We arrived to quite a bit of patrons ordering and seated outside - I crossed my fingers hoping what I planned to order was still available. The bakery itself is absolutely adorable, and I love that they have a shaded patio where you can relax. They even had the FIFA World Cup playing while I was there, which made the atmosphere even better. I ordered the chocolate croissant and a kouign-amann, and both were incredible. You can really tell everything is made fresh daily. The chocolate croissant had the perfect balance of being light and airy while still having that slightly doughy texture that I love. It wasn't overly flaky--it was the perfect in-between. The staff was so kind and welcoming, which made the experience even better. I highly recommend stopping by if you're in the area. This place is legit of quality, ambience, welcoming and lively! Love the bistro atmosphere. Lauren (Owner) and Matteo (Chef) really connected with the people sharing the story behind the establishment (40 years) so heartwarming. All of the bread, pastries and tapas variety (Spanish this time around) are so deliciously and thoughtfully crafted. Example: flatbreads can be tricky due to wet ingredients on top (veg and cheese) to make for a soggier and floppier bottom crust....But not the way they do it!!! The flatbread still had a crispy flakey bite to it and that's a big deal when texture is important to you. We were in Davis and decided to stop in and have an afternoon snack. We had an almond croissant, buttery, flavorful, and flaky and a chocolate babka. My husband enjoyed the babka but felt it wasn't chocolaty enough for his taste. We also bought a Sarmentine baguette which was crusty on the outside and soft on the inside, perfection. Their outdoor seating was nice and shady (even had room for our lovable Lab) and there was plenty of parking when we visited on a Friday afternoon. The staff was helpful and friendly. Came back today - told you! And did not disappoint again. Got the dark chocolate demi (mini) baguette and it hit the spot! Aesthetically very French and the taste was very European as it was a smooth subtle dark chocolate unlike some sweet ones you can encounter. Best part was that it was crunchy on the outside and very fluffy and soft on the inside. Almost like Dutch crunch I'd get for a sandwich without it hurting the roof of my mouth. The crunchy outside was not too hard either since harder shell can make the eating experience frustrating. The look of it was stunning and the inside was nice and airy like the Asian baos I usually go for due to the lightweight nature of the inside. I usually buy Upper Crust Baking's raisin challah bread from Sacramento's Sunday Certified Farmers Market because it's my fav challah bread. This time, their cinnamon babka caught my eye, so I thought to try it by bringing it home for the holidays. The kind vendor gave me helpful storage tips, when I asked how long this can keep in room temp, and tips for freezing if needed. I was so full from Christmas eve dinner, so I thought I would try just one piece of the babka for dessert. Nope! It's so scrumptious that I sliced and ate two more pieces! I will be buying this again next time and gifting this to friends and family! I love Upper Crust! I have been here a couple of times and they do not disappoint. Their pastries are to die for and the staff are kind. It's always clean and cozy inside. If you are looking to try their matcha, I think they are best at coffee and other creative drinks here--definitely recommend those. Their matcha was a miss for me (personally). I had the Orange Blossom Matcha and I didn't get any orange flavor, it was a pale green and tasted more milk forward with a hint of umami. on Wednesday this place does a pizza pop-up. They sell a limited number of pizzas, And once they're out, they're out. You have to pre-order your pizza for a specific time slot.I really enjoyed the seasoning on the fungi pizza. Some of the people we went with weren't huge mushroom fans and they still liked this pizza. It wasn't super sourdough forward, in my opinion. the inside and outside patio were super cute. They sell drinks, which was nice. the pepperoni looked really yummy, but it was finished before I got a sample. Devastating. the veggie was nice. Came here today to join the Wednesday pizza night. Having tried a few of their menu items last week, it was an easy choice for a family dinner night for my daughter's birthday. Great pizza, and great dessert! This bakery is special - you can taste the passion in their products. They've got a nice reward program as well, both online or a paper card. The menu is primarily desserts (tarts, pastry, cookies, cheesecake, and few others) and baked bread items from loaf/sliced breads, bagels, pretzels, to croissants. This is a cute little bakery. When I walked in there were four women sitting at a table knitting. All the other tables were full too. There were outside tables but it was too cold for that. The young man behind the counter was polite and answered my questions. He seemed the quiet sort so there were no extra words thrown into his answers. I ordered some chocolate croissants and lemon(ade?) cookies. The chocolate croissants were good. The croissant was buttery and flakey. The chocolate part was less ok but still good. The lemon cookies though were amazing. I would definitely come back for them and to try something else. We came late in the day so there might be a better selection earlier. Stopped by this cute shop in Davis for fresh bread! Both the croissant and the chocolate babka loaf were amazing. Look how airy the croissant is! All the times I've visited, wait times have always been long. Customer service could be better. The older gentleman is welcoming but some of the younger staff could use some training, especially one of the tall blond women. The last time I went I wanted to make a second order since I forgot something the first time; stood by the counter for what seemed like a long time. A few staff just stood around and didn't even acknowledge me. A simple "someone will be with you soon" suffices. Now onto the drinks and pastries. I love bread. But I really don't understand the hype of bread here. But their coffee? I've ordered their iced agua dulce latte and it's definitely worth putting up with the long wait times and inattentive staff. I've always loved Upper Crust Baking from farmers markets. Their apple turnover and apricot pastry are so delicious. Today I stopped by the bakery in Davis and absolutely love the cozy vibes. I got here a little late but I'm happy to see butter croissants still available. I got one and upon picking it up I already love that it is clean to the touch (not oily or crumbly). Pastries, bread, and pizza are delicious and sell out fast. Service today was mid, guy wasn't super friendly and didn't ask which pasión (spelling?) we wanted, so we got a random one. Iced tea was undrinkable, so over-steeped and bitter I should've gone back to get a refund. The music playing was weird af too, it sounded like some weird death meditation music. We just moved to Winters from Hawaii where we are spoiled with Japanese style baked pastries. UCB did not disappoint in Food, Service, or Ambiance. It's a very nice bakery with a home like atmosphere. The pastries were light and fluffy not to forget tasty as well. If the cost wasn't a little pricey I definitely would be back more often. I haven't been to the actual bakery in quite some time so my review is of the food not the actual physical bakery. My friend brought over bagels and bread while I was home recuperating. This shop is located next to the Davis Food Co-op in a small strip mall. The parking lot is fairly sized but could be crowded depending on the time of day. Service was nice, polite, patient, and helpful! American, Jewish, and French inspired pastries, breads, cakes, cookies, etc. Unfortunately, we were headed to a lunch party so we couldn't try all the delicious baked goods. We bought some Lemon Crinkle Cookies and some Chocolate Chip Peanut Butter Cookies. Though, when we opened the package, we were slightly disappointed that it read Oatmeal Cookies with bold print, "CHOCOLATE CHIP PEANUT BUTTER." They were harder than expected as I prefer a softer cookie. We really enjoyed the Lemon Crinkle Cookie. It was in the display case and individually sold. Wow, I'm so glad we tried this! the staff is so sweet and welcoming! i'm always happy to find a queer friendly shop, especially one that is focused on farm-to-table fresh food. there is plenty of seating and it has a very warm earthy honey vibe :) i got the savory scone of the week, which had cheddar cheese, jalapeño, corn, and red pepper in it. it was honestly one of the best scones i've had in a long time, not too dense and plenty moist - i also got the cold brew (with dulce as a sweetener/no milk) and was pleasantly surprised with how much i enjoyed it! i don't usually love cold brew without milks but it wasn't too sour and had a nice rounded taste. i'm glad i finally decided to come in, i will definitely be coming back! read more

I wanted to try their chocolate almond one but they said it's only offered on weekends-- bummer... but their regular chocolate croissants were SO GOOD... the chocolate has a dark & rich flavor and after warming it up for a couple seconds I was so glad I bought 2. I also got the chicken noodle soup and it's pretty good. I added a bit more seasoning to it tho because I like my soups pretty seasoned. I appreciate the effort, even though I won't be going back. ____________________________ ORIGINAL REVIEW (one star): I'm so disappointed. My daughter was visiting town for a wedding, and we went to Upper Crust Baking this morning (6/21/25) at 10:45 or so. It was my idea because I received a coupon in the mail for a free coffee with the purchase of a pastry and a free croissant with the purchase of any espresso drink (see their Instagram post). I figured she could use one coupon and I could use the other. She likes espresso drinks, and I like black coffee. The first employee helping us was very nice. We told her it would be two separate purchases. Unfortunately, the manager or shift supervisor came up and snapped at the employee and us saying we could only use one coupon per day. I said it was two transactions, and she was obviously very irritated. She gave up and let us make the purchases. I live less than a half a mile away from the bakery. I went in once a while ago when it was a smaller operation, and I buy their products at local stores. When I walked in today, I made comments about how nice it was getting. This could have been an opportunity for the bakery to gain a new customer, but they lost one instead. All that for a free coffee and croissant. And do you want to hear about the free coffee? The employee handed me a tiny paper cup (think Dixie or Starbucks pup cup) and pointed me to a big dispenser in the back. I did not expect that. We waited for my daughter's fancy espresso drink, watching the manager tell customers when their coffees were ready. When my daughter's drink was ready, the manager sat it on the counter and walked away. My daughter had to walk up and ask the other employee if it was her drink. It looks like I have not reviewed this place in sometime and it definitely needs some updating. IT'S STILL FREAKING AWESOME!! There have been some exciting new additions. First, they have recently remodeled, and now have a patio out front. This was the result of an unfortunate accident where a patron drove a car into the bakery. It took quite some time for them to recover and rebuild. So exciting! You can also get a delicious coffee or latte to go with your pastry. Pizza. YES. Pizza. Wednesday night is pizza night. If you get on their mailing list, you will get an email reminding you of the weekly specials. You order online and pick it up at the time of your choosing. They have some absolutely fantastic selections. Very unique! And it's the best pizza in town, hands-down. Why? The crust. The crust is absolutely perfect. Not doughy, not spongy, but instead, crisp and a teeny tiny bit charred-- perfection! (insert chefs kiss here!) As always, the baked goods are divine. A while back they had some ginger cookies that had me coming on a daily basis! If you need a cake for a special occasion, this is a great place to pick one up. Recently came here at about 1pm and they were sold out of almost everything but that is normal because it is thanksgiving and it was later in the day. The service was good they were very nice and help for everything. The baked goods that I tried were very good. I got the classic New York cheesecake, hot chocolate, and chocolate mousse. For everybody with nut allergies a lot of item contained almond flour and for people with gluten allergies there is about ten gluten free items.
