Someone help me out. Wife and I came here after reading the rave reviews. As American expats we keep the bar pretty low for burgers, but this is was mind boggling bad. Between the lax hygiene standards, piss poor service, and the slowest burger order ever...skip. We got our burger and were so tired of waiting we stopped asking for our drink and fries. 27 euros for 2 burgers, 2 fries, and 2 drinks. Are you fricken kidding me?!? Skip. This place is cool. Its in the Pijp which also has this great outdoor market. The place up front is just a small modern space where you come in and get a burger. The burger was pretty good. I got the most basic one, meat was cooked just how I like it. Everything was fresh. If you email ahead, then you can get a password to go to this back room restaurant/club. You walk to the back of the place and there is a steel door where you announce your secret password to a buzzer. Inside it is pretty cool, and has a like a club-type feel without room to dance. Anyways, the menu is different back their. They have mini-burgers instead of full sized ones along with some other apps and steaks. The food in both places was good, but they get 5 stars just because I think it is cool that you need a password to get in the back. read more

No, I wouldn't order the 'raw salad' (peanuts and cabbage.. why?) and yes, I think these might be the best burgers in Amsterdam. Very small place with super limited seating, but the food is decent and honest. Ambience is charming, "butcher kitsch", until you realize you're freezing your tits off because the door jams and never shuts. There's always questionable and moody looking people walking through the restaurant going towards the back that seem to be off-duty staff, looking dodgy at best. What's up with that? Other than the fact that this is perhaps a money laundering front, the food is quite good, and open it's til late, which is in this town is a freaking miracle. After a late night it hits the spot. Someone should also tell them that a sausage on a hamburger bun does not a hotdog make. I'm a bit exhausted of the Dutch trying to make hot dogs happen by putting worst on a bun -- if you want a "real" hot dog in this town, the realest it gets is a food truck on Dam (eek). As a fish and chips connoisseur I also have to say don't get the cod father, as the batter is limp and greasy. Stick to the beef burgers, because they don't have much of clue otherwise. It took a while for the hubby and I to find this burger joint. The marketplace was in full bloom on a lovely Saturday. The burger joint with super yummy burgers but super limited seating was hidden behind a lingerie clothing stand hehe. I ordered The Butcher while the hubby got a burger with aubergines. The burger was delicious, cooked right in front of you through a clear glass separator. There weren't enough seats, however if you wait a bit, you will get a seat. This is a review for the "secret kitchen." With all the fanfare and hoop jumping required to get a reservation, I expected more. I really liked the appetizer and the dessert. The entree selection wasn't very inspired. I got a glimpse of the menu with prices (at first we were given menus without prices), and the prices of our a la carte items were lower than what we paid for the set menu. That just doesn't sit right with me. It probably would've been fine had the drinks were good, but they were just ok. I expect more from a speakeasy, and I had much better drinks all over Amsterdam in other restaurants and cocktail bars. I think it's over-hyped and wouldn't recommend this. The actual burgers from this place (I tried them at Foodhallen) are much better than this restaurant. I'll hands down say that this is the best burger I've had in Europe. Super juicy non-meatloaf, perfectly cooked patties with incredible buns. I would normally tell you to take this with a grain of salt, as I was E.W.I. (eating while intoxicated) at 2am, but I'm confident. Everyone who got the beef burgers were super happy. The veggie burger is hands down the worst I've ever had. It's a fried, greasy, potatoe-y, bland mess. All but one bite went in the trash. I get it: Don't go to a place with a cow hanging in the window for a veggie burger, but if you are going to do it so badly then don't offer it at all. The BBQ sauce is not at all what you expect if you're American; this is too sweet, not at all smokey, and has an odd curry/cinnamon flair. Fries are okay. The veggies you get on the burger are the best part: Nice thick cut tomato, lettuce, pickle, etc. I'll definitely not go back, but everyone else was into it. read more

First, PEOPLE STOP WITH THE NEGATIVE REVIEWS ON A HAMBURGER PLACE. If you don't like it move on and spend your 10 Euro someplace else. The Butcher is a small business with a TWIST that is done very well. As a tourist that is always looking for something off the beaten path this spot was a great find. I was lucky enough to meet a beautiful hostess at a restaurant I will not mention that was kind enough to put my name on a list and provide me with a password (changes daily ) that would lead to one of my best nights in Amsterdam. You enter what looks like a traditional chips an burger place that while small is tastefully decorated. (the area its in is sketchy but I liked that ) You make your way to the back and into a hallway where if you are lucky you are seen on a small camera and you give the right password. If that works out you have a great time and on your way out you get a burger and fries that HIT THE SPOT. All in all a GREAT TIME! read more

Ok so let me start by saying I didn't see the appeal. I went there with a bunch of friends and was really enthusiastic to check it out! But honestly overpriced, really cramped and nothing special. Well I'm a vegetarian so I don't really have a say in this, but I came here with 3 non-veg friends. I ate their fries and they were really, really good. Not too crunchy, quite thick (so yeah natural potatoes). The burgers actually look good. I mean, the bread is fluffy, the patty was apparently juicy and flavorful. Great big burgers! Medium and pink as a burger should be. Well seasoned. A brioche style bun is always good. Great branding. Loved the popcorn chicken too very tasty and crispy. I had the Truffle burger. The bottom bun was cold like it had come out of the fridge unfortunately and the burger could have been a bit warmer in general but it was a take away so I could fix that at home. It was very tasty. Good crispy fancy lettuce and fresh tomato. He had the Benedict burger and loved it. I had food envy. This had hollandaise sauce and an egg in it as well as ham. We didn't need to get chips/fries too and couldn't finish it. I would have given them a three without the really good chicken and the five star rating from him as well as their delivery service. They also sent the wrong sauces and the portions were very small. I doubted if the extra sauces we ordered were even sent. After an overnight flight (without eating) from the East Coast of the US, the wife and I arrived in AMS shortly before noon and immediately made a dash towards De Foodhallen (filled with a bunch of food stands - think Chelsea Market in NYC or Union Market in DC). There are zero meat juices to be seen. The bun was burnt in the inside from being left on the grill too long and soft on be outside. I ordered mine with jalapeños and got one. One single slice of jalapeños!?! My burger also smelt funny. Not sure what it was but it wasn't a good smell... kind of musty. Looks popular for the british stag party crowd, but when i was there they were just beginning their night not quite liquored up yet. I got the cowboy burger and thought it was great. Holy COW (Literally. It's hanging in the window.) is how you get greeted at The Butcher. I would think the place is somewhat hidden when the Albert Cuyp market is in full swing, but when the streets are cleaned up, you just need to look for a neon sign that basically tells you what is in store for you: "Burgers" and "Coca Cola". When you walk in, you can see magic in the making as there are usually thick patties on the grill. They only have a handful of burgers but they do them well (pun intended). I ordered the Silence of the Lambs burger. It came out big, thick, and a juicy medium-well -- which according to my burger research in Amsterdam is pretty good. The burger patty and buns are also well-constituted so the whole thing does not fall apart as you eat it. The worst thing is when you run out of patty and are stuck with just a bun! The decor is pretty cool with educational diagrams on various cuts of meat scattered throughout. There is limited seating inside but there is also a bench outside where you can enjoy a burger and watch De Pijp go by.. The only knock I have about this place is the price is slightly higher than I would pay for a gourmet burger (8.50 euro) that does not come with a side of chips. But for an occasional indulgence, it's a pretty filling meal. read more

I had to find a burger joint in Amsterdam pretty darn soon, my luck with Indonesian Food in this city was running out, with the help of Yelp, I dragged my hubby- a healthy picky eater thru the neighborhood. For many of the locals in De Pijp, this place is a bit hard to miss when you've been on a wild (or not so wild) night of drinking! They're open until 3AM over the weekend so it means when you're on your last legs and all the bars have closed, you can still find a warm and funny haven, filled with fried foods and juicy hamburger, and other drunken friends! The hambugers here are amazing and they are cooked to order- and to your liking. Like your patty medium? These guys behind the counter will cook it to perfection. Want it charred to a crisp? Well.. each to their own. And each patty is seasoned to perfection. So so tasty! Worth a mention, the popcorn chicken! Delicious battered cubes of chicken fillet.. I usually order these instead of frites.. mostly because I can steal a frites or two from my drinking partners in crime. But beware the wait. Sweet potato fries were good, but for almost 5 euros portion was very small. The next lamb burger was off the grill which you can watch from the seating. Travelling solo through Amsterdam I wanted to check out the much fancied 'De Pijp', and around lunchtime I got hungry for, well, lunch. I found this place on Yelp and then in person in the Albert Cuyp market although it is slightly obscured by the market stalls. I'm quite keen on burgers and love finding new quality ones. I got the basic cheeseburger "The Butcher with Cheese", but skipped out on the belgian fries they had on offer. I thought the price (around 9 euros) was a bit steep for a lunchtime burger but decided to splash the cash anyway. They serve this burger on a big sweet brioche bun which honestly tastes great. The meat is Aberdeen Angus and cooked just right (i.e. medium rare), and they've topped the patty with a local dutch emmental cheese. Tasty. As any good burger should have, the burger sauce is delicious and abundant (although I got extra!), rounding out a quality burger. It's not a slight that I didn't give it 5/5, I just feel the place was missing that extra touch that makes you go "Wow". Anyway, if you're making you're way through the Albert Cuyp market, or are just in Amsterdam looking for a good burger then check this place out! read more
