Went here because Yelp said it was a cigar lounge and people recommended it. When I got there I was informed there was a town ordinance or law or whatever - that didn't allow smoking inside. I said ok, no worries- can I see a food menu as I saw online that you served food. I was told kitchen never reopened after COVID. I asked for a drink menu and was told they can make anything I want but no menu. Staff was friendly but I didn't really get to enjoy anything as I left after that third strike. I don't understand. What's the goal? Is this a cigar bar? Is it a tobacco shop that only sells cigars but additionally sells alcohol? But patrons can't smoke there, but you can enjoy alcohol? You can buy the cigar and smoke it inside the Totally Nude strip club next door? Are they the same business? I still have no clue what the business model is. The bartender has to go into the humidor with you and babysit. The other patrons knock on the humidor door while bitching they want a drink. The bartender complains the entire time that she has to babysit you. The place is darker inside than the strip club. You can't see your hand in front of your own face. They have a picture of a naked lady smoking a cigar inside a place where you can't smoke a cigar, next door to place with naked ladies where you can smoke your cigar. Wow, how have I lived in KC for 9 years and never been in this joint? I have no idea! I'm strictly rating for its bar functions (have not been there for food). I stopped here late one night following a wedding reception. I was able to quickly (and cheaply) obtain a draft beer. My friends and I found a table in the back and sat. I adore the combination of an old Italian place and dive bar atmosphere. The bathrooms are just as I would expect: in need of some serious upkeep and lacking latches. No surprises here. What was a delightful surprise was Al. What a crooner. It was so much fun watching him sing. The humidor is also legit. I'll be back again! read more

So I'm on a baseball trip with a 4 other dudes and of course 1 of the guys wanted to go to a strip club. I didn't really want to go to the strip club but I'm going with the flow. Well we get there and a bunch of rednecks walk out wearing mullets and Nascar apparel saying "19.00 dollar cover charge and no alcohol? F#$k that noise". I agreed with said rednecks. The Cigar box was next door so we went in. I was expecting the strip club crowd to be in here getting drunk before heading over for their lap dances. Wrong! I opened the door and walked into what looked like a AARP convention. No one was under 70 at the front of the place. Some guy was on stage looking like a glittery leprechaun covering Sinatra songs. He even stopped mid song to shake our hands and thanked us for coming over the mike. I was very confused as to what was happening. We found seats at the back of the bar for us all and ordered drinks. I got an Old Fashioned made with Bulliet bourbon and it was made well and fast. The bartenders were in their late 20's or 30's i'd say and were extremely friendly and on the spot with service all night. I looked around and in the front of the bar I saw a walk in humidor with cigars and in the back was a bunch of tables with white tables clothes and people dressed up for dinner. This was not at all what I expected. I sat in here for 4 hours and during that time I watched the Pelicans playoff game, watched my buddy grind on a 70 year old woman while singing along with the lounge singer to Marvin gay songs, drank a shit load of shots that this local guy bought because he wanted to show KC hospitality, and I drank a shit load of Old Fashioneds. As the night grew later, younger people started coming in but the older peeps never left and it got packed. 2 of my buddies bailed because they had an early flight, my other 2 buddies were finally drunk enough to head to the strip club but I stayed. Sure I got stuck with the tab but it honestly was way cheaper than I expected. The Old Fashioneds were only 6.00 and the rest of their drinks weren't bad either. When the bartender saw that my buddies left, she made us both shots and gave me a free Old Fashioned. I have no idea how to categorize this place but it was a phenomenally great unexpected time. This is one of those Kansas City places that might as well be from Mars. It is very intimate and seems to share a backroom/patrons/owners (?) with the strip club next door. It is located very close the Sprint Center and surely experienced a lot more attention when the shiny entertainment district popped up a few doors down. On a busy night, don't be surprised to see the place become very social although it also functions as a supper club of sorts in the evening. I get that many might come here to laugh at people or whatever, but there is no denying this can be a very fun place with a lot of kansas city character. There is a rich, man's man decor, a boatload of interesting characters, cigar smoke wafting and surely a lot of crazy stories to be heard at the cigar box. Pretty much a KC original. read more

I LOVE the Cigar box!! I had been here several times as a teen with family and didn't really remember it but I am sure glad as an adult I finally made it back! I went here with a few friends had some nice wine and a light dinner, the smell when you walked in was magnificent, it reminded me of walking into my Nonni's kitchen on Sunday...yummmm The crowd was very diverse and welcoming :-) I ordered the portobello sand which on ciabatta it was fabulous LOVED it!!! Who can go wrong with a huge portobello mushroom, eggplant, sauteed onions and green pepper??? Not this Italian girl that was right up my Alley! Before the smoking ordinance became really tough, and there was a cop standing inside the place, the owner himself would help you pick out a cigar from the humidor and light up with you. Alas now, the joy of smoking inside the Cigar Box is gone. The Cigar Box is that cousin that borrows money and never pays it back, the friend that borrows your car and brings it back wrecked ("it wasn't already like that???"), your favorite neighbor that has family from out of town staying with them.. in an RV parked in the driveway, the co-worker friend that steals your cheez-its. You get the point. For me, The Cigar Box is a place that once played a part in an evening where I literally had to rebuild what happened from Yelp check-ins (still missing two hours - true story). At least one benefit to not working in a traditional office is that when friends from work decide to go out for lunch on a Friday, it's probably going to be a place like The Cigar Box. And it's probably going to be a two hour lunch. And it's probably going to include cocktails. So when we organized a little going away lunch for a friend and co-worker. A dozen advertising people descended on The Cigar Box and we were clearly marked immediately. Most everyone ordered drinks which varied between beer and Manhattans. Everyone ordered food. I ordered a 10" veggie pizza with peppers, red onions, and zucchini and the server didn't flinch - good news. The food came pretty quickly for being such a large order - or maybe we got lost in the cocktails. Now that I think about it, maybe that's where the missing two hours of my life went. The lovable jerk part of The Cigar Box is when the second round of drinks started showing up. No one ordered a second round. But they came. And then the third round showed up too. So note that finishing your drink triggers another. We also learned when we got the bill that the third round of drinks we didn't explicitly ask for were doubles. Jerk. But by this time, if you drink it, you pretty much ordered it. Every order was right and every drink, ordered or not, was great. The server split the bill and never complained. Sure, The Cigar Box, like your cousin, friend, neighbor and co-worker, has it's eccentricities. In a world where Hooter's and Applebee's are actually things though, I thank my lucky stars for places like this - and you should too. read more

Honestly? The Cigar Box is the freaking Twilight Zone. It is so zany and quirky and dirty and delightful. I'm not sure words can do Al justice. All I can do is say his zipped-down-to-there black top with sequins all over it last night was the most amazing fashion choice I've seen in a while. An amazing place in a Latta ways. It is definitely a time piece. You'll see all kinds of people in there, many of whom look like stereotypical mobsters but probably aren't. Let's just say that you'll see guys in track suits and gold chains smoking cigars and holding wads of cash. They have a humidor on the premises which will quickly become obsolete with the advent of KC' smoking ban. But the real appeal of the Cigar Box is, and should always be Mr. Al Latta. Al Latta is hilarious, impressive, sad and noble all at the same time. He makes dirty jokes, mocks his own songs while singing them, takes frequent breaks for booze and cigarettes, all while wearing an aging crooner's costume that is literally coming apart at the seams. He loves the ladies and often gets them involved in the singing. Don't miss this guy. read more

The only remaining place in downtown that gives you 2 for 1 drinks for happy hour, that includes beer - probably. Can you actually stand straight up and walk out of a happy hour here, probably not. Well, you might have more will power than me. During the day, you have Pauly. He is sixty or so. He is also a riot, I think he missed his calling as a comedian. He will keep you laughing and loves the ladies. During the night, we have Al Latta. He sings, he does impersonations, and he also loves the ladies. The food here is great. The lunch prices are amazing. The dinner menu is so tasty. It is full of olive oils, basil, and sauces. Elastic pants are a good idea. read more

I'll start off that if I would rate this place five stars if the very entertaining Al Latta was the only consideration, and is the only reason this is not a one star review. We thoroughly enjoyed his Karaoke stylings! We visited on a Saturday night specifically to enjoy Al, drinks and conversation with friends. We did not order food so can't comment there. However, I'll say that the management needs to call Bar Rescue and see if John Taffer can fix the mess behind that bar. No drink specials. I had to provide drink recipes to the bartender. What we did get was overpriced and watered down. If you do go, stick to something bottled or on tap. Hopefully they can open a bottle and pull a lever. We will definitely return to see Al again but will avoid the bar. read more

Welcome to the time warp! Once you step into this, you will immediately be sent back to the 70s. Here, the drink prices are good but the food is fair. Each thing I have tasted has been unmemorable (which can both be a good and bad thing). Throughout your evening, Al will sing big band/swing Karaoke. Be careful though, if you stay too long, you will hear "Tiny Bubbles", "New York, New York" and "Kansas City" a good handful of times. This place seems like it's been here forever, and as others have mentioned, there is definitely a "family' vibe here in the Italian sense of the word (seriously, it's a bit like stepping into a Scorcese movie - if the mobsters traveled in time to hang out with recent college grads) George is the hulking proprietor of the humidor in the front, don't mess with him, and take his advice, he won't steer you wrong. Al Latta is the performer, (and it's NOT karaoke, as George gruffly reprimanded me) and I wouldn't be surprised if his outrageous toupee was made out of cheese. He sings mostly lounge favorites and occasioanally sits at the bar while someone else takes the mike and sings along to the backing tracks. This sometimes devolves into Latta groping women during group singalongs, beware. This place strikes me as "The Dresden" of KC, as in the movie "Swingers" , with Latta serving as their Marty and Elaine - he's not nearly as talented, which I know is frightening. But go anyway, especially for a nitecap. They are open till 3 am, and you can smoke your cigars inside - so be prepared for a LATE, smoky night. read more

Good selection of cigars in their walk in humidor. Other then that, you are not allowed to smoke at the location, nor do they have an outside patio to smoke and drink cocktails. I actually don't even know why this bar is called the Cigar Box since you can't even enjoy your cigars. Staff here was also pretty sketchy, we ended up buying about 10 cigars here, and the person who charged us did not charge us the indicated price. They not only up charged us, they charged us excess tax, very interesting since we paid cash. I'm sure it went into her pocket, not the bars. read more

Live singer to sing oldies, strong drinks, a full menu when the kitchen is open, and a fun atmosphere. If you don't see what you want on the drink menu, tell the bartender what you are hankering for, and they'll make you something close to it. Everyone here is extremely nice, it's not odd to see people dancing together even though they have never met prior. read more

KC's Best kept secret. Cheap drinks and good eats. I ate ribs at Joes and Jacks, but neither beat this place. Walking in I never guessed the food would be that good - from pasta to blackened catfish sandwich, it was all good. The place has a little mob feel to it, but I liked it. Al Latta kept that vibe alive. He's entertaining. Felt like I was in Chicago. Everyone was friendly and the hot bartender made sitting at the bar extremely pleasant. My friends and I were dropping by on a trip to Kansas City from Wichita and decided to check out the Cigar Box. Hoping for an experience much like I would get from my hometown Mort's. The atmosphere was pleasant. Quite a few people around having fun, with a Sinatra singer belting out tunes and letting other people join in from time to time. We felt somewhat misled however, for a place that is called "the cigar box" it has no smoking, mainly due to the smoking ban in Kansas City. The drinks were served and my buddy ordered the "Well" rum and coke. While my beer was fine, he insisted we try his rum and coke. Whatever well they used must have come from the gas station down the way. It had to have been one of the cheapest wells of rum and coke I had ever tasted. We did not try the food, but as far as any suggestions, I would recommend a name change and perhaps better quality for the house wells. read more
