If I could leave 0 stars I would. In this local economy you would think a business would try to keep every customer, but sadly not Chicken Barn. We live in the Bay Area and have always made it a point to eat at Chicken Barn on McHenry when we come into town. However, this will be the LAST time we ever come back. We went through the drive thru and ordered the 20 nugget special with a side of mashed potatoes (since you can't substitute a side) and 4 additional sauces. Our total was a little over $45. When we got to my daughters house (8 min away) I knew the moment I opened the bag that the chicken was not fresh at ALL. The chicken was dark brown and tasted like old grease. The biscuits where literally hard like hockey pucks, the batter on the spuds was literally falling off and to top it off they changed the recipe of their gravy to some kind of white tasteless goop. I understand that it wasn't going to be piping hot but the whole things was barely lukewarm. I called immediately and spoke with the asst/manager and firstly explained to him the taste of the chicken and how I thought it was cooked twice and he said that was not the case, but would be from the oil needing changing and it was scheduled for tomorrow. I said that is something that should have been told to me when I ordered. I proceeded to tell him the biscuits were so hard that I could bang it against the counter so he could hear and he said there was no need. I asked if I could get a discount or a credit for the future and he said no. The policy is I can get a replacement within 24 hrs only with a receipt. I told him the receipt was no issue, but I lived out of town and that would do me no good. He proceeded to say that was their policy, so I asked to speak to the manager and he said he was the manager or assistant. I asked for someone above him or could I talk to the owner and he said that was the owners policy, I continued to talk and he said I needed to stop talking over him (totally unprofessional) I even was like (hey, don't need to talk like that) when I asked for his name he hung up on me! I called back and said "you hung up on me and I need your name" he said he wasn't going to give me his name and hung up again! I called again and I rang and rang. I hung up and called again and he answered and said if I did not stop calling he would block my number which he did after he hung up on me again. I ended up calling from my daughter's phone and a woman answered and I told her that I will be leaving a yelp review and how unprofessional the man handled the situation. It's just sad that after all these years of having come here we will never come back again! The owner was always there and made coming here great, but no more. The food and customer service is completely awful. If you do decide to come here do yourself a favor and ask them when the oil was changed otherwise be prepared to have an awful, awful meal. Always fresh....fast....and friendly service. Great chicken nuggets and chicken sandwiches. The chicken filets are white meat and are very juicy. The spuds are crispy and delicious dipped in their tangy BBQ sauce. I always eat at the McHenry location ONLY! I'm all for supporting local businesses The last 3 times I was let down ,it's pretty bad when you bite your chicken sandwhich only to feel a hard rubbery spot as if the chicken is not fully thawed or if the quality of the chicken is questionable!! I ordered a chicken sandwich combo and when I got back to eat it, it looked normal at first. Then I took my first bite and I could see the chicken was spotted gray in color and unusual rubbery parts. The chicken nuggets were good portions, crunchy, and had great flavor, the spuds are a Chicken Barn classic, the biscuit was fluffy and buttery, and the honey mustard was creamy and delicious! My partner got a side of mac and cheese and it is a must-try! Overall, nice environment to dine in and enjoy. The workers were nice and helpful, and the food was ready fairly quick!! I use to really like their chicken. The last several times aI've gone they their drive thru the chicken nuggets are room temperature. This is a pattern. I'm sure the staff there eat hot food. Writing this review because there are so many negative one star reviews recently, so I drove on over to find out if beloved chicken barn was doomed for failure -- I disagree with the negative prognosis! I got the five piece chicken nugget meal with a side of spuds, biscuit, soda, paid extra to have a total of three Valley sauce and just to check up on quality now that the place switched ownership- got the supreme battered chicken breast sandwich. $20.03 total. Nuggets and spuds are still flavorful. Tasted fresh but i bought it at 11 AM so it really should be! Chicken wasn't super dry like others said. I feel like they're bigger chunks than they were from the last owners. There is a slight difference in the batter, almost like they've added cornmeal where it wasn't before. Kind of a different type of chewiness to it. Hard to explain. But I think it really may be cornmeal. I used to always buy cheesy spuds and I see it's no longer on the menu. I probably didn't need all that fake cheese anyways. Lol Biscuit was top notch!!! Yum! The bun for the sandwich was great! Instead of a hamburger bun, it's more of an artisan roll that they cut in half so it is a little too thick for the size of chicken and ratio to veggies. Nice sweet flavor! I liked the bread. The chicken breast patty was a little bit dry, not inedible, just not juicy, however I enjoyed the flavor. The lettuce and the tomato were the issue. Wilted shredded lettuce with rust and the smallest misshapen tomato slice I've ever had. If the bread was smaller, this single tomato wouldn't have been an issue. I prefer leafed lettuce. Man I use to love coming here and getting the nuggets... But it is no longer the same per my last few visits... the last few times going i've tried holding onto some hope. The nuggets are dry, biscuits taste different than before and have been really dry or rock hard. Valley sauce is WAY thicker than before not a fan of it anymore... I know they had an owner change and was said the recipes are to remain the same for the most part but it doesn't quite feel that way... Overall just don't feel like the price is worth the food anymore like it once was before... I love fried chicken and I'm always looking for a great place to find some but was very disappointed when I found this place. Let's start with the size of the wings they're very small and it seems like they went to a local food store outlet to purchase them these are not the retail quality wings you would expect from a place that only serves chicken. We took hours to go and it was served in plain paper bags, if they are going for that retro feel they missed the mark on that one too. I ordered Mac-n- cheese for my side and it was very bland but tasted like food service product not made in-house. My husband ordered the potato wedges he got 4 of them, not much of a side order. Lastly, I ordered spicy chicken and had the sauces given to me on the side. Both the hot sauce and the barbecue sauce taste as if it's something off a store shelf or ordered as a food service product nothing special there. I had to return to get eating utensils and napkins. Store is grimy and portions are extremely small. I have been coming to Chicken Barn since it used to be Foster Farms. The first time I ate at the Chicken Barn, I ordered the 5pc Nugget meal, and years later I still order that same meal. Their house dipping sauce called " Valley Sauce" is a perfect compliment to the chicken nuggets, a side of spuds. The part is the meal and sauce tasted the same 20 years, as it tastes in 2021. I eat there every time I am going North on Highway 99. I have grown ip eating at Chicken Barn, I hope to continue that habit in the future. The guy taking our order was kinda rude, wouldn't sell me the special that was posted on the menu board and when we were waiting for our order I saw him eating food next to the girl preparing our food. I am a big fan of this location. I ordered a large amount of chicken for an office thing and the crew at the Chicken Barn made me look great. 50 pieces of chicken and 50 nuggets w all the sides and everything was ready on time and the chicken and spuds were hot and crispy. I ordered it the day before and the staff made arrangements to make sure it would be ready to pick up the next day before lunch. But, if I wanted healthy, I would have gone to Village Health Foods, which happens to be in this same shopping center. For chrisakes. You have to live a little.
