Reviews are all over the place for this restaurant. I have been here several times and always have a positive experience. Yes, the establishment is old. As other Yelpers have stated, the men's room does need some freshening up. Personally, service had always been amazing. Friendly, welcoming and part of the reason I come back. My last trip I had the goulash. It was very good. I enjoy cooking and can't come close to replicating it. The burgers are huge and taste great. read more

Stopped in for dinner. Service was fast and ultra friendly. Dining room is a lot more quiet than the bar. Six of us ate. We had the salmon, shrimp and pasta, Hungarian goulash, jeager schnitzel. There were no leftovers! Food portions were great and very tasty. Full bar service and reasonably priced. You can't go wrong here!! read more

I stopped here for lunch as there really aren't that many places to choose from in the area. What can I say? I have read many bad reviews online and on some level, I understand them. I hit the bathroom first. The men's room was disgusting .. with dead bugs along the window sill and also in the sink and on top of the urinals. Clearly, the bathroom had not been cleaned in a long time ... but I had to go! It's old and grungy, but it doesn't have to be dirty and disgusting. The interior of the bar room was fine, if not very dated. I thought it was very cool actually. It was like stepping back in time. I just wasn't sure how clean it was after seeing the mens room. I will eat almost anything, anywhere .. but I found myself getting a stomach ache before I even ordered. There were some folks seated outside (it was a beautiful 80° fall day) and about 20 people inside. Some people at the bar looked like they hadn't seen a dentist in more than a decade. Not judging, just saying. I sat at the bar, very patiently ... waiting for a menu or some sort of acknowledgement from the waitress. There was only one running around and I quickly felt sorry for her. There wasn't even a bartender. She was going from table outside to tables inside to the folks seated at the bar. Eventually, she made her way to me and asked me what I wanted. I never got a menu so I played it safe and asked for a cheeseburger, fries and a diet coke. I really didn't want this lunch to turn into a 3 hour event. Soon after I ordered, a nice couple sat down at the bar next to me. I was trying to eavesdrop and figure out if they had been there before. They seemed quite comfortable and ordered some chicken fingers, which they said were delicious. My cheeseburger came and I have to say, it was HUGE! The waitress brought ketchup and salt & pepper. I never did get silverware but since I ordered a burger and fries, who cares? It was delicious and I was so full from it that I only had a few fries. I got the waitress's attention once I was ready to pay and I have to say the price was not bad at all. I gave her a decent tip because I felt bad for her, being the only one working. I am guessing someone didn't show up for work that day? Before I left I peeked into the main dining room. It looks beautiful in the picture I posted, but it was very dated in real life... like something from THE SHINING. Overall, the food was better than I expected and I can' t blame the waitress for being the "only waitress". Really disappointed to be writing this, because we should have just left. We went for a late lunch after day of rafting on the river nearby as a diverse group of 6. It wasn't busy - were one of 3 tables inside. Half of us found a table and one of the two waitresses brought 3 menus and that was the last we saw of her except for her nasty glares every time she walked by. Long story short, we watched the two waitresses go behind the bar, shoot us glances/point at us and appear to argue over who would serve our table. Eventually, they pulled the older gentleman bartending into it and the bartender ended up waiting on our table. We had no interaction with either waitress except to thank her for dropping off the menus. We watched both waitresses be polite and attentive to the other tables while shooting us looks and occasionally pointing at us. To other reviewer's points - service was excruciatingly slow. Maybe it's because for the first 30 minutes they were hoping we would just leave? I don't know. It was an incredibly uncomfortable and disappointing experience. Please don't patronize this place. If you're in the area for an activity, it's better to just hit up a taco bell once you're back on the highway with this place far in the rear view where it belongs. read more

Disappointed by the restaurant we wanted to eat at being closed, we stopped here for lunch. I watched our meals being served to the wrong table, tried to call her over before she did it but she ignored me. Instead, she brought the one piece she couldn't get them to take, one of our kids' chicken nuggets, to us. This was an hour after we ordered. Another 30 minutes passes and the rest of us were served something similar to what we each ordered but not quite. Hubby said the burger was good even though it was missing all the toppings he ordered. Our poor kids ended up puking in the car on the way home from being too hungry for too long. read more

Your going to enjoy your sit down lunch here. I had the largest Portabello Mushroom burger I've ever had here. The soup was obviously homemade with huge chunks of vegetables. The waitress was very friendly and attentive. The menu had some interesting things on it like spatzal, perogies and barbarian pretzels. The prices were fair. read more

I'm from Pennsylvania and I got caught in a snowstorm passing through to New York when I spotted this place. Honestly it's the only place other than a tobacco store so I was so thanking my lucky stars to find out I could get something to eat and a room for the night until the roads were safe. The food came out in 45 minutes or so, I ordered the goulash and a ginger ale. Next time I will try the burger because she recommended those were her favorites. The owner himself is Hungarian so this is a special menu item, it tasted like home cooking it was soooooooo goood!!!! The perfect thing to warm me up on such a cold night. The place is HUGE and beautiful in an old historic way. The dining hall which was closed could host large classy parties or events. For a Tuesday they had a good number of regulars that evening, I only guess because they were there despite the weather. Blue collar gentlemen that were sharing beers burgers and a good laugh at the bar. Personally I really loved the real live potted plants in the window it made it feel genuine. I have many houseplants and I don't like fake rubber plants I know that's an odd point but it made me smile. The bar tender was my waitress and she was very sweet and did a great job getting the food out quickly. The portion was enough for two people. I had plenty saved for lunch when I got home. I almost ordered a Bavarian pretzel with beer cheese and I'm glad I didn't because I already had trouble finishing the warm savory noodles with tender bites of meat. Even though It was snowing pretty hard I still got a great deal on the room which was seriously lucky because I had $100 in my wallet when I left the house. I couldn't have afforded an over priced cheap motel room or food so I am still surprised at the great deal I got, I'm not sure how they stay in business. I appreciate places that don't price gouge when they know they can charge more for a room. Especially with COVID you can tell this is a family owned business with values. The room was standard with a bed, mini fridge dresser and a for me personally a sparkling clean bathtub which was what I needed a hot bath!! Toiletries were provided in the sink and I always keep an emergency bad in my trunk so I had some essentials which was great. Both the food and a warm room with a comfy queen size bed for the evening possibly saved me from a car accident so I'm truly grateful. The rooms were clean and what you would expect from a standard motel. It's not the ritz but I slept well and had no dust or bugs bothering me which is surprising when your in the woods. Even I have a spider or two in my house lol. The owner was so nice as I left to be sure I had everything I needed and was happy with the room. It's a simple code access so no key to return which is convenient. The hot water did take a good 20 minutes to start for my bath but it filled up fine and again it was really cold that night so a hot bath was pretty epic! Read a my book called the circle and slept in until 9am. I think more people should go here I'd hate to see such a nice place close up. I will definitely be returning when the weather gets nice because I spotted boat rentals right next door. Oh did I mention it's on a river!! Bring your kayak for a great time this summer. read more

Went here for the first time yesterday for lunch with my family. My Aunt has been here many times and loved it and wanted to take my mom and I there. The place was extremely clean, good prices, the waitress could have been way more friendlier. The food was ok... My burger was gigantic but extremely salty. The waitress saw my glass of soda was empty didn't even ask if I wanted another which I did. She only came over to check on us once. By the time she came back we were ready to leave so there went my drink. My mom had fish with a salad. The salad was completely slimy and stuck together. My aunt had portobello mushrooms which she loved. I gave 3 stars because 1st impression to me is everything and it could have been way better. I probably will not go back. read more

Before I go into all my issues I had, I should disclose the manager did comp us the bill. But there were so many issues the first being when we asked to speak to the manager he was drunk. The drinks took probably 25 minutes to come out, and then they decided to bring the bread out another 25 minutes after ordering our food. Then when the food came out, much, much later, it was the wrong food. So when we finally did get our food about 1-2hrs later it was not good. The fries were just extremely oily and they only had once choice of dressing. When we asked for two side salads instead of the fries it took even longer for that to come out. And for some reason they could not make them both at the same time and brought the second one out 20 minutes after the first. I will not be going back here. read more

The food was too expensive and did not come with dinner rolls, salad or soup. $30 for a steak and a came with one baby potato, two pieces of broccoli and two slices carrots. My sister's wedding rehearsal dinner was here the night before her wedding. This was the only restaurant near the Mountainview Manor that could accommodate us, so all of us were kind of forced into it. I really enjoyed my food (I had the steak) but everyone else I went with had issues with it. They claimed that the pasta was too "al dente" for it to be a dinner dish and the chicken was under cooked. Regardless, they know how to cook steak right. The wait-staff was average. One issue was that they didn't refill our water pitcher nearly as much as I wished they did. read more

We were charged $135 per night to stay in the Hickory Haven hell hole hotel. The rooms have not been updated since the 1940s as per the manager. The rooms are disgusting, moldy and musky smelling, antiquated TV with 2 outlets in the whole room that don't even take modern plugs! The Windows did not close. The AC barely put out air. The smoke alarm had a defective battery and kept beeping for hours until we took it off. Construction stuff all over the porch. Oh and the pool had a broken filter and looked a gross shade of vomit green so we couldn't go in. Ridiculous. We complained and they tried to switch us to 2 other rooms and one was worse than the next. They said they had 4 nice updated rooms but "wanted to reserve those for other potential guests because they were more expensive". Finally they offered a whole 10% discount. Woop dee dooo. Will never come back to this dump. read more

My wife and I have been going to the Carriage House in Barryville, NY for the past 6 years. They offer a bar menu and a regular dining room menu. In nice weather we enjoy sitting outside and eating off the bar menu. To begin with they have excellent soups, we all ways get a cup of the soup of the day. They usually offer special appetizers of the day. The coconut shrimp are outstanding, as are the tempura shrimp. My favorite entree is their steak sandwich. It is a nice 10 oz strip steak, lightly seasoned served on garlic toast with home made french fries and a small salad with a good house dressing. You get all this for $12.95. The steak is always cooked to perfection, I like it rare. The hot wings are the best you will find south of the Anchor Bar in Buffalo. They are fried crisp and good and spicy. The cheese steak is good, but not to be confused with one from Pat's in Philly. They offer more elaborate fare in the dining room including some Hungarian specials. The Wiener Schnitzel, with spatzels is breaded lightly and fried to a golden perfection. It is a large portion, more then I can eat, and I can eat a lot. I've had their Scampi and the pasta can be over done. The side veggies they serve with a meal are just OK. Around Christmas they usually offer a buffet and open bar for a few hours as a thank you to their patrons. How many restaurants do something like this? A very nice touch. read more

We have been eating here for 20 years and for the most part the food was good. In August we had excellent tasty meals, like salmon in dill sauce. But my last visit on Septembet 5th was different. I had a chicken with pasta that was bland and had an off flavored sauce. Perhaps it was a different chef. We had a great time at the Carriage House restaurant as well as at the hickory haven lodges. We planned to stay 3 nights, but we enjoyed it so much we stayed for 5 instead! It is very close to the Delaware River, where there are rafting, canoes, kayaks, and more.. We know some of the rooms are still under development and aren't as great as the others, but if you do want to have a great room, I recommend staying at room 8. It is very close to the pool, and has many windows. It is clean, and has lots of space inside, with a front porch. When we arrived, the pool was cleaned the next morning and everybody enjoyed it a lot. The staff at the restaurant are very kind, and they have great food and service. We will definitely be coming back soon, and most certainly had a great time. read more

I was looking forward to my overnight get away with my partner. I wasn't really impressed with the the building but it had that old been here forever kinda charm. The owner wasn't there to meet us like he said he would and you have to check in at the bar area okay whatever no problem.The room was old old old and smelly just that never been air out never updated type smell Again I'll deal with it,next we go to dinner only 1 guy working the bar, the bar tables and dining room tables still ok,we asked for a menu was told none available since a large party(12) arrived before us,now my mood is changing ok let's get a drink while we wait, my drink had something black stuck to the inside glass,the table cloth is dirty,the silverware and small plate all was coated in this undistinguishable substance.The dining room could use a good cleaning and to be updated.The final straw was us being told it'll probably be a long wait for our food since the large party arrived and only 1 person in kitchen, that was it my partner asked for the bill asked for the room charge be returned and we're leaving! We ran into the owner in the parking lot and tried to explain what happened inside and why we were leaving he just waved us off mid sentence and went inside.We called around for other accommodations and ended up at Catskill Mountain Resort.The staff and place get 5 stars. Terrible experience here. We made a reservation for a group of ten. We were seated and waited 20 minutes until we waved down a bus boy who took our drink orders. We waited another ten minutes until we waved down a women who we assumed was our waitress. We asked for our drinks she said sorry were out of glasses we have a big event in the other room. Then she said if we order food it would take a minimum of 45 minutes to get it. Our whole party just got up and left. The management should of told us on the phone that the dinner would be slow and they couldn't handle regular dining with an event going on at the same time. We were moving to the area and just needed a bed for the night as we were working on our new home. We made the HUGE mistake of staying at the Carriage House. The first room they tried to put us in smelled like backed up sewage. When we complained, we were given a room with a broken bed! We were too exhausted to complain again...we slept on the floor and swore we would warn people away from the place when we moved here. We have. Don't stay here.... Don't give them any business. We have learned that people in the region have a very low opinion of this place, as we do. read more

This was our first time going here and we were seriously impressed. We went for takeout on the last day of vacation in the area. The food was absolutely amazing. Perhaps the best, most crispy wings we ever had!! (Honey Teriyaki) Seriously, we were blown away with how good the food was. I'm sitting here knowing my mother will want to go to the Carriage House for dinner tonight. It's a quirky place in Barryville, a town trying to adjust to an exodus of old-timers and an influx of city people. A large, old-world-style restaurant with a separate bar and then a motel in the rear. The restaurant is real old-school German food, elegantly done, with orchids, linen napkins, serious drapes, a piano, and a serene ambience. They serve schnitzel, spaetzle, cabbage and the usual steaks and fish and stuff. The bar offers my favorite, a delicious herb chicken wrap with black beans and sweet potato fries, served with mesclun salad, the usual bar food, many of the restaurant menu items, and the most decadent, sick, obscenely self-indulgent fried chunk of swiss cheese with marinara sauce ever. This is a whole slab of cheese breaded and dropped in the fryer. Not slices. Not "fingers". Like, a half pound of cheese. Can you say pints of chocolate stout for $4? They also carry excellent Spaten and several other nice microbrews on tap. A word, though. About ten miles down Route 97 was a bar called the Hawks Nest. It was destroyed in a fire about two years ago, and was a HUGE hangout for bikers, who love the winding mountain roads and the scenic beauty. They have now adopted the bar here at the Carriage House on weekend afternoons, so plan accordingly. They're nice, though. Just loud. Please note that there are widely varying prices between the restaurant's and the bar's. The bar prices are all under $10 for most bar food. We went into this place knowing nothing about it. We typically go to Il Castello or Baker's Tap Room when in the area but nothing was open for lunch so we tried it. I wasn't expecting much when we walked into an empty bar and restaurant. The bartender who was also our server was extremely nice and efficient. We were pleasantly surprised with our grilled BLT avocado wrap and Carriage House salad with mozzarella. The bread was excellent and came with butter, plus a garlic and oil dip and a cream cheese spread that were excellent. Stash tea was a welcome alternative to Lipton! Okay. I'm from Brooklyn where we know the difference between ethnic food and bar food. Great food here - these are former owners of the KLEINE KONDITEREI for gosh sakes! Excellent Hungarian and German/Bavarian food. Their chicken fingers were excellent I that they were perfectly done. I had the Pork Paprikosh with Spaetzle. My wife the chicken ceasar. They cater weddings as well as run this Inn. Have had the bar menu for years before realizing they were German and Hungarian. Lovely owner/server. Former upper East Sider/ Yorkville residents. Paprikosh was under salted thankfully - easy remedied. Great German beer fresh baked bread and desserts. Probably best restaurant in the area. read more

Ended up in Barryvile, NY chasing a NY Times article about the Beaver Brook community.Really one of the only games in this town other than the Sports Bar, it seemed. Along the route - out of Port Jervis - the pickings were very limited. So........ The bar/grill room is what it is. An old run down NY drinking joint. The Dining room, seen thru curtained doors, looked fairly nice aka a 1940's Catskills wedding room. Night and day from the bar. So - a low expectation. But. Menu is fairly interesting, smoked trout and locally sourced veggies, spaetzle goulash...Hand made burgers, and a fresh roast beef cheese steak. Beer selection is limited and the taps weren't working, if in fact that was true. But a can of Guinness and a Yuengling were fine. The fries were tasty and fresh but soggy on three separate orders Not sure what that's about. .The BLT was good, the Delaware Cheese steak was excellent and the Chicken wrap was also excellent. The greens and dressing sides were also quite good. All of it was much better than expected, so that was a win-win.... Service was good, a bit slow, with only one bar maid/waitress but acceptable. What was not acceptable was the flies and the smell of smoke in the room. The bathroom is untouched from the 20's and possibly the last time it was totally cleaned....Be somewhat warned. It is certainly a place to stop should you kayak down the river and need a place to eat. In it's day, as seen in the newspaper clip on the front door, this may have been a Catskills destination. Celebs galore seemed to visit. There's been a lot of water under the bridge since then. That will make more sense if you visit here. It's a B+ in my book. read more

We stayed at the Hickory Haven for a friends wedding and I was extremely disappointed given that the rooms were $150 a night. The room look like it hadn't had a thorough cleaning in at least a few years - large quantities of bugs in the light fixture in the middle of the room. The outlets in the main room had indicators stating not to plug in blow dryers or curling irons - the wiring definitely needs to be updated! The showerhead was barely functional and the water went from extreme hot to extreme cold with no rhyme or reason. Not to mention that the bathroom was last renovated in the early 60s. These rooms need a MAJOR overhaul and some TLC if they want to stay in business. read more

After a full day of tubing on the river, we were starving. Was not expecting anything great and this looked like a decent enough place. Food was very good and they had offerings for vegan diet (my wife). Calamari appetizer was cooked perfectly - easy to mess this up by over cooking. Avocado egg roll (vegan) was a unique and tasty item for anyone's taste. Kids had a turkey wrap and chicken wrap and said they were very good. I ha the Hungarian Goulash with Spaetzle. Very good! Will definitely stop back here on out next River adventure or camping trip. read more

So as a city girl living in Brooklyn, we finally made a trip to the country(yes I'm shocked I lasted for 4 days). Well we came on a camping trip but I refused sleeping in a tent we had to opt for a hotel room first we were placed in their interesting on the hill cabins (bates motel anyone?!?!?!) After a major anxiety/ panic attack mode my boyfriend started freaking out with me as well as killing off spiders in the entire room the owner was a sweetheart and moved our room to the "common rooms" which are cheaper, cleaner, and not bug infested!!! This time I actually loved and enjoyed it very much! My country girl experience was pretty interesting. I strongly recommend this motel; its cheap, clean, and in a great location. read more
