Stopped in while back in the area. Nice burgers with fresh made buns. I always would just get the traditional burger with fries due to their amazing sauces. They make their own ketchups and sauces and these are prefect for the fries and to pour some on each bit of the burger. The chipotle cocoa ketchup has a nice zing that works well for the fries. If you want a more desert feel the roasted marshmallow dip is good in small amounts as it is quite sweet. The garlic parmesan aioli is one of my favorite to pour over the burgers after you add some of their while grain mustard on the burger. read more

My husband and I dropped off our daughter at KU this weekend. We decided to grab a bit to eat and shop a little down town. We love how downtown keeps a lot of the older architecture and reuses a lot of the old shops and buildings to house new ships or even restaurants. We visited the Casbah Bar burgerstand and it was a joy. There are 3 levels, you place your order at the bar and pick it up when your name is called. They have plenty of sauces to enjoy with your basket side order or on your hand held. They have a little something for everyone including the kids. We were tempted to try the shakes, but maybe next visit. I enjoyed the Kobe burger my husband had the Smoke burger and we split a basket of regular fries. The basket sides are big enough to share. There was one sauce we were curious about, the marshmallow sauce. Yes marshmallow sauce. It is supposed to go good with their sweet potato fries. We tasted it on its own. It had good taste (rice krispie treats) but was too sweet for the regular fries. We will definitely be back to try more of their tatsy menu. read more

Lots of customers (dine-in and carry-out) almost all tables were full on a rainy Saturday afternoon. Awesome food- burgers cooked to order; polenta fries were fantastic but disappointed to see I was charged 15% hospitality (tip) at the register without the cashier asking "would you like to leave a tip?" This was on top on the tax! This is a fabulous self serve restaurant. I stood in line placed my order; I poured my own fountain drink; retrieved my food when my name was called and I cleaned up after myself placing the plastic food baskets in the collection area. Stopped into Lawrence for some work and a friend brought me to this spot as he new they had more than the single, ubiquitous Impossible option for the vegan/vegetarian crowd. I was surprised to see they had about 4 regular veg offering for burgers and a special veg option on the Specials menu. I opted for the spicy shiitake burger and was not disappointed. They also offer a wide variety of sides, to which we decided to split a basket of truffle fries. Additionally, they have one of my favorite things- a sauce bar with their own homemade sauces and ketchups. Good food, the prices are more expensive than most businesses downtown. In my opinion for portion sizes and price Dempsey beats them in both aspects. I also enjoy the burgers at Dempseys more. The burger stand has good sauces and interesting flavors to try although the food is simple and the taste doesn't live up to how the food looks. I think if you don't take your food very seriously then you can go here and I know people who enjoy it although if I'm downtown and want a burger and fries Dempseys would definitely be my go to. read more

On a lucky break I asked a student at KU what's the must eat joint in town and she sent me here. I enjoyed a late lunch in this very cool establishment. Friendly and obliging staff uncomplicated yet interesting menu, wonder bar area, spacious dining areas, and of course terrific burgers. The order and call style of service is a bit off putting especially if the place is packed. I understand this technique is to encourage you to hit the house made sauce bar. That said I'm not that nimble and so I sat at the bar which eliminates the need to retrieve your own order. You must try the Duck fat fries!!! They were among the best fries I've had in a long time. We went here at 1:30 pm on a Thursday and it was actually pretty busy. Laid back yet friendly staff. You order at the counter and pick up yourself at the (other) counter down the stairs. I would say it was only a 10 minute wait for food. I got the Kobe medium rare. My bf got the Fire medium rare. And then we split the small Cajun fries (only get large if you are splitting a basket between 3+ people FYI). All of the food is excellent. Next to the soda fountain, there are about 10 different house made sauces for dipping. All 3 we tried were excellent. This is my favorite burger place in Lawrence by far. read more

A Photo of my Burger cooked to "Medium" from my last review 6 years ago is attached to this review update. Completely raw. I ordered Medium Well today, and it was a warm pink ALL the way through. When I alerted them of this, they recooked the burger. The new burger was still warm pink all the way through. They refunded me. The food is very expensive and nothing special in my opinion. The atmosphere is cool and it's fun on game days. If you have an allergy MAKE SURE TO TELL THE CASHIER. Probably the best place in Lawrence for a burger and fries. Either this place wasn't around when I went to college here or I didn't know about it. Either way, it's a good thing because I would've eaten here at least once a week. They have great, unique, flavorful burgers here and the fun is trying them all, but that's difficult to do because you will have a favorite you'll want to come back to time and time again. Mine is the Black and Blue burger with blue cheese, granny smith apple chutney, and assorted seasonal greens. They pile the stuff on high and it becomes a glorious mess while you eat it. My date ordered the Spicy Shiitake Burger, that is a shiitake-crimini mushroom patty, with habanero cream cheese, sliced avocado, and assorted seasonal greens too. She gets it every time and loves the snot out of it. The menu is a-la cart and we ordered a basket of truffle fries and another basket of their beer-battered onion rings. Holy shit, both are off the hook and, arguably, the best I've ever had. Trust me, get the basket for a group because you all will be fighting for every piece. Make sure to go to the sauce bin to sample their chipotle cocoa ketchup, the jalapeno ranch, or their garlic parmesan aioli. The place is fun with ample seating inside and out. They extended the patio into the street and that was a good move because it's nice to sit outside. Every time we come to Lawrence, this is always on the list of places to eat. One of our kids asked for American cheese on their burger and the lady advised they don't have American cheese. Well according to the big menu on the wall you do. We ordered medium on all of the burgers, but one came out pretty raw. Really cool looking place. I'd probably give it another try, but don't think I could put up with that lady's scowl again. This place has everything... amazing food, great drinks, awesome atmosphere and a cool staff. It almost makes me want to go back to college. The room includes three-ish levels, with one sort of being a split level and does a super good job of making a dank dive into a super clean and hip space. There are paper menus along the waiting wall, but everything is also written on a gigantic chalk board hanging above the bar. I think you should just order a burger, because they cook one of the best burgers in the Midwest, but if you like variety then there are hot dogs, sandwiches and even salads (plus sides) that can be paired with whatever type of refreshment wets your whistle. They have soda, shakes, ALCOHOLIC SHAKES (!,) beer and even spirits at your service. Please be sure to order slow so you don't over do it. Now, not only is the above paragraph full of tasty morsels, but the restaurant offers a sauce bar. You read this correctly. Normally I wouldn't call attention to a sauce bar except this one is full of plenty of home made recipes that will enhance your meal. Think, "Jalapeno Ranch," "Spicy Casbah BBQ," "Guajillo Chili Dip," and "Guinness Whole Grain Mustard." Pretty awesome, right? A lot of thought and care went into these and I recommend that you give them a test drive. This place brings me down a memory lane. Wow during my college days, so many of my friends loved this place and I didn't get how they loved burgers so much but I would always go here with them. I don't know if it's cause it's been so long but the burger was so amazing. I always eat half of my burger and save the other half for later so they are pretty big burgers. I think their burgers taste wayyy better now than when I was a college student. The truffle fries is what they are also known for but I think I'm one of the few that don't care for them. I like their duck fat fries the most. I love all their dipping sauce options. My favorites are their jalapeño ranch and garlic aioli. As I was looking at their menu, I feel like there are more vegetarian options compared to in the past. But more people are interested in vegetarian options now so that makes sense. Overall this is one of the best places on Mass street in Lawrence. Now I know why people have burger cravings. This place was great! I came here with two friends on a Saturday night. It was a little busy but still some tables available. This place had that bar feel to it but that was just me. There were menus on the counter and also there was a chalkboard version of the menu. The line to order was not long but it did take a few minutes for it to start moving. I ordered the Smoke Burger ($8.99) and a side of regular fries ($1.50). I felt that the price of the burger was pretty low which was just right for me. When your food was ready, they announced it for you to pick up. The condiments were all interesting and I can't remember the names to all of them. The only one that stood out to me was the marshmallow one which was good but could be a little sweet to some people. The Smoke Burger was delicious and I finished that burger so quick that I was a little disappointed I didn't eat slower. lol Everything in the burger tasted good and definitely would recommend it. The fries were good too. I tried some of my friend's Cajun fries and those were legit. If I could reorder, I would definitely go with the Cajun fries. The Poutine fries were interesting and were not bad in my opinion. You might want to only order a side of those instead of a basket but that's what I thought.
