    Broccolini was cold
    Tamara S.

This was my first visit to The Charles! Very nice ambiance and atmosphere. Our server was very nice, sorry I can't remember her name. We had a large party of 15 on Easter. Anyways, the food was very good. I had lampchops, mashed potatoes, broccolini. A little disappointed the broccoli nice was cold, and the lamp chop could have used a little more flavor. The mashed potatoes was definitely on point with taste. I did have the crab dip and calamari for appetizers and both were very tasty. I recommend trying them. Overall, I had a great experience. I will definitely recommend and will be returning.

I had never been here for heard of this place before. I needed a couple of drinks and one of my friends told me to meet her here. This was our first experience! Everything was good... now I probably wouldn't order the "chargrilled oysters" I am a suckered for the Down South version, but anywho. I was full off the Brussels Sprouts, nachos, and the couple of oysters that we didn't need to order anything else. Although I wanted to order a taco. Everything looked amazing as I watched other food coming out. I would go back. Our waiters were great and the customer service was too.

Have been wanting to try here for some time and finally stopped. Was here for brunch and tried a peach Bellini, crab cake sandwich with a side ceasar salad. Everything tasted amazing! Service was great - super sweet hostess and our server was a doll and very attentive. We sat outside and it was lovely. Cant wait to go back!

Service was a lot slower than the last time, we had to ask the host who our service was after we waited 15 minutes or longer. The food was excellent as always except the risotto, it was too mushy and some grains were not cooked but the Brussels Sprouts, Crabs Croquets; and Apple Mule were the BEST i ever had.

Passed by this spot a few times and today was a good day to swing in. There's plenty of space and seating. Dine in the back or grab a seat at the bar. We were seated quickly and our waitress was friendly throughout our experience. It's 5 o'clock somewhere so why not start with some spirits and drinks. You can't go wrong with an old fashioned. Food, the steak and eggs and the shrimp and grits both great choices. The steak was cooked to the perfect temperature sitting on eggs and home fries. The shrimp and grits perfect ratio, with an amazing sauce.

Our experience at The Charles is always amazing! We love it here. When we talk about dinner plans the first words out of our children's mouths' are almost always "The Charles!" In a child's chant. I attribute this to the attentive staff who always make them feel special and are cognizant of our needs. The staff are friendly, warm, and create a true sense of human connection. The atmosphere (bar area) is clean, inviting, and has a relaxed vibe. I have tried almost everything on the menu and my go too is the short ribs, but the chicken piccata is very flavorful and scrumptious. My reviews are based on my opinion and perspective. While I read other reviews to get an idea of atmosphere ambience, they do not influence my perspective. In my opinion, if you want a great experience and a good evening out, you can't go wrong with The Charles.

Traveled out of Town for our anniversary and was looking for a fine dining restaurant to enjoy our special evening. Drove from Colonial Beach, VA for this evening celebration. Made a reservation for a Wednesday dinner and made a comment of our special night. There is off street parking in a so so lot on side and in back of building. Was greeted immediately at door and seated promptly. Looking at menu online and reading reviews I thought this was going to be a more intimate dining experience. Sorry to saw nothing romantic about this place at all even with my note during reservation. Stephanie greeted us with water and asked if there were questions about menu or if we wanted something else to drink and gave us a few more minutes to review menu. I decided to start with a bowl of Cream of Crab soup and ordered a glass of Pinot Grigio. My wife ordered the Duck Breast and I ordered the Pan Seared Rockfish. The presentation of soup was different as a bowl with a small clump of greens and crab meat was served, then the server poured the creamy soup base in circular motion around greens to float them. Soup had good flavor with small portions of crab and the wilted greens. Then came our main dishes. The duck was present on top of diced sweet potato and swiss chard with a glaze over top. The rockfish was presented over polenta with side of roasted tomato, zucchini, sweet potato. Both plates had good portions of protein and vegetable. As we were full from our meals, we ordered one cheesecake to go. The attire for this location is all over place. We saw ladys walk in with leggins', customers wearing everyday tee shirts and hoodies, the hostess wore very faded blue jeans and tennis shoes. Website pictures present a different idea of restaurant. Now the service was good from Stephanie and food presentation and flavor was good. The value of meal/service is right on.

04/05/25 Wife and I stopped in for a late lunch early dinner, they have outside tables, a dining room and a bar area we sat at the bar. There were a couple of bartenders they gave us water and menus pretty quick, and took our drink orders I had the old fashion with house bourbon. We looked over the menu everything looked really good, we decided on the kale salad to start and cheese burgers with fried for a meal. The salad was excellent as well was the cheese burgers. The guy that fixed my old fashion did a great job their house bourbon was really good. How ever there was one issue that we didn't care for, the guy bartending was constantly running his hands through his hair. He would start making a drink out ice in the shaker run his hand threw his hair pour all the liquors in the shatter for a drink pour it in a glass then run his hands threw his hair. Even when he wasn't doing anything just standing behind the bar he would have to run his hands in his hair. He never washed them after putting his hand through his hair. If you can't keep your hair out of his face he needs to put on a hair net or tie his hair in a pony tail. He's a really nice guy great to talk with but even while talking with him he's putting his hand through his hair. Hopefully someone stops him. We ordered dessert to take home, we had the chefs cheesecake with a cherry topping. I had it later in the evening the cheesecake had a very good gram cracker crust and the cheese was very creamy the cherries were excellent they weren't out of a can. Would have given 5 stars except for the bartender running his hands through his hair constantly. Looking forward to returning to try something different.

It was our first time visiting The Charles. My wife and I had a 7pm RSVP and they seated us early. The ambience, use of space as a coffee shop/country store and spirits tasting we both loved. We ordered crab dip for our appetizer and my wife had an espresso martini while I had an old fashion. While waiting for our food there was a "hiccup" of sorts in the dining area and our server along with the manager came by to ensure us that our experience was great none the less. For our entrees I ordered the short rib and my wife the lamb chops. My wife's food came first and I was later told they were out of short ribs. I was disappointed they were out but selected the steak and shrimp as an alternative. Everything was delicious and we'll definitely be coming back in the future. The manager was attentive, the staff was polite and prompt. 10 out of 10! Thank you all for the experience!

This was my first time I came to this restaurant. I was here for a private event but I sat at the bar until the party arrived. The Happy Hour menu was great and the food and drinks on the HH menu was everything! The parking is right in from but make sure to get there early. I would definitely be there again!

We visited from a late breakfast and sat in the bar section, which was empty other than us. They do also have a dinning room section, as well as a patio section; and I think the in and out of the patio section has caused quite a few flies to make it inside. We had the breakfast plate and the biscuits & sausage gravy. The only thing I really liked was the cheddar biscuits. Afterwards we walked over to The Market, which was amazing, and we got a small discount from there for dinning at The Charles first. The Market at The Charles is really what keeps me coming back!

I had just come from a hair appointment down the street and on my way back to my car, I noticed Sangria advertised on the mini sandwich board outside. I'm a HUGE fan of a glass of fruity Sangria on a hot day! The fact that it was Happy Hour with $5 glasses made it even easier to draw me inside!! When I explained this was my first visit, they explained the Curio concept, the various areas for sitting, sipping and gathering as well as the Curio Card process. They even had a small but really intriguing menu of various snacks, from charcuterie to flatbread and even dessert. The menu changes a couple times a month, making me want to plan more visits! The staff offered me sips of each so I could decide on a Sangria flavor. Despite not being a Moscato fan, I chose the Moscato Mule Sangria. It was light, refreshing and had the Moscow Mule flavors with the added sweetness of Moscato wine. I wandered into the cellar to explore more wine offerings and wound up running into fellow educators and their friends I had never met. We chatted like we were catching up and laughed about shared birthdays and teaching!! They invited me to hang with them, but I had to get home for Dog Mom Duty. We exchanged numbers so we could plan another "run-in" downtown SOON! If you haven't visited Curio, I HIGHLY recommend it. Bring a friend, or plan on making a few. Next time, I'll be ordering food with my wine and lingering much longer! Thanks for a great end to my week. See y'all soon! Cheers!

I haven't tried the food here yet, but I'll definitely be coming back for the cinnamon spiced sangria and the mulled wine (must be bought from the bar. Not available on tap.) A must for all wine lovers.

Located just off the bustle of King St., Brut sits unassumingly among the Old Town townhomes. You could easily walk past, and not notice it at all. But, if you've dialed in Brut as your destination, be prepared to step in to an oenophile's wet dream. The establishment is both a bottle shop and a wine bar. Every bottle in the joint is carefully curated. There is no junk...no fluff...no quid to subsidize quo...all excellence, from any country or region your heart may desire. Do your Christmas shopping here, for sure. That shopping is going to make you thirsty, so pony up to the small but well appointed bar. Its no easy thing to find a bar with a good "wine by the glass" list, but Brut manages that task with ease. From your sauvignon blancs, through the pinots, to full bodied reds...take a flight of fancy, and walk home well fortified. Since the bar is small, and seats are at a premium, the owner Dustin does a masterful job of weeding out the Riff-raff. Trust me when I say that watching it is far better than TV. I cannot recommend this cool little spot more highly. Maybe I'll see ya there sometime!

It's a little pricey relative to places like Verre wine bar in Courthouse or area Vineyards. I noticed they had the Valravn cab sauv and it was A $20 glass but I have seen it for several dollars less at Verre and elsewhere. However, these were really large pours. So it may be their philosophy to have someone order/pay once and get a lot then having to constantly go back for more. Which is great if you value simplicity but less so if you want variety. I also didn't see flight options, though maybe I missed them. All in all it came out to $83 for 2 glasses of red wine and a cheese plate with 5 cheeses. However they brought bread refills - not sure if it's just that the plate was priced for unlimited bread or if we were being charged for more bread each time and that is what increased the price. Service was a little lax. Again not a bad thing, depends on your preference. When we got their attention they were on it. It resulted in being completely unrushed and unpressured which I appreciate. But my friend was starving and under those conditions we would have liked someone to come take our food order sooner. Vibe is chill. I wouldn't say it's as sexy as others do. When we arrived the lights were fairly bright and then they turned them down and started putting out candles while we were there so that may have been it. That was around 7 or 8 if you are gaming this out for a date. We were the 6pm crowd so maybe they were intentionally going for a less sexy vibe for the benefit of the after work drinks with friends types. I don't recall music. Note also they seem to really focus on imported wines more so than local. I don't thibk there was any local VA wine on the menu. All in all, if you need a wine place in the area then it is totally worth stopping by, especially if you like the specific approach described above. Is it a wine bar I would go out of my way for given that there are a bunch in different neighborhoods around DC? Probably not unless I was specifically looking for this kind of imported wine menu or large pours. This is a no if you are specifically looking for flights or to otherwise try a bunch of different wines.

Both times we've gone, it was during their happy hour, which runs until 7 pm, and we stuck to the special menu. We started with the Era 75 and a glass in the Spanish , red that was on "wine o' clock", we also ordered the shrimp and avocado tostini's and truffle fries. The wine was ok it wasn't as full bodied as I expected it to be but my partner really like the era75. The crostini's were a 10/10 and the truffle fries were a miss as I think they could have been cooked for a few more minutes. The servers switched at some point so we got someone new and I think she was only person there. We both ordered the linguine with the first server but the second came right before our dishes came and we shared we wanted a white to pair with the pasta. She seemed a little less knowledgeable but she made a suggestion that I liked the Alvarinho. The wine didn't come out, I had to stop eating and wait. She came back after about 12-15 minutes to check on us and I shared we still had not received the wine. Another person came to check on us I'm not sure who he was but possibly the owner. The linguine was well prepared although a bit salty for my liking. We were warned about the spice level but it wasn't spicy in my opinion. Overall the dish was good. For dessert my partner ordered cheesecake. The reason I'm giving a 4 is because of the slow service after the servers switched out and because the kitchen became quite smoky a few times and I smelt like smoke when we left. For food, I ordered the City Dock Pizza and my friend ordered the Beef Bolognese. The City Dock Pizza was good - thinner crust but plenty of flavor. The Beef Bolognese was a lighter colored sauce than I anticipated. The pasta was good and the sauce was also good but not what I would consider a traditional Bolognese. We went to sixty vines on the recommendation of someone in our party who apparently has been to…read moreseveral other locations and could not say enough good things about it, and I can see why! The food was fantastic, everyone had a great time finding fantastic wines on the wine list, and the service was fantastic! We went on a fairly balmy night in DC, and they had a lot of the space opened to the outside and it was absolutely lovely. It is a beautiful, well-designed space. Thank you, Sixty Vines for a great experience!

I came here in search of a delicious frosé after hearing it was one of the best spots for one to…read moreand it definitely lived up to the hype. They also make an excellent Hugo Spritz. The space is large, bright, and airy, with plenty of seating and beautiful natural light streaming through the floor-to-ceiling windows. Our waitress, Kelsey (I believe that was her name), was friendly, attentive, and personable, which made the experience even better. The drink menu offers an impressive selection of wines and cocktails, so there's something for just about everyone. The food was equally enjoyable. We ordered one of the charcuterie boards, which was generous and satisfying, and I appreciated that the menu features plenty of shareable dishes that are perfect for groups or a casual outing. Overall, it's a great spot for drinks, light bites, and catching up with friends. I'd happily return.
