Waitress seemed anxious to get us out of there. She never offered us drink refills and asked how the food was before we even took a bite. Then while we were still eating asked us if we were ready for the ticket . When we got here we asked about sitting on the patio and were told only if we ordered our food to go. So we sat inside. As we were leaving we asked if we could sit on the patio and were told only if we ordered again. Food was not as good as before and the mashed potatoes looked like they were old. And good service and welcoming atmosphere was definitely lacking. Would not recommend. read more

My family and I have come here numerous times now, the first time a few years ago was great, but since then, the service has been nothing but terrible! The managers on duty, we have encountered two. An EXTREMELY rude blonde woman and a man that seemed to not care about anything.. the managers are VERY rude and so are a majority of the staff. This can be a busy place, which is okay, but they need to start quoting people on how long the WAIT FOR FOOD is, not just the wait for the table. We waited an hour for our table and another hour and 40 minutes for our food to arrive AFTER ordering, spending a total of over 3 hours there from start to finish. The managers are very condescending and are not willing to keep their new customers happy nor are they are interested in keeping the business they currently have. I gave them one star and that is for the food and the food only. It is usually great, although the chicken can be extremely salty sometimes. read more

I kept driving and driving and feeling like I was lost and probably mistaken, and then I was there.... at The Chicken! I met my mom and a group of her colleagues for dinner tonight. Everybody pretty much got chicken baskets with various sides. We also got some spicy shrimp and jalapeño deviled eggs for the table. My fave was the deviled eggs to be honest, but we were all pretty darn impressed with how juicy and tasty that spicy chicken was!! It's right along the trail and would have been fun to bike to, in another life where I become a bicyclist. For now, it's just worth a short drive! read more

We went this afternoon for an early appetizer and drink and were very disappointed. We have been before and everything was great but today was another story. They were out of 2 of the 5 wines they offer. We ordered the chicken nachos and they were smothered in so much lukewarm cheese sauce you couldn't even taste or see anything else. Not appetizing at all! Our server was great but the food was poor and drinks you could get anywhere. Wouldn't make this trip again anytime soon. read more

Really good food with awesome service (coming from a retail manager). They had a 30 min wait but we choose to sat outside. Murphy made sure we were helped and were sat in a shady spot. Here is a restaurant where the humble chicken is the star! You will find a small menu which celebrates this bird fried, breasted, Nashville hot, and chicken salad. Our group of four tried different menu items and we all enjoyed our dishes. So, when the mood for chicken and cold drinks strikes you go and enjoy. Tough night at The Chicken - uncooked broccoli, uncooked chicken and no flavor on the burger. Beer was delicious, but beer is delicious. My broccoli was literally raw (not steamed) and it took 20 more minutes to even get it back. When the chicken finally returned cooked, it wasn't what we had ordered (wings instead of breasts, etc.). The decor seems like a win win for the casual dining experience and/or bike ride stop, but aside from friendly service this place was slow with below average food. That being said, it's newly opened with good ownership. Multiple staff members came to check on us and this could merely be some growing pains on a busy Saturday night. Total bust on this night, but possible to imagine a victory down the road. read more

I never give one star .....Des Moines NEEDs a good fried chicken restaurant! The only thing I won't complain about is the ranch dressing I ordered to give the broasted chicken flavor. Don't serve canned corn in Iowa, just don't! It even looked liked brownish corn. Don't serve the biscuit on the corn. The corn taste gets in the biscuit which is dry and I mean DRY. The potatoes had a good flavor but were dry. The Nashville hot was not bad but don't fool yourself, that is NOT Nashville hot fried chicken. You shouldn't order steamed broccoli at a fried chicken restaurant but my husband is trying to be healthy ish. Chewy broccoli is not good. No pictures needed. Awesome spot off the beaten path, or bike path as it were. Popular spot for cyclists, families, couples, brunch, friends, and a casual date. Great patio area with ample seating. Indoor sitting is minimal, but the bar is full service and open seating. My husband and I sat at the bar so we didn't have to wait as it was Sunday at brunch time. The bartender was super nice and personable. They have a great variety of beers on tap. The chicken strips are amazing and the food portions are massive. I loved the atmosphere inside and out, right off the Great Western trail, I already can't wait to go back. Wings were not heavy battered, which I love about these, but could've used more sauce. Just a tad dry but I liked it. Can't wait to go back for broasted chicken! Two things I noticed. 1) they have good quality napkins. I hate restaurants that specialize in finger foods but give you crappy napkins. 2) no wet wipes. For a finger food place, little disappointed. read more

I really wanted to like this place because I do enjoy some good broasted chicken. All these 5 star reviews leads me to believe they have never had good chicken before. Where do I start, the chicken breading was very hard, not typically of the light breading that a good broasted piece of fried chicken would have. The chicken quality wasn't fresh and it was just breading and bones. The leg I got was so small it was borderline a hot wing lol. I agree with the other reviews their biscuit is horrible and the corn is low quality frozen corn. There are two places in town with much better broasted chicken, I highly recommend going there instead. read more

I've been here a few times. The idea is simple enough - chicken, following the name. While the chicken itself is perfectly fine and choices are predominately chicken strip-based, they seem to have a problem with over cooking things. We went to the chicken on a Friday night at 8pm. There were two of us and no wait. We started with fried cheese curds. The curds had a very gritty batter on them, it was cornmeal of some kind but wasn't incorporated super well. The cheese curds were not cooked long enough so they weren't as melty as desired and the outside wasn't as crispy as one would expect. I ordered the Nashville hot chicken sliders with fries and my husband ordered the bang bang chicken tacos. The chicken itself was delicious. Spicy and moist. However the sides left so much to be desired. My fries were weird. They were hot like they were fresh but had the texture of old fries that had been sitting there. I told our server that I thought that they were old and he told us that's just how their fries are... so I asked for something else instead. I got the potato salad and it was very good. The chicken tacos came with Spanish rice. The rice had clearly been made much earlier in the day and my husband was served burnt pieces from the bottom of the pan. He didn't eat the rice. The tacos were good and the sauces that came with were also very good. Our server was great and the bartender was very accommodating when my husband wanted to find a certain football game on tv. We will try the chicken again but I hope in the meantime they tweak their sides (and get better fries). It's right off of the bike trial which will be a nice pit stop! read more

Definitely NOT worth the wait & money!!! Tried on a Sunday afternoon & the wait was an hour & twenty minutes to get seated, so we had to leave. Went on a Tuesday evening. Arrived at 6:40, didn't get food until 8:20. Service was meh. The seasoning & breading on the chicken strips was good, but the chicken was dry. The broasted chicken was burnt & dry. The biscuits dry & flavorless. 4 out of 5 people at our table didn't like the loaded Mac & cheese. (Its the one thing that I thought was great.) French fries were meh. Mashed potatoes & gravy & corn were inedible. Save yourself time & money & go elsewhere. read more

Nice opening with a few rough edges to be worked on. I had a beer and it was cold and fresh. It was also served in less than two minutes which was great. Ordered the deviled eggs. They did not have much flavor. I'm hoping they re look at that recipe. Had the chicken fingers with the Nashville sauce and they were hot and cooked to perfection. Id like some more flavor their also. I think this is going to be a great addition to the south side of Des Moines and Norwalk/Cumming area. OMG The Chicken is amazing! The strip basket was my choice and these chicken strips are MASSIVE! So tender and juicy and the biscuits that came with make a perfect sandwich. The strip basket is also served with a slice of white bread and a side of your choice. A tad on the spendy side but the food is worth it! Our waiter was funny and engaging, drink always topped off and he was very attentive to what our kiddos might need before asking. read more

Stopped here to check this place as friends had told me the food is great. They are not kidding! The food was fantastic and the chicken is to die for. This place used to be called Bambino's but it was closed and the whole inside has been remodeled with a rustic look and corrugated tin sheets with barn boards. I will definitely be back to check the chicken out because I didn't try the chicken today due to time constraints. DW got chicken sliders and there was enough we could have split and still had enough. The special today was Grazianos sausage sandwich and that is what I ordered. It was huge on a hoagie bun with peppers, onions and cheese. It was fantastic as well. You have got to try this place! read more

Please take my three stars with a grain of salt -- I got a grilled Buffalo chicken salad, which isn't the house speciality. I thought the salad was lackluster and could have been plated better for the consumer. The chicken was fine, not dry or over-cooked. Did a nice ride this morning from Waterworks park to Cummings and back. The Chicken opened at 9am so it was an easy decision to stop and have breakfast on the patio. The entire place has been gutted and is all brand new. The patio is huge and has shade sails up for when the weather is hot. The waitress told us that the first few weeks they are doing breakfast burritos only for breakfast just until they know what type of crowds they may have. Our server was awesome and the breakfast burrito was fresh and really good. We can't wait until they are doing a full breakfast menu.....we will be back on the trail and back for breakfast for sure!! read more

9 of us went to dinner to celebrate my mother in law's birthday. The food was good the service was awful! Waitress had a bad attitide from the start and acted annoyed with us. The were not busy at all byw.. After we were done eating, we had a cookie cake(that had been sitting on the table since we arrived) and sang, then asked for a knife and some plates.. Her response was.."Well sorry you cant have any food brought from the outside..Thats The Owners rules not mine I just work here" So we left after spending over $200.00 . To my knowledge for one a cake is not food its a dessert which they dont sell so Im pretty sure thats not a RULE!! If it is Ive never heard such a thing!! The finest establishments let you bring in desserts for a party!! You just lost good custoners The Chicken because of your so called rules and your rude server Lauren !! Have tried this place several times and just am not impressed with the service or food. The Broasted Chicken is over rated in my opinion. The flavor just isn't there and it's been so physically hot and that doesn't help. The wait times I have gotten were almost always underestimated by a lot. The time I had the Chicken sandwich it was good, the onion rings were very good. The Grinder Po' Boy and Italian Sausage Sandwiches were both good. read more

The first two times we went there the food was pretty good, the service was a little slow but I was expecting it because they were new. The 3rd time we walked in about 6:20 pm and were told they closed 5 minutes prior due to the snow. It wasn't that bad out and they could have waited for the dinner rush to end but still, I understood. Tonight I checked before going, they are open until 10 on Fridays. We get there about 9, wait 15 minutes before getting our drink order taken and being told that they are only serving pizzas as they closed down their fryers 5 minutes prior. If I wanted pizza I would have stayed in Norwalk! They are called the chicken. It isn't unreasonable to expect that they actually have chicken to serve! read more
