Well, tonight we tested out this aggressive statement to see if it was true or just a marketing scheme. The front of the Burger Bar was illuminated in big red bold letters and the giant wedge fries were proudly positioned in the window for customers to salivate over. We pondered the wall menu for a bit then ordered the Classic Burger with fries and a soft drink combo. The chef tossed a big beef patty onto the flat grill and waited at a wooden table out front impatiantly about fifteen minutes. OMG, it was big, juicy and spiced perfectly with bacon and caramelized onions (see pic). The oversized seasoned fries went well with the burger. We were even more curious when finding out that it's a local burger spot with only 3 locations in Amsterdam. This one is located on Utrechtsestraat in the city center near Rembrandt Square. It appears to be a small space when you first enter. There's a downstairs kitchen with bar seating as well as a booth at the window. Their actual dining area is upstairs. We were greeted immediately and asked to sit anywhere. Our order was taken at the table. It was great service from the get-go! I think our biggest first impression was the cleanliness of the restaurant and bathrooms. You just don't see that level of clean just anywhere. The burgers here are exceptional. They are gourmet-type burgers that are cooked to order. We thought about getting fries with it, but decided not to after seeing the size of these burgers. I could barely eat it all. Our Mokum Cheese Burger was absolutely delicious and very juicy. I loved every topping. I can't name it all, but I know it had some type of aged cheese with a hint of horseradish in the sauce. The pickles were tasty. I wish I could give you every ingredient. All I know for sure is that it's made with Blonde d'Aquitaine beef. They have a cookbook for sale if you're interested. The drinks are varied from gin & tonic to beer, wine, and lemonade. I enjoyed their loose-leaf jasmine mandarin tea served hot. There's a little room upstairs for creative people who like to sketch. I saw some of them decorating the walls. Having a burger in different countries may seem uninspiring for some people. I've found it to be very telling of the local culture and flavor. Fair warning if you're bringing anyone squeamish about restaurant names: The wife wasn't thrilled about it going in, though the food won her over fast. Getting there was its own small adventure. The place sits down a narrow alley, and our Uber couldn't get us all the way to it, which turned into a bit of a hike. That happened to us more than once in Amsterdam, using the exact address didn't always mean the driver could actually reach the door, so budget a few extra minutes if you're headed here. I normally default to steak, but the menu had a burger topped with pulled pork that promised more meat than a straight cut, and I couldn't pass it up. Delicious. Genuinely one of the best burgers I've had. But the wife's flat iron steak might have stolen the night. Flat iron is one of the most underrated cuts out there, and this kitchen proved it. She was still talking about that steak days after we got home, enough that I ended up buying flat irons from Costco just to chase it. The atmosphere is cool and a little edgy, dim lighting, a lot of character, and yes, some genuinely creepy decor scattered around, including an old doll that stares at you like it's judging your order. It ran loud, but not so loud we couldn't hold a conversation across the table. Service was good, just on European time rather than American time. Getting the check took a while, which threw us off at first, but that's the norm across the EU, not a knock on this place specifically. Pricey, but worth every bit of it. The Favorite Ribs (24.50 Euro) were flavorful; the L'Incroyable 300gr (Ribeye; 34.50 Euro) was good, but our least favorite of what we ordered; the Le Cannibale Royale 170gr (burger) was super tasty.
