I had ordered a great kilt from here some time ago, before they had updated their website to what it is now. As an aside, this exemplifies why you should not even bother leaving a review on the seller's own website, as ever since they updated to the latest version, all of their reviews, including the negative ones (of which there were plenty), have disappeared with the old website. In any event, there was a sign-up bonus/coupon at the time for such-and-such off your order -- which, for an item as expensive as the great kilt, amount to almost forty dollars off the order. I input the coupon, proceed with the checkout, and wait for the item. When I am checking my bank account one day while waiting for the item to arrive, however, I notice that the discount amount was not actually deducted in spite of that showing up on the online order invoice, i.e. in spite of the invoice's declaration, they still charged me the full amount. So when I finally get the item (for which the paper invoice that came with it also indicated a discount that was not actually applied), I gave them a call and pointed that out. I was quite amazed, though, that guy on the other end was immediately combative, at first denying such a thing happened and trying to dismiss me with "well, you just got screwed on that one, buddy." What the f---? You give people a code for a discount, the person applies as indicated to the order, it shows up both on the online and paper invoice which can be used as evidence of being overcharged to the bank if I wanted to file a merchant dispute -- and you try to take the tack that I am somehow at fault for their muddling things up or being outright dishonest/hoping I wouldn't notice the discount wasn't applied? That was quite incredible, though I assume this person must have realised rather shortly they were in the wrong on all accounts and by the end of it said I would get a refund in the amount indicated. That shows they aren't completely dishonest, but they need to either make sure someone who isn't 'roiding handles their customer service, and/or hopefully they improved their book-keeping. In any case, that treatment insured that was the one and only item I would ever purchase from them, which is something of a shame since the kilt itself wasn't half-bad. read more

While visiting Minneapolis - I decided I wanted to visit The Celtic Croft - I've been receiving their mail order catalog for several years now - the catalog contains a wide variety of Celtic goods: Irish, Scottish, Welsh, and more. I e-mailed them to ask if I needed an appointment. Turns out their location is in a residential neighborhood - but they operate the business out of a large building out back behind their house. They responded promptly and told me to call to let them know when I would be coming by - which I did. I went over about 5:00 pm. I met Lori, the woman who does the custom Kilt work. I ended up ordering two Kilts: the first - an Ancient Kilt in the MacKay Ancient Tartan - and a Phillabeg Kilt in the Meath County Tartan - an Irish Tartan. Lori measured me for the customization of the Kilts. I also opted for something called "Cheater Pleats" where they actually sew the pleats into the Kilt. I already have a Great Kilt - nine yards of fabric - and you have to hand pleat it each time you go to wear it - which is a bit of a hassle. The Celtic Croft web site describes the Phillabeg as follows: "Modern, tailored kilts are often referred to incorrectly as "little kilts". The little kilt, or Phillabeg, or feilidh-beag, is actually an earlier predecessor of today's modern kilt. Unlike a modern kilt, it is not a tailored garment. It is simply a length of tartan about 25" wide and 4-6 yds long, loosely bunched or pleated, and held at the waist with a belt. It is worn to about the middle of the knee, just like any other kilt. One of the things that makes a Phillabeg distinctive, is that it has a few inches of tartan flapping over the belt." It will be 6-8 weeks before I receive the Ancient Kilt and a bit later than that for the Phillabeg. I paid 50% for the two Kilts and will pay the remainder upon receipt of the Kilts. Do not use for rental. My husband and FIL ordered their kilts months before our wedding. Husband wanted to see if he could change sizes ordered a couple weeks before, he talked to kaurina (sp?) the shipping manager two days before everything shipped. She assured the right sixes would be updated and shipped. WRONG SIZES delivered the week of our wedding. My FIL's didn't fit either! Long story short they both had to run around 2 days before the wedding looking for other outfits to make work for our wedding. So disappointing for your big day especially when you spend close to $500 for a RENTAL. read more

Back in April, 2015 The Celtic Croft became the "Officially Licensed Store for OUTLANDER The Series Kilts, Tartans, and Tartan Products". Being a big fan of the show I preordered a Outlander Stole in the Fraser Tartan with the understanding that the items would be available in June. June came and NOTHING, not a word from the Celtic Croft. I had to contact them and on June 9th I was informed "We are excepting an exact date this week". (yes that is how their spelt expecting). End of July came NOTHING and again I sent them an email and on July 27th I finally got some information as to what hold up was. I understand these items were being imported and made elsewhere and that they have no control over that. What I don't understand is their LACK OF COMMUNICATION - they had no problem collecting money from me IMMEDIATELY when I place the preorder. It is not unreasonable to keep your customers informed. To my surprise the stole was shipped and it arrived yesterday. I cant tell you how disappointed I am with the with the stole. Their description indicates the stole would measures 27" x 70" - the one I got was barely 20" x 63.5". First and last purchase from me. So be very careful if you decide to do business with them. My continuing saga continues with Celtic Crofts. They indicated they would refund me for the item I purchased once received. It was received 10 days ago and I have yet to see a penny - next stop is the BBB. read more

Ordered a specific kilt for our wedding over 8 weeks ago. Our wedding is in two weeks and Celtic Croft just called today to tell us they are not sure they can get the kilt. Why on earth did they wait until two weeks before our wedding to tell us this - they had over 8 weeks to get our order completed. The front desk staff person was rude, argumentative, unprofessional and unkind and could have cared less that this was devastating news to us. Our entire wedding is designed around the Mackenzie Modern Tartan. A substitution is not possible. We are Mackenzie, we wear Mackenzie. The entire wedding is designed around the Mackenzie Tartan. Table clothes, sashes, bows, decorations, floral arrangements, etc. Blackwatch and all other kilts will not match - our wedding photos will be ruined. After almost 4 months, my order STILL isn't right.... I ordered a canvas utility kilt from Celtic Croft in May. It arrived very promptly, in about 4 weeks- but it was the wrong style and a full inch+ shorte than ordered. This was mid June. I spoke to Kaurina, the manager/ owner(?), and was assured that the correct product and size would be ordered, and a priority rush for production. 4 weeks later- nothing. Called Kaurina again, and am told she hasn't heard from (no answers to phone or email messages) in over a month. He's dropped off the face of the planet- but she's still receiving occasional shipmets from him. Afew more weeks go by, call again. They had to re submit my order the first week of August- so it hadn't even been in the que for 10+ weeks. Once it was actually ordered, it arrived in a couple weeks- very promptly. Unfortunately, the kilt maker apparently cannot read a tape measure to save his life- this one, while the right product, is over 2 inches too long. I immediately emailed Kaurina- and silence for over 10 days. Nothing, no response. As an aside, Steve, the guy who answers the phone, has no information, no product knowledge, and no ability to make a decision. Hes an answering service. He also is quick to lose his temper when faced with problems that exceed his ability to address.... Ive NEVER had a service rep scream, literally at the top of his voice, at me over the phone.... Summation- the kilt I finally received is of decent quality and materials at the price point. Its fully knife pleated, and well sewn. The service I've received is completely sub par. No excuse for a seller to offer products from a single source maker she can't even communicate with. No excuse not to have more than one production source. No excuse for the maker to screw up the measurements twice. No excuse for the owner not to respond to being informed of the second error... So, 2 stars for the quality of the product, 0 stars for service and buying experience.... read more

The kilt is BEAUTIFUL and the men will certainly look handsome. However, beware TERRIBLE customer service! If you encounter Steven hang up and try to get someone else on the phone. The final FORGOTTEN pieces of my brother's wedding attire arrived the day of the wedding with virtually no apology. I'm convinced the four kilts would not have arrived at all if we hadn't contacted them a week before the wedding. Not to mention that they were mailed to the incorrect address and we were lied to by multiple people. Not worth the hassle in my opinion. read more

Awful awful awful. I tried to order a Yule gift for my husband and to this day I have not received my order. It would seem the person who does the embroidery had to take a vacation. For months. It is now the end of March. I have not been refunded my money or received my order. No phone call or anything. I will never order from these people again. They rip you off. Buyer beware. They were great, I rented a full formal rig, (Prince Charlie jacket with vest, kilt hose, kilt pin, sporran formal shirt including the keep the kilt option. Everything arrived in plenty of time and looked amazing, and while the customer service makes it pretty obvious that it's a small operation, they were all wonderful and very friendly. Every time I need something in Celtic attire I can just hop down the road and go to Celtic Croft. With the plethora of t shirts to other jilting needs. I ordered a Robertson tartan kilt 2 years ago around thanksgiving hoping to get it before Christmas. While I was told it may not be done before then I was told they would try to get it done. I received my kilt the day before Christmas and was able to wear it to church for Christmas service. Lori has always been helpful every time we go. From helping my wife get an earisade (spelling?) to helping my then 6month now 18month son his first kilt. 10/10 will continue to shop here read more

I don't even know where to start. I would suggest not doing business with Celtic Croft because their customers do not come first, and the customer service is absolutely sub-par. I placed my Formal Kilt Rental with Celtic Croft 4 weeks before a wedding I was standing up in. When I placed my order, I added in a note, to contact me before processing me because I was concerned about the sizes. I hadn't received any communication after the order was processed and I received a confirmation email. 3 weeks went by, and still no contact. 1 week before the wedding, I received a call from Celtic Croft telling me to call them back, as I missed their phone call. When I called back, I learned that they were unable to fulfill my order. Almost all of the pieces of the Kilt Rental I ordered was not in their current inventory. The slight ounce of customer service they did have was to offer to piece together a completely different kilt style and then charge me additional fees. I was of course completely taken back, surprised, enraged and panicked! What the hell was I suppose to do now?! I asked immediately why was I not contacted 3-4 weeks ago, when I originally placed my order. I asked, why did Celtic Croft take my money, 3-4 weeks ago, and then 1 week before the wedding call to tell me they can't place my order. Excuse after excuse, with absolute no concern for the customers needs, placing blame on all sorts of events that could have been prevented, such as hiring additional staff during busy or stressful time periods, lead me to ultimately demand a full refund and look else where for my business. After the initial phone call, all other phone calls I placed went to voicemail, and no one ever reached back out to me. No one returned any emails. Nothing. I did have to call my credit card company finally to place a fraud alert on this particular charge. I am sure these are really great people, however, if you live a fast paced life, and expect a certain level of professionalism and forethought, please choose a different company to rent or buy kilts! read more

I needed a kilt and assorted accessories for a renaissance festival costume (That, and I've always wanted a kilt!) and this place was recommended to me by my brother in law. I found them to be very helpful and knowledgeable about what to wear and how to wear it. (I probably would have figured out all the buckles myself, but would most likely have worn it backwards) Their selection was good, their staff quite friendly and patient, and they had most of what I needed in stock. I ended up dropping about $450 on an entire getup that I'm very much looking forward to wearing. The only reason I didn't give this five stars is that they must have been going through some kind of inventory process in the back because I felt like I was being a little rushed. When I arrived I had to ring the doorbell and wait about a minute before someone came to open it, and during the fitting and selection process they seemed a bit distracted and really just wanted me to leave. Never rude or impatient, but they definitely seemed to have their mind on something else. This, in the end, was small potatoes as I walked out of there with exactly what I needed (They even offered to cut the fringe off of the boots!) and I will certainly go back if I need something else Celtic in my life. read more

I have ordered from them many, many times online now and must say it doesn't get better than them. I ordered a full Scottish setup (kilt, sporran, boots, extra sporran chain, belt, buckle, etc). After being totally screwed over on a custom kilt from "got-kilt" (was told ten weeks and at week 17 was that THEY may receive it in shop by week 21 and that put me at 4 weeks into our Faire season) I was in a panic that I had everything but my kilt two weeks prior to the Renaissance Faire here in Kentucky. I called Celtic Croft and informed them of my conundrum. I am a big guy and was worried I would not be able to get a kilt that'd fit me so close to my deadline. The lady on the phone (who I have dealt with several times now and is absolutely amazing to work with) went and checked her stock to find a kilt for me. Unfortunately they only had the acrylic kilts in my size in stock in a different tartan (Which is no biggie at all. Nightwatch is as good as Campbell when in a time of need) than I needed at the time but I went ahead and got it and placed a custom order through them. I ordered it on a Friday not expecting it until later the following week, but it arrived that Monday. Now I not only have this kilt but another being made in what I was wanting before I got screwed over. So now with just over a week and some change until the Faire starts I have gone from panicking over not having my kilt to being able to relax. I was a little hesitant towards the acrylic kilt but I must say I am wearing it while typing this and it is astoundingly comfortable and nice looking. I have yet to have a bad experience with this company. I depended on Celtic croft to supply sashes for my wedding that takes place in July of this year. In January, I physically went to the store and received a sample of my clans tartan that needed to be ordered. I placed the order and about 8 weeks later the wrong tartan was sent to me. I sent it back in March waited for the proper order to arrive. It is June 1st and my tartan is still on order. I called 3 times in between and was told that someone would call back to let me know what was happening. My fiancé called 2 times and was told the same thing. Nobody ever bothered to return my calls and today, when I called to cancel, Steve was unapologetic and rude. I would recommend avoiding this place of business read more

We got 6 full setups from them for my wedding, and they seriously came through. Two of them had to be special ordered due to size (a 58" waist and a 61" waist) for two of my friends, and they got it together extremely quick. I did call them once or twice and they always knew who I was and were very friendly. We all got our kilts and everything else a week before the wedding (as they said we would) and I realized that while my friend is a 4-5XL, he has a 2xl neck size. We realized they had sent a 2X tux shirt with his attire about 6 days before the wedding. We called them and they said they'd fix it and the next day a brand new 5XL tux shirt showed up. It seriously looked like they went out and bought it and next day shipped it. And when we went to ship it out, we realized that they had included shipping slips for the returns, so all we had to do was box everything back up in the original boxes and slap the return slips on and drop them off at the UPS. tl:dr version: a complete and utter pleasure to deal with the people at Celtic Croft. We bought a custom Kilt and also ordered a formal Kilt rental (for all other items) for my husband for a formal event along with a matching Rosette for me. The kilt and rental arrived the week of the event (despite being ordered months ago) without the matching Rosette (and without the correct size and color of kilt hose/socks) I had ordered. I called and Steve assured me that they would mail the black kilt hose and Rosette that day so that I would receive it in time for my event. The Rosette arrived. The special Socks needed did not. The event is the next day. I called again and Steve offered to send the socks in the mail. I told him I was concerned about them arriving in time on a Saturday when it was currently 1:40pm on a Friday, especially since the last time he assured me the socks would be sent, they were not. Plus, the mail is not the most reliable. I suggested perhaps due to the two screw-ups, someone could drop the socks off at my husband's office. He laughed at me and said they are just a pair of socks. Finally after talking to Lori I received an apology and an attempt to make things right. My husband still had to to drive to their office 20 miles out of his way of a Friday to get the socks. Not impressed. read more
