GREAT PLACE. One of a kind. They have plants here no one else has. The owner is an older guy who has always been helpful when I tell him what I'm looking for. I don't bring my kids here because everything can poke them. Duh. The prices are appropriate for the quality, rareness, assortment of plants. My whale tongue agave I bought here has tripled in size in the last 8 months. The Yucca is beautiful too. I sometimes just go here and walk around and look at stuff. Pretty incredible place. The only reason I gave the cactus King 4 Stars rather than 5, is that I went in the middle of June and it was 120 and you could cook an egg on the concrete... it's a cactus store what do you expect, they like it hot. There's a little bit of sticker shocked on your first visit to this establishment because all the nice expensive cacti are up front and center and boy did they look nice!!!! you have to walk a little deeper back into the property in some of the less structurally sound looking buildings that they were storing their smaller and not as rare cacti, to find the novice species. They have them in all sizes and different species in multiple colors... The young man who helped me was very knowledgeable and took the time not to push anything on me and make sure I understood what I was getting myself into. I was very impressed with his knowledge and the way he carefully packed my selections for the ride home. This is definitely one of those places that can be a definite source of knowledge and tips To help one get off on the right foot. If you're into cacti or just thinking about getting into them, this is the place to go to get indoctrinated. Highly recommended and you can see some truly beautiful and yet somewhat strange cacti. I checked the hours & called before I drove to Aldine. Online said it was open on Christmas Eve when my friend & I arrived the place looked mighty deserted. We approached one guy he was standing by a shack on the phone. My friend & I waited patiently for the man to get off the phone. He never turned around to acknowledge our presence. He was very rude. After waiting for him to assist us we decided to walk away. We saw some other people on the other side of a gate we asked if they can help us find a specific type of cactus but no one bothered to come to us. So my friend & I just roamed this large, creepy, vacant creepshow. We didn't find what we were looking for instead we found lots of weird statues & sculptures like it was a dumping site. I came here looking for a Thanksgiving cactus but left with nothing. The prices were pretty outrageous, the plants looked diseased or dead, found the Christmas cactus but they weren't planted. Crazy. Cactus. Lady. That's what I've turned into. This place is a cactus paradise. When we pulled up, I could barely contain myself. They must have thousands of varieties. The prices, especially compared to NYC, are reasonable. There are about 400 options to choose from, so you'll be able to find just about any cactus your heart desires. But, this place is a little odd. Their art is very bizarre - like sculptures of chainsaws sawing off heads. It's part of the appeal, and I don't mind some weirdness from time to time. If you're in the Houston area and looking for ANY kind of cacti, don't hesitate to check this place out. If you're visiting Houston (like I do) they'll shake off the soil, wrap your cactus in newspaper, and you can carry-on in flight (ahem, me). Then, just repot at home! read more

The worst. Don't order anything from these bozos from their online or remote operations. Totally unresponsive when they mess up. Sent me garbage instead of the plants I ordered. They sent 5 puny unrooted cuttings packed in a large 18x18 box filled with packing peanuts. Not sure who is in charge there but obviously no quality control and basically none-too-smart. If I could give "0" I would. This is a picture of the Hoyas I received-unrooted cuttings that probably won't make it. I bought them as a surprise gift for my son and his girlfriend but would be embarrassed to give something like this as a gift in the condition received. The picture of the two together are a week after arrival. Once I received them, I texted pictures and asked for my money back. I received no response. When I called today regarding this, the owner who answered the phone was the rudest person I have ever had the displeasure of speaking with. Apparently the website says that they can ship cuttings which would be fine, if these were advertised as unrooted, dehydrated cuttings but they weren't. On top of this loophole, what is even more extremely poor business, is that they don't guarantee any of their shipped cactus, plants or succulents or offer returns or replacements. Ask yourselves if you want to do online business with a rude retailer who will take your money and ship out product with no guarantee or recourse. Guess this is why they take checks - so you can't dispute it on a credit card. There are plenty of other online nurseries who stand behind their merchandise and have wonderful customer service- do yourself a favor and frequent those instead! This is a truly amazing place to see in person. It's RIGHT off the highway and easy to miss. A truly stunning array of cacti and succulents. From tiny ones for $3 to ones that would require a crane. You will need to ask for service and when you do they will give it. CASH ONLY. We were there after the recent rain and freezing weather. Vast variety of cactus, Tall to short! Round to cylindrical shapes and all forms! I would say they need to add more "rare" or " unusual" species to their collection but still its a pretty good place for a bang for your buck! Saw some pretty big darn cacti ranging from Alluaudia's all the way thru huge mammillaria's and a couple of Ariocarpus for sale... Without us even asking, two guys wrapped up our cactus really well and loaded it in our truck, securing it for the ride home. Our cactus made it home safely because they did such a great job wrapping it up and putting it in place. The cactus we purchased was about 7 feet tall, and was $149. So many plants of all different sizes, from little babies for your nook, to big mamas for your landscaping. I opted for a small cactus and a succulent, costing me $7 for both. The place can be confusing when it comes to navigation at first, but you'll gradually find what you are looking for. As other reviewers have pointed out, the prices here are outstanding compared to other nurseries in town. All of the flora looks very well cared for and would make a great addition to a home. Make sure you come here with cash or check, credit cards are a no go with these folks. I found myself scrambling down to the ATM during my first visit. I ordered four 5 gallon ocotillos, which are hard to find locally in Dallas. I paid $240 plus shipping for what I expected to be bare root plants since I chose the 5 gallon instead of the 1 gallon option for my project. I received four individual branch cuttings, no roots in a package costs much less than the amount I paid for shipping. I imagine it will take 3-4 years for these cuttings to look the way I'd like in my project...if they thrive. One was dusted with root hormone and has grown leaves, the other 3 are in shaky condition. I can find ocotillo cuttings for $12 each on Etsy. Second, advertising a 5 gallon plant and shipping a piece of a 5 gallon plant is BS. There is a disclaimer that says some plants may be cuttings but that should be for the 1 gallon option in my opinion and not once was that communicated in the emails I received from them. Payment could be better, no credit or debit options, only check, money order, or e-check. I guess it's easier for them to not use credit so people can't dispute the charge. Update, all of the cuttings died. I bought ocotillos from another site online and they're thriving. Make sure you know what you're getting before buying online from this place! read more

Unbelievable variety of succulents--small, large and ginormous. Prices for the smaller ones aren't bad. There are some that are hundreds of dollars. Lots of interesting folk art, too. This is right off highway I-45 and you can easily miss it. It's worth the stop. The area may have seen better days, but the different kinds of cacti is amazing. We spent an hour there just browsing. DO NOT BUY FROM THIS STORE. I wish I had read online reviews first!! Online ordering is a complete scam. The owner made up excuses for not shipping plants out for 2 weeks (they ship out Thursday! he kept saying) before finally becoming completely abusive and hanging up on me when i tried to call. Only when my bank called him regarding the charge did he give THE BANK a tracking number. When I finally got them, I was mortified at what I had paid for!! 1 gallon plants were actually about 3 inches tall, including the root. They were all rotting and nothing like the online photos. He has tried to protect himself from all wrongdoing so the bank then can't reverse charges because of his "Merchant Terms". I read all the reviews- and I decided to give this place a try because I was on the hunt for beautiful agaves. And, well I found them! They have rows and rows of cactus succulents and agaves. Every kind just there and waiting to go to their new homes. Here's the thing, be ready to get what you pay for. A large agave succulent in a different nursery will run you a couple hundy. But, here you can walk away with one for a fraction of the cost. You will have to put up with some pretty terrible customer service, but oh well. Come here with a clear game plan of what you want, pay and be on your way. The guys working there did help me load up the big plants into the car, which was nice. Sky high prices, less than ideal specimens. I don't even think he wants to sell his collection based on the high prices. Nowadays, you can get cacti and succulents on eBay or Etsy shipped for much less. The plants are not well cared for, either. Many of them look stressed, and have browning tips. Cash only is an issue, too. I was looking at a yucca rostrata for about $350. They were small, losing leaves, and browning all over. I got a better looking one on Etsy for $180 shipped. Bigger and healthier, too. Golden barrels were $59 compared to $20 at my local big box store. I always stop by hoping things change but it's been this way for a few years now. read more

I drove from San Antonio to just go to the King and an Astros game. I had read the reviews and talked to the owner on the phone a few times. I am a cactoholic mind you so please keep that in mind. Perhaps ordering online is a different experience but going there in person and selecting what cacti you want is a great experience. Its like Disneyland for people who raise and love ornamental cactus. I left with the inside back of my pick up loaded then I headed to eat then park for the Astros game. I returned to S.A. afterwards and unloaded my new children to bed them down in a safe place for the rising sun. These babies have been through hurricane Harvey so I know they have taken a lot of pain. Now they are mine, all mine! I plan on heading back up for the playoffs and buying more from the King! This HORRIBLE business does not even deserve one star. They are just vile human beings who have no qualms ripping you off. PLEASE BEWARE of this horrible vendor. I purchased (5) 1-gallon plants from this vendor and I wish I could post a picture of what I actually received for the $60 I spent. What I received would NOT even fill a quart size plant offering, not even close. I was sure there just had to have been an honest mistake in the order fulfillment so I contacted Lyn Rathburn with a pleasant email explaining the situation. Well...I was met with someone who had absolutely NO interest in hearing my concern, addressing it, validating it, or making it right -- not even for one second was that entertained. Rather, she was impolite, crude, accusatory, angry, rude, and had NO interest whatsoever in helping me. She basically wrote "You got what you bought" -- as if that was supposed to make me feel better...? As if that's customer service? There is absolutely no way to return the order to her as she doesn't accept returns -and- if you try to object to the charge via your credit card, she will then charge you an additional $125 for that chargeback -- that's actually in her fine print. My credit card company said they've never, ever seen anything like what's in her fine print. I paid a LOT of money for 5 plants and what I got was literally almost nothing at all. I ordered online a total of about 1 dozen plants ranging from size in 4" pots, 6" and 1 gallon. Overall I would buy from here again but only for hard to find items. Pros: The plants were mostly healthy looking and undamaged by shipping. Cost was competitive for smaller plants Some of the plants I'd not seen at other online nurseries - or brick and mortar nurseries here in CA. Cons: Several of the plants were on the small side. The four inch pots themselves looked smaller than 4" pots I'd seen in the past. Shipping to CA is expensive ex. - my $80+ order cost $30+ to ship. Realistically I wouldn't order plants from TX unless there are varieties I can find closer to home. Shipping took a long time to start - e.g. just getting fedex to pick up the plants. Orders from 3 other online nurseries I made at the same time had already arrived before I even got a tracking notice from fedex. Minor point but plants came surrounded by a box full of polystyrene peanuts which I personally don't enjoy throwing in the trash. 1 substitution was made for a plant I was looking forward to receiving. 1 plant looked more like a cutting - no roots. read more

My wonderful boyfriend took me here as a surprise and as soon as I saw the place, I FREAKED out in happiness. So many healthy and gorgeous succulents of ALL shapes and sizes. This cactus "king" is a major let down. I came looking specifically for Eve's Needle. They had about 15 of them, but they were all trashed and missing vital parts of the plant. I couldn't find one that was pretty/healthy/all there. Most were falling over in their pots and were extremely shriveled. When I called to ask where to park, the person on the phone sounded very inconvenienced. The workers just stare at you as you shop... and most greenhouses have "do not enter" signs plastered. The walkways in the greenhouses are so small... and the ground was covered in tarps that were full of water. I'm sure you can read all of the other bad reviews and make your decision on this place. It's a definite no for me. :) read more

No way, don't spend/waste your money here. I ordered 3 succulents (snake plants) from here back in June. I grew up in Houston and went to this store in person many times as a kid with my Dad, so I thought, how great to continue to the tradition online? WRONG. Red Flag #1: the online payment didn't work, had to mail a check...Red Flag #2: 3 weeks after mailing a check (4 weeks after ordering) - still hadn't heard anything re. shipping and check hadn't been deposited. I called and texted for updates - no answers, multiple times. I text them to cancel the order, not ship anything, and to tear up the check because I asked my bank to stop payment. Surprise...once you tell them they aren't getting your money you magically get a shipping notice via email. So I decide to wait on canceling the check to see what arrives in the mail. Red Flag #4: The substituted one of the plants (I knew this would likely happen due to all the reviews here - WISH I HAD READ BEFORE ORDERING!), and the other 2 plants they sent were ROTTED. One plant was mushy and gooey at the root base (see pic - it's gross), and the other plant had a half rotten leaf attached at the base. For plants that only have 1-2 leaves when ordering that pretty much means my entire order was trash. Whatever you do don't order from them. DON'T ORDER FROM THEM. read more

If I could leave this place zero stars I would. We happened to have our 3 year old son with us and I put him on a cart while we were shopping. A guy on a gator spotted me and angrily said no babies. As I scrambled to park my cart which had no handle out of the way of his kabota, and gather my things , he persisted to shout at me another two times. There are no signs for kids not to ride on the carts so it was an innocent mistake. Any business especially when charging obscene amounts for plants should be capable of asking in a nice way and if it matters that much to them should have it notated somewhere. Debut and farewell. I should have heeded the warnings of other reviewers, but the affordable prices lured me in. The plants arrived packed in their pots, therefore buried in the soil, which is all right for some cacti, but not for the "hairy" delicate ones. I always expect some bruising, broken limbs, soil, and even bugs as part of a "normal" purchase". However this transaction was deceiving; plants advertised as Mammillaria Carmenae growing in a 4" pot resulted to be unrooted cuttings. The two Echinocereus Knippelianus, are anything but that - they look conspicuously Viereckii, and with the exception of an agave Victoria, everything else in this purchase was either damaged or not what I ordered. Larger plants may fair better, who knows. I do not endorse this establishment, an online shop that does not accept credit or debit card payments, these days, raises suspicion indeed, and I should have known better. read more
