I have to be fair and submit this review again. My first experience at The Caroline was terrible. From food to service it was bad. And on my birthday. We have returned three times and it was perfection. Actually, it got better each time! Food, service, atmosphere, and price make this a must do when in Troy. I appreciate when someone gives me a second chance so I did the same with this restaurant. If you had a bad experience try it again, I think you will change your mind. We were very excited to go to the Caroline, as years before we dated at the previous restaurant Tagerts. It was early (5ish) so the service was very attentive. This is one review I would rather lay out in pros and cons. Pros The fettuccine w/ scallops were great. My wife hat the fish and chips and we thought very good. The wine by the glass was very well priced and very good. Cons The bread was small (fine) but had little flavor. There's a great bakery right next to the Square which could've provided a very eloquent bread that would've complemented the "must be finest restaurant downtown Troy." The front room was very cold My meal was floating in butter. Since I can't do tomatoes I wanted some kind of garlic and oil on my fettuccine but not soaking in it it. It was very rich. The wine glasses were very unusual goblets. I'm not sure why anybody would serve red wine in those kind of glasses when there's so many other options. Interior finishes very nicely done and the service was awesome. I'm sure we will return, I would hope they bump up their game a little because The folks in Troy deserve it. read more

Don't forget to eat here if you are in the area. The Buffalo cauliflower soup was fantastic, and I got an extra bowl to go. Only $6. Five stars!! I always get the gouda salad when I come here. It's the best salad!! Five stars!! The moscato is my favorite, and the margaritas are pretty good, too ($3 on Thursdays). The bathroom is always clean but getting there is a challenge if you are on the wrong side of the restaurant because the tables are close together. My fiance ordered the Chipotle pork chop and afterwards he said he wished he would have gotten the prime rib ($33). He said "a pork chop is really just a pork chop, and it's never worth $20. We should have gone to Ruby Tuesdays for burgers." I tried a bite of it, and I thought it was too spicy. I think maybe they should take that one off their menu. I wish they would have asked if we'd like to sit outside. I honestly love their patio. Our waitress was sweet but had more tables than she could handle. My fiance asked twice for a straw. I still over tipped her because she tried hard. I will be back because this is my favorite place in Troy. I might have to go with a girlfriend because my guy was underwhelmed. Beautiful location in downtown Troy, beautiful decor inside. Wonderful for a romantic date. Staff and servers are all very kind friendly and prompt and well informed. We ordered the flatbread pepperoni pizza as an appetizer which was more than fine. My critique of the restaurant would be is very candidly the prices are kind of high for the quality of food you receive. The lobster bisque soup was extremely good, we had to russ burgers that came with chips... But even french fries was considered a four dollar upgrade. If you wanted a salad instead of a regular side that was a four dollar upgrade. Their sides aren't particularly noteworthy, but almost every side was a four dollar upgrade. We also had a fillet which was cooked pretty well but again an additional six dollars for a salad to go with it... And the fish and chips which we would not recommend at all. Great atmosphere, nice people, but the main reason you go out to eat is for the food... Had dinner with a group of friends recently. I ordered the house steak with vegetables and a side salad. The salad was miniscule and hardly covered the plate. The house made peppercorn dressing was the best part of the meal. My steak was cooked as ordered but very tough to cut through let alone chew. Highly unlikely I would return. read more

The night we went they were moderately busy. We (just two of us) were sat then a 8 top was sat maybe 5 minutes after us and they had the same server. She was moving quickly, understandably, because she was double sat, but it felt like she was walking away as she asked how everything was so we couldn't really answer. The appetizers, crab cakes and bourbon mushrooms, were good but... $14 for two crab cakes? When the food runner dropped off our food he had literally stuck his thumb in my ramekin of sauce and still set the plate on our table. Looked at us nervously and walked away. My friend got the fish and chips it came out so dark (not burnt) and reeked of dirty fryer oil. I also had a martini and it was a decent cosmo. For the most part food is only okay, but expensive. I might go back for drinks. Cosmo was good and very reasonably priced. read more

My dearest Caroline ;-) lol. I couldn't resist. This place has an elegant welcoming feel to it as you enter the doors. A committee of two is usually there to greet and welcome you to your dining experience. Some folks may not care for the dim lighting but I enjoy the certain ambiance that it lends to the experience. They have a great list of adult beverages and the servers are fast, thorough, and polite. The food is outstanding! You won't be disappointed! Every now and again, I am fortunate enough to take my spouse here for our very few and too far between date-nights. read more

I really want to like this place. They have a drink that I LOVE, but other than that the place is meh. Between g erring raw fish and chips one trip and then twice showing up without reservations and they can't accommodate. They need to say they are reservation only. Doubtful we will be back anytime soon. But I know for a fact we won't ever go without reservations. Kind of takes the spur of the moment dinners off the table. read more

Fantastic and locally owned. They have great food and service. Outside seating as well. TV at the bar, serves dinner there too. Several high top tables in bar area. We eat at the bar no matter where we are, can you tell? Anyway, food is excellent. I almost always get the salmon. Delicious. My sides are green beans and mushrooms. I've had to stuffed portobello too, and it's amazing. Hold the crabmeat and it's a great vegan option. Parking is on the street. read more

We've eaten at the Caroline several times in the past, but we had such a great dining experience last night that I had to leave a review! Last night I had a reservation for myself, my husband, my sister and brother in-law and our 19 month old son at 6:00. We were seated immediately, and they had our table ready with the high chair and children's menu already in place. I was a little worried about bringing the baby since this is a fancy date-night type place, but he was on his best behavior and the staff at the Caroline was absolutely wonderfully accommodating. Our waiter was a total delight (can't say enough good about him!) the whole evening, was prompt and attentive and even snuck out an extra slice of pie for our little boy! We ordered the restaurant week specials, I had the filet and it was amazingly tender. The mashed potatoes were perfectly fluffy and tasty and the bourbon glaze was fantastic. My husband said that if we came back again, he'd just order the Dulce De Leche pie we had for dessert for every course! I highly recommend eating here for restaurant week -- or anytime. Very nice restaurant on the square in Troy. Very nice atmosphere, a little higher atmosphere and price than a chain restaurant, but worth it. On Wednesdays they have half price bottles of wine. Always fun to go with friends and each get a glass or two from a bottle and just relax and talk. Service has always been nice. read more

Have been a faithful Caroline fan for many years. Recently visited the restaurant on a week night and while we had excellent service, the food was subpar. My husband had to send his New York strip back two times because they could not cook his steak correctly. For the price, this was a big disappointment. Mother's Day buffet. Absolutely excellent. Each of the main meat dishes were interesting, delicious, and distinctive (salmon, chicken, prime rib, ham). I would have been happy with any one of them were this not a buffet and simply from the menu. Side dishes were superb as well. None of the vegetables were over done or mushy. Salads were great, too. Desserts were superior, especially the chocolate pie/mousse. We have definitely added The Caroline to our short list of favorite restaurants in the Dayton OH region. read more

The decor is tasteful, upscale without being formal, and serene. Ambience immediately puts you in the mood to have a delightful dining experience. A+ on the food. While all the food groups are covered, they are prepared differently than what you would typically find. Everything was well-prepared and tasty. Wine list was a little sparse but at least it's was priced right. The one area that needs work is the service. The servers start out with one of those chainy "hello, my name is blah-blah-blah, and I'm going to be taking care of you tonight" and then of course, don't (like somehow saying that casts people into a spell, and that no matter what, they'll think the server was great... just spare me, ok?). Took too long between courses, and the server should have worn a pager so we could get her when we needed her, because she sure made herself scarce the whole night. Forgot items too but didn't forget to charge us for them. Definitely 10% service at best. (Actually, I'm glad she told me her name so next time I can be sure to insist I am given someone else.) I wouldn't let that dissuade you, though. May be the best restaurant in Troy, and if you are up for a 30 minute drive, worth the trip from Dayton. read more

Sweet spot in Troy! I hardly ever go to Troy on business trips (would rather stay closer to work) but Hey... It was worth it! Very classy ambiance but not too upscale: perfect for date or business dinner. Service was perfect, and waitress always smiling and very patient! We had the stuffed portobello mushrooms, maple glazed salmon, pasta..and we all loved it! Not s big fan of the bread (too salty) but hey..no need to over eat bread when the entree itself is so good! 2nd time there - the NY Steak was a thicker cut than last time and was perfect....even better and more tender than some of the USDA Prime steaks I have had in the past in Chicago! I was in Troy for the GOTR Stopover, so I feel like I have to give them the benefit of the doubt a bit-I mean we waited in line outside to get in; they probably did more business in that one day (Saturday) then they do in a couple of months. That being said, they handled the crowds really well and no one seemed overwhelmed or exhausted, even though there was still a line of people still waiting outside at 3:30 in the afternoon. They even honored the Yelp check in discount and applied it to our whole party of four-I was quite surprised given the nature of the weekend. The food was good, pretty standard, but good. I had a grilled chicken sandwich with a side of stewed tomatoes. The chicken seemed a bit dry, but was fine. My only legitimate complaint was the tomatoes included for my sandwich-paltry thin, pale slices of Roma tomatoes. It's the height of tomato season, and I couldn't even get 'real' tomatoes?! The stewed tomatoes were good, not something I would typically order, but I needed something that wasn't fried. Again, it was a limited menu for the weekend, in looking at the full menu online, it looks like they have some things I might have better enjoyed. It looks like their entrees might be where they shine. Our server apparently left sometime between taking our order and delivering our food. He told us he had only worked there two days when we asked questions about menu items. Luckily, another server picked up on the fact that we'd been waiting awhile and picked up our table. She was helpful and attentive. If I were back in the area, I would try this place again under more typical circumstances. Seems like an anchor in the Square of Troy. Red wines get opened and just corked and thus taste oxidized. They need the rubber corks and the suction tool. ALWAYS ASK FOR A FRESHLY CORKED BOTTLE AND IN FRONT OF YOU. Good burger but wanted a medium rare Russ burger, got a medium to medium well. Small bathrooms should be gender neutral since it's only one at a time and thus seems to be a wait occasionally. Good people. Nice ambience. Solid varied menu. Would be a great place to eat on a nice day outside on the square. read more
