I would avoid this place if I were you. We all got drinks that tasted like dirty water, and the guacamole was completely bland and had absolutely no flavor. Although our waitress was kind, she was very slow and we had to ask multiple times for things before we got them. To top it off, there was a long black hair in the bottom of our salsa ( which was also very bland) and although they gave us a free round of dirty water drinks, this did not make up for the fact that everything else was horrific. We got our entrees and I would have personally rather have gone to taco bell where I would have somewhat enjoyed what I ate. We got 3 quesadillas and they were all practically empty. They had barley any meat, and wouldn't even hold together because of the lack of cheese. I also got an empanada and although it had more flavor then anything else at this place, after receiving a hair with my salsa, I was too repulsed to even eat it so I took a bite and fed the rest to a dog. Overall, I would never go back here. Me and all of my friends woke up with acid reflux the next day and one of my friends even threw up after eating here. I ordered the California chicken sandwich. The 2 tiny slices of avocado that were on the sandwich were brown. The chicken was small and way over cooked. I go there every Tuesday night for the taco specials. If you're into soft tacos, you will too. You can't beat $1-$3 per taco: freshly made, and great tasting. The friendly staff was great. Okay so gave them another try during peak season. Our waitress was nice and the food was edible. As before the fresh hot chips and salsa were great. I ordered the vegetable fajitas. The veggies seemed fresh and seasoned good, but my tortillas were cold. Black beans still taste as if they were heated straight from the can. The side of rice had a nice flavor (can't mess that up). This place is great! We come almost every weekend for their taco salad. They always have huge bottles of Cholula hot sauce on the tables (my fav) and everyone's always really nice. Sometimes they have really bad live music... which is the only thing I can complain about (since they take up a lot of table space) but I didn't take off any stars for that. I have a love-hate relationship with this place. First thing you have to realize is that this is a locals hangout in Long Beach. As is with most spots for locals in Long Beach, it is loud and laidback. Not only are the customers laidback, so is the staff. Majority of employees are teenagers from the neighborhood, so dont expect 5-star service. In fact, it's mediocre at best. So then, why FOUR stars you ask? 1) Some of the Strongest margaritas I have ever encountered. I actually call them Crack-a-ritas, because although I've never tried crack, I can imagine the experience is similar. If you order a pitcher, don't plan to accomplish anything afterwards except maybe sex and/or a nap. 2) Taco Tuesday. ONE DOLLAR each. Choice of chicken, beef, fish, pork. Choice of hard/soft. Let me reiterate. ONE DOLLAR each. Expect a wait. 3) Pretty solid menu. U-Haul Nachos are a messy feast. Scallops over spinach are delicious. Burritos, Fajitas, Flautas, Tostadas...all good. Steak was on point, so are the Jerk Chicken Tacos. 4) Nice beer selection. All the Mexican staples (Dos Equis, Sol, Modelo, Corona etc.) plus plenty of their American counterparts. Good for when you just can't afford to be in an alcohol-induced coma from the margaritas...Because you know, sometimes I have shit to do. Tamales are on the menu, but they NEVER have them, which is disappointing. Avoid the Mac&Cheese, I was expecting a fun Mexican twist on a classic dish, I got ziti on a plate with cheese sauce. Could've been so much more creative. On a side note, Speakeasy next door has awesome mac&cheese (actually the whole menu is awesome), as well as a really great beer selection. This is good to know for when Cabana is packed and you dont feel like waiting...but I digest. So I came here on a Saturday at 1:30pm with a coupon that reads "10% off entire check except taco Tuesdays, Saturday after 5pm, or Sunday brunch. Exp 9/4/14." I presented the coupon to the waitress who was new, but very sweet... She took it and the manager returned to say "Sorry, I can't honor this." When I asked why she said "Because Saturday brunch is something new we are doing, we can't take this." The drinks are still great (strong), but now the food is borderline terrible, as is the service. The wait staff seem to be composed almost entirely of 16-year-olds who have no idea what they're doing. They're rude, lazy and mess up orders like it's the thing to do. Came here for dinner last night since we were in the mood for Mexican, despite all the negative reviews. We were pleased with the outdoor seating area and liked that we were able to hear the live music from inside since the space is so open. It wasn't too crowded since we came on a Wednesday night, so the service was friendly and attentive. We started with guacamole and margaritas. While the guacamole wasn't made table side, you could tell it was freshly made and I loved that it wasn't too salty. The margarita was also good- strong and not too sweet. For dinner I had the beach burrito with chicken, which was huge but good. I do wish the burrito had last chicken and more of the beans with a bit more seasoning since it did lack a bit of flavor, but with some hot sauce and guacamole, it was a good dinner! read more

Three years ago I would've given this place 4 stars. Something's changed over the years. The service went down, the presentation of the meals went down, and the crowds got a whole lot louder. You might say that I'm just getting old, but I'm sure that when the majority of people in your restaurant are standing, doing shots, it's time to call yourself a bar. The food has gone the way of bar-food anyhow. We used to get fresh wraps, interesting sides and inventive sauces with our meals. Now the food is served cold and you can tell it was probably frozen up until you ordered it. The calamari was chewy and had no seasoning.Took a few bites to dip in the Marinara sauce and the shrimp was fried in Panko. When I bit into the shrimp, it tasted like the shrimp was fried in the same oil like last week. The taco was layered... crunchy taco, cheese, soft tortilla, shrimp, avocado and etc. The crunchy taco tasted burnt that I couldn't finish it. We were in Long Beach the other day and did not check Yelp first. We did not plan on eating but I was getting light headed. The restaurant itself was decorated in a cute way. But it was just copying any other beach destinations "Mexican" restaurants. The bathroom is near the kitchen and it is at least as dirty as a China town kitchen. Seeing the kitchen really scared me! It was that dirty! What was weird is that there was a small live band playing really loud and also the radio was playing really loud. The place is not big enough to have 2 competing music sources. It is just one small room. The waitress was actually pretty nice. My food was so bad that I took a few bites and pushed it away! Then it was so cold in the restaruant I was shivering and turning blue. The waitress asked if I was okay or too cold and I said yes I am too cold. (and I was dressed in layers) I think she told the manager. There were several teen boys who worked there as busbuys and kept asking over and over are you don't yet are you done yet? They kept trying to take our plates and I hardly ate anything I was done lightening fast. I think they were just bored. But worst of all was the food. It was not Mexican I think the cheese was Velveeta. The chips were stale and I think the pictures we took look better than it actually tasted. It was bland and flavorless! I can not imagine the standards of people in Long Beach because if they had standards this would not be in business. Sometimes it's nice coming to a place with outdoor seating. And sometimes you're reminded that you live in New York and summer thunderstorms are a common occurrence. It was a Friday night and the place was packed, inside and out. Since it took awhile for the waitress to bring our drinks and nachos, we decided to stay outside and share a large umbrella with two older men dinning on some godforsaken looking pasta. Perhaps they were drunk and didn't realize that pasta probably won't be that great at a place called The Cabana featuring "Taco Tuesdays." A night like that screams mediocre tex-mex food, and that's exactly what we were served. My girlfriend and I ordered a large plate of nachos for $11, something I thought to be outrageous considering that there was barely any chicken on the plate. Nevertheless, it could easily satisfy a table of three or four people, so would probably be worth it if you have a large group. The flauta, while okay, lacked any sort of kick. This paired with a tiny serving of lackluster rice and beans made for an underwhelming meal. Luckily, we had a coupon and the waitress was nice enough, although stretched rather thin due to the amount of tables she needed to cover. There are better places in Long Beach, but if you're looking for a crowded bar, slow staff and mediocre tex-mex, by all means go for it. read more

They need better sanitary practices, I witnessed a cook come out of the kitchen wearing his gloves go use the bathroom, come out of the bathroom still wearing his gloves, obviously he didn't wash his hands, go outside, then return to working in the kitchen without changing his gloves. This is one of my favorite restaurants/ bars in Long Beach. First off, the atmosphere is beautiful with it's ocean like walls, and the doors glued on as if your sitting in beachy hotel. I love the wall behind the bar with its bright stripes and the painted window looking onto a fake beautiful beach set. You have a choice, you can either sit inside or outside. It's a block away from the beach, so you can eat here after the beach. I'm a Long Beach local and love mexican food. The menu is pretty big, so there's lots to choose from. The guacomole here is out of this world. I like to think I'm a guacomole expert because I love it that much. They have great mixed drinks like Margarita's and Pina Coloda's. Crowd can get a bit loud so make sure you don't have a headache when you come here. Also, this is a very military friendly establishment owned by a firefighter. I'm not sure why this place hasn't gotten the best reviews. I really enjoyed the Cabana. My friend just moved to Long Beach and wanted to have all the girls over for a brunch. We found this place on Yelp and it is one of the only places that does bottomless brunch. The deal is one entree and UNLIMITED drinks from 12:00pm-3:00pm. So, if you come at noon, you have 3 hours. They are not cheap either, they come over right away and refill you often. The unlimited drinks are mimosas, bloody's, some domestic beers (coors light, bud light, miller light) and margaritas (any flavor). I mean it was awesome! The margaritas are strong but you do not taste them. I split the shrimp quesadilla with avocado and fish tacos with my friend. Both were delish. I would definitely recommend the shrimp and avocado quesadilla over the fish tacos, but again both were good. Fish tacos were grilled and not fried which I appreciate. Atmosphere is awesome. They played a basketball game that the boys wanted to watch so that was nice. Waitress was super helpful and again all around great experience. Total with tax tip and everything was $35...you CAN'T beat that. read more

Service/experience: Had 4 empty tables outside and wouldn't sit the 2 of us because they were 4-person tables. Said "restaurant policy", and only gave us one of them after I asked to speak to the manager. Food: Fish tacos were tasteless (even the spicy-mayo-looking substance inside didn't help) and the veggie tacos had more cheese than veggies. It was h-o-t out and we had spent a few hours bronzing ourselves by the water...without eating, so we brushed the sand off our legs and wandered up to cabana. I was worried, because of how crowded this place can get, but the inside wasn't busy at all - and we had the option of sitting inside or outside. We figure - hey, its nice out, lets try it out there (that turned out to be a mistake, cause we wound up getting hot and drunk, but that had nothing to do with Cabana, thats just cause we're slow). First thing I noticed was the waitress was enjoying lunch - from Cabana. Thats huge for me, if the staff won't eat the food, it sucks. and she was sitting outside (like I said, there were plenty of tables so she wasn't avoiding serving us or taking a table from anyone else), which just gave us easy access to her. once again, salsa and chips and the green sauce I want to drink. We each ordered a different type of taco, jerk chicken, I dont know what one chic got and the fish tacos (I can't help it, I love them). they come in a soft taco, with a layer of cheese, folded into a hard taco. Yummmmm...and they were perfect, again. My friend loved her jerk chicken, and I think the other taco was a shrimp avocado mess that was delicious. And the portion sizes were huge - two tacos, black beans, rice, salad; two or three drinks each for 3 girls...bill was less than 100 dollars. boom. read more
