I came with a group of family and friends and out of nowhere the bigger hispanic bouncer tried to card my 65 yr old mother and tell her she needed to pay a $15 cover fee before entering. We then all addressed that thats not whats online and he doubled down and tried to get more money out of each of us. Came here on a Friday night around 11:45. The bar was completely dead with only about 20 people in it total. The bouncer then told us it was a $15 cover charge per person. We then said that's not worth it and we'll go somewhere else. The bouncer then said "no wait you can just come in for free" and tried to get us to stay. My group had two guys and four girls in it btw. The bouncer clearly saw us and thought it was an easy way to make a quick buck. Once we called him out on it, he took it back. For a bar that had no one in it, charging a $15 buy in at the end of the night is crazy, especially since the bouncer said never mind once we tried to leave. We didn't go in and went to a different bar. I've been to the Levee a few times now and half the time it is dead, and half the time the service sucks. WOULD NOT RECOMMEND. This is such a fun bar concept! It's a lot of assorted rooms with different DJ's and lots of bars all over so it was always easy to get a drink! Service was fast and much cheaper than your average bar! We just got well drinks so I'm not sure how fancy they get if you're looking for a cocktail? But the vibes were cool and the tree that runs through the middle added a lot of character! They also had a full live band on the main stage downstairs not sure if that was a coincidence or if they do that every night but I was impressed!! The levee was a place that I loved visiting and always recommended to others. However my recent experience at the levee was horrible. The security guards and bouncers treated each of us with disrespect. At some point in the night, it seemed that the guards were targeting a specific person of our group. It is important to add that our group were mainly white with a few people of color. While we were all jumping to the music and lightly pushing each other in our small group, a guard came over to the only black person of our group and physically threw them out of the bar. But the guards only gave a verbal warning to a white person for doing the exact same thing or worse. As we followed our friend outside within a span of 30 seconds, they were pinned down in the middle of the street with 2 police officers on top. During this time the same security guards and bouncers were laughing and making jokes towards our friend and us. As I read through other reviews it is obvious that there is a common theme of the guards acting hostile towards others. Levee do better. read more

Fantastic food! Especially for going much later and as an out of town guest I had assumed it would be just bar dive food. But pleasantly surprised. I took two stars off because the service was not good and the times we did see our server she was overworked and rather rude. The other star came off because some of our party came in one door and the rest came in another. Both groups were charged different amounts as a door fee. Tiny place, with a tiny dance floor. But a super fun and happy vibe. Everyone dances! They bring in popular bands from the region. The line is down the street before they open at 4 o'clock, and often times the tables are all taken by 4:15. Otherwise you need to stand. So get there by 4 o'clock. The first time I ever went to the levee it was subpar. They had lukewarm frozen pizza and cheap liquor. Every time I've been since then it's been the worst bar in Westport. I've seen shortchanging by security guards on covers, I've had friends drugged by the bar staff, friends get racially harassed by staff and still other friends who were taken advantage of with the staff's knowledge. Paid the $20 cover per person and then could barely get in the door because it was so crowded inside. Only 1 of us could make the way to the bar & waited 15 minutes trying to get a drink without any acknowledgment and left. Bouncer was a jerk when we asked about getting our $ back, not just a "no" which would have been fine, but chewed us out for taking 15 minutes to make the decision. Situated near Westport and the Plaza, the Levee draws in a mix of crowds from both areas. My first time coming here, it was hard to find (it has a parking lot in the back, but the exterior does look sketchy and the signage isn't that noticeable). They have a downstairs and upstairs level patio. Inside there is a first floor space for a small dimly lot music venue/ another room with a bar and seating (which was closed off when I went). In the upstairs section there is a bar and really small kitchen. The drinks on tap were average drafts, nothing really stood out. The food itself wasn't that spectacular; the burger patty was dry ( was cut in half and stacked on top of each other ?) and the tots were just okay. Overall it just reminded me of a college campus bar that serves food. I can imagine it being crowded when school is back in session and all the college kids are looking for some cheap drinks. read more

Extremely homophobic and disturbing staff. I came in a few nights ago on 3/17 when my friend who is a gay man was ripped off the dance floor shoved against the wall then kicked out. When I continuously asked security what happened he said "its between me and him" I was with my friend the entire time and not once did he do anything wrong. The security clearly just had an issue with the way he was dancing. I enjoy this venue when The Instamatics are playing! First Saturday's every month. They're awesome!! However, I consistently get ignored by the wait staff whether I order food or not because I can't partake in alcoholic beverages. It'd be a much more enjoyable time if I didn't have to spend time getting the wait staff's attention and then wait forever for my ticket. read more

Checked out the levee for brunch this morning. We showed up right when they opened and headed to the upstairs bar. We ordered drinks, a michelada and another beer, gin, grapefruit cocktail. Both were refreshing and light. I was so hungry and everything looked delicious, so I asked the bartender what she recommended, and ended up ordering the levee Benedict. I am glad she recommended it, because I wouldn't have ordered it otherwise. It was delish- think of it as a grilled cheese, topped with a poached egg and tomato soup. We also got the brunch burger, which was also good. Honestly, my expectations weren't that high, and the Levee exceeded them, by far! read more

I always enjoyed The Levee on nights out. Notice that it's past tense because Dad life has this place as all but a memory now. It's a fun spot to go out at because it's mildly off the beaten path while still being right between Westport and The Plaza. We've been there when the upstairs was rented out for a party and I loved it up there, and we've had impromptu birthday parties in the downstairs. I've never eaten here, in fact I don't think I've been here before 10 p.m. before, but I know the drinks are fine and the atmosphere is good. There's often live music on the weekends so you might have a cover, but it's never too high. All in all, a nice spot if you're bar crawling and the kind of place that fits for everyone in the group. read more

This is one of my favorite bars in Kansas City! They always have great live music and a great bunch! They just redid their upstairs deck which is perfect for drinking some of their delicious cocktails by a fire. They also have multiple spaces for large parties. This bar is so fun! Located near Westport and Plaza, this bar gathers crowds from all ages. Being in my mid-20's there are people my age as well as older. Each floor has a different feel which is so fun based on your mood. Their live band always knows exactly what tunes to play to get the crowd going. The throwback songs are always fun to sing along to. The upstairs is fun as well but with a more chill vibe. With pool and a bunch of tv's its fun to grab some beers and hang with a group. I love this bar and I think it is overlooked since it is not very eye-catching from the street. You wouldn't know on the outside that inside houses a great time and a fun atmosphere. read more

Came in on a Thursday for Reggae night. Cover was a reasonable $5. The crowd was slow to fill but by 10 the dance floor was packed. Drinks were strong and reasonably priced. The menu was typical bar food that was average at best. I will say the bartenders were on their game and quick to make drinks and provide great customer service. I've only been for brunch, but I would highly recommend it! We came for the launch of the new brunch menu/cocktail menu, and there are lots of great options. Our personal favorites were an espresso martini and the Windhund Hefe (grapefruit, hefeweizen beer, gin). I could drink a windhund every day be totally content. Food wise we had the hash (minus mushroom because of the boyfriend's preference) and the country ham french toast. I loved the french toast, and the ham added a really savory component that complimented the sweet. However, I would have loved thicker slices of ham or more ham to balance the dish. I've been here several times since my first review 5 years ago. The Levee is an interesting place. It's kind of like a good dive bar combined with 70s funk and sports. They have good drink specials, average bar food, and an overall fun ambience. There isn't much for vegetarian options here, but I recommend the quesadilla sans meat. I don't really come here for the food, though. Weekends usually have bands and a cover charge. I recommend The Levee during weekdays (but not Monday's or Tuesday's when it's normally closed). However, it is sometimes open for special sporting events, such as the World Series (which I'm currently here to watch). Go Royals! read more

I love this spot. This gem really has everything-- several outdoor areas, a stage for live music, an EDM room, and an upstairs bar area where you can order food. Each time I go, I have a great time. The drinks are great. During the weekends, the vibe is always right and the dance floor is always full. The staff has always been friendly, and attentive.
