Came here for brunch. Avocadoes in the avocado toast were super creamy and the pickled onions were a great touch. Side potatoes were crispy and fun to eat. Strange though that the only savoury vegetarian option came with hot honey by default, but there wasn't a lot of it (and it was clearly marked on the menu). Also played really strange choice of movies on the screens inside the pub, during our meal we saw both some pretty gross scenes from Wonka and a super gory scene from the old Dune movie, though they did change it to avant-garde Looney Tunes (?) right after the latter. read more

My fiancé and I went with our cousins to The Commoner for brunch over the Christmas break. The restaurant had a cozy vibe with all these vintage furnitures and finishings. My fiancé for the Southern Chicken Sandwich and I got this Nashville Hot Chicken. Although the chicken was juicy and the batter was crispy, the spice level of the Nashville hot chicken was disappointing. The jalapeño in the southern chicken sandwich was spicier than the Nashville hot chicken. My chicken had a lot of thick batter and it was also very oily as well. The toast under the Nashville hot chicken was underwhelming and it soaked up all the oil, causing it to be soggy. I've eaten a lot of Huevos Rancheros over the years and there's always something just a little off. The dish is either not spicy enough or the flavors are too muted or, or, or. When I noticed that the Brunch menu at The Commoner contained their own take on this venerable dish, I knew I just had to order it. I didn't know that it would end up being the very best Huevos Rancheros I'd ever had. We showed up before noon on a recent Saturday and were immediately shown to a cozy table near the bar. The place wasn't exactly crowded, but that definitely changed over the course of our meal. (Had we arrived just a half hour later, for instance, I doubt we'd have been able to secure a table without a reservation.) Of course, I ordered the Huevos Rancheros ("Sunny Eggs. Tostada. Baked Beans. Salsa Fresca. Avocado. Sour Cream. Cilantro. Mozzarella.") The dish arrived a short time later and it was immaculate in terms of its presentation. It was the kind of plate you'd see in a commercial for a restaurant. But that doesn't really matter, not compared to how it tasted. And everything here worked. The flavors were definitely on point, and all the components worked so well together. And while on its own, I wouldn't quite say it was spicy enough, the dish comes with a small squeeze bottle of a very hot, very flavorful mango-infused sauce. Perfection. The whole thing also came with a generous amount of freshly-made nachos, too. I couldn't possibly have loved and enjoyed my meal more, ultimately. The Commoner on Dundas West is a handsome pub. The decor is classic but fresh and the space is filled with natural light. The menu is short and simple and executed beautifully. We started with the crab cakes and beef sliders. The crab cakes were perfect, crusty on the outside, well held together, and a pretty good size. The sliders were tasty with a sweet bbq sauce. The beef was a little dry but the sauce compensated adequately. The only strike on the appetizers is that they were priced a bit high for a portion of two pieces. We paid extra to get a third of each for our trio. I had the fish tacos. Perfect again. Hot, crispy on the outside and delicate flesh on the inside, not oily. The corn tortilla was just right too. It came with fries, which you don't see often on menus so it was a pleasant surprise. Nice bistro fries too. My friends had the crispy chicken sandwich and the steak frites. They were happy campers. My only other critique would be the limited beer selection for such a large and polished pub. There were several local brews on tap but not much draught choice on imports. Happily, they had Guinness. The Commoner makes you feel good about being out. It's a pleasing environment serving tasty food. Enjoy it with friends! read more

Lots of kids and groups of people. Seems really popular with the locals. It's a new, comfortable modern Americana space - gastropub I would say. Menu isn't too big which is great and less overwhelming for choices . Customer service here is fantastic. From the moment you walk in and til you leave you feel very welcomed. Ordered the regular burger which I find out as a standard is cooked medium well. That explained why I was disappointed with it. It was okay but lacked flavour depth and very dry. I can't say I'd order it again. I saw other dishes that were around and they seemed more appealing. I would definitely give this local indie spot a shot. It does have a lot going for it. Last Saturday my friends and I hit the Commoner for drinks and dinner. It was my first visit but my friend has always had a good experience so she was keen for us to go. We were not disappointed. The ambiance was warm and comfy, lots of eye catching wall art and decor. It had that cozy Brit feeling that is so appealing. The vibe was chill and casually hip. The place was packed ( highly recommend booking a reservation on the weekend). There was a great bar that I think my husband and I will eventually check out. The service was appropriately attentive. The ladies and I shared a half decent bottle of Beringer Cab Sauv. I ordered the Cob salad and it was perfect. The eggs were a a good consistency and there was fresh avocado, grilled chicken with an understated and tangy French dressing. A few of my friends had the French onion soup and I was tempted even though it is not one of my favourites. My husband was not over the moon with his wings however the rest of the group was very satisfied. We ended up staying far later then planned.. And the best part? Very reasonably priced. Patio was cute but I was disappointed in the food. The crab cakes fell apart easily but were decent, and I enjoyed the aioli it came with. The fried chicken sandwich though...it was incredibly salty and very oily. As I took bites from it, oil "squished" out of the sandwich and dripped down my hand You can kind of see the pools of oil on the chicken in the second picture. Steak was great. It was on the small size but was very good. Schnitzel came with Dijon mustard and beets - I do wish it came with gravy but the side lemon did the job. Restaurant has a nice big patio with lots of tree covering and is pet friendly. They close the restaurant after lunch to get ready for dinner service. Came in here last Friday after they've been opened for a week and the restaurant was packed! So nice to see a new restaurant do well in the area. We were told by the hostess the wait would be 30 mins (it end up being closer to 40-45mins). We were going to go to Bandit Brewery to grab a drink before dinner but I noticed empty seats on the side (waiting area). The hostess said we could grab a drink there while we wait (but only after I asked). The drinks took awhile as they were busy but I thought they had a great selection. I could tell the staff looked completely overwhelmed with how busy it was, which is understandable with a new establishment. We finally got a seat and ordered some food. I thought the burger we had was good. However, we also ordered the fish tempura which I thought was over battered, and I agree with another review below regarding the wings - they were a bit 'tough' and I don't believe they were deep fried or anything. I think this restaurant has really great potential but they may need to step up their food game. I hesitate giving less than a 4* because I truly did enjoy my time there. read more

Lovely decor and staff. Had the avocado on toast with egg to make it vegan. They come with potatoes which are great! Unfortunately the rye bread is cut super thinly and you get very little avocado. So it all tasted great but I left hungry. So my recommendation to the management is cut the bread thick and double the avocado serving size. read more

I finally made it in to his high-end pub, and it is no commoner. What a welcome addition to Dundas West/Roncy hood. My family and pals squeezed into one of their luxe booths and enjoyed some beer, nachos, mussels and truffle fries. As you can tell by the order, this place is a lil' fancy, however, the price is right. They have TVs on the wall for your favourite sporting event (I hear some dinosaurs are playing well these days), delicious menus perfect for a date or the family and a patio. read more

We had been trying to go here for a while. It's kind of annoying that basically a neighbourhood joint is pretty much by reservation only. The place is beautiful but with a certain amount of masculine sterility, the attempt at BDE. The leather seats got uncomfortable and the height of the chairs at the low top are slightly too high to settle in for a date night. Decent beer and cider selection. Kind of annoying to pay a premium not to drink beer but that's an ongoing gripe everywhere. Our server was lovely but definitely carrying one table too many. Now, the food is priced pretty fairly but, the kitchen is poorly run/short staffed. We waited forever for our food. I found that the portion sizes were also a little skimpy. The tuna tostada was delicious but basically just avocado and slaw. For that it was $11. The burger was adequate, patty was a bit thin and my dining companion had to load their burger with the aioli from the fries in order to make it more tasty. I'm also going to go on record and beg restaurants to stop with truffle fries. They are disgusting. You ruin delicious food by dousing them in truffle oil. Just stahp it! I was still hungry so I ordered a chicken taco, as I mentioned the kitchen was extremely slow. Our server came over to address this. By this point I no longer wanted my taco but as it was "two minutes from being done" I said sure I'll take it. If you're going to overload a corn tortilla with salsa and other ingredients that completely saturate it's shell, the least you can do is double up the shell. Or reconfigure it so you can eat it without a knife and fork. The food is basically not well but not horribly executed "elevated pub food". This place is new to our 'hood and looks SO CUTE that I wanted to give it the best review but I just couldn't. A group of four of us went for brunch on Sunday. Our server was super sweet but sooooo slow. There was four servers working a half full restaurant plus (who I assume to be) the manager. It shouldn't have taken us 15 minutes to get drinks. When our food finally arrived it was cold. Not even lukewarm but actually cold. We were too hungry at this point to complain but when my eggs (which were supposed to be over easy) were cold and clearly over cooked, I finally said something (after 10 minutes of trying to flag down a server). Unsure of how long it would take to actually get another plate of food, I forewent them making me a new plate. They offered me a complimentary mimosas for my trouble but it never arrived so we finally just gave up and left (and they didn't even bother to comp the mimosa that was on my bill ) Anyway, long and short is I'm hopeful that this place is just having new restaurant pains but I've seen a few reviews about cold food so it's something that must be addressed. The Commoner took over what was a sketchy wings place and made it into a lovely, upscale British retro pub. The decor is charming and there is lots of seating. We went for dinner on a Sunday night with a group of 7. We called about an hour in advance for a table and they were very accomodating and shifted some other reservations around so we didn't have to wait too long. My husband and I shared The Commoner burger (with short rib) and an Asian salad. The burger was delicious and totally worth paying extra for the short rib. The salad was disappointing- a $14 salad should be substatial and this was not. The dressing was too bland and the whole thing was just blah. Our server was very nice and friendly and the service was very good. But overall,with so many other good places in the neighbourhood I'm not sure I'll be back. read more

Went for dinner on Sat night at 9pm. It was super loud. Like unusually loud--by far the loudest place in the neighbourhood. Reflective ceilings and walls. Not a good option if you're looking for conversation. We had burgers and fries. Burger was above average, fries were below average. Our food was half an hour late because they ran out of burger buns (they bake their own.). Service was prompt and friendly. Fantastic renovation given this place used to be a Wild Wings locations, however their choice of hard surfaces interior creates a very loud interior where I feel like I can hear other tables conversations as well as I can hear my own. That said, loud restaurants aren't that unique in Toronto so I'm not influencing my review around it. As for what does matter, let's start with #1 reason to come here - the food... I had a very tasty "Commoner Burger" that comes with provolone cheese and bacon jam. I was admittedly skeptical of the $6 chicken taco, but it was a good size and pretty darn good as well, with lots of white meat chicken breast sliced up within. The fish and chips were decent but 1 piece was mostly batter and the fries with both meals were a bit soggy and limp. The craft beer selection is quality, with a nice mix of all styles and some of Ontario's best breweries. Kudos to the place for putting together a nice variety to choose from. Also, bonus points for the fact they take reservations, and the service levels were all perfectly fine, so overall it was a solid 4 star experience. read more

I can't love this place more. I went here just after it opened and it was way too busy. In the months afterwards, it was easier getting a table. But news is out, this place is great! So my fear now is that it's too popular, that I won't be able just to walk in and get a table...so make reservations on line, no matter what night. The staff are all AMAZING, including Marie-Dawn, the manager, who greets everyone. The menu has changed since it opened and it is amazing. The burgers are HUGE, so beware if you aren't too hungry. The schnizel and potatoe salad that come with it are my favourite on the menu. And I went for brunch and the selections are just as selective as the main menu. So whether you go for brunch or main menu, it's worth it. Please keep this place in business. SO GLAD it's in the neighbourhood, as it's a most welcomed business!!! read more

I really like The Commoner and commend the owner(s) for their ambition. The place is exceptionally renovated and you can feel the love that's set this place up well ahead of its time. ("If you build it they will come.") Having been here for dinner and brunch, I think the food is decent but found it overly complicated. I'd like to see simpler offerings with high quality ingredients assembled in balance. I think the creative options are well thought out. I just found the food to be over-salted (brunch) or, as in the case of the jerk ribs I had (dinner) under-marinated (meat with jerk sauce on top). Portions are great and I hope they get the gourmet gastropub foundation right. Service is mixed for me. Dinner mains were fast but dessert took way to long. Brunch was excessively slow (they open at 11 and we arrived at 11:20, before they got too busy). Super friendly and responsive wait staff. I just think they need to get the rhythm right. Having worked in this business it may be a matter of synchronizing the kitchen with the service and rotating table seatings in balance. Not sure what it is but something is off and I can't blame the wait staff if it's the same pattern on different meals with different servers. I opted to leave this review because, if any of it resonates with The Commoner then perhaps it can improve. I think this place has bright a great vibe to our community and stands to bring a regular crowd together for local events and televised sports. And if my views are off then no big deal: it's a decent place that's walking distance and I still plan to drop in for the odd meal. So I've been here twice now in less than a month and I've got to say, I am impressed. What once was a sketchy looking Wild Wing is now a beautiful British-style Gastropub. Now that we've got that out of the way, let's get into the nitty-gritty. The menu has lots on offer, which is something that I appreciated. Each and every single time, I have found myself at a loss for what to order because I kind of want everything. On this second visit, I had made a mistake thinking that we would be there during brunch, and it seems that brunch is only served on Sunday's. Weird flex, but okay. Both times I have had the French Onion Soup ($11) and have enjoyed the comforting and satisfying flavours. The serving size is also pretty forgiving, but you absolutely need to order a secondary item. On my most recent trip, I got the tuna tostada ($11) which when asking the server how big it was she described it to be a LOT smaller than what it actually was. I thought it likely could have used a bit more acid: the slaw was lacking in flavour, the lime slice they provide you to squeeze on was way too small. But otherwise, it was okay. Not the most mindblowing tostada I've had, but pretty legit. One thing that was a bit disappointing was my pal's fries. On the menu, they are labeled as "Duck Fat Fries" but literally they tasted that regular fries that weren't that hot. The service here is pretty hit and miss. What I've noticed from visiting twice now is that both times there seemed to be one server for the entire restaurant. I visited at two contrasting hours (8 PM weeknight and 1:30 PM weekend) and the servers are literally doing their bests, for the amount of space they have to cover. Since my two visits here, I have suggested it to everyone I know. It's in a weird spot in Roncy/Dundas West but I'd love to see this spot not only thrive but survive. read more

This place was so great. The interior design is BEAUTIFUL - from the bar stools to the lighting to the tile floors near the washroom. I'd love to come back a few times and sit at different tables, since I'd probably notice something new about the place each time. My boyfriend had the NY steak, which was a big serving of meat, veggies, fries and spices/sauces. It was quality meat and it was cooked well. I had two chicken tacos with pineapple salsa and they were "healthy" but satisfying. Loved the pineapple salsa! For dessert, I had the toffee pudding and OH my god, it was so good. 100% I'm coming back for this dish. It was both fluffy and dense and the toffee was perfect. We went out for brunch on a Sunday without a reservation and got a table at The Commoner immediately (unlike the first two places we tried on Roncesvalles that were jammed).
