Our cat Cleo has ongoing ear infection issues causing her to scratch her ears and face raw. It's been a persistent problem leading us to seek a vet specializing in feline medicine for her care. For years we've gone to chain vets but the problem with those places is your furry friend is treated as a number, not a name. Also, the environment in a normal vet freaks our cat out too much. Prior to being seen, our cat was boarded for some hours and caged in with other animals (dogs and cats) where they would loudly bark and meow in anxiety waiting for the doctor. When your pet is in an unfamiliar environment where other furry folk are freaking out, you're guaranteed the fear within the room is contagious. Our last visit to the vet left her peeing in her carrier, due to overstimulation, on her ride home. This year we took a different approach. We took our time finding a vet and combed through the entire Chicagoland area on Yelp to find cat only vets. Although The Cat Practice is nowhere near us, we held faith in the reviews and made an appointment with Dr. Coughlin before end of the year. Dr is booked months out which to us is a good sign. At arrival, we filled out her paperwork and the receptionist informed us of the intake process. We didn't realize they needed her records from her prior vet(s) but the front desk only needed the names and locations from where she was last seen. Within minutes they were already transferring over the requested information. She was taken in alone to be seen and tested. Once her eval was complete, we were invited in the exam room to speak with doctor on her findings. Dr. Lori Coughlin was thorough with us and addressed any concerns along the way. She was able to clear out some mild earwax buildup which she showed us post swab. She determined the cause of her itching was a combination of a yeast infection in her ears plus possible allergies. We were taken home with topical and oral medications from their onsite pharmacy. A request for OTC (over the counter) Claritin led us to pick some up at our nearby Walgreens the following day. We're crossing our fingers hoping this regimen makes Cleo itch free! Cleo tolerated the entire 90 minute process. Although a little miffed from the typical poke and prod she managed. A little drooling in the mouth but no pee in the carrier pad. Once at home she jumped right out of her carrier to return to her normal way of life. Her full body assessment states she is healthy and mildly overweight (@ 10.5 lbs) which is all we ask for. After our first successful visit we plan to stick with Dr. Coughlin and the kind staff at the Cat Practice for future follow ups. read more

We adopted two (2) domestic, short-haired boys a couple of years ago. Hubby and I knew that they were due to for an examination. However, since they were indoor cats and wouldn't let them go out on their own without any human supervision, we have had some difficulties on "luring" them to the carriers. Persian fought very, very hard when we tried to "ask" him to come to the cage. Meowth, on the other hand, made it to "The Cat Practice," though he wet himself on the way to the clinic. It was the first time that we saw him this nervous. Oh, poor buddy... We got to "The Cat Practice" fairly early, like forty-five (45) minutes prior to our 4:15pm appointment. My first impression with this place was very positive: cat painting, cat ceramic figurines, cat photos, water fountain, scratch trees, treats, and a Kuerig coffee machine are in the waiting room. Ruth, the receptionist, got our paperwork started and continued conversing with us about our boys. She has a very soothing voice and an engaging personality, with both "clients" and "patients." Dr. Lori Coughlin was SO good at handling our Meowth. He was more comfortable after we let him out of the carrier. I would say Dr. Lori is quirky, but is definitely a super cat lover and makes living with her passion for cats. Well, I'm kind of jealous of her and knew I should have gone to vet school so that I could become a "cat practitioner." Anyway, I'm satisfied with just being a cat mom. Dr. Lori provided a plenty of useful information on Meowth's earwax and eye booger built-up. He also had his rabies shot. Although Persian failed to make it to his appointment, she asked us about him as well. Her service was very thorough. In the end, a wellness report was generated and Meowth is doing quite ok for being a five (5)- year-old young man! Ruth told me on the phone when I requested an appointment on the phone in regard of parking. She said the lot was being worked on and wasn't available. We found free street parking along Chicago Ave. in the Frank Lloyd Wright historic district about four (4) blocks west. I would say finding a spot was easy and the houses in this neighborhood looked amazing! The cost for Meowth's first wellness check was fair. An itemized receipt was given and all exams performed and prescription fulfillment were listed clearly. Hubby and I will do our best to convince Persian to come and visit Dr. Lori. Do not go to this vet...malpractice malpractice malpractice. If I could choose zero stars I would. This was my first visit with my cat after having moved. After waiting for a half hour with no further greeting other than check in I asked what the status was. The front desk person informed me that the doctor was not even in yet and she was texting her because I was waiting. In my previous eight years with my cat I never waited more than five minutes at my vet. The only reason for this new vet was that we moved. Pay attention to the negative reviews on this site. People plan a lot around their pets and it is stressful for them to be in the car and go to visits. This was so beyond inconsiderate. Also note they have signs that you are not allowed to go into the room with your pet which is highly unusual. I had already informed the front desk person I was not okay with that and she said she would inform the doctor (this is why I thought the doctor was there). Go somewhere else!! read more

I originally came to this place of business due to the reviews. However, based upon my experience this place is the most unprofessional animal clinic I have ever encountered!! I know they post that they are understaffed ok I can understand that. But, when I'm the first person there with my two cats and no one else is in the waiting room nor in the treatment rooms and I'm waiting over 30 minutes for no reason , we have a problem. I had to complain to the receptionist and ask " what is taking so long no one is here". That immediately put a bad taste in my mouth! Let me give you a clear picture of what transpired on my visit. I had a 3pm appointment and I waited over 40 minutes for my first cat to seen . My two cats and I didn't finally leave til after 5pm!!! One of my cats ended up urinating in her carrier because of the long wait. To make matters worse, we were first time clients. I'm sorry but if you are that understaffed don't take any new clients!! Second, it's been over a week since my cats blood work was completed and still no results!! I called 2xs expressing my grievances which fell on deaf ears. No call back no email detailing the reason for the delay. I'm never coming to this poorly run business. This place is dirty and extremely unprofessional!! I can't say enough nice things about this vet office. We have a very elderly cat with seizure disorder and had previously been following with VCA after ending up there as emergency visit. We initially had a good experience but when the vet we liked left the practice we had a very hard time getting quality care. Despite my cat being extremely sick with deranged liver labs they wouldn't do anything without a battery of additional expensive testing (i.e. $900 ultrasound). We went to dr Lori for a second opinion and I honestly believe she saved our cats life. She is going strong 3 years later. The front desk staff are professional and helpful, but can occasionally be a little quirky. Dr Lori is incredibly professional and knowledgeable. I have been completely satisfied with her care for our 2 cats and highly recommend her to others. They have senior cat discounts on certain days each month and this helps keep cost down. They also have a pharmacy service which I was surprised to find very fairly priced. Parking is easy- street parking right in front of the office. read more

I don't have enough words for what this team has done for my Charlie boy. After getting a scary Diabetes/Renal Failure diagnosis in December, my only option for care was a local animal hospital. They helped me stabilize him but i knew I needed care a specialized clinic...especially since my guy is going to be 17 this year. On our first visit, I learned he was sicker than we thought and that he actually had a super rare condition (Cushing's Disease). We settled on a plan and they got to work on caring for side of effect of skin tears. Our second visit didn't go as well because his wound was infected so the team came up with a new treatment plan and got Charlie an outfit to protect his skin. It has done wonders....and he's not only stronger and in much less pain, I'm also getting my old boy back. He's letting me pick him up, he's following me around the house and he's playful again. I'm not sure how much time I'm going to get with him....but I'm so happy for that now, he's happy and he's responding well to treatment. Oh....and he's become a favorite there so he's soaking up the love. Thank you so much for the easier beginning of a scary road. It's great to have a team that cares about my guy as much as I do and that are gentle when walking me through all the potential good and bad. I cannot say enough about Dr. Coughlin and her team. My Maine Coon Mia Bella was constipated for several days and she was getting sick from it. Unfortunately Cat Practice couldn't squeeze her in due to too many emergencies and in all fairness I called later in day. Of course I panicked and started searching for a vet that could see her asap. Went to other Vet (name shall be withheld, their in Countryside). They supposedly gave her all these procedures and xrays, enemas', massage etc and so forth . Kept her over night (which cost more than when I was in Hospital) with nobody there overnight, so why charge me so much? $2000.00 later no improvement. Anyway brought her home which she was totally stressed due to dogs barking and howling all the time. Still no Bm for a few days. Called Cat Practice and told them what has happened and pleaded with Ruth (the receptionist} to please get me in. She talked to Dr. Lori and she said bring her in first thing in am. Brought her in. She was there all day. Dr. examined her and checked her totally out and said there are no blockages or mega colon. Her rectum was moist which meant things were happening. She told me to take her off of the med the other vet gave me and keep her on just wet food and give her the lactulose only 2x a day, and be patient! Make a long story short. She is back to normal Of course Dr. stated she is overweight by 6 pounds. But she just lost her Daddy due to Covid and all she wanted was to eat, probably going through her own depression as I am. She was with him 24/7. Sad. She is back to being her sassy self. And they charged me only under one tenth of what the other one charged me! Lesson learned. If you have a cat this is where to take them. They really do care about their felines! And they know how to deal with the difficult ones such as my Girl! Absolutely perfect place to take my cat. We adopted her about a month and a half ago and noticed her ears starting to bother her so we made an appointment (within the same week I called) and headed over. From the moment you walk in the entire staff is so friendly and excited to see you and your cat, and not in a fake this-is-my-job kind of way. Dr Lori was PERFECT with our cat, who is nice but.. a cat at the vet. She wasn't too happy and would act calm and then bat/bite at us randomly, and it didn't phase Dr. Lori at all. She knew exactly how to handle our less than perfectly behaved girl and made it as low stress as possible. Last Spring my 8 year old Norwegian Forest Cat became severely ill with a blocked colon. After spending a lot on $ at the VCA in Berwyn in which they basically did nothing I went to the Cat Practice. We've been back a couple times since the ordeal for followup checkups and the staff is kind, really know their stuff, and won't charge you an arm or a leg . My experience with TCP is mixed. Ultimately I don't think I'll be returning. I took my large male cat and was seen by Dr. Coughlin. She was great, but my cat is a growler at the vet, and the vet assistants kept peeking in to suggest that he was about to turn violent. Dr. Coughlin kept them out and I appreciated that. I don't need jaded vet assistant tying my cat down because he's having a bad day. Her diagnosis was fair but not accurate. I didn't get the feeling that she trusted me as a partner in my cats care. That's probably because people tend not to be actively involved in their cats care. I came for a cat exhibiting signs of asthma and I wanted either antibiotics for an upper respiratory infection, or some kind of inhaler to try and ease his coughing attacks. She suggested claritin for seasonal allergies. It didn't work. When I called back to follow up and try antibiotics, they wanted to charge me $59 for the consultation. My wife formerly worked at Blum and advised me to hang up and just call Blum. Blum is in the city, so it's a long way to take a cat. But, once you have a relationship with a Blum doctor, they're always willing to follow up and talk with you after hours to make sure you get the best care for your pet. Dr. Shule routinely spends hours after his shift talking to patients on the phone for no charge. I wanted to find a good vet in Oak Park so I didn't have to drive my little guy around too much, but my cat's health is too important to me to mess around with frustrations. read more

Dr. Lori is fantastic. After a scary weekend at the Midwest Animal Hospital, she gladly saw our little guy first thing. We had just moved, so we were anxious about taking him to someone new, but she allayed all our concerns. The animal hospital couldn't tell us if he was going to live 3 more days or 3 more years, but Dr. Lori never let on if she was worried about him dying too soon. She was thorough and practical, warm and compassionate. Even though he was still obviously very sick, I felt immediately better knowing Dr. Lori was optimistic about the treatment plan. She's great about calling us with follow-ups and emailing if she doesn't get a hold of us. I'm relieved to say our cat is doing much better and we're still in regular contact with Dr. Lori for ongoing treatment. After spending $800 at the animal hospital, the Cat Practice charges seemed like nothing. Even when we were concerned about his breathing and took him back a day after his initial visit, we were only charged $25 for a mini follow-up visit. Ruth at the front desk is wonderful, too. She told me that the minute we bring our babies through their front door, they become their babies, too. So sweet and so nice to hear when you're worried out of your mind! read more

Love this place! Helpful and friendly staff and vet who takes her time with you and your baby. I didn't have all the paperwork with me from Anti-Cruelty so I emailed it when I got home. I got a quick answer from Dr. Lori not just acknowledging my email but a few paragraphs about her concerns. I appreciated that. The only thing that bugged me was that I was charged a new patient fee which was never mentioned to me even when I called inquiring about the cost of a visit. I was also charged $36 for a poop test. Dr. Lori Coughlin recently took over the cat practice and she is great too. She spent so much time with us and never made us feel rushed. I had a list of questions - literally a long list written out - and she took time to answer each question. She is caring and has a subtle sense of humor that is just wonderful - especially for me because I'm always so worried about my cats and she helped to put me at ease. She doesn't scold or make you feel like crap if you make a mistake in the treatment of your kitty. One of my cats has diabetes and she was really understanding of my screw ups with his meds. I really love this place and am so glad I moved to the Oak Park area. I feel like my kitties are getting the best health care available. Update 2011: My cat was very ill and in the hospital. The specialist told me he was going to die without surgery and may even die if he had the surgery. I decided against the surgery after talking things over with Dr. Lori because neither of us believed the specialist was right and my cat isn't a good candidate for surgery. Dr. Lori worked with me to formulate a treatment plan. She did a lot of research and on her own time and she read through the information I sent her. Five months later my cat is alive and well and his numbers returned to normal. I really appreciate that Dr. Lori spent so much time working with me and helped to save my cat. read more

Can't say enough about Dr. Lori and her team. Dr. Lori is a brilliant vet and is great at explaining complicated conditions. She cares so much for each animal and works long hours for them. It's really remarkable. Dr. Lori is also fair. Her fees are low and she is mindful of customers' budgets. Unlike other vets in town, she has does not take advantage of worried pet owners by over charging, over testing, and doing unnecessary procedures. The Cat Practice did everything in their power to try an help us save our kitty Sadie. Sadly Sadie did not make it. I do not like Dr. Coughlin. It seems like she doesn't like cats. Is that possible? She's a cat vet. Or maybe it's just my cat. She's rough, unprofessional, and careless, and NOT thorough with exams. I'll be taking my cat to a different vet next time. Not sure if Rachele (sp?) is still a vet tech there, but she was terrific. She would make a great vet. The Cat Practice took care of my cat B.J. when he was a young kitten until his health failed him at age 14. I was a bad mom and hadn't taken him in for a long time when he got very sick. They could have given me a hard time but they knew I was already feeling guilty. They presented the options and estimated the costs so we could make our decisions. I used to bring my cats to The Cat Practice years ago when Dr. Malin was the owner - and was very happy. I moved further away and subsequently ended up working with another vet at another practice - that I loved - until she retired and have been looking for a convenient, good fit for me and my cats ever since. TCP is local again and I had good experiences in the past, so I decided to spare my most travel-sensitive cats the long trek to Ravenswood and tried TCP. I've been to TCP and seen Dr. Lori Coughlin on three separate occasions - with two of my cats. I didn't realize until this third appointment that she was not the vet that I used to see there . . . and that was the reason that my experiences felt different. And not in a good way. I agree with other reviewers on here that her handling of the cats can be unnecessarily rough. One of my cats has chronic ear infections (and only one ear) - and we went to see her for a regular, run of the mill ear infection. She insisted on manipulating his ear to such an extent - in order to get a good view of his eardrum - that he was literally screaming and had to wear a mask. While I understand that there was likely a reason that she wanted to see his ear drum, there HAD to be a better way (and has been since - with my now regular vets at Jewell Animal Hospital) to diagnose and treat him. I was recently there twice over the last two months for an annual visit for another cat, and then a visit due to illness. Again - I left thinking "something has changed" and dissatisfied. I brought my cat in due to pain in his leg/foot. While I understood that some manipulation of his sore limb/foot would be necessary - I didn't understand why it was necessary to pin him down and clip his back claws (which involved the very sensitive foot) so as to prevent her from being scratched, or to comb out a small mat near his sensitive back leg. These were very painful and unnecessary experiences for my cat. And again, my cat was put in a mask and was screaming in pain. The icing on the cake was that her diagnosis was not even correct. I had brought my cat in to see her on a Tuesday afternoon and found him to be more uncomfortable and less well Wednesday upon returning from work. I took him to the ER vet immediately and called TCP first thing Thursday AM to follow-up with her. Not only would I have expected a follow up call from my Tuesday afternoon visit, to see how my cat was progressing - but I would have expected a follow-up call once the ER report was received (which I confirmed that it was). When I spoke with her staff member, Ruth, who was very gentle and kind and wonderful on the phone - I was told that Thursdays were very busy days and that the Dr. would call me back for sure that day - but that it might be late. If nothing else she would email me. We confirmed and re-confirmed phone numbers, email addresses and the like - and I was again promised a call. I never got one. By the time late Thursday evening came around - and the call that I expected to get late never came, I was upset. Not only was this poor business, but extremely poor care for my cat. I'd taken the day off to care for him and to be available for any appointments - and made no progress at all that day. Even if this was a very busy surgery day - why wasn't it standard practice to have time set aside for the Dr to make follow-up calls and provide continuing care? If she is going to be the only vet at the practice (which she is), a relief vet needs to be utilized on busy days - or time needs to be blocked in order to provide decent care. I called Jewell Animal Hospital first thing Friday morning and got Gus in to see the vets that see my other cats. It was most unfortunate that I needed to take another day off, delay my cat's relief and care and spend an additional $130 - just to see another vet because TCP was too busy or too disorganized. In the end, though, Gus got gentle (NO SCREAMING) and compassionate care and is on his way to being well. In fact, the vet and the vet tech even got on the floor to examine him - and didn't exacerbate his pain - as this is where he was most comfortable. One full week after my initial visit to TCP, I received a call from Dr. Coughlin - who just now found my message from Thursday morning. To her credit, she did apologize for losing the message - but I am still very unhappy with the care that my cats received there, how they were handled and how the office is run. My experience there was quite dissatisfying. The only friendly and helpful staff person was Ruth - who was quite kind. Even the receptionist seems annoyed to see you and your cat . . . every time I was there. Bottom line - this was a terrible experience for me and for my cats. These people are top notch and really care about your pet. They were very nice, My cat had a swollen cheek from an infected tooth. They got her in promptly were EXCELLENT handling her and she has a little but of a temper. Im going back in a few weeks were there going to do a thorough cleaning and extraction if need be..
