They had difficulty regulating the temperature in the garden room, so people were freezing for at least the first hour. The dance floor was tiny. Bathrooms were clean but were downstairs... not the best set up for a group of drinking people in heels. Valet parking was a mess. We got there on time and had to wait in line about 20 minutes just to get to the valet stand due to the rush of people getting there for multiple weddings. When we pulled up, they asked whether we were coming or going, as they had so many weddings going on they couldn't keep track. A friend of mine actually had to go through the line twice, as she actually got on the "outgoing" line instead of the "incoming" line - easy to do since they weren't marked. There were people cutting in line too from side streets if they knew the area. You're in the heart of lovely Paterson. Fine during the daylight when the 'hood is illuminated, but not so comfortable at night if you're not familiar with the area. We came down the stairs from the ceremony and actually got lost. There was nobody to direct us and people going in all directions to different weddings - as well as multiple brides in the lobby. It took some time to find someone who knew where each wedding was taking place. I suppose that's the true definition of a wedding factory, but they could have been a lot more organized, even with the use of signs. There was nowhere for the wedding party to leave bags other than an unsecure area where everyone walked through to get to the restrooms. They closed the men's restroom during the reception for cleaning. Really. Because they couldn't do that before or after. Men had to go on a scavenger hunt to find a restroom. Dinner was served at 10:45 after a huge gap between courses... just bad planning, way too late. They served dessert outside in around 50 degree weather - I don't know of anyone who even went out there since it was too cold and so late. The really really extraordinarily ugly: The ceremony was in a room upstairs that resembled a small generic hotel conference room. SOMEONE STARTED VACUUMING TWICE RIGHT OUTSIDE THE THIN DOOR DURING THE EXCHANGE OF VOWS. Yes, they had to be instructed two times to stop. We could also hear children playing and people yelling and setting up and partying just outside the door throughout the whole ceremony. Some common sense people! It's their wedding! First I want to say, that I am a FOODIE. My wife is more into the service and beauty stuff. That said, we were both BLOW AWAY by our wedding last Sunday at the Brownstone. Before I booked this place I did my research and read hundreds of the reviews here, as well as the competition. I decided ultimately on the Brownstone for their reputation for excellent food and the incredible indoor/outdoor space of the Grand Conservatory. I did all the planning with Al Manzo and it was smooth and easy. He worked with my budget to give me the best wedding that I could afford. We were not disappointed! At least 10 people have told me, (more than 10% of the guests) that this was the best wedding they have ever been to. No one had to say that, they could have said "we had such a nice time", but they went beyond that to let us know how pleased they were. The food was awesome. Cocktail hour hors d'oeuvres were passed around a plenty to the satisfaction of all the guests. Beefsteak tenderloins to giant shrimp cocktail, impressed everyone.There was never a line at the food stations or at the bar, something I have never seen at the many weddings I have been to. This place has a perfect mix of a classy feel with great house made food. The service was equally fantastic. The Maitre d (Gary) and his assistant were taking care of our every need all night. They had the room set up exactly as we had wanted with all the decorations we brought. The servers were on top of setup to cleanup, and seamlessly ran the party with out disruption. We had our ceremony outside on the Patio and the setting was beautiful as well as intimate. The guests loved the Ceremony-Cocktail hour-Reception flow. Our choice of a Cocktail/Reception was well received and is highly recommended by me, as it gives so many food choices that will please all the guests, and provide plenty of food. The Grand Conservatory changes when the sun goes down to a sparkling dream-room, and it felt like we had 2 different rooms. We were quoted a certain price for a party and I understand the word quote but when you say it will be a certain price including gratuity and tax and then it's $1,000 more that's messed up. He does this often. I won't be back, neither will my family. The owner is a d bag. Place smells like garbage and the bathroom attendant gives you dirty looks if you don't tip him for squirting soap into your hands with a spray bottle (low class) . Ps the food isn't worth two stars either. read more
