When we visited Steveston for our anniversary last year, we had our (then) newborn son in tow, and thus weren't able to visit this pub during the "adult hours" after 8pm, to enjoy the music and mingle with the lively (re: rowdy) crowd. This year, we dragged along one of our older sons to "babysit" while Mom and Dad popped downstairs to check out the local dive bar. Rustic wooden interior. Loud music. Hard alcohol. A slighty-aloof but generally competent bartender. Obnoxious drunk people (in one case, a bachelorette party trying their damnedest to get "white girl wasted"). Basically everything you expect in a dive bar. Feels like home. Regretfully, I didn't get to try the "best fish and chips in Steveston", or any of the mouth-watering burgers I saw flying out of the kitchen, because reasons, but based on smell alone, the food here appears to be excellent. And having this place attached to our favorite inn right above, despite the thumping music beating away into the wee hours of the night on weekends, is just icing on an already enjoyable cake. One line review: An excellent experience. We went for a date night. It was a great place for our date. Unlike previous visits, we were spotted and seated quickly on their patio -- very pleasant and more COVID-safe for this immune-compromised reviewer. We ordered: - Memphis hot chicken bites -- pretty, saucy, good pickles, took the edge off - Buck burger (with chowder substituted for the fries) - Fish and chips (decent) - House salad - big enough for two The food was well-executed and there was plenty. I thought we had over-ordered; my wife thought it was perfect. Sadly, they were out of the beta charge juice, to which we were looking forward. Our server R provided friendly, excellent service. Went for happy hour with a buddy and decided to stay closer to home... Havent been to the buck in a while so we both decided, why not!! - since we both lived in the area. We were really happy with the quality of the food. Despite it being happy hour pub food...we were very impressed. The burger was juicy and huge! The side hand sliced chips were crispy and freshly made. Not too oily and greasy. The wings were hot, spicy, and garlicky! The fish tacos tasted fresh and were done right. The beer was cold and came in 9-12oz...really there was nothing to complain about. Service was with a smile, story, care, and no pressure attitude. We were always attended to and made to feel really welcome. Im happy to have a pub like this just in my hood. I literally walked like 7mins to get here. No need to drive so it means i can have 3 pints. Lol. Love it!! read more

Popped in to watch a Canuck game and have a burger. Came away disappointed with both: Canucks lost and burger was undercooked and cold; as well, the service was sloooow. Buck couldn't help the Nuck's puck luck, but need to work on the yuck yuck. On the positive side, the ambience was warm and the beer was cold. read more

I love this pub. The feel is great with the nice woodwork and a nice long bar. This biggest issue I have is how few beer choices there are. With Smithwicks, Bass and Harp signs on the glass behind the bar and not a drop of it for sale there. Those are excellent beers and should be on tap in a beautiful bar like the Buck. And I didn't see a Guiness tap either. The bartender told me Smithwicks wasn't even sold in Canada any more which is incorrect. read more

Excellent food and service! And great classic pub ambience. Chicken tenders were super sized and delicious. Black bean burger with a salad was tasty and light. We were saving ourselves for the Sticky Toffee Pudding - a great decision. This pud was the best I've had in ages. Ned, the bar manager in his fabulous flowered shirt, provided top notch service and mixed a neat Spicey, Spicey - a delectable, light drink. Came here with a group of 17 people for Sunday morning brunch/family reunion. Really cool atmosphere inside and we felt so welcome by our server. We all ordered the same thing: $5.99, yup I said $5.99 for the Traditional Breakfast: 2 eggs done any style, bacon or sausage, hash browns and choice of bread. The food was solid and our server was extremely patient and attentive to us. He was amazing! Buck & Ear is located in the heart of Steveston which made it the perfect location for exploring afterwards. We will be back for their Friday night Prime Rib dinner special! read more

My wife and I came to this pub on a Saturday afternoon in August.. the area is touristy and there were droves of people walking about and loads of people on the docks. The first problem we encountered was parking. Although we learned later that parking for patrons was free. That was not made obvious by all the Pay Here signs in the parking lot. When we entered the pub at 2pm in the afternoon. It was near empty. 6 people including us. For us we know that this is usually a sign of problems. We have been here before, several times with a few years span between visits. This pub has a emotional connection for my wife and I. This time it has completely changed. The menu was extremely limited. There was zero GF options other than them pushing a hamburger with a GF bun or something they called "Gluten Aware". What does that even mean other than to cover their a$$. This indicates to us that they are truly not a GF friendly restaurant. We spent a better part of 20 minutes going back and forth with the server, whom did not really know much about the menu, not really seemed to care. We decided to pay for our drinks a leave to go to a restaurant that was more in line with our needs. When we went to pay. The lowest tip option was 18%. This whole tip culture has to change. I normally tip a consistent 15%. But when I see greed. I tip 0. The Buck and Ear lost likely a $100 to $120 bill that day with a normal tip. We both agreed that we will never be back read more

Years ago this place was an epic pub but it has changed hands multiple times and now it's a shadow of its former self. The venue itself is awesome. Classic pub design with lots of inviting nooks for sipping libations and catching up with friends. Unfortunately today the place is run by kids who have no idea how a pub should be operated. The service is pathetic and they just don't seem to care. If your idea of basic pub service is to never see your glass go dry, you'll be sorely disappointed here. I sat for 15 minutes with an empty glass actively trying to catch someone's attention and never did get another beer. The food at the Buc used to be memorable. Now it's ok but nothing to keep you coming back like the famous bacon wrapped pirogies you could order by the dozen years ago. read more

I've been coming here for years and each time the food gets worse. I keep coming back because the service is awesome, the location is fantastic and I just genuinely hope that this time I'll get the kitchen on a good day. Sorry Buck, a cold under cooked burger that smelled and tasted like old grease (from what I assume came from a dirty grill) just doesn't cut it. The manager was so nice and understanding. I wanted to pay something, at least for the side salad I ate and so I could tip the wait staff for the full value of the meal. But the manager told me not to worry about it and gave me a coupon for a free entree. Maybe food isn't what the Buck is about anymore. Anyway, lots of other good restaurants in the village. The Buck's menu is becoming very limited. The Caesar salad came without croutons or garlic bread and the beer was only warm. Disappointing.

Went for prime rib Friday it was very disappointing, then ordered the donuts with dipping sauce even worse they were pre packaged grocery store donuts dry and concealed with cinnamon thrown haphazardly on top. Definitely not going back. Server was great, the wine glasses were dirty and handed to us still wet. Sat outside on patio that was fine. I bought their Buck Burger through UberEats delivery. Found it from a BOGO promotion they were running with UberEats. I have to commend them that the prices are exactly as their menu prices (many places will jack up the BOGO item menu to get the full menu price because UberEats pays the merchants 50% of the free item). The burger is delicious. It's one of the better burgers I've had. For approximately $19 you get a burger (with generous amount of bacon, mushrooms, and cheese on a home-made patty) with a side of fries, or salad. There's a nice char on the beef patty and the beef patty was clearly ground beef than the mixture of starch and beef with frozen beef patties. Preparation was quick and the burger good. With the other free burger, I opted to upgrade the side to a chowder for an additional $5. This wasn't very worth it; the chowder came in what seem like a small sauce container. It was packed with seafood such as fish and shrimps but was a little salter than I would have liked. However the burger was an excellent burger. If you're looking for a good burger in Richmond, the Buck Burger at the Buck & Ear would not disappoint. read more

This place was really good, wasn't my first choice, but glad it all worked out. It was fairly empty when I arrived, but service was quick. Staff was friendly and very attentive. I ordered the Buck Poutine fries and a flatbread. This was my first time having poutine fries, so naturally I added pulled pork! These were amazing, all the flavors blended so well together. The flat bread was also very good, lots of flavor. The bring you a bottle of water so you can refill your glass as needed, pretty good concept in my opinion. The negative comments about slow service is ridiculously spot on. When not busy, food took over 45 minutes for two people. Salad and fish and chips was ordered. Prices inflated and unreasonable for the area. Their beer prices are astronomical. There's no alcohol and beer menu. You should ask before ordering on the prices. Food is decent though. It's not enough though to increase my rating above 2.5. However, the fish batter wasn't crispy enough and a little too moist. Not the best in Steveston as they claim. Won't recommended or return here. Lesson learned. read more

This is a large bar. It's old. Well known to stevestoners. A lot of crazy things have happened here and the pub has been written about in a newspaper. Not saying it's bad or good but of course improvements could be made. Such as the fact that this bar is very dark. Even on the sunniest days it's like walking into a cave. The service is average but could use warmth. Seems it's at its best when there is some form of entertainment here such as alive band, or hosting an event. Some days you just want a decent burger that hits the spot and today was one of those days. The Buck is a Steveston institution and with the right group is a great pub- so many things happen here: DJ nights, trivia nights, dinners paired with beer or wine events, live music - they cater to all age groups. Decent pub grub - today's choice was the Guinness Burger with minestrone and totally met my expectations (warning - high sodium!) it's a staple of mine there. Staff is always happy and service is good. Glad that when the Joseph Richard Group acquired The Buck a few years back they kept its English pub-like dated decor. read more

It's a Friday night. The bar side was packed but restaurant side was pretty empty. Took a long time to be seated and service was super slow. Lots of interesting mixed drinks but not cheap. Food was good. I have to mention the best calamari in my life - fresh to a point that you can see the juice coming out from the golden skin. Texture is soft unlike other calamari that is previously frozen with no taste and chewy. We also ordered prime rib (only available Friday and Saturday if my memory serves me right). The taste is only 7 out of 10 but portion is pretty good especially with the side dishes. read more

The place has been a landmark in Steveston forever. I've been to eat only few times recently. The food is good but, the service is VERY SLOW. Could definitely step it up in that department. Nobody seems to be posted to any particular areas of the place. The servers seem to wander around and are not aware of who is looking after which patrons. Very unorganized. After having been here many times now, I can safely say that Richmond is in dire need of a real watering hole. People only go to the "Buck" if they're too lazy to go to Vancouver. The servers are horrible, slow and ungrateful for their tips. Also, the place has broken out in fights in a few times in the past few months where they've kicked everyone out of the bar. This is a place where everyone knows each other. The atmosphere here is pretty nice. I really like the bar and billiards room. It is really a pretty busy place. Every Friday and Saturday night the place is packed. That provides for a good atmosphere. The service here, however, sucks as bad as anyplace can. I do not like arrogant servers and bartenders who treat their guests like dogs. This is that place. It might be related to all the people causing trouble here...but hey since when did you treat everyone that way! These are the worst bartenders and servers in Vancouver hands down. The band is the same every weekend that we have been here. Thats not a big deal....I'm not normally paying much attention to them or the dance floor anyways. The food is good and is on par with pub food anywhere in the city. Overall, the only reason I give a rating this low is that, unless you plan on drinking so much you don't remember this place (most people here seem to be doing just that), then don't come here. When I walked in the door first impression was "This looks like a pub" , first look at the menu "This looks like a really great pub menu" second look at the menu "There are some really interesting things on this menu" like Bacon Wrapped Perogies, Halibut Corn Chowder and Tobacco Onions. "Black and Blue Steak Salad".....on top of Romaine .lettuce.....diced apples, craisens...."The Aloha"..ham and pinapple...."Fish and Chips"....lighy breased....."Pan Seared Thai Halibut".....Pacilfic halibut...."Daily Pasta Special"...ask your sever...."Grilled Chicken Quesidillas"...."Grilled Vegetable Quesidillas"...."Buck Roasted Goat Burger"...topped with Goasts cheese.... Look I know the work that goes into writing menus, I've written my fair share. Do you really want the hard work that you put into writing that menu to be wasted because you can't be bothered to run a spell check. Okay back to the food....25 minutes later....only table eating. Bad. Non crisp bacon, perogies still cold in the middle presentation sucked. Chicken greasy, like greasy enough that it ran down my arm...usually this is okay with me, but only if it's a burger. Little to no Halibut in the chowder, should be named Corn Halibut Chowder. Sorry guys but your menu reads better than it is. The 1 star is not for the food or service. However it is for the $80-120 ticket for being 8 minutes late to return to our vehicle!! If we were an hour, half hour I can see that but 8 MINUTES!! Paying the bill and using the restroom. This is so unacceptable. When I went back in to complain I was meet with oh ya we get tickets all the time. The man is an asshole!! There was only 1 other vehicle in the lot. If you want people to visit your restaurant and spend ( like we do) an average of $100.00 you need to fix this because it is your business that will suffer. Update: Since I wrote my review, the pub has undergone new ownership, and I'm not as thrilled with either the food or service since then. They are really amping up their entertainment (live music and more) which is great if you're into that sort of thing, but this also means that loud music starts as early as 6pm, and you can forget about being able to have a conversation over dinner at that point. The menu is the same and so are most of the weekly specials (though they no longer advertise their specials). Mostly the quality and taste of the food is the same, but little things - like, having fresh sides on the appetizers that you actually want to eat, providing handy wipes when you order wings, or bringing share plates when you are sharing a meal with someone - is no longer provided (though you can, as I do, ask for the plates every single time!). Instead of the hand wipes, they bring a hot dish of lemon water however they bring this to your table long before your meal arrives so that it is stone-cold and unpleasant by the time you wish you had one of those handy-wipes. Regardless, the wings are not as good anymore so don't bother. Worst of all, they no longer have bread pudding, AND their best server left with the introduction of the new owners. If I knew where that head chef and server was working now, I would be going there instead of the Buck! I'll keep trying and hope that the new management comes around with some improvements, but for now it is not a great place to eat and socialize with your mates after work. read more

I had never been to this pub until I had attended a fund raiser pub night. The ambiance of this place is pretty neat (from the games room to the seating/eating area. There are so many different areas inside to accomodate your group (big or small). I was so incredibly impressed at how attentive and friendly the staff were during this extremely packed event! I ended up eating a hamburger and found it to be quite good for a pub style venue. On Saturday they had live musical entertainment followed by a DJ later in the evening. On a sunny Sunday late summer/early afternoon it's an ok place to stop, if you want good beer choices & a patio. Get their blonde something flavourful beer, hints of citrus with/without the orange slice. Food? The Burger w/fries is nothing special. For the higher prices how about giving more than a girl-handful of shoestring fries (at a pub)??? See Tugboat Annie's for ideas! I coulda had more&better fries at any fastfood place. Looks like many of these places have shrunk serving sizes with higher prices! Just like the popular fish n chips places nearby (Pajo's are you listening), I know it's in the old tourist fishing village of Steveston. Fish tacos are phenomenal , chippers are wayyyy better than fries, drink happy hour menu is a great deal and they have digital menus, lots of hand sanitizer and they take names and numbers of people who come in. This a re-review. My wife and I live in the area, and were regulars at the Buck for years. A few months back, we were disappointed on several occasions due primarily to the lagging quality of the food, and the early and overly loud start-up of the live music on weekends.The staff have always been great, and the venue / location is perfect for a casual drink and eats. A particular favorite was the prime rib dinner on weekends which became dismal. I'm happy to say that any of the food our group has tried is now much improved, and the prime rib is as good or better than ever. Could still stand to see the music volume down a little, but all else is great. read more
