Opened at 11am , walked in and was sat immediately! Service and staff are always delightful! Food came out quick! Always love a restaurant that gives you a free basket of bread! Since I was in the area and wanted something light for inch and coffee I decided on The Cheddar Box. Although was close to 12:30 on Saturday and they close at 3 pm there was a wait for a table. Once seated I was able to order coffee, the trifecta including chicken salad, tuna salad and a hot cup of clam chowder. I treated myself to a rich and flavorful piece of chocolate cake to end the meal. Great service and good food as always. read more

I stopped in today for lunch around 1:00 pm. The parking lot was full but I am managed to find a spot. When you walk in the door there is a sign in sheet that you put your name in. There were three ahead of me. There is no one to greet you. There are two benches to sit on while waiting. They were occupied so I stood up and waited with a few other people. I waited for about 25 minutes. I looked over the menu to decide if I wanted to wait. This was my first time there. I wanted to try the place out so I waited. The server was obviously in a hurry and walked up to me and said what would you like to drink. I ordered tea, when she brought it back I was ready to order. I was by myself . I decided to get cornbread salad and half a sandwich. The sandwich was Benedictine, bacon and Mayo. The salad was brought out first and looked very good! It was average. I didn't care for the ranch dressing on top. It was too tangy for my liking. The Benedictine sandwich was decent but the bacon was too salty. It was better than Panera Bread and I think it was a little cheaper. After I paid I went to the deli side and bought a piece of derby pie, peanut butter chocolate chip pie and a piece of coconut cake. I took the desserts to my daughter's house for us to try. The derby pie ( chocolate, pecan pie) was not good. It tasted like it had been sitting uncovered in the refrigerator too long. The chocolate chip peanut butter pie, was nothing special. By the time I got home the whipped cream had already melted. I had no desire to taste the coconut cake, but my daughter said it was very good! The sandwiches aren't on any specialty bread. They use Pepperidge Farm. The price point was good, but I was underwhelmed. The cake and pies that they sell at Paul's Fruit Market next door are better! read more

My family and I stopped in for lunch, and it seemed to be pretty busy inside. We had to wait around 10 minutes before we got seated while the employee (who I am assuming acts as both cashier and hostess) checked out the long line of people leaving. We were seated at one of their many booths lining the wall. Our waitress greeted us shortly after. She was nice and timely so that was a positive. I ordered the Trifecta - your choice of any three pastas, salads, soups, or sides. I chose the Primavera pasta salad, the tuna salad, and their soup special (I believe it was a chicken veggie soup). The Primavera pasta salad stated that it had broccoli in it but when I got it, there was one little piece of broccoli. It was incorporated into the salad like I assumed. The tuna salad was OK, but nothing special and not much flavor. Others ordered the chicken salad and the honey pecan chicken salad. I tried both and I gotta say they were just eh... I was really hoping that they would be tastier! We popped over to the bakery side to take a look at their goods over there. I want to start off by saying the here food deserves 4 stars. The service is what got me this time around. We walked in, we're immediately greeted and told to sit where we would like. The person who sat us took our drink orders and brought us our drinks, then literally left the building. That's when things got bad. No one ever came back to our table, after sitting there 5 minutes we had to grab another waitress, she wasn't apologetic or anything but did take our order for us. Things were good again, we got our food quickly and as previously stated it was very good. My husband got a soup and 1/2 sandwich combo with the tomato artichoke soup and a chicken salad sandwich. The soup was so rich and flavorful, I was immediately jealous. I got a curry chicken salad sandwich and it was heaven. Curry chicken salad sounds weird but trust me it's delicious. I highly recommended giving it a go. Especially if you like grapes in your chicken salad. We were both finished eating, had be for at least 10 minutes but again no waitresses to be found. The waitress that took our order was busy with another customer. It was only when someone came to take the dirty plates away that we were asked if we needed anything. They weren't short staffed and it wasn't that busy so not sure what the disconnect was. Overall wasn't the best service but I'd go back for the food and to give them another shot. read more

Me and my Mother go frequently for lunch. It is my favorite tomato soup ever... and I HATE tomatoes a lot of the time. I love the east meets west sandwich as well. The service is normally good.. the restaurant is really busy when it is lunch time so there is often a wait. I love the ambiance it feels like the gossip spot of all the old ladies of the town. The Cheddar Box has been around forever and with good reason - it's the perfect place for lunch. It's much bigger on the inside than it looks and that's with half of building reserved for pick up and prepared items (pro tip: their ham salad is absolutely delicious.) This time around, I came with my mom for lunch on a Saturday. We were seated immediately and our server was super nice and efficient. I'm really confused by the people who gave this low stars! The service has always been incredible and the food is to die for. I literally went here two days in a row with my husband. My picture is of the tomato soup because that's my all time favorite part. This soup is out of this world!! The flavors are just *chefs kiss* and it goes great with the honey pecan chicken salad. The chicken salad is just the right amount in the half // half combination meal. I'd definitely recommend this place. It has been years since I've been to The Cheddar Box. Other than a new paint color on the walls, maybe some artwork, it was just as I remember it - but this isn't a bad thing. I wanted the Louvall's Favorite, a roast beef and lettuce sandwich on your choice of bread. Is the roast beef good - yes, but it's the stilton mayonnaise and henry bains sauce that steals the show. The sandwich would be beyond boring without it. For around $10, the sandwich comes with Sun Chips and pickle slice. Another favorite and unique item is their sweet tea. It's flavored with orange slices. The orange doesn't overtake it, only enhances. Before you leave ask for a to go cup. Get your money's worth! We arrived after noon and were seated right away. This is a lunch spot ideal for groups of 2-4 people. A larger one may wait for a bit. I was pleased not to wait. Back in the day if you didn't get here by 11:30a, it was a guarantee you'd have to put your name on the list. These days Middletown has several more food options. On the other side of the restaurant is the deli. While lunch is over by 4p, the deli stays open until 7p so you have time to pick up dinner after work. Several items on the lunch menu can be found at the deli. We left with the honey pecan chicken salad and had it for dinner. It was delicious. I also spotted several desserts and need a reason to pick up the Bluegrass pie. The deli was busy, and had a much hectic vibe as compared to the restaurant. It makes it hard to check out the selections, especially with staff shouting "excuse me" every couple of minutes. They have a couple of tables on this side for eating but I wouldn't recommend it. This is a cute cafe for sure and a popular lunch hour spot. It is split in half, with one area being the deli and the other being the "dine in" area. I love the atmosphere and concept of it, but it didn't exactly win me over either. It was obvious that Cheddar Box gets VERY busy here during lunch hour, since they are usually open until around 3. I wanted to stop in during my break one day because I had seen this place pop up on Yelp every now and then, and so I had to try it out for myself. I was originally planning on dining in, but it was so busy I decided to play it safe and go through the deli so I could get back to work on time. They have quite a lot to choose from - sandwiches, salads, desserts - you name it. I ordered the East Meets West sandwich, which included cheese, lettuce, some chipotle-type mayo and smoked turkey. I'll start with the positive and say that it was great, however I was pretty upset with myself that I had just paid $15 for a deli sandwich... It also originally came with Sun Chips, and even though I asked for a fruit cup instead, she gave me a fruit cup and sun chips, and the fruit cup added some unnecessary dollars on the receipt as well. I don't think Cheddar Box is bad, in fact it was very lovely and had great service - I just don't think it's worth THAT much for an "A little better than average sandwich" with an additional charge for any other side besides chips. read more

Crowded deli/lunch spot that is larger than you think and has a bigger menu than you would expect. They have a lot of workers behind the counter and they seem to fall over each other. I'm sure it makes it difficult when customers are on an honor system. As you order food to eat then go to counter and tell them what you're order was after finishing your meal. They have a full service side on one half that closes at 3. Being my first time being here I ordered at counter and walked to other side to sit. It was 250pm. I assume it was the laziness of the waitress that made her rudeness come out when she said you need to go sit on other side since you ordered over there. On the other side there like 3 places to sit and they were all full. So I guess she wanted me to stand up and eat. Besides the laziness and rudeness of that particular Waitress the east to west turkey sandwich I ordered was very tasty. Food was fresh and delicious. Prices were moderate to high (8-10 a sandwich). My boyfriend is from New Orleans and he has made me a fan!! The side where you order is small and quaint and perfect to sit alone! The cafe is on the other side, perfect for larger groups. Ordering a sandwich was extremely difficult! They have everything from curry chicken salad to pastrami sandwiches! The names are clever and quite adorable for their items... H20, Say Cheese, It Ain't Easy Being Green, Sweet Dreams, and many more! How cute!! After much deliberation, I went with the It Ain't Easy Being Green and the famous strawberry shortcake! I received my meal in less than five minutes and had to take the proper photo op- even though I was drooling and ready to dig in!!! It Ain't Easy Being Green is a house made Benedictine sad with made with BACON, sprouts, and lettuce. It comes with a bag of chips and pickles!! Flavor blast is what I noticed when I bit into this little slice of green! It was juicy and sweet yet tangy. By far, the best Benedictine I have ever consumed! The bacon was crisp and easy to bite into! The entire piece didn't slip off like many other restaurants when taking a bite! I always enjoy having the full flavor effect. As for the strawberry shortcake, it was fresh and delicious! I am not the largest fan of sweet or strawberry shortcake. Shortcake to be exact... But I know where to come when I want a bite! Soup, salads and pastas. If you're looking to dine in, that's the basic run down of the menu. There is a restaurant to the right and a deli/country store to the left. I say country store, but that's only because with it's chicken salads and cheese spreads to-go, it reminds me some of the country stores I've visited lately. Over in the deli area, they have the desserts and behind the case, large bowls of cold pastas, chicken salads and more. Besides the desserts and a few other options, you purchase each option in this area by the pound. They also have prepackaged cheese spreads and dips. I was a bit perplexed since the prepackaged items were also priced by the pound, but the containers were much under a pound. I wanted to pick up a container of beer cheese or any other option and know what it's going to cost. Instead, I was left to wonder how much the container/prepackaged options actually cost. I looked back and several people were in line at the deli line, so I just sat back down and waited on my meal. It is in a strip mall in Middletown and we were in the area today, looking for a late lunch spot, only to find out that most places in the area close at 2 and reopen at dinner time. So, I appreciated the fact that they're open at this rare time. I was torn between deciding between a sandwich or salad. The deciding factor against the sandwich option, was that they come with Sun Chips and I hate Sun Chips. So, I ordered the World Famous Chicken Salad from the Homemade Chicken Salads options. The menu describes it as "on a bed of mixed greens". This led me to believe that it was a salad topped with chicken salad, but it was actually 3 (hefty sized I must add) scoops of chicken salad on five or so leafs of greens. I can't knock them too much for my perception of the description. But I will say that I didn't care for the taste of the chicken salad. Chicken, mayo and diced celery... pretty bland. Thankfully the salt and pepper grinders were available on the table. My dining companion ordered the H20 sandwich on marble rye bread. Simple. Not a lot of meat. When I moved to Louisville from Lexington, I was looking for a place to replace my favorite take-home deli, The Mousetrap. I was really hoping Cheddar Box would be the place, but it was kind of an odd experience. There are two doors, with one room with seating and one with a counter, the deli, and a few tables. To order from the deli, you order, they bring the food, and then you pay after by telling the cashier what you had, which seemed kind of weird that I didn't get a ticket or something to hand to them. The service getting my food was fast, but the wait at the counter to pay took quite a while. The other thing that was odd was an employee that was awkwardly mean to younger staff the entire time I was in there. I'm guessing she may have been the manager, but it was slightly uncomfortable how she was talking to the employees. Weirdness aside, I liked the food. The house salad was really good and refreshing. My half pimento cheese sandwich wasn't bad, but the pimento cheese wasn't the best I've had. I did see several salads and sides I'd love to try. The cheddar pecan spread, derby pasta salad, and sweet chili chicken caught my eye. The prices are a little high for me, though. My half sandwich and half salad was $11 and some change, and I had a very simple sandwich and salad and water to drink. If I come back, it may be to grab a pound of a spread or salad, but not sure I'll come back for a sit-down lunch. read more

I was really excited to eat here after not having been for several years, but was sadly disappointed. I will say that the restaurant looks super cute as always and there was a wide menu selection and all the food looked amazing! Most of the employees were helpful and polite! The issue for me at first was the prices, which seem excessive for the portion sizes for a majority of the items... but then when I ate my food, I was even more disappointed. I got honey chicken salad slider sandwiches and the derby pasta salad and didn't really care for either one... my family liked their food okay but nobody was blown away. This had become a nice lunch sandwich shop about 5-6 years ago, I went twice since the covid pandemic, and the food, cleanliness, has really gone bad. My wife and I waited about 45 minutes in line to be seated, which we decided to wait because last time we had to get back to work. I had the New Yorker deli, and was so disappointed. It was so dry I could not swallow, and my wife had soup and tuna salad, soup was canned not homemade, and the tuna was again very dry and pasty. The table had sticky stuff on the surface as did the menu's. I asked them to clean it and sure enough a wet dirty towel just smearing around what was on there. It wasn't very quick, and I certainly didn't go light on my order. But I'm sitting here in a bonafide drug-induced sugar coma. You see, friends, I got the chocolate ecstacy cake. It's like a drug to me. I can't quit it and I really don't want to! This cake is rich, moist and the frosting is a creamy chocolate dream! Today I went with the 1/2 soup and 1/2 sandwich for my meal. Sometimes I change it up a little and do a 1/2 sandwich and 1/2 salad. Their salads are so, so good! The Derby pasta salad is my favorite! The "Say Cheese" pimento cheese is my favorite sandwich. I have been a customer at The Cheddar Box for over 13 years and I will continue to feed my habit as long as they are operating!
