So I was in this little town of Muscatine, IA for a couple of days for work. There was not much going on here from what I could see. They have a 24 hr McDonald's and Walmart. In a town of 32K people, they had the basics covered. But you won't find a Starbucks in Muscatine. I wasn't looking for one, but I did want some coffee outside of the house coffee at my hotel. So I hopped on the inter webs, Yelp to be exact, and found this little coffee shop in downtown. It was about 4 miles from my hotel. I opted out of the breakfast provided by the hotel for a pastry and coffee at the Coffee Belt. The gentleman behind the counter greeted me when I walked in the door. Let me back up, the street the shop is on was deserted. It looked like a scene out of a zombie flick. I walked in shortly after they opened at 7am on a Thursday. They had all the usual suspect available to drink. I asked about the special hot chocolate they served. It is called Abuelita Hot Cocoa. I think the guy working was the owner. He told me the 411 on the hot cocoa and I decided to get one instead of coffee. DELISH! I also opted for a day old blueberry muffin and had a seat and started to pound out this reviews. A nice little shop in a nice little town. If you are rolling through like I did, stop on in a grab a drink.

This shop is relatively new in town and I've been wanting to stop in since it opened, which I finally did a few weeks ago. I follow their Facebook page and once I saw they serve Abuelita hot chocolate, I practically ran for the door. As a Hispanic, I could really appreciate that. It's the little things, ok? It's was cold and rainy the day I gave The Coffee Belt a whirl. In other words, perfect weather to check out a coffee shop. Inside, I felt so cozy. There's a few tables, a sofa, some comfy chairs and a table by the window. There was only one person behind the counter but it was not very busy. I ordered a cinnamon spice hot tea accompanied by a cinnamon apple scone. There were a few other desserts to choose from like muffins, cinnamon rolls and a giant slice of tres leches cake. The prices are affordable as well. My tea and scone were under $5. It's close by and beats driving across town to Starbucks. It always feels good to support a local shop anyway.

Love the selection of Sugar Free flavors!

Great to have a new coffee place in town, better than any of the others I've been to.

My first experience with her? I called to order a smash cake for my baby's first birthday. I sent my budget and a reference photo like any normal parent would (which was the most simple and plain cake that I actually ended up making myself but better) and she laughed -- actually laughed -- and said, "Let me put it like this, you're asking for a BMW cake on a Honda budget." That's what she said to a first time mom and first time customer. I was disgusted. That moment told me everything. She acts like she's doing people a favor by taking their money. The desserts are mediocre, the food is a joke, and her public responses to reviews are even worse...petty, defensive, and dripping with the same arrogance I heard on the phone. Then there's her social media.. full of cringe-worthy videos that make you wonder how someone can be this unaware of their own attitude. And apparently she orders Instacart and doesn't even tip. It's all the same energy: take, brag, and belittle. If she ever treated customers with even a fraction of the respect they deserve, she might actually have a good thing going. But for now, her reputation matches her product.. stale and hard to swallow.
