Pastrami sandwich and fries. Both way to salty and gobs of sauerkraut, which made it impossible to eat.

I use to be a regular when they first opened and loved it there. After covid I went back and it wasn't the same. No more pickles or side served with their sandwiches? The food has been extremely salty and just okay. I really like this place, but have been disappointed the last two times. Doubt I'll go back a third. Service and ambiance are great, but the food doesn't match!

I visit this spot about 4-5 times a year, and unfortunately this most recent visit was the weakest so far. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Service has noticeably declined, the food quality wasn't up to the standard I've experienced here before, and while the ambiance remains unchanged, it didn't make up for the overall experience.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] That said, if you're vegan, this restaurant is still worth a visit. The menu offers a wide variety of plant-based options that do a solid job of mimicking meat and provide plenty of choice. Metered street parking is readily available nearby.

I've been here a few times because I love that it's a classic deli-style lunch spot where I can order anything on the menu even though I don't eat meat. That said, this is really a place you bring your meat-eating friends who love the taste of meat -- they somehow magically make non-meat taste like meat. I've enjoyed the sandwiches when ordering fresh, but on my most recent visit I was alone and grabbed a take-and-go roast beef and cheddar. Unfortunately, it was soggy and dry at the same time -- soggy bread, dry protein, and mostly just a mustard flavor. I couldn't finish it. Just bad overall, and I wish the lettuce had at least saved it. Bonus and nice for Berkeley is that the coffee is free and fresh. $18 for a bad sandwich and chips was disappointing.

My favorite vegan spot in the Bay Area. I always make sure to make the trip whenever I'm here. Butchers son has vegan food you can't find anywhere else. They have something for every craving and even my non vegan friends and family love it. Everyone who works here is super sweet and [[HIGHLIGHT]]they have a nice outdoor area.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Def recommend trying this place out if you haven't!

[[HIGHLIGHT]]Such a fun little vegan deli with a cute outdoor back patio.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]I love grabbing sandwiches here with friends and dining al fresco.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] The BLAT is delicious and so is the squash ricotta sandwich. I will have to come back to try others, as the menu is quite extensive. The all-vegan concept is fun and I enjoyed the fake meats. They are delicious! Service was super quick and staff friendly.

So refreshing to find unique deli inspired vegan options. The panko crusted shrimp appetizer was yummy, as was the fried chicken sandwich and lobster roll. The imitation chicken was the most convincing, followed by the shrimp, then the lobster last, in my opinion. They were all tasty regardless. I found that the sauces on all three made it easy to tire of the meal quickly. Got a lemon blueberry (or blackberry, I forget) cheesecake for dessert. This was worth skipping. I was not interested in finishing it. They have complimentary coffee here, which is nice. I would be happy to come back to try more- there are so many intriguing items on the menu!

BLAT sandwich and a Chocolate chip cannoli

If you're into vegan or plant-based sandwiches, checkout The Butchers Son! First time here and I would definitely come back to try some of the other menu items. My husband and I decided to share a BLAT sandwich and the ingredients were fresh and tasted like it was homemade. I'm glad we ended up sharing the sandwich because the portion was large. We also ordered a chocolate chip cannoli but honestly I would probably pass on it. I was hoping it would taste fresh but it was kinda hard like it had been chilling in the fridge for a little while. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Plenty of tables, staff is friendly and a very chill place to hangout.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]We came here on a Sunday close to noon (like 11:30am) and it wasn't busy. It wasn't until after we got our food that we noticed a line forming out the door.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]

Lobster roll with garlic Parmesan fries

STEPH JUDGEMENT: Great vegan food and friendly service. We were meeting some friends for lunch in Berkeley and they suggested this place. They make all their own vegan cheeses and meats (their cheeses are all nut-based, fyi), and everything was impressive. I had the "lobster" roll and the hubby had the chopped "steak" and cheese--both with sides of fries. No one would mistake my mushroom "lobster" for the real thing, but it was delicious nonetheless. The hubby really enjoyed his sandwich too. On our way out we got a tub of chocolate chip cookie dough and some cold cuts and cheeses to enjoy later. If you're looking for a plant-based eatery in this area, you can't go wrong here.

Steak and cheese

Steak and cheese. The idea is not to expect the same as an old Philly cheesesteak. But it brings the same joy when eating it. It was packed and could barely take a bite without it all shooting out. Nice hearty roll, flavorful steak and plenty of cheese. Added cooked onions, lettuce and tomato. Hit the spot. Side bacon Mac and cheese. Love this side dish

Visited on a Wednesday around 4:30pm and the restaurant wasn't too busy yet! Limited indoors seating. They even sell vegan cheeses, desserts, meats, and drinks as well. Everything looked delicious so it took me a bit to decide, and I ended up ordering the Jalapeño Business with a pickle to go and the sandwich was ready within 10 minutes. Jalapeño Business (4.5/5): Delicious! Good portion size. I love a saucy sandwich so the sriracha mayo was a great touch. The "steak" and "bacon" were flavorful. There were jalapeños, but for me personally, the sandwich could have been a little spicier, but I still really enjoyed the meal. I really appreciate vegan restaurants like Butchers Son. Even though the sandwich was a little expensive (~$19), it was amazing, high-quality, and vegan, so I definitely think it's worth and would come back!

This is my absolute favorite vegan spot in the entire bay area!! My go to is the temple Caesar salad! I've tried multiple of their dishes, but my favorite still comes out to be the salad. I also love to try their rotation of desserts here which is really good. Donut definitely taste vegan and a little bit more bread than usual but it is vegan so I get it. I also love getting the dressings like the ranch sauce, and Caesar dressing here. I usually come and order it to go and they make it pretty fast. I call in advance and pick it up. [[HIGHLIGHT]]They do have ample seating along with more seats available in the back patio area[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] parking is OK. Depends on when you come. I usually end up getting spots across the street or down the street.

Menu

This is my favorite spot for a delicious vegan brunch! [[HIGHLIGHT]]Super cute space with indoor and outdoor seating.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Everything on the menu is absolutely amazing, and the service is great. You'll need to order at the counter, and return to the counter to pick up your order. A few of my favs are: *My addiction (the name says it all) *macaroni salad These two will not disappoint! FYI brunch is only on Sundays!

The Butcher's Son is my plant based heaven. We have stopped in several times now & each time enjoy it more and more. This last time they knocked it out of the park with their Buffalo Ranch Fried Chicken sandwich & their garlic parmesan fries. I could eat this sandwich everyy dayyy. So delicious and fresh, favorite Berkeley stop! [[HIGHLIGHT]]Additionally great indoor and outdoor seating area & the staff are always kind and patient, which we appreciate[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] and this last time they treated us to a cheesecake, which was so sweet - the staff and the treat !

Ask the Community - The Butchers Son

Is catering available? looking to order for a going away party for a vegan friend.

Hi, you can email us at info@thebutchersveganson.com for our catering options

Are they open tomorrow (Easter Sunday)?

Yes, regular hours 10-4

Are there nut free options/modifications available?

Absolutely our front of house team has an allergen guide and can help you find the appropriate options when ordering.

What is their plant-based bacon made out of?

Soy, gluten & konjac. If you search BeLeaf Bacon that is what we use.

Do you have outdoor dining aNd heat lamps?

No heat lamps, but you can eat in the back area.

Are you reopen for indoor dining?

We are not, only outdoor dining which includes our back garden patio area

Are there a lot of gluten free options?

Jessica: Good afternoon! Great question? Call them an ask. Good Luck…

Why does your menu say meat (bacon & chicken) if it's vegan? I think it should be very clear that it is alternatives to meat on the menu. I'm sure the food is good, but the menu is not accurate.

It's all totally fake meat and it's all totally delicious! Be prepared for the long out the door line on weekends. The new location is really nice too- great outdoor seating in the back courtyard.

I visited on a Monday or Tuesday afternoon and the restaurant was open but the dining was partitioned off and the Register had a sign that said closed. Do they have a lunch to dinner down time, like some Asian restaurants do?

No they serve all day long

Which is the BEST vegan steak sandwich and why? :) (I'm between the Steak & Egg Hoagie, Jalapeño Biz and the Steak & Cheese?

Personally my is the Jalapeño Biz. The reason is the combination of flavors and the heat.

What is the meat they use made out of?

Depends. It could range from Seitan to Soy and Tofu.

Can customers use the rose garden behind it?

Absolutely. Make sure to either have your order number visit at your table outside or let the staff know.

How's the line like on Friday evenings (after 5:30pm)?

Crazy; but if you can find the sweet spot you can get in and out relatively quick.

Is this restaurant vegan?

Yes it is completely Vegan

Do they offer ketchup/other condiments? If so, what options?

Yes, they have all the needed condiments available to accentuate their entrées.

Are there any gluten free items beyond the pickle and ice cream? I don't see any on the menu.

There are plenty of gluten free options. If you click on the pictures and look at the menus you will see in red "gluten free option". I went with someone who has celiac and she had plenty of options.. I believe she got a pulled jackfruit sandwich. I…

Are the donuts, desserts, breads for sandwiches made in house?

I believe all except the donuts. They are from Vegan Gelato donuts in Oakland.

What kind of parking do you have?

Are the ingredients all organic?

No, they do have SOME organic items within the plates of food.

I'm confused, is this place strictly vegan or it has vegan options (in addition to non vegan food)?

100% Vegan

The only issue is there's no clear menu posted online, so we walked in completely blind. Their website shows a long list of flavors but not what they actually have that day, so it felt like a guessing game. The line moved really slow because there was only one employee handling everything. She was taking orders, giving samples, answering questions, and ringing people up all at once. She was super friendly and doing her best, but it felt like a lot for one person during a rush and the shop could definitely use more help. The space is really small and tight so it was hard to even see the flavors until we got close to the front. When we finally got up there, a lot of the tubs were already empty which was confusing since most ice cream shops restock. Some flavors I wanted weren't available anymore, and if they're out it would make more sense to just remove them from display. The dirty containers didn't make sense to display. I sampled the jasmine green tea and knew right away I wanted it. It was creamy with a smooth tea flavor that wasn't overpowering. I got a small with half jasmine green tea and half avocado. The avocado was surprisingly really good, super creamy and tasted like a fresh avocado smoothie. Both flavors weren't overly sweet which I liked. My husband wanted cookies and cream but it was sold out so he got chocolate chip instead, which was solid and creamy with good texture. Overall the ice cream itself was good, not the best I've had but definitely not bad. I like that the flavors lean more natural and not overly sweet. I could see myself coming back if I'm in the area, but the experience would be a lot better with faster service and more consistency with what's actually available.

The churro one was a standout, lightly dusted with sugar and cinnamon, just enough to give it flavor without being over-the-top sweet. The black sesame had a really nice nutty depth that came through well. The chocolate funnel cake flavor was okay, nothing particularly memorable, with the caramel one leaning a bit too sweet for my taste. Also tried the strawberry and mango matcha drinks. I liked all of their Kouign Amanns a lot, especially the strawberry one which added a nice fruit element! Their kouign amanns have very crispy layers and very flaky. I'd honestly recommend all 6 of the pastries we tried, especially since the prices for this place are lower (~$6) than some other high quality bakeries around the Oakland and SF area. The decor inside the bakery is really cute and there are quite a few small tables you can sit at to enjoy the baked goods. Service was nice and fast. The ambiance is wonderful - I absolutely love the deep blue color scheme, the cute matching mugs, and gorgeous plants. They have a lot of different pastry choices, but unfortunately, there was only one vegan option: a tiny hazelnut sweet bread. I ordered the bread along with an Americano. When I tried to take the pastry out of the package to share it with my girlfriend, it completely crumbled into a big mess. I went up to the counter to let them know, and the employee told me it was actually meant to be eaten straight from the package. She mentioned it was on the drier side being vegan, she took the crumbled mess and gave me a new one but it ended up having the exact same issue. It wasnt dry, but it just wouldn't hold any moisture and was far too crumbly to eat. For $5, this tiny pastry was a major letdown. To make the interaction weirder, she took the original crumbled bread back from me and I'm only assuming threw it away, which felt entirely unnecessary. Having been vegan for nine years, I've had some truly amazing, moist vegan baked goods, so this was incredibly disappointing. While the vibe and aesthetic are great, the vegan options were major letdown. CC accepted Restroom available
