The C Shop is one of those iconic Birch Bay legends that I've been visiting for so long, I can't even remember the first time I was there. It's a spring and summer must-stop for visitors, who come by the carload for a taste of locally-made ice cream or one of their many made-in-house candy treats. When my kids were little, we often camped at the nearby state park and rode our bikes here for some sweet goodness. Yesterday, my daughter and mom and I stopped in on a little Mother's Day trip to Blaine, and enjoyed some ice cream cones on their beautiful front porch. My daughter also bought some chocolate-covered confections to take home - and honestly, I'm regretting I didn't do the same. As far as candy and ice cream goes, their prices are definitely "tourist" level, but you do get what you pay for in terms of freshness, quality, and supporting a true Pacific Northwest family-friendly icon. read more

In a bright yellow house near the water is a candy shop stuck in the past. Walk along the veranda where there's a pew and small tables for patrons and walk inside to find saltwater taffy, sea foam, fudge, snow cones, ice cream, and more. My family opted for the ice cream and enjoyed every lick. I got sea foam, chocolate walnut fudge, and "Nutella crispy." The fudge and Nutella treat were average. Oh, the childhood memories of the C Shop! Dating back to the 60's for me and a mandatory go-to when at Birch Bay. Just spent 5 days there with extended family, and the 4th generation to do so. It's been a few years since we last visited here but so much is the same - delicious candy, ice cream, caramel corn and specialty in house-made yummies! They still sell the Seafoam and chocolate covered caramels my parents always bought. Our granddaughter loved the jelly beans and taffy. Open during the summer months only. Please note, they have seasonal hours. During the summer you'll see lines forming outside, but don't let that discourage you. There's a line for ice cream cones, and another for all other items they carry, such as: Homemade chocolates, cookies, peanut brittle, popcorn...and more! Others: jelly beans of all flavors, taffy, and other items I attempted to avoid looking at ha! We arrived an hour before closing, so we picked up the popcorn they had left (a little cheese and butter mixed together to make a medium). It was perfect for our outdoor movie while camping. Wish they offered to make more, but the customer service overall was pleasant. I can only imagine the long day the young gal had. They still had a line out the door for ice cream. Peanut Brittle - fresh, crunchy, and pretty good flavor. I personally enjoy more of a buttery flavored brittle (think See's candy), but this was the standard homemade brittle. The chocolate covered caramel rice crispy treat was OUTSTANDING! I was hesitant to purchase a rice crispy treat that cost around $5, knowing most aren't fresh or made with way too much marshmallow goo. However ....It was fresh, dense and chewy, with a creamy ganache covering. The caramel was mixed in with the marshmallow, so it was flavorful. I even ate it after freezing it due to the heat. My perfect crispy treat! I'm bummed I didn't purchase more. Oatmeal raisin cookie - delicious and full of cinnamon flavor. Chewy just how I love it! Added a little peanut butter and it was my dream cookie. I also ordered the white chocolate peanut butter cup that I'm looking forward to trying. I was too full from the crispy treat. Next time we will try their caramels and see what else they have available. Many of the shelves were bare - so it was likely we arrived after the huge weekend rush. Didn't get to try any of the delicious candy & treats while I was here, but I got to enjoy some of the delicious icecream! Yummy selection of flavors and options for a waffle cone for a great price. The place was busy with a line out the door, but we got helped fairly quickly. Fun, colorful store with a summer feel. Definitely stop here if you are in town. Highly priced low quality bulk treats repackaged in ziplock bags. I was severely underwhelmed. The shop was dirty and empty. Selection is poor. We tried the raspberry sticks, orange sticks, chocolate raspberry fudge, and raspberry truffles. All tasted like stuff you'd buy in huge boxes at restaurant depot. For the prices they were asking you would expect something delicious or at least decent. We also tried an ice cream cone despite the ice cream having hard layers of ice crystals over the top. It was extremely disgusting and freezer burnt as we expected. The texture was horrible, it was stretchy and foamy, like styrofoam gone bad, with hard, freezer-flavored ice crystals mixed throughout. And for $6 a scoop, again, I'd expect way better. This is a just a money making tourist trap. I can't understand the mounds of good reviews unless it is from nostalgia and loyalty. Coming from someday who went for the first time yesterday, are way better options in Bellingham. read more

Cute and cheery bright yellow candy shop in Birch Bay. We're visiting from Hawaii and on the way back from Vancouver, we stopped so our son who is an avid pressed penny collector could get his penny. Unfortunately it's wasn't working but the super nice people there got it working for us. Really appreciate them taking time out from selling candies to make an effort to fix it. Apart from pressed pennies, the main draw is the delicious assortment of homemade chocolates, popcorn, cookies and ice cream. There's some parking stalls right in front of the shop on the main road. We were staying in Birch Bay for a week. I went out for a walk one morning and by chance met the owners of the C Shop Candy Shop, Pat and Patricia. We had a nice chat. When Patricia told me they were the owners of the C Shop, she suggested we drop by the candy store. They were open that day. Of course we couldn't go to a candy shop without buying something. My favorites were the chocolate covered peanut brittle, the almond butter toffee, Dreams, and the peanut butter yumms. Pat and Patricia are very kind people. We even had the opportunity to meet their son, Keith, who makes a lot of the candies. He was nice as well. If we're ever in the area again, we would definitely stop by. read more

A cornucopia of tasty candy which has been hand-made with love for generations by one of the sweetest families you'll ever meet. If you go up to Canada, you're going through one of my home towns, Blaine. It's worth the slight detour to explore Birch Bay, which is the part of Blaine on the water. Make sure to treat yourself to visiting The C Shop, still run by the family of my (i think) 3rd grade teacher, Mr. Alesse. He was one of the best teachers I ever had; and really loved and understood kids. His field trips were THE BEST, and he made learning enjoyable. He frequently brought in candy for the entire class, which was like having Santa Wonka as an educator. I can't say enough about what a wonderful person he was. My family had just moved to Blaine, and Mr. A was so incredibly gracious & supportive to me during a fragile time. I'm still grateful for his kindness & encouragement several decades later. I think the C Shop was started by his lovely wife Pat as a way to support their family on a teaching income during holidays and school closures. The shop still supports local teenagers who staff the counters and kitchen in the Summer, and is still run by the family and their now adult children. They did so well that many years back they expanded into a cafe w delicious soups, pizza, sammiches, home-made ice cream, sweet rolls and other delectables in addition to the many shelves full of their tried & true hand-made confectionaries. That includes all types of chocolates, varieties of caramels, clustery & crispy treats, fudge, brittles, and a plethora of other candies. They also sell retail things like Turkish delights. I'm not sure if they've downsized a bit, but they are currently selling & taking online orders for the holidays. I encourage everyone traveling north to check out their website and see when you can stock up in person; but do be sure to support their limited mail order shop as well. Despite our indecision (how to choose from so many options), the staff here was super helpful and friendly. We came in planning to get some ice cream, but upon seeing all of the other yummy treats, we ended up leaving with much more. The ice cream was good too! During our stay in Birch Bay, we walked by this place almost daily before stopping by. It's not an easy place to pass due to its pleasant outside aroma of cinnamon rolls and vanilla cream. We finally caved and decided to get ice cream cones. They have a nice variety of candy and pastries, too, which I'm sure we'll be trying soon. The place was pretty busy, but it often is. The wait was pretty short for us, for ice cream at least. They don't give out samples, at least they weren't this particular day--I think that keeps things moving and prefer that. People can get pretty annoying with free ice cream samples even when a line is going out the door. (I mean, we're talking about a ten minute treat here, not a 30-year mortgage). I got a waffle cone of caramel pecan and my girlfriend got a sugar cone of rocky road. The sugar cone was not our favorite, but the waffle cone was flavorful and delicious. Both ice creams were delicious. Many of these little candy shops, the ice cream is on the ice-crystally side, which is not my favorite. This ice cream was creamier, even though it was a pretty hot day, which can make ice build up a challenge. I was not expecting that. Next time I want to try vanilla there because that's a good flavor for testing ice cream quality. As for our flavors, though, the mix was delicious. The amount of mix-ins (nuts, caramel, rocky road stuff) was far above average, which we really liked. The rocky road was bold and cocoa-ey. My girlfriend finished all but the cone, which she rarely does. I would rate the caramel pecan as one of the best I've had from an ice cream shop. The swirl of caramel and the amount of pecans pretty much hit the bliss point--you could not have more, it would be too rich; fewer would be lacking. As far as places you can enjoy a nice treat near the beach, I would highly recommend this place. If you've made it this far, I know what you're thinking: This guy really likes to hear himself talk. There are 2 lines. One for ice cream, one for other items. Once I got to the front of the ice cream line the cashier said let's just do one line now people! Everyone cut in front of me and I finally made it to the cashier after 10 minutes. I think they cater to loud pushy people, not a good place for quiet singles. Especially not older people. We love coming to this iconic yellow candy shop when we visit Birch Bay in the summer. We go to the camping resort close by and coming here for ice creams or sno cones has been a treat that our kids looked forward to through the years! They have A variety of items *Candy *Chocolates *Popcorn *Sno Cones *I've Creams And a full cafe where you can sit down for a meal on the other side of the building! In between the candy shop and the cafe you can watch them making the candies right in house. This is always a high light for the kids! If you are in the Birch Bay area after the middle of May stop in for a treat and the stroll down to the beach...just a block away! For a date or a family outing what a lovely way to send an afternoon or evening! They also have some outdoor seating if you already had your walk! The pizza is yummy, but expensive...$27 for a 16". The sandwiches with a little handful of chips are very small and expensive ($9), tastes ok though. The ice cream is good and the BEST DEAL there. We just arrived in Birch Bay and decided pizza sounded easy and good. The reviews for C Shop looked good. We were told a pizza would take an hour fifteen - a long time but we chalked it up to the busy holiday weekend. We arrived at the pizza ready time to learn they had given our pizza to someone else. They rushed another pizza but we had to wait another fifteen minutes. When we finally got it home the pizza was not very good. It was very dough. We were compensated 25% but that was not nearly enough. Overall not a very good experience. I tend to give second chances but since they will be closed after Labor Day, they are unlikely to get one. read more

Wow I have always loved this place however I do NOT recommended the restraunt side. We have been sitting here over half an hour and someone who came in behind us just walked out the door with the exact same pizza we ordered. We I went to the counter to check on our over $65 order I was met with rude and lies, I was advised the person who just walked out with the pizza ordered before us when I watched him walk through the door after we ordered! Then she rudely told me it takes 35 minutes for pizza (when we were told 25 when we ordered) they were working on it. I don't expect a restraunt to not make mistakes and/or be really busy slowing down service. However I do expect to not be met with attitude and lies when I politely check on our order. read more

Our family has been coming to the C shop since the 80's, and we all have our favorites.. The chocolate is just chocolate, but the caramel is made fresh on site and it is fantastic. It's my favorite! We stop in plenty of times during the summer, its about a half mile away and makes a perfect evening walk to get a snow cone or an ice cream cone for the kids. Closed in the winter (Because Birch Bay becomes somewhat of a ghost town) but we enjoy it to the fullest during the summer! read more

The ice cream is very good. I had lemon chiffon pie and thoroughly enjoyed it. The pizza is... ok but nothing to write home about. Similar to a frozen DiGiorno pizza with a tougher crust. As tourist fare goes it is fine but don't go out of your way for the pizza. That said, at least according to Yelp, there aren't a lot of better dinner options nearby. Ok also, they advertise great coffee and cinnamon rolls, but they don't open until 11am. What is up with that? It's such a nostalgic place. Of course the homemade chocolate and caramels are delectable. The caramel corn is a kid fave. I always liked the jelly belly selection as a kid as well as watching them make confectioners. The thing I've liked most as an adult is their expanded restaurant menu. The pizza is really good. You can't miss this cute little shop/cafe in Birch Bay with its bright yellow eye-catching building. I had stopped by earlier in the year for the first time to the candy shop that has lots of candies and Chocolates. We picked up a bag of taffy which I always loved to get when I went to the beach. But we finally got to try the cafe side of the shop recently for the opening weekend. They have sandwiches, pizzas and wraps lots of different choices. My parents really enjoyed there wrap and sandwich they got. I decided to order a pizza because if pizza is on the menu I'm gonna get it. I remember reading online that it would take awhile and the lady told me 15 mins. So after 20 mins we went and asked if it was done yet, they said just a few mins longer, but it still didn't come. I waited 45 mins, then asked them again. Apparently there computer shut down for a minute and lost my order. My parents had already eaten there entire meal. So they asked me if I still wanted the pizza because they had to remake it now since it got lost, I said I did because I had my heart set on pizza. So I finally got my pizza after patiently waiting almost an hour. It was very good pizza by the way. They were very apologetic and gracious about the whole situation and even gave me a coupon for a free pizza next time I come in, plus a bag with 3 large cookies for free. So thank you C-shop for that. No hard feelings we are all human and make mistakes sometimes. We go to Birch Bay at least once every summer and has become sort of a family tradition to go to CShop for candy before we leave. We must have been going there for 10 years now. I have to admit, I love going there as much as the kids do. There is nothing that beats the smell of caramel and other candy cooking as you walk up to the place. You can see the staff making the candy right there and this last time, the window was open and one of the women was holding court telling some fellow candy lovers exactly how to make the stuff. You go inside and the selection is awesome. They don't make everything there, and they are upfront about that. However they make a lot of the stuff and it's great. They have everything from chocolate, to jelly beans, to popcorn and ice cream. Really reminds you of an old fashioned candy shop. When you are in Birch Bay, drop by for some candy, you can't leave without a smile on your face. **This place is a restaurant and a candy shop. This is a review for the candy shop only. I'm sorry to confirm that the review my son reported yesterday was spot on. 1. The report of casing left on the pepperoni was accurate - I had to remove it from my pepperoni as well.....totally unacceptable!! 2. His " leftover" pizza was no older than 2 hours between when we ordered and left him our leftovers. 3. I half expect that our order was originally made as a cheese pizza then adapted to a pepperoni pizza as the cheese was abundant both over under and over the pepperoni. Please do not be deceived by friends and family of the C Shop as we have been loyal customers for the past several years.
