This place was long time on my list to try for Tiki cocktails in the Valley. I had recently been in West Hollywood and happened upon a tiki bar named Lucky Tiki where I talked to a fellow Tiki lover and he asked if I had been to Captain's Cabin in Phx. I told him it's on the list but I decided to go since it keeps getting pushed back. This bar is located adjacent to Hula's Tiki Restaurant which has yummy food and a standard tiki bar but nothing amazing. If you want legit tiki drinks hop next door under the red light. We met bartender Henry who will be the more present guy behind the bar, he said that Captain Dave is doing other projects. Henry was great, and we hoped to chat with the Captain himself, but maybe at a pop up event at another place. Our drinks were beautiful, delicious, and stiff. All the things I enjoy with the Tiki style of cocktails. We enjoyed our time at the bar with friends. Great little spot.

The Captain's Cabin was closed for over a month and recently reopened with a revamped menu and with Captain Alex Perez behind the bar. Alex knows his stuff and the majority of signature cocktails on the menu are his (spoiler alert: they're strong). He's a fun and energetic presence behind the bar and I'm glad to see the Cabin opened back up.

This is easily one of my favorite bars! The bartender has been working there since it opened and he provides the best service. He is so personable and makes the experience memorable! Phenomenal bartender. The bar is so neat and it truly feels like you are transported somewhere else. The drink menu is very large and there is something for everyone. I have never had a drink I don't love.

Kirin Mai tai Forgotten skipper Entrees: Fries small Really nice speakeasy the decoration is spot on and the bartender is so cool and nice my friend loves their cocktails and never has anything bad to say definitely check this place out they have quite a few things to snack on here as well and they all look great. The fries were pretty good too and crispy.

Nice intimate space well themed and the drinks have obviously been given some thought. Great tiki style bar next to Hula's. Sad the dark and stormy didn't have the original Rum but the Mai Tai and other drink I had were great. The wife enjoyed her adventure as well.

This is a very welcoming and cozy bar. Went here on a date. We sat at the bar. David is awesome and made my date a special drink using bourbon. He loved it! I had the Cobra's Fang and had to control myself from wanting to sip all at once. Delicious and satisfying tiki drink. My date then ordered an old fashioned cocktail and let me try it. This is the best old fashioned I have ever had. I wanna go back again just for that, the awesome bartender David, and to try more tiki drinks and enjoy the ambience of this cool establishment.

Such a cute little speakeasy/tiki bar! Dim lights and great decor. There is enough seating for maybe 20 people, and they don't take reservations. I imagine it may get a bit crowded on weekends. We went on a Thursday evening and there were just 2 seats left when we arrived. People came and went during the time we were there, so someone looking for seats could have just waited a bit and gotten one. Pretty extensive drink menu. The drinks are tasty, and the presentation is great. Captain Dave even made my mai tai prettier with a flower when I asked! Small bites are also available. Probably an unpopular opinion as people love AC around here, and maybe we were sitting right where the air was blowing, but the AC kept kicking in and I was cold. A relatively minor inconvenience, everything else was great!

Most people don't know about this place but it is amazing! It's a speakeasy next to Hula's in uptown. Captain David, the bartender, is so fun and makes fantastic drinks. It feels like you are on a pirate ship and has such a cool vibe. It's a great place for date night or just grabbing a casual drink

Fun speakeasy next to Hula's. Small space with limited seating so expect to wait or maybe be unable to come in. We were very lucky that we happened to come in when a group of 4 people left. The drinks were good and not too expensive especially for their size. I love their look and how fun all the drinks were, very good tasting and fun for pictures. The Captain/bartender was super friendly and attentive, he made it a point to connect with each guest and was talking to patrons. I liked the aesthetic of the place, very much a tiki bar with a ship theme which was fun. Similar menu to Hula's if not the exact same. The space was also a bit hot and felt a little stuffy but that can be expected from a small space. When we came in, it was our first time and since there is no hostess, only the captain, we felt a little awkward and unsure of what to do or if we should sit ourselves. That was probably the only bad part. They have seats at the bar and some booth areas as well. Probably no more than 15 people or so could fit in there comfortably so it's kind of nice to have the space that's intimate and unique. I would probably go back, but would get there early to avoid having to wait or being unable to get a spot!

Such a fun spot to hit up on a late night. My friend and I didn't expect to go out but when we did, she recommended we start here. We wanted Halloween vibes and it totally delivered, there was eerie red lighting, fake spiderwebs and skulls on the bar area plus a seasonal drink menu. The bartender, David, was very cool and kept it classy with his captain's hat. I had the Treacherous Waters, per David's recommendation, while my friend ordered Queen Anne's Revenge. Both were very tropical and delicious, my friends drink even had a little umbrella with a spiderweb on it for the 'gram. Overall this is a very low-key niche place to stop for a drink after visiting Hula's or eating at Denny's.

Captain David runs the ship alone which is mind-blowing. He takes your drink and food orders, makes the drinks, grabs your food from the kitchen, delivers it to you, cashes you out, and cleans the tables - alone. Captain does a great job managing everything, major props. Loved my Ava's Kingdom, has rum, amaro, coconut, strawberry, lime, pineapple, and cardamom. Extremely well-balanced. The Macadamia Chi Chi was also excellent and heavenly! Also, ordered the Fish Cake sliders, Coconut Shrimp Rolls, and Island Style Poke. Loved it all, but we enjoyed the Fish Cake sliders the most. In addition, my friend mentioned my birthday to the Captain at midnight, and he did a double-shot with me! What a champ. Running the ship alone, and doing the most. Major points. We will definitely be back to sail with him again!

What a gem! Was super nervous that the place was going to be crowded going around 9pm on a Friday night due to other reviews, but it turned out to be a pretty slow evening and was so excited about that. Captain Dave, the bartender, is fantastic and welcoming. Thoroughly enjoyed sitting at the bar and having conversation with him and he added a lot to the experience. Loved the theme decor and intimacy of the small place. Can't wait to go back!

Just keep an eye on how much you're spending! There's a lot of spots for improvement here, but I'd also say that Lylo is one of the few businesses I've ever seen do such a visually-great escape out from their pool area. If you're here for the escape and temper your expectations for food or drink, I think you'd have a good time. There are a TON of mosquitos here, so prepare accordingly. The bar and hotel lobby didn't have bug spray nor any for sale. The nearby liquor store does have some for sale at less than a block's walk. (The pool is hot mid Phoenix summer. The pool itself felt closer to a hot tub than a refreshingly cold pool. I'm told this is normal for pools in Arizona in the summer.) PROS: -All of the drinks are really pretty, visually, and with the pool, you have a great mecca for social media photos. -Despite the ridiculous 110+ Phoenix heat, we were relatively comfortable in the shaded restaurant area with the misters. We could still see the pool, but we weren't baking alive. -Pool bathrooms were clean enough. There were lots of puddles and toilet paper on the ground, but nothing was horrific or moldy like some pool bathrooms can be. Spacious stalls for changing too - though I didn't see any shower or changing areas. -The pool area itself is pretty! It makes for gorgeous Instagram photos, and Lylo knows that. There are lots of little spots (a camp sign, a chair off on its own, all the loungers, etc.) that make cute photo backdrops in addition to the pool itself. -There is a collection of inflatable pool toys in the corner that seem to be open for guest use. CONS: -Water bottles are not allowed at all - not even sealed disposable plastic ones from the grocery store. They'll store them for you, and you can fetch your own water with disposable plastic cups while you're here. -The misters in the pool area were broken. With the heat, we chose not to actually use the pool, and instead stayed in the restaurant, shaded area with misters. -All of the on-menu drinks are pretty sweet and not super boozy (at their price points). It's easy to go through quite a few at their higher price. Make sure that you're spending intentionally. -We weren't in love with the food we ordered. It felt like frozen food reheated and served to us. To be fair, that's about to be expected from a pool bar, but it was still something to note at the prices and with nearby restaurants walkable. -Service is there. I wouldn't say it was friendly or welcoming, but the servers checked in often in-between talking to people in swimsuits or joking with friends. I rarely waited for anything, but I didn't feel like a valued guest. -The fabric of the chaise loungers and lounge beds are stained. I saw some employees hauling off some of them and shoving them into the back of a fabric cleaning van, so I'd assume they rotate in and out and have to deal with a ton of spilled drinks.

You would think being outside they would have someone buss since there were bugs swarming everywhere. The Dole Whip drinks you would assume the alcohol would be mixed in but just poured on top. Service was honestly extremely disappointing usually I can give them some grace but this was just... wow! Then I go to pay and there were several items on my bill that were never ordered. Mind you never got silverware or napkins so we were using the towels. 25 minutes for a can of beer mind you. Place could have potential but would need several more servers and maybe individuals that are equipped to even do the job in the first place. $300 for actually a slap in the face and no sunburn because are seats were in the shade with dirty dishes damn near on top of us. Gross, waste of money, and just disturbing. Could not pay me to come back. In addition the pool looked so alarmed I was surprised individuals were even in it, I barely let my feet in. Update : I tried to contact the hotel yesterday to get in touch with the manager, was given 3 emails all wrong. The emails never got delivered. Call the Lylo Swim Club this morning and spoke with Paul Epstein.... oh my actual god good luck. So extremely rude not helpful at all no wonder on his LinkedIn he switches jobs every few months. Some things he told me on the phone.... 1. That the dishwasher/busser was going around every 20 minutes and grabbing dishes... Wrong I saw him once 2. Explained to him that the drinks tasted like they were poisoned. He said what do you expect when you order alcohol. 3. he asked why I didn't grab a server. There were two and I saw them maybe three times only when they were delivering wrong food. He then told me that they were overstaffed yesterday pathetic. On top of that he said everyone was going there to get the dole whip drinks because of TikTok. I'm glad other people could enjoy them, but you would think since he works in the restaurant industry he would have grace for others when its impossible to please everyone. That I understand but with all of these things that went wrong a discount should have been applied. I've never experienced someone so rude and uptight. I can't even imagine someone having a bachelorette party or a birthday there I would be embarrassed to have my friends or anyone I know being in contact with this place or Paul. good luck to him.

I arrived a bit before 6 to find it closed, no sign on the door and nothing online stating it had closed. So we headed downtown to the second location. I arrived about 6:10 pm and was asked if I had a reservation. I explained that we went to the other location only to find it closed and when we called the only number on the website to make a reservation (earlier in the day), no one answered the phone. We called multiple times. The guy at the door informed us the other location had closed and he couldn't seat us until 8 pm unless we wanted to sit at the bar. I asked to speak with a manager and was told there was no manager there. A restaurant should always have a manager or someone on site empowered to address customer concerns. We agreed to sit at the bar. First we ordered cocktails for $17 each. While they were tasty and refreshing, they had virtually no alcohol. I ordered the Kra Pow and, on the server's recommendation, chose the pork belly. My friend ordered the Pad Ki-Mao with pork belly. After waiting 30-45 minutes for the food, it finally arrived. Mine was dry pieces of pork belly, dry rice, an egg and three cucumber slices, no sauce whatsoever. When I asked for sauce, I was offered soy sauce and hot chili. My friend's noodles were tasty, but she also thought her pork belly was dry. The server, who was also the host and bartender didn't check in on us a single time during our meal. Between the outdated website, unanswered phone, lack of management and service, long wait and underwhelming food and drinks, the entire experience was extremely disappointing. I expected much more from this place.

My only negative is that they close at 12, but since it's slow they're opting to close earlier. Totally fine! I'm a server myself and I appreciate that! But I know others will be upset. Just call before you come if it's a late evening and not a Friday or Saturday.

I first came across Don Woods' Say When reading a Yelp article listing out the best rooftops in…read moreeach state. Don Woods was Arizona's pick. For quite a few months, I had it on my list to visit. I finally made things happen on a Wednesday evening for a drink. Located on the roof (of course) of a boutique hotel, I find free parking in the hotel's parking lot. While it was a busy parking lot, I was able to find a spot. Unfortunately, my night consisted of a comedy of errors. Ambiance (3/5): When you think best rooftop in the state, you're thinking scenic and peaceful views. Don Woods' certainly has that, though I've seen better in Phoenix. You can see the mountains in the background, but that's about it. The hotel is located on a busy street, where you'll often hear the noise of cars buzzing by or the train choo-chooing. Did I just make up a word?! I imagine the best time to stop by is during sunset. The outdoor area is relatively narrow with seating for about 20-30 people. It's a mix of comfortable seats and tables/chairs. There's also a charming indoor area, where the bar is located, but I felt like I had to sit outside. The weather was perfect, too. Service (2.5/5): This is where the comedy of errors began. I was given a menu and some water and was left to peruse the menu. Before the waitress had returned, I had picked out an appetizer and a cocktail. I then discovered that their cook had quit the other week and as a result, no food was available. That's fine and all, but you've gotta give me a heads-up when giving me the menu. That way, I wouldn't have spent the time to look over the food menu and get my heart set on a particular dish. On a better note, they have free WiFi. And service was overall friendly and pretty efficient. Food (N/A): While I was unable to order some food, on most nights, they have a small menu of small plates. More of a snack type of spot then a full meal type of establishment. Drinks (3/5): Don Woods is know for its cocktails and they have a list of 10 or so craft cocktails. Plus, beer, wine, and the typical options that you would find when there's a full bar. I feel like the bartender messed up the proportions on my cocktail as it was a bit rough. One drink and I was out. It seems like Don Woods' is experiencing some turnover which is leading to some mishaps. Combine that with some high expectations given the accolades they won, and it was the recipe for a disaster. I love a good rooftop bar, so I was hoping for more at Don Woods' Say When. Even the lobby of the hotel was experiencing issues. They sell popsicles in the lobby but the guy temporarily manning the front desk didn't know how to get their Square device working. Which ended up meaning no appetizers for me at Don Woods and no popsicles from the lobby. Two strikes. We live to fight another day.
