I had an old camera that had film stuck in it. I brought it in for help in getting it removed. The young man was very helpful. He was careful not to expose the film as it was being removed. Other employees were also friendly and helpful with other customers. It appeared some customers are regulars as they know the staff by name. That's a good sign of a great business! I was left on hold and told I would receive a shipping label. Still no shipping label and I am still stuck with a defective $3,699 camera. Thought I'd give them another shot, just walked in looking for a used lens. Standing at the counter waiting for someone to help me. Asian guy looks at me, ignores me. A coworker literally shouts from across the store "hey are you helping someone?" He says "No" and they start chatting. I just walked out, screw this place. Logging on to Adorama to order the lens now. I've spent thousands of dollars here, yet the staff never, ever seem welcoming or overly helpful. It's like they have no local competition, so don't try to treat you as a valued customer. Most recently, I came in to purchase a Sony 16-35mm GM lens which costs around $2200 + tax. The Asian guy swiped my card, placed the receip on the counter and walked off. For a minute I thought he was going in the back to grab a bag, or something else that printed? But nope, he was done. No thank you, enjoy this awesome lens, nada. So....I tried to support local, but will now buy all my equipment online through B&H, Adorama, etc bc a) they have more competitive pricing and b) I usually avoid any sales tax and get free shipping to my door. I sold some used gear about a month ago, a Sony a5100 with a Sony FE 50mm lens. I was also willing to sell my sigma 35mm art lens as well. All three items he offered me $430 for everything. I asked why so little? He said because the Sigma lens currently had a rebate going on. So they were only willing to give $300 for the Sigma that I paid nearly $1000 for and hardly used. I kept my Sigma so that only left me with $130. For a camera I paid around $500. I parted with my a5100 and picked up a used a6000 priced at $449 and filter. But looking at the receipt, I can see that the $130 credit was not applied because it all still came out to nearly $600. I was also wondering why he (the British guy) was so adamant about giving me the voucher for a photography class (a $200 value). Maybe that's where it went? Anyway, I love the store and the staff is very knowledgeable. I really love the Canadian girl, she's super sweet. But definitely do not sell your used gear at this place, it says up to 75% of the retail, yeah. "Up to", but not too much. It's not worth it. You'll have much better luck on eBay. read more

A long review but well worth the read. ***DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME SELLING CAMERA EXCHANGE YOUR USED EQUIPMENT*** Yesterday me and my wife drove an hour and a half to trade in our (old--but like new) equipment. After reading what camera exchange offers on their website claiming that they are "paying 75% current retail value" for equipment. We brought in a Canon Rebel t6i and a Nikon d5200 with 4 different lenses. The lens value alone retailed over $1400-1500, not including the cameras. These cameras have hardly been used and are no doubt in the best condition I've personally seen for a used piece of equipment. Agree the guy does his inspection and checks everything out he goes to the back to check prices..he comes back and has the nerve to offer $430!! I'm staring at him confused thinking is this a joke? He has the same exact used canon camera body for sale right in front of me for $399. I question about their false advertisement of purchasing equipment for 75% of current retail value. All he could say is "UP TO 75%". He goes on to say that they go on Ebay and look up the cheapest sold listing and that's how they get their prices. So my camers that has maybe 2k shutter clicks deserves the same price tag as the camera on Ebay that has 50k shutter clicks?! So now the best part is...they find the CHEAPEST SOLD LISTING AND THEN OFFER YOU 75% OF THAT VALUEThis place is a joke. Do yourself a favor and take your stuff to a pawn shop before you ever consider selling it to Camera Exchange. I wouldn't send my worst enemy to this location. We originally went in to purchase another lens for her camera at Camera Exchange thinking we could get at least $800 for everything we were trading in ..especially since they claimed to pay 75% of retail. At this point id rather pay $150 more for the lens on amazon then support this establishment. I read reviews yesterday morning. I should have listened to the one star reviews. Do not ignore reviews. 9/10 times 5 star reviews are left by friends and family. Every now and then someone will leave pleased. But the majority of their reviews I'd call BS. They have a great selection of new and used cameras for sale. They also rent equipment (cameras and lenses) for the day, week or month. To the point... I spend quite a bit of money on my hobbies. This year alone ive spent in the 5 digits on cameras and lenses. NONE of them at Camera Exchange. That's not because I don't give them first crack at my money. I do. I try hard to support local business. That's rare nowadays with so much competition online. I go to C.E. regularly and am always blown away by how hard it is to GIVE them my money and business. Their staff is arrogant and sometimes rude. Just because i walk in in a T Shirt and jeans does not mean I am poor or an idiot. I have lots of money and knowledge of cameras and lenses. But somehow, and every time I am treated poorly. Just this weekend. I walked in to buy a Summilux 50mm lens. I was ready to buy even though the lens was not in fantastic condition, i simply wanted to buy it and not buy online. I asked them for a lens cover... something that should ALWAYS be included with an $800 lens sale, they gave me such a hard time. I told them I did not need a name brand lens cover... something cheap... just to protect my lens. No go! I can't believe they would turn down an $800 sale for a scuffed up lens BECAUSE a $5 lens cap was "Extra". Again... as i have done so many times, i left without buying. I guess they have profit dollars coming out of their ears! In this economy one would think that EVERY dollar, Every customer, Every sale is important. I guess not to this staff. I used to go to Camera Exchange when I was in school. The employees are very knowledgeable. If you have any questions about anything to do with photography or videography. Be warned though, this place isn't for someone just looking for a cute little camera. Most of the people that work here are professional photographers and hold the industry in very high standards. I've felt this turn into a bit snobby behavior but if you look past that the employees are really trying to teach you about what's best for you. I love going there to check out the new cameras. It's like I'm Wayne and each new Nikon that comes in are the Fender. Angels singing in my head. I really enjoy the store and the people are really helpful and are willing to teach you which is why sometimes it might take a while for someone to help you out. Just wait and you wont be sorry. They staff here were fun, nice, and handled other customers questions really well. They have a great selection for photographers at every level. I sold them some serious equipment and they paid just above what B&H offers and were LEGIT about it, I mean took serial numbers my ID and had contracts, this is a big deal, stolen equipment is too easily sold and these guys are doing their part for sure. Everyone I talked to there was seriously into photography which is a huge plus, try buying something at Best Buy and ask them a serious question or for a lens recommendation. TRY IT! By chance I stopped in at the Camera Exchange store off of San Pedro and I was so surprised. This store was small but had so much there. I found there staff to be helpful with my questions. And they gave me their recommendations as well as more budget-friendly options. I actually went back the following day with my camera and lenses in hand. I was looking at trading in one of my lenses that I don't get as much use out of. They gave me a quote which was lower than I expected and the guy helping me suggested I'd get just as much if not more if I looked at selling it on Craigslist or Amazon or similar sites. I really appreciated that advice and didn't hold it against them that they couldn't give me more. They also helped me pick out a new lens. He listened to what I needed out of the lens and suggested two different ones giving me the pros and cons in the short and long term to both of them. All in all, I was impressed by there service and inventory. Looking forward to many trips back as well as trying out some of the classes they have to offer. read more

Fair price to rent for the day $15 for a 50mm f1.4, and $25 for a speedlight flash. I explained to him that I knew little about digital cameras and was interested in upgrading from a Powershot Canon to a Canon Rebel.. so he showed me it, but didn't really explain in simple enough terms for humble me to understand. This is the only camera store in town where I trust that the employees really know their stuff. Also you get to handle the cameras as much as you want. You can rent equipment to test it out before purchasing. The guy that was attending to me was very helpful and patient. He was not trying to sell me a camera that i didn't need, but figure out which camera was right for me. Even thought I had done a lot of online research, I was having trouble choosing between a Canon and Nikon. He walked me through handling differences in the two cameras, and addressed my concerns about lens adaptability. He left me feeling like I actually knew the camera I was about to buy. I took the beginning studio lighting class there and found it very helpful and thorough. The teacher talked about a variety of lighting choices, how to set them up, and the pros and cons of each method. I have had one negative experience with a guy who was pretty grumpy about me returning something a month after purchasing it. read more

If you shoot film in San Antonio, and specifically medium format film, this is the place for you. They also provide lens and body rentals, and even have bino's and some lighting gear for rent as well. The staff knows their stuff and are helpful but not pushy. i actually was just passing through San Antonio on my way to central Mexico, and had ordered a mirrorless Samsung compact from them that was at a good price with rebate. They held it in stock for me until I arrived (about five days later), and they were good enough to throw in several free "goodies" (SD card, cleaning kit, etc.), even though they probably didn't have much of a profit margin. They struck me as very knowledgeable, and the store seemed like a great place to me, lots of interesting gear, kind of old school (in the best sense). He's good at communicating, in an organized way, what you need to know to take excellent pictures. He also shares how to get creative with your shots and exposures, and encourages students to experiment and practice for best results.
