This is an updated review following a conversation with the hotel manager, who listened to my concerns and helped find a reasonable solution. When I originally booked, I was careful to select a room with a private bathroom. The shared-bathroom rooms may be a good option for travelers on a budget, but that was not something I wanted to navigate while traveling with my teenage daughter. I booked a standard queen room, which I believed would work well for the two of us. Although the description indicated that the room included a bathroom, it did not clearly explain the room's unusual layout. When we arrived, we discovered that the shower was a clear glass enclosure located in the main sleeping area rather than inside the bathroom. This probably would have been fine if I were traveling alone, but it created an uncomfortable situation for my daughter and me. I initially contacted the hotel about changing rooms, but because I had booked through a third-party site, I was told that moving rooms would result in a significant additional charge. The normal price difference between our room and one with an enclosed bathroom was approximately $200 for five nights. However, the initial cost quoted to change rooms was nearly $600 for the remaining four nights. I contacted both the third-party booking site and the hotel again but was disappointed that a reasonable solution could not be found at that time. After sending additional emails, the hotel manager contacted me directly. We were able to upgrade to a larger room at a reasonable rate. The new room is perfect and actually much better than expected. It is easily twice the size of the original room, and the bathroom and shower are in their own private space. I truly appreciate that the manager listened to my feedback and worked to accommodate us. Guests should be aware that the bathroom layouts vary significantly between rooms. Some standard queen rooms may have a shower located in the main sleeping area rather than inside an enclosed bathroom. I recommend confirming the exact layout before booking, especially when traveling with family. Overall, the hotel is very clean, the lobby is cute and welcoming, and the location is excellent for exploring downtown Portland. The standard queen room was quite small and would probably have been fine for a solo traveler, but it did not work well for my daughter and me. The larger room has been a great fit for us. The staff members have been very kind and accommodating, particularly once I was able to speak directly with a person rather than communicating through the online concierge service. I am extremely disappointed with my experience at The Clyde Hotel. Due to a serious family emergency, I was forced to cut my trip short and drive all the way home from Oregon unexpectedly. Under those circumstances, I hoped the hotel would show at least a small amount of compassion or flexibility regarding my reservation. Instead, my request for a cancellation was completely denied without any consideration of the situation. I understand that hotels have policies, but there should be room for basic human understanding when a guest is dealing with a genuine family crisis. What makes this especially frustrating is that I wasn't canceling because I changed my mind or found a better deal--I was dealing with an urgent family matter that required me to leave immediately. Being charged despite those circumstances felt incredibly insensitive and customer service was unwilling to help. Policies are one thing, but how a business treats people during difficult moments says a lot about its values. Unfortunately, this experience left me feeling like the hotel cared more about enforcing a policy than doing what was right. I will not stay here in the future nor will I ever suggest this place. This was the most callous inhumane decision I've ever heard of. The wellbeing of your family matters not to them one bit. I stayed here for a week and it's overall a great place. My room, a Deluxe Queen, was accurate to the pictures shown on the website. Note that the floorboards creak intensely due to the age of the building...I was lucky I was placed on the 4th floor in a standalone corner unit. The Clyde is a hotel that was built in 1912, so keep that in mind. My pros and cons: Pros: +Room has towels, basic toiletries, a water kettle, tea bags, plus coffee beans/coffee pouches, and a clothing steamer. +Iced water is provided in the lobby, which also has generous couch seating, a photobooth, and ATM. +There is a hang-out/workspace loft on the 2nd floor above the check-in counter. +An empty mini bar bridge is a huge plus for anyone with their own food and drink. +Each room receives 2 tokens worth $4.50 each to Water Avenue, the cafe connected to the hotel. +Virtual check-in and check-out make getting in and out easy. Staff physically present are friendly and helpful. +Clyde is pretty well-located and walkable to many eateries, shops, Powell's Bookstore, Whole Foods, and CVS. +Turnover service is at your request. +Guests are given individual access codes to enter their rooms and the hotel after 8pm, adding to safety. Security is physically present in the lobby in later hours/early morning. Cons: -There is no ice machine in the building. You can request ice from Water Avenue, but the cafe closes at 6pm. -Transients and druggies are all over the area; some shout and scream out loud and it can be audible from your room. Some buskers also play musical instruments at night. Not the hotel's fault, but just a note to anyone new to Portland. -Road noise is audible and your floor may shake when a tram passes. -I personally didn't like how in my room type, the shower didn't connect to the toilet and sink. Not a huge deal, but you have to walk around from the latter two to the former, which is in the bedroom in the corner. read more

Had an amazing trip to Portland Oregon and stayed downtown Portland at Clyde Hotel. Such a charming Hotel with great historic architecture and vibe. The staff were so friendly and helpful. Room was perfect for my son and I. We liked the glow of the neon sign from our window. Fun fact! They leave you wood coin chips for a discount to adjacent coffee cafe connected to the lobby next door and they have a Photo Booth in the Lobby. The Hotel is also walking distance to great restaurants and destination sites ex: Portland Art Museum. They even held onto my luggage after checkout so we can do more exploring! The Clyde is a cozy boutique hotel in the heart of Portland. We stayed for two nights, and it was on the cheaper end of bookings via Air BnB. For the price, it exceeded my expectations. At about $140/night, it made for a great deal, given it's cute, offers a photobooth, and is in a very central location. Hotel room doors are equiped with coded locks that auto-lock. The radio already playing jazz was a nice touch. Water, coffee, and a mini-fridge were convenient. They also offered plenty of towels and even tokens for discounts at the coffee shop next door. They made good use of the space as far as fung shui, but it was missing some essentials like a microwave and storage/hooks for clothes. Things to note: -No microwave -The building is old and has a smell. It did linger on my clothes by the time we checked-out -Most of the front desk is self-serve. Via Air BnB they made the process easy by regularly texting info. -Easy access to the neighboring coffee shop -Lots of clubs, bars, stores, and restaurants in walking distance -The hotel was built in 1912, so the floors are creeky and has a lot of old building quirks Overall, you get what you pay for. And although The Clyde was cheap, it had a lot of redeeming qualities that make it more than worth the price. read more

1-Star Review Review of the Portland Clyde Hotel It took me some time to decide whether or not to write this review, but I believe it's important for three reasons: My experience deserves to be heard. I want to help others avoid what I went through. In today's corporate-driven hotel industry, this is one of the only ways a guest can push back. I booked five nights at the Portland Clyde Hotel through Booking.com because I was working nearby at Portland Stages. My requirements were straightforward: a pet-friendly hotel that was affordable and close to the theater, since I did not have a car. On paper, the Clyde seemed like the right choice. Unfortunately, the reality was very different. 1. Pet Policy Confusion at Check-In From the start, there was a breakdown between Booking.com and the hotel. Despite booking a pet-friendly room, the hotel acted as though they had no record of my dog and treated my request as brand new. I had to present paperwork and push back before it was "straightened out." I was then required to pay a $250 pet deposit. 2. Extension Nightmare Midway through my stay, I learned I needed to extend by one night. I booked and paid for the additional night through Booking.com. Even though the extension was reflected in their system, the hotel insisted I pay another $250 pet deposit. I refused, since I was not checking out and back in--I was simply extending. On the morning of my original checkout date, the hotel locked me out of my room and refused to release my belongings until I paid. I spent hours on the phone with Booking.com but got no resolution. This was an outrageous way to treat a guest. 3. AI Front Desk & Lack of Real Service This hotel operates with an AI-first system, and the front desk staff act as little more than gatekeepers. They are not empowered to resolve issues and instead read from scripts or push responsibility back onto the guest. Specific examples: Lighting: My desk lamp was missing a bulb. I needed proper lighting to work, but their response was dismissive:"Regarding the lightbulb issue, we sincerely apologize for the delay. Our team was notified, but as lightbulb replacement is not categorized as an emergency maintenance request, it can take some time to be addressed."While they may not consider this an emergency, for a guest who relies on a safe and functional room to work, the lack of lighting was an emergency. It took three days before the bulb was replaced. Shower Handle: On my first shower, the metal handle fell off and hit my toe. The damage to the tile was never repaired. Their written response?"At this time, we are unable to guarantee that this issue can be resolved during your stay. I apologize for the trouble and inconvenience it has caused." Technology: I could not get the Roku remote to work. Rather than sending someone to check, they emailed me generic instructions on how it "should" work. The remote turned out to be broken. Data Security: To extend my booking, the hotel required me to re-upload the front and back of my ID--even though I had already done this four days earlier. I refused at first because of security risks, but they insisted. This left me deeply uneasy about how my personal information is handled. 4. Noise Levels & Refusal to Relocate This is an old building with poor soundproofing. The guest above me woke at 6 a.m. daily, stomping in high heels and dropping shoes onto the hardwood floor. It consistently woke me up. I asked to be moved. The hotel had available rooms, but they refused. Their only "solution" was to tell me to use the earplugs they provide. 5. Neighborhood Safety Concerns The area around the hotel felt unsafe. There is a heavy homeless presence, and while many individuals caused no issues, others were visibly struggling with mental illness. I was told someone had been stabbed nearby just a week before I arrived. This made walking my dog in the area stressful and concerning. 6. The One Bright Spot The cleaning staff were the only positive part of my stay. They were attentive, kind, and professional. The cleanliness of the rooms was entirely due to their hard work, not management's policies. Conclusion While the rooms themselves were clean, the overall experience at the Portland Clyde Hotel was unacceptable. From pet policy disputes and deposit extortion, to dismissive maintenance responses, to unsafe conditions inside and outside the building--this was not a welcoming or professional stay. If you value basic hospitality, safety, or respectful treatment, I strongly recommend choosing another hotel. read more

They have a beautiful interior, however, the front desk service is nothing short of ugly. The woman we spoke to was incredibly dismissive of any of our concerns, and had horrible communication / customer service skills. Would've loved to have better service to come back again, however because of our experience we will be staying away. Others will be warned aswell. read more
