Great rustic Fish Camp! I had the small seafood platter and it was almost more than I could finish. Nicely done fried flounder, mini crab cake and stuffed clam. The baby shrimp was a good option and very tasty. The sour (vinegar) slaw was a great way to cut through the fried fish. My wife had the perch dinner and she really liked it. Came with small balls of hush puppies that we enjoyed the next day. Good prices for the portions and great service. Will go back soon. 74 years and counting for a unique place. read more

Finally got a chance to try this place and it is OK but nothing spectacular. Starting back in the early 2000's, I volunteered at the Catawba Correctional Facility with inmates who were getting ready to be released after serving their time or parole. Transitioning back into society can be a big challenge for these guys. I lived in Cornelius and as a consequence' drove by once a week on the way home. Parking lot was always crowded which is a good sign. Since we moved to Denver almost two years ago, I made it a point of putting this place on my "to do" or bucket list. A bit of a problem because the yelp listing showed that they were open for lunch on most days. Not the case. They are no longer open for lunch and they indicated that had asked Yelp to correct this. They said they did not have the password for the account which makes little since. I went onto my account and went to their listing and made the corrections and in the comment section, asked yelp to give them a call and verify. Two days later it was changed. Went up tonight for dinner (15 minutes away) and it was good but what I had was not great. Very dry and not flaky but at least it was not oily. Onion Rings and Fried Okra were very good. Smallest Hushpuppy's I've ever seen but Watson the Corgi loves them. Heavy accent on pine in the interior and reminds me of the Fish Camps that used to be along the Catawba West and South of Charlotte back in the early 1970"s. Service is pretty good but the server was overwhelmed even with just a few customers present. From what I could see, they have a very good take out business which accounts for the overload. Got there early at 4pm so it was not the peak of rush hour and she did indicate that someone else was set to come in later to help. Very extensive menu and maybe I just need to try something else. We had been longing for their hushpuppies and tartar sauce so my sister and I went for supper. The waitress took our order and referred to me as "sir" not once but twice during the brief interaction. I chose to ignore it. About 30 minutes in a big party comes in where we were sitting and began ordering. One hour into waiting for our food the waitress comes and says she's gonna go check on our order then comes back to the table and ask us to repeat our order. Never explaining whether the ticket got misplaced or what was taking so long. Almost an hour and a half after we ordered, the big party began receiving their food. Needless to say we left at that point. Never did the waitress offer us any refills of hush puppies nor tea during that ridiculous wait time. For those of you who aren't old enough to remember what a "fish camp" is, this is it! 3rd generation of family ownership. Scratch-made tartar sauce, onion rings slaw and hush puppies. Catfish fillet meal is strips, not a full slab. Still delicious; not greasy, and batter was not over-salty. Service was a slow for the size crowd. Server was managing 4 tables with total of 7 people. Never refilled my drink. Was offered more hush puppies, but they never arrived. Also got the wrong slaw: ordered sweet and received sour. My family and I chose this restaurant for my 71st birthday meal this evening. Over the past 50 years or so, I had driven past this restaurant on the way to college and elsewhere. I had always wondered what the food was like. Tonight I found out; it is GOOD. My wife called ahead to tell them a party of eleven including four young children were coming and said the person on the other end of the phone seemed genuinely glad to hear it. They had our table ready and waiting when we arrived. Not sure what some of the other customers experienced, but there were no problems tonight. Tina was our waitress, the only one working tonight. Yet, she was so cheerful and accommodating. We enjoyed appetizers and beer and wine. Then, the food arrived in copious amounts and well-prepared. We enjoyed flounder, shrimp, oysters, baked potatoes, hushpuppies, salads and sour slaw, that is vinegar based rather than sweet as in mayonnaise slaw. The kids had fish and fries and grilled cheese and fries. As the meal came to a close, my daughter-in-law cut the pan devil's food cake iced with stovetop cooked icing. The restaurant cheerfully provided extra plates and a knife and spatula to cut and serve the cake after I blew out the nine candles on the first try. We had a great evening and enjoyed speaking with the owner who checked us out. We were the last customers of the evening and everything was really great. I'll be back. read more

I celebrated my 50th birthday last night at Jones Fish Camp and it was delicious! As a child, my family went to Jones every week. The food was always yummy! As I got older, times changed and businesses closed. My family drove over an hour to eat there and we were not disappointed! The flounder was big portions, hot and crispy. The tartar sauce and sour slaw was everything I remembered as a child! I will definitely be going back soon! Their nostalgia of the original fish camp with the check out counter stocked with the old school candies brought back so many great memories of good food, family, friends and fellowship. read more

This place had been on my radar for quite some time. I always bustled by admiring it as I commuted from Hickory to Charlotte quite often. Every time, saying, someday I am going to try this place. Well today was finally the day! I actually drove from Newton to Jones Fish Camp with that direct intention. Upon entering it looked as I anticipated. That picturesq fish camp look from back in the day when they first blossomed in the piedmont. Wooden booths nestled along the walls of piney hardwoods with fish decor stapled in commonality. I grew up in the Gaston County era where fish camps were some of the best eating you could find AND very popular! One local restaurant set the bar high for all the rest. With that being said, I am no professional here but have been eating from fish camps for forty five years! I have a love and appreciation for Shrimp, Tarter Sauce and Hush Puppies - but not necessarily in that particular order. So with that being said, I am judging this restaurant on my likes and my standards from how I have eaten at Fish Camps all my life. My husband and I arrived before the dinner rush. We were the only table in there when seated. Our waitress WAS very accommodating and very helpful with the menu. But things went from great to bad to ugggh. She forgot several things when the food was ordered. I had to get up and find her to get these or else my food would get cold. As she got busy she never came back to our table to bring a request of my husbands, let alone extra napkins, to-go trays etc. A good waitress should be able to handle a few tables! So here are the notables...Iced Tea. I drink unsweetend and it was perfect! They have that really good crunchy ice that you enjoy munching on! Sweet Potato - the best thing that was served, hands down! Cooked just the way you like it. Really soft and juicy. Hush Puppies - small round moist and brown. Yes they were good but I was missing that creamy cold flavor ripping tarter sauce that I have grown to love (from the gem fixture of a Fish Camp in Gaston County). Here are the lacking and not-so-good items...Tarter Sauce. It was terrible in my opinion. However the opposite of my favorite it was too much crunchy and not enough creamy (mayonnaise). Waitress said most locals add mayo themselves at the table. NOPE, that didn't work either. Just not my style. Baby Shrimp. Too much breading!!! With anything that you put breading on...you do not want the breading to overrule the item. I could not taste the shrimp flavor for the taste of breading. NEVER do I not eat my weight in shrimp when eating seafood, except this time! I asked for melted Garlic Butter to accompany my "peel and eat" shrimp that I ordered to go along with the Baby Shrimp. It tasted as if the kitchen added the garlic powder to it yet forgot to stir it up or allow the garlic powder to melt. With every dip I tasted the gritty powdery substance. So I then opted for just plain melted butter (which I never got). Corn-on-the-cob tasted as if it had been housed in the aluminum foil for several hours. Otherwise, if it would have been fresh it would have been pretty good. So, I had to draw this visit to a close. I was not getting my melted butter and felt that nothing could really be salvaged at this point. I carried (in the hush puppy container) my left over Baby Shrimp (which I was going to feed to the critters in the woods) and the rest of my Peel and Eat shrimp up to the register. Again, stood there for quite some time before our waitress cashed us out. As we were leaving, the Pond Ducks and neighborhood cat greeted us. I smiled and gladly gifted the kitty my Shrimp leftovers. I am sure the locals will continue to find things to rave about here so the business will not take to heart some of things that need improving: Tarter Sauce, Tarter Sauce and Tarter Sauce! Also it would help to have a Cashier to check people out so that the Wait staff may assist the customers much better. We have frequented this restaurant for well over 20 years. We had heard lately that it has been falling off in quality. We have not been here for months but decided to give it a try tonight. MISTAKE!! We were told to seat ourselves which we did, and waited and waited. Staff were rolling napkins around utensils, sweeping, talking to served guest but not greeting or waiting on new customers. Of course, it was only an hour to closing so what should I expect. After waiting over 10 minutes and seeing other guest looking around I decided enough. I'll start with the positives. The catfish and clam strips were very good. Unfortunately that's all that was good. The wait staff are not attentive. We felt ignored for most of our visit. The scallops were burned. The shrimp cocktail was like no shrimp cocktail I have ever seen or tasted. They were not deveined, they were tiny and served in a cardboard tray. Not good! Food: This is an old school Fish Camp. The fish and other seafood is fried (they do have baked/broiled but why would you do that?). The portions are generous and the taste is terrific. Try the "black-side' flounder fillet. They are famous for their coleslaw. Service: Always great service. I've been coming here for years. You will feel like your business is appreciated. If I could give this a half star I would. We had a party of 4 and none of us enjoyed our meal. Everything was cold and not tasty at all. I sent mine back and when they brought the new plate out it was not much better. I will say that they were very busy. My dad had the catfish and he said he did not think it was even catfish. All the rest of us had the flounder filets. Would not recommend them either. Hush puppies were ok at best. I spoke with the owner at the register and I told him that our food was cold and not very good. He said to me that they were not expecting to be so busy and that they just got slammed and that the cooks were getting the food out faster than the servers could deliver it..
