I moved to the area 4 years ago from Long Island the land of great seafood. I drove past the captains cap many times and it looked closed and not in business. The last time I past was a week ago and saw the parking lot refinished. There's life ! My neighbor and my wife went there tonight and must say it was a pleasant time, the food was great (I'm a seafood snob) . Be in this location, Denver nc I never thought I would ever enjoy another wonderful seafood dinner. I tried the captains special broiled , flounder , shrimp , oysters and scallops. This is the favorite seafood restaurant of a former neighbor when we lived in Cornelius across the lake. T%he3y moved to Trilogy about 3 years ago and we follow last July. The restaurant has been open for 30 years now and I vagally remember dining here on one or two occasions and with Covid for the past year and a half, Susan has ordered to-go for dinners for both us and occasionally for our former neighbor who loved this place so much. Over the past year, we have dined at Westlake Family Restaurant right access the the street and have commented on more than one occasion that we needed to go there for dinner. After a long day in the lab, I called Susan from the office and suggested that in the heat, we just go out and grab something where it was cool and we did not have to cook something and heat up the kitchen. I suggest one place and Susan countered with The Captain's Cap since I had said I wanted to come here on more than just a few occasions. Picked Susan up a few minutes after 6pm and were there by 6:15. Pulled into the parking lot and someone was leaving so scores a spot right in front of the entrance. Walked in and were promptly greeted by a gentleman who escorted us to our table. Promptly follows by our server who brought menu's, utensils and took our beverage order. Service was excellent during out entire dining experience. Decor reminded me of some of the Greek Restaurants we had been to in Tarpon Springs Florida with the Sponge Fleet. There is a mural of a Captain piloting a trawler and if you look close, one of the flags flown is the Green National Flag. Susan had hoped to be get the Salad Bar Buffet but with Covid, that was closed and I have no idea if they are ever going to bring it back. Too bad because I have vague memories of a political dinner here a long time ago and remember that the salad bar was very good. Susan ordered the Scallops and had a choice of grilled or fried. She opted for the Grilled but it also came with a Salad which turned out to be a very nice House Salad with Choice of Dressing and she asked for the Blue Cheese Dressing. Her comments about the Dressing is that this is like the Blue Cheese Dressing her Mother used to make. Nice and chunky with plenty of Blue Cheese. She also could have had Cole Slaw since in came with the dinner but she passed on it. I ordered the Large Oyster Platter with Onion Rings. Also came with a Salad, and I chose Italian , Hushpuppies and Cole Slaw as well. Normally pass on the Cole Slaw but they offered a Vinegar Dressing as opposed to the Mayonnaise and it was very good. Cabbage was still nice and crispy and not slimy with excess Mayo extracting moisture from the Cabbage. The Italian Dressing was excellent with a nice balance to it. For the entrée. the Oysters were nice and plum and very tasty. Had a choice of Cocktail Sauce or Tartar Sauce and I prefer the Cocktail Sauce. Disappointed in the Cocktail Sauce. Very thin and no bite to it. Onion Rings were nice and large but very oily and soggy and would not order again. Hushpuppies were great and they lived up to their name. Supposedly, in the 1800's hunters at their campsite would fry these little morsels up and throw them to their hunting dawgs to keep them quite and when they threw them, the added the admonition "Hushpuppy" We tried this on a Pembroke Welsh Corgi and guess what? CC @ DENVER of the EAST I've been a CC customer for over 2 decades and they need to look into this store. The waitstaff are awesome. The food is delicious. But between the "manager" and the cooks, I would never visit this location again. When you take a fresh plate and put fresh seafood on it and my kid gets a metal scrubby piece in there that tells me someone is either blind, ignorant or should not be in a kitchen. The manager is too good to visit you even with a foreign object in the food. Make sure you hold onto the foreign object as it seems they almost train their staff to grab it. But as I waited for the manager to come out with the piece of scrubby in my hand they did not have the GUTS to come out and deal with it! What a pos! Pretty much had to explain that this ruined our appetites as well as trust! I believe they were trying to just comp my plate, but no they comped the whole thing and I told them to give the food to the homeless. This use to be our go to Saturday restaurant. I eat seafood and my husband likes steak. We ordered the small tips with baked potato. Flounder and calabash with fries. The hushpuppies were terrible. Inconsistent sizes?? Some were raw. If I wanted Mc Donald fries I would have went there. No more steak fries? Very disappointed in the food for the price I had to pay. read more

To those who wrote bad reviews they don't understand what a fish camp is and I bet they aren't from the South. My wife and I ate there last night. Usually the food is pretty good. I had the any two combination. I ordered calabash shrimp and Jumbo shrimp. The Jumbo were more like medium shrimp and the calabash wasn't much more the crumbs. And although I got both salt and pepper. They really wasn't good at all. As I said before we have been there multiple times and some times there really good. And some times not so good. But never as bad as last night. When we got there they weren't busy at all. Only two cars in the parking lot. That should have told me something. I won't be in a hurry to go back. read more

I was craving a good fish dinner and had even suggested the Cap as the dining choice for the night. I was excited all day, enough so to hold off on lunch before. Upon arrival I fully expected a bowl of hushpuppies. Had to ask the waitress several times then another before we received them. There were 5 people in our group, there was enough for 2 each. Had to request more. Then our order came out. I ordered a combo and upgraded 2.50 to get white fish over flounder. Normally one would expect an upgrade like that to come with more than 2 pieces of fish...like the flounder normally does...and these were 2 sad pieces of fish might I say. The calabash shrimp...the size of a pea. Either way I was starving and dug in. I love cocktail and tarter sauce! I proceeded to squeeze out what appeared to be something the consistency of ranch and the cocktail was thin and no chunks of ingredients. Horrible! A disgrace to the sauces. We struggled with the waitress the entire outing having to request everything rather than her doing her job and being on top of her service. Honestly I will not go back. For the money and quality of food I can get a much better plate of fish at Showmars. Appears this establishment is surviving solely on the elderly close by that don't want to venture away to find something better. I'd suggest thinking twice before choosing this restaurant. Never ever eat here! Seriously, this eaten piece of fish was in my husbands takeout box. This was reported to the manager and the owner and the owner said it's "soft fish". So today when I called in my order, I told the young lady about the order, wasn't upset, I realize things happen, she was very nice, said she would speak to "them" about my order last week, whoever "them" is! So anyway, I get home with tonight's order, a combo fillet flounder/perch order, I have 2pcs flounder/3small pcs perch.......! Really!!!!!! Never going back. There is a weird feeling vib in this place. This is a bit lengthy but true. Take a moment and read before going. As a Denver, NC resident we tried this restaurant approx. 5.5 years ago. Our order came to us smelling of very spoiled food and very "brown gooey looking" even after being cooked. Disgusting actually. The waitress told us , "Oh it was allowed to thawed by a part timer not putting it in the freezer that's all". She offered no reorder, nothing, which would not have been eaten. I told the waitress we aren't eating nor paying and we left. So on 6/04/2021 thinking the restaurant can only have since improved we went back, 5:15 pm. We had to wait 15 minutes to be seated and there hardly anyone in the restaurant and the parking lot wasn't even half capacity. I asked why the wait and the waiter said we've been busy. Busy?? Shouldn't you just NOW start being busy? Friday evening 5:30 pm by now and families eating together? We ordered ocean perch and onion rings and the wife ordered a seafood combo. The catfish on the combo honestly smelled like a fishing farm pond. They were overcooked and mushy at the same time. HOW? We both tried her salt and pepper catfish. The taste was horrendous somewhat like the farm pond smell it was emitting. The perch was extremely overcooked to the point of being crispy like a potato chip or rubbery. I only ate a half a fillet. No flavor. I tried tearing apart another couple fillets. The onion rings were such an oily mess and overcooked. The batter was undercooked on some onion rings. Then there was black in cooked battering. Peeling off the batter there was black something and mushy like rotten onion underneath. They smelled awful. I must qualify that I did grow up eating real fresh unfrozen seafood. This restaurant have served us rotten food twice. By all means go but we've been served spoiled food there twice and the staff while friendly seem very evasive....Enjoy read more

Enjoyed this restuarant the first couple of times I went with my family but the last two times my sister came down with food poisoning and the next time we tried it one more time my mom got sick so unfortunately we will not be going back. Get your barf bucket ready. This is Long John Silvers with servers. It's deep fried fish, hush puppies, lots of grease and salt, very little flavor. If your favorite food is popcorn shrimp, you might like this place. The salad bar was very disappointing, Iceberg lettuce and not much to choose from, and they have those mini cheap croutons. The parking lot always seems packed between 530 and 7 o'clock so we had to give this place a try. I was so excited to take my family to try this seafood restaurant. That was very short-lived as almost everything seem to be fried! The salad bar was very plain and typical. Where in the world is the alcohol because I truly needed some!!!! Well the answer is we don't serve alcohol because were a family restaurant. Well it seems more like it was a retirement community restaurant because almost everybody in there had to be on Social Security. I will say that my son did enjoy his meal because he got crab legs. He said they were very good but my steak was absolutely thin, overcooked and tasted like it came out oven institutionalize kitchen. Yuk.. I paid 2.25 extra on pick 2 seafood for some kind of fried scallops that were watery and some sliced in half.. Overall horrible meal.. Will never come here again.. 1 star because I had to select a star.. I guess that 1 star will be for the iced tea, hard to screw that up. read more

My favorite seafood restaurant in NC. The seafood is always consistent and always very good and fresh. I like to get the all you can eat shrimp. You get one trip to the salad bar that is included when you order an entree off the menu. The decor isn't that fancy but has a rustic charm. They have another location in Belmont that I've been to many times and I think another in Gastonia that I haven't. Check them out! read more

I'm a southern girl. I've eaten at traditional fish camps my entire life. I know they can be greasy and they usually serve everything fried. Tonight we decided to try this place. The good - fried shrimp, coleslaw, oysters, and scallops. The bad - hush puppies had no flavor except grease, flounder was over cooked and greasy, salad bar had too few options and lettuce was brown, and the deviled crab was bland. Our server was good. The bathroom was dingy and was HOT. The wall behind us had some kind of dried red sauce on it. The entire restaurant really needs a thorough cleaning. This was my first time eating there. I've only ever really ate Seafood from Captain's Galley. I have to say the portion size was extremely small and it was overpriced. I ordered the popcorn shrimp and the two sides were way bigger than the actual entree. It cost me almost $10 and there was hardly any popcorn shrimp in there. I was afraid the fried foods would be greasy, but they weren't at all. I had the fried large jumbo shrimp - the shrimp was very fresh and the batter light and NOT greasy. This restaurant is cheap. The portions are small compared to other area seafood restaurants. The wait staff seems to have a fear of management. This was observed on more than one occasion. Unfortunately, I've been taken there to eat when the decision was not mine. Once, with a party of 15, my 14 year old nephew was not allowed to order a child's plate because "he is too old and they will catch that at the register", the waitress said. My nephew simply wasn't very hungry (he had never been there before, so he didn't know the plates were already small). Go here for the scallops - that is what they do best. Salt and pepper fried scallops are so good! The salad bar is ok and a nice addition to your meal and the onion rings and cole slaw (seafood restaurant staples) are pretty good, but again, the scallops are the reason to go here! Was very unhappy overall. The salad bar was fresh and cold but very limited to items offered. Our server was very attentive to our needs. We were a party of eight so we had everything from hamburger steak to fish, oysters and shrimp. Everything was so greasy and fried to a hard crisp and didn't have much taste at all. Captains Cap is just okay. The waitresses are fantastic and support personnel as well, but the food is just not that good. There are better seafood restaurants if you're willing to drive a little further. The flounder is thin and tasteless; the shrimp is greasy and the sides are fairly bland. Pricing is moderate and affordable. They are always busy though and of that I'm not quite sure why. The service is always phenomenal. If you are in Denver and can't or won't drive to Mooresville or Huntersville and want fish, then it will do, but that's about it. read more

Having recently moved to the area, we've only been once, with local friends. We had the advantage of their recommendations -- fried oysters, broiled scallops, crab legs. All were very good. The salad bar wasn't anything special, and I can't see why anyone would go here to have steak, but we really enjoyed our dinner. (For the record, we moved here from northern Virginia, and before that New England, so we do have considerable experience with seafood.
