I took the standard butcher burger and it was perfect. A soft bun combined with fresh vegetables, a house made sauce and a medium beef burger. The burger patties are perfectly grilled american style! the buns are huge and perfectly grilled. i'm usually not a huge bun fan, i leave about half of it out but this one..i ate the whole thing. i got a butcher with blue cheese. my boyfriend got one with jalapenos and bbq sauce. i loved them both and can't wait to go back and try the others. sadly, the only reason i'm not giving it a 5 star is because the french fries were awful. maybe because it was really busy but it wasn't fried for a long enough time. it didn't have a crispiness to it and no salt on them. it's a shame to have such a perfect burger and disappointing fries. i mean don't burger and fries go hand in hand? read more

I don't eat burgers (or red meat often) but after a 20 km run I was in the mood for a good burger and a friend sent me here. It definitely hit the spot! I usually prefer a high-quality, gourmet organic burger, made with pasture-raised beef. My requirements are not easy to find in Amsterdam and I wound up here. While it didn't meet all my criteria, I'd definitely say it was of a good quality, much better than I expected. Lightly toasted bun. Juicy, well-seasoned meat. And a variety of sauces and trimmings. I had the Babaganoush and it was delicious! The fries were super salty and not the best I've had in Amsterdam. It's a small place with limited seating. American burger lover here. What can I say about my burger from the Butcher? I really liked the bun. The bun was a fluffy, slightly sweet brioche style, and really perfect actually. The love affair stops there. The meat itself was cooked to a fine temperature, but the patty itself was the size of a typical slider and literally flavorless. The lettuce was fresh and crisp but the whole thing (the butcher w/cheese) was so smothered in sauce it was almost unmanageable. The fries were delicious. For all the ravings about this place, it was pretty unfortunate, because it's a fast food joint. It's usually fries that they dump into the oil to re-fry/ re-grill. The patties also seemed like they were pre-made and from the freezer cause mine was a bit lukewarm when I received it. Simple as... Good burger, clumsy service. There is usually one guy that gets the phone orders and do the burgers. He is a gentleman even when he is busy... But the other guys are that are there to help, can even put up the fries to get ready same time as the burger. So expect a good burger and clumsy service. read more

Visiting from out of town and our family of four just wanted take out and wanted fries. Turns out another burger joint in the neighborhood does not do fries (crazy if you ask me) so we went a couple extra blocks and found The Butcher. We saw this on Yelp first and saw the negative comments about service and competencies but since we were doing take out who cared. We got three burgers and a veggie patty. The burgers were great, the fries were great, and the one of us who had the veggie patty said it was good too. I would definitely eat here again. Now, regarding the competency. They did great. One guy took our order and we had a couple special requests (plain and dry cheese only, medium well on all, no sauce on the veggie patty) and then he proceeded to start the burgers himself. He stayed on top of them through the whole process, while taking others orders. When they were done and he smiled and handed our to go bag over the counter I asked to confirm one of them was cheese only (kid would throw a fit if not), he smiled and said "of course". Got back to the apartment and everything was perfect. Medium well was, well, medium well. If we ever travel here again, we would definitely eat here again. American student and vegetarian here and I had been craving a veggie burger for a while. I decided the Butcher had a lot of awesome reviews so I would check it out. Its one of the businesses on the Albert Cuyp market. It took me a second to find it because google maps put the pin in a weird spot but I finally did. For future reference, the red coca cola light sign gives it away. Anyways, its pretty small inside but never a line. There are only a couple tables inside, but again never really a line so there isn't a problem getting one of them. And when you eat this burger, you WILL want to sit down. Especially if you get the farmers burger because that hollandaise sauce is going to be everywhere. I got a farmers burger but exchanged the patty with the veggie option and took off the ham. They make their veggie burgers there out of some strange puree of potato-like substance. It's served pretty hot, probably want to wait for it to cool down before biting into it. I've had better veggie burgers and I had to eventually start eating it with a fork and knife because everything was falling apart. It may have been the messiest burger I've gotten. TLDR; Burgers LOOK delicious but I'm not a huge fan of the veggie burger. read more

It was juicy and had good flavor, but bun kind of disintegrated after a few bites into it. The only negative is that after 10PM they started smoking and the place reeked of cigarettes. This striped down burger bar has great burgers and beers. The prices are towards the higher end of what is on offer in Amsterdam, but this doesn't stop people from filling up the bar stools and small tables lining the wall on any given night. There is also a separate bar tucked downstairs at the back, but you need to know the password to get in ;-) read more
