Best hamburgers around! I always get the Patty Melt and my husband goes for more spice with The Ranch Hand. And thanks for adding Diet Coke to the fountain drinks! PS If you didn't know, this has same owners as The Chop House in Downtown Mount Vernon, which is why the burgers are out of this world. Same great beef as their steaks. read more

Just had a quick lunch in this gem of a place on the square in Mt. Vernon. Warm greeting, simple menu of great food! The Reuben sandwich was simply the best you'll find. And about the drinks, I wish that establishments would not have cantina in their name if they don't have a cantina. The Bull Pen Grill & Cantina Located in downtown Mt. Vernon, TX on the Square. We often detour around the freeway just to experience this beautiful yet small downtown. Kudos to the local business owners who have the vision to make this town a destination spot. On this visit we ordered a Ruben Sandwich and the Special of the Day, Wings. The Ruben was delivered to the table burnt, I sent it back to the kitchen. Second delivery was much better in appearance. The sandwich was skimpy with the meat serving on three quarters of the sandwich, leaving the remaining quarter with zero meat. Not impressive. The kraut flavor was good, but I did not plan on spending twelve dollars for a kraut sandwich with fries. The fries appeared to be on the burnt side yet they were limp. I'm not sure how that happens. The wings were tasty and moist on the inside. The best part of our meal. But unfortunately served with dark limp fries. While the "wings" were boneless, they did not appear to be wings. At my inquiry, the cook explained to me that "bone out" wings mean the "wings" are actually white breast meat and not dark wing meat. No signage anywhere stating that information. But now we know. I would order the "wings" again. Aside from thinking we were ordering actual wings, they were yummy and we did enjoy them. The unsweetened tea was a winner also. And refills are free. I do want to like this restaurant, this is our third visit and I do want to support small businesses, but unfortunately it just doesn't measure up for me. The cost value is not there. I don't much care for the business model of this restaurant. Immediately upon entering you see a sign stating that the establishment is NOW SELF-SERVE. You are handed a menu, you order and pay at the counter, handed self serve drink cups to serve yourself at the drink dispenser. Which is fine and good except you're paying restaurant prices not fast food/drive thru prices, and a tip request is included at the time of payment. At this point you've had zero service which carries throughout the dining experience. In support of small towns and small businesses my husband and I will eventually give The Bull Pen & Cantina another visit and review. Maybe this day was just an off day in the kitchen. Delicious sandwich! The chicken was soooo moist and the jalapeño ranch was perfectly spiced! You can ask for fresh grilled jalapeños, if you prefer. It was simply the best patty melt I have EVER eaten. The onion rings were also amazing . I have to disagree with the above 3 star post . Not at any time we're we ask or felt intimidated into leaving a tip. It's just the new technology that's out today. When you pay with credit card the choice to tip is at the end. No one asked you to tip or looked at you like you were being rude if you didn't. It's just how the credit card machine works. It was your choice to pay by credit card. The young girl was very nice and said nothing about a tip. I don't know how they could have done it any different and still be able to make a profit if they are even making a profit yet. Come on give them a little Grace and don't be so rude. We all know it's almost impossible to find any help these days and if you do find help they want you to pay them 15.00 plus and hour to sit on their phone. So I'm sure the owner is doing the best he can. I assume the owner is the chef and he is an awesome one. We have gone there 3 times in 2 1/2 weeks. It really is that good. It's really sad that someone gave them only 3 stars after saying the food was amazing and the chips were perfect, but since the computer he had used to pay by credit card had a place for a tip before getting his meal he felt intimidated so he only gave them a 3 stars. I'm not sure how you felt intimidated by anyone much less the young lady that took your order. ‍By the way it was your choice to pay by card and they didn't charge a service fee for you to use your credit card like so many small restaurants are having to do these days. You could have paid cash and you would have never known there was a place to ADD a tip if you so desired. If you decided to leave a tip after you ate that amazing burger you could have left it on the table or put it in the tip jar. But by no means we're you ever asked to leave one and to apply that you felt intimidated by the young lady is just ridiculous. Please people believe me the food deserves 5 stars. The food is delicious . My husband and I shared the patty melt and onion rings and 2 drinks and it was under 20.00 with a tip. We left full and very happy. It cost us 21.00 to eat and WhatABurger these days and this was nothing like Whataburger it isn't FAST FOOD like the above post said. It's really hard to keep a restaurant going these days with the prices of food and labor I'm not sure how any of these restaurants make any profit. I don't know the owners of the Bull Pen but as much as we have been going lately we will get to know them I have no doubt. Matter of fact I just sent my husband up to get me a patty melt and he's going to try the Jalapeño burger. I can't wait to let y'all know how he likes the burger. FYI the jalapeño burger at Whataburger is 12.00 so 13.00 is a steal at The Bull Pen. Again don't pay attention to the 3 stars read his post about how good the food was. Please people DO BETTER, BE KINDER, and show some GRACE. I would hate to see the few restaurants in Mount Vernon to close because of the reviews some people leave after they said the food was awesome. Some people that use Yelp only look at the stars and they don't read the reviews. Go eat there and find out for yourself. You won't be disappointed.
