Horrible experience. Showed up to pick up food I ordered and a member of "management" was being extremely rude to a patron. The lady was explaining that she hadn't gotten her food yet and due to how poorly she was treated she wanted a refund for the food she hadn't received. As many have stated, Chicken Barn has been having issues for some time. But certain things; the filet sandwich, coleslaw, valley sauce, keep long-time Foster Farm fans coming back in spite of it. Sadly, I think something has happened. Perhaps a management or food supply change, but most of what we tried was completely different than the traditional recipes which were purchased from FF when Chicken Barn took over many years ago. The coleslaw and potato salad have always been made with the valley and mustard sauces, respectively; today these were completely different salads. The coleslaw tastes like it was made with a vinegar dressing, plus it was very dry and really discolored (which usually means old). The potato salad was a completely different salad and was just ok. The filet sandwich was big and on a different roll, but it fell apart and was made wrong despite us being asked three times by the cashier. The breading seemed either light or slightly different on spuds and nuggets, but the nuggets tasted off (perhaps freezer burn?). Spuds were very little and skinny although I actually prefer that. Valley sauce tasted the same although very runny, at least both cups were filled to the top which never occurs (most are usually 1/2 full). I truly hope this was a fluke but for now, I won't be going back anytime soon. read more

I wish I could give this place 0 stars. Pulled up to the window to order. They asked me if i would like to hear their special of the day. I said yes. They told me that it was the teriyaki bowl with fresh vegetables and chicken on rice. I ordered two. They asked me if I would like all of the vegetables and explain to me which ones were on there and I said yes, even the cabbage. And I drove around to the pick up window and waited and waited. Finally somebody opens the window and says, sorry but the vegetables are going to take 15 minutes - would you like to wait or would you like just rice and chicken? Well dang. Why did you offer the special at a drive-through that's not ready? Not having any time, hence fast food, I said fine. The rice was mushy, got robbed on the half empty teriyaki sauce. I have been eating at The Chicken Barn (formerly Foster Farms) since the 1980s, when I was a wee child. Even though the name has changed, the recipe is still the same. Same great chicken, same awesome spuds. I always get the 5 piece nugget meal with spuds, biscuit, and drink whenever I'm in town (since I've moved elsewhere). I recently discovered that the Saturday daily special lets you order 5 piece nuggets a la carte and you get a free side, so that saved me a bit of money since I didn't need a drink and biscuit. The nuggets are far superior than any fast food chain because they are actual pieces of chicken instead of small, processed patties. The interior hasn't changed much, if at all, since the 80s, but who cares? I come here for the food and the inside brings me back to my childhood. read more

Our family has loved Chicken barn for decades (even before the name change). I'm so sad that it has gone down hill. Not only are prices ridiculously high (20 nuggets, a large spud (8) l, 4 biscuits and 10 sauces $48), but the food is tasteless. My mustard relish sauce is watery and tangy. We sadly won't be returning and are sad that food we loved so much isn't the same. I was shocked that there weren't any cars there at lunchtime, but now I know why. read more

Not a great food spot. I love fried chicken sandwiches and this place just didn't deliver. Too much mayo and the chicken wasn't all put together on the inside of the breading. I ate barely half. Hi good evening, I had a very upsetting experience with your drive thru this evening. I pulled up to the drive thru menu, there are no signs, attendant mentioned they were closing in 7min, I asked if full menu was available, he said "no thighs, or breast" I asked for teriyaki bowl, he said they were out." I said thank you I will just leave. I had to wait till I got to the window because there were three cars behind me. When I got to the window, I asked for a manager, he came to the window I asked him to please put up signage that they were closing early in the future because I would have avoided getting in line if I seen a sign since I work in 30 min for night shift. He said we do have signs I said where, he said here on the window. I said your signs should be on drive thru area, I'm not able to see a sign covered by letters in a window from drive thru area. He was rude faced, all he repeated was "okay. Okay" there were also three cars behind which two also left for the same reason. Roy and Amy expect high quality service and food from their employees towards their customers. I have come twice in the last week and the first time I ordered a 7pc nugget meal with double mash potatoes and gravy instead of the drink with valley and bbq and they forgot my biscuit. I went through the drive thru again today and ordered the same order as last time along with another 7pc nugget meal with double spuds valley and bbq and two extra valley and two extra bbq. The drive thru person failed to repeat the order and messed up charging me for 1 7pc nugget meal and 1 5pc nugget meal and they did not give us our extra sauces. Being as I'm an ex-employee I am very upset with the service and not receiving all of my items. read more

This is a very small chain, as it turns out, with only three locations. And, though it is fast food, they prepare it freshly on site. There are a number of options for sides. The salads are great. The reason I turned to the Yelposphere today is that we were offered outstanding service by Amy and Sierra, who were serving food. Wish I could give 0 stars. My review has been deleted off the Google reviews twice, so I'm posting this here, where Yelp will make sure my review stays. It was my very first time at this establishment. Every single thing I tried to order through the drive thru I was asked to wait while they checked if they had it and everything was "unavailable". Staff should know what they have on hand. I ordered 1 Supreme Combo and 1 Fillet combo. The supreme wasn't a supreme. It was the exact same thing as my "fillet" combo; just chicken, which was COLD around the edges, mayo and a slice of tomato. Both sandwiches were this way. The mac and cheese was the worst thing I've ever had. It tasted like plain bland cooked noodles. The cashier did not provide utensils so I guess I was supposed to eat it with my hands?? Sodas were both flat and nasty. The only good thing that came out of this were the "spuds". I will not be back to the Chicken Barn, ever. When I pulled back in after realising how terrible EVERYTHING was, I was told I couldn't be helped because they were closing. Wish I would have drove across town and paid a little more at KFC, at least then my order would have been correct, and delicious. Buyer beware. read more

Sadly this location remains inconsistent in how they run the business and the quality of food and service they provide. When someone orders a two piece order you expect to get two pieces of chicken. The posted Thursday Special is a two piece (leg and thigh) with spuds and a drink. It used to be under $6 but now is $6.19 before tax. Today my order only had one piece of chicken (a thigh) with the spuds--- where is my other piece? They had added in a biscuit and a thimbleful of butter, but this isn't what I wanted or what should have come with the order. How hard is it to count to 2? I only get 30 minutes for lunch and I don't have time to go back and beg for what I paid for. And for crying out loud can you get some better utensils! Extremely disappointed! My husband and I have lived in Modesto for 50 plus years. We ate at Foster Farms and when it changed names to Chicken Barn, we continued our long customer relation with them. The food was always excellent. Today was a special day since our son is returning to college for his last semester. We asked him to chose his favorite place to eat and of course it was Chicken Barn. We drove to Oakdale Rd and found out that location was closed and informed by a flyer at the drive thru Chicken Barn on McHenry was open. So off we went to McHenry Village. The inside was closed due to remodeling so we went through the drive thru. We were surprised to see the large increase in price. We ordered our usual 30 piece nugget meal with spuds and mashed potatoes. The total came to $56.09! When we reached the window we were surprised at how quickly our food came. (Payment received and the food was passed out the window.) We normally waited 15 minutes and never minded because you were always getting fresh food. We left and while driving down Briggsmore we decided to eat a spud. It was cold and completely dry. Before we reached Coffee Rd we tried the chicken and it was exactly the same, dry and cold. At Coffee we made a legal U-turn and drove right back to the drive thru and requested a refund. Maybe 8 minutes total. We were shown a sign...bla bla bla no refunds. We were told they were under new management and they don't offer refunds that they would remake the food. We honestly didn't even need to think about it, we would rather take an almost 60 dollar hit than eat here. The quality has gone to Sh#*! DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY FOLKS! Same thing with the iced tea. Sorry we just ran out of iced tea. What kind of chicken place runs out of chicken sandwiches 2 hours before they close? Service was great, was given extra spuds before closing . Usually order a 2 or 3 piece combo w/spuds, chicken was crispy & juicy!!
