I'm going to expose my bias: I came here on a specific mission today and this was not my first choice, but will be next time. Today is the one year anniversary of my father's passing and his favorite thing to do with me was go get lemon Bismarck's and listen to Metallica and go for weekend drives. Raddest dad around, right? Well, since moving to Gorham in January I have not for the life of me been able to find a bakery that makes lemon bismarcks and is open with regular hours. I'm going to be honest here, TCJ doesn't have lemon bismarcks on their menu, but I called ahead to see if there was any chance in hell this could happen for me, not disclosing the very sentimental reason. Not only did they say they would make them special for me, they did it right that second. HOLY SERVICE, BATMAN! When we walked in the door the place was packed, with a line curving around the bakery counter and three very busy but pleasant employees. When one said hi to me I told her I had called earlier. She smiled and said "we already made them!" and the bismarcks in question were waiting for me neatly packed at a register. This tiny little act of good service probably meant nothing to these people by it meant everything to me today---everything--as I got to have that little piece of home and my dad. Stop crying. It gets better. Let's talk about a real review, here: Product: A+! The thing was HUGE and delicious. Two was too much food, haha. Lumberjack dad would have loved it. Homemade, flaky, rustic, amazing. Price: I paid five bucks for the experience. Win. Win. Win. Convenience: not too far out of the way and with decent parking. And it's in the cape so drives afterward are stunning. Can't complain there. Overall: I'm going back a thousand more times. The feel is very retro. Like when my nana used to force me to church under the premise that donuts were happening after, and that makes me really happy. Between the product and the service and the feels I can't say enough good things about this place. In comparison I have to note: Westbrook and Gorham were both let downs all around. I will admit that sometimes I wake up and take the 30 minute just for donuts. They are worth it. Not many things in life are worth a drive that far in the morning since I really don't like the morning but the variety of donut choices and the fresh bakery smell will leave you wanting more. Yum! They are priced quite reasonably as well and I never ever leave with just one. I have attended a few parties where they serve cakes and cupcakes from the cookie jar and I always throughly enjoyed them, they were the right out of sweet and moist. This year for my birthday however my husband got me a chocolate chocolate cake from here and I must say I was disappointed, it was incredible dry and dense. I would not return for another as I know another local bakery much closer that does a far better job but the donuts are divine and I will return! read more

All you need is the raspberry Bismarck. Done and done. This goes on the top donuts list of all time. Perfect cream to raspberry to donut ratio. It's sweet, but the right sweetness. Hubby and I split and that was perfect. You could share with more people, but you might end up sad. Get a knife and fork, pack it up and take it to Fort Williams Park and enjoy on the water. These donuts are incredible!! We haven't even tried anything else because the donuts are where it's at. We have gotten the Boston cream, raised chocolate glazed with sprinkles, maple cream filled, and the raspberry bismark. The filled ones have a great amount of filling (always the potential downfall of filled donuts), the glazes on top or powdered sugar is plentiful. The donuts are moist and very big. It's a small store but there are a few tables to dine at. They usually have some samples of various items to try, and they have a nice coffee selection available. This place was mobbed. Seemed like a place for locals and tourists alike. Fresh baked goodies, with a couple gluten free and vegan options. I believe there was also warm cider as well. If you want the best donuts in all of Maine you found the place, they are baked through the night and put out fresh every morning at 6, the owner is always there and takes pride in his baking. They also have a wide variety of other pastries that are equally delicious as well as cakes and a selection of home made sandwiches. read more

Okay people, the donuts here are fantastic! I didn't make it to Holy Donut on my trip. My friend who lives in Portland said The Cookie Jar has better donuts (I never eat donuts, so after Cookie Har and Hifi, I couldn't eat anymore!). I got a few donut holes and the red velvet donut. The strawberry hole was sooooo gooood! The red velvet donut melted in my mouth. I've never seen and tasted such a big, fluffy and moist donut! We passed this bakery on our way back into town and were excited to pop in and get something sweet. We seemed to be about the only people not greeted warmly, but seemingly glared at a bit. We thought we would get a steal on the half price shelf so we grabbed some donut hole looking things and to our shock these "half priced" items rang up for almost $6.50. No wonder they were half price as well, very dense, no flavor, thought it was powdered sugar and chocolate. Just powdered chocolate. Very disappointed, but you win some and you lose some. Not sure why I haven't reviewed The Cookie Jar already, but suffice to say, even if you aren't a huge fan of baked goods, you'll find something deliciously tantalizing here! My personal favorite is the chocolate donut covered in coconut flakes. The best part is the PRICE... this shop is my "go to" for bringing treats to the office as they run cheaper than your local quick service chain and taste heavenly. We stopped in to grab breakfast and a snack for our trip to Fort Williams: 2 donuts, 2 cookies, a coffee and a tea set us back a whole $6. You will likely encounter a line, and backing out of the parking spots can be downright dangerous, but it is so worth a stop, whether you're a local or a visitor! Was in town for my birthday. An impromptu trip. The day of my birthday, a Saturday, late afternoon, I decided I wanted a homemade cake. With all the delicious bakeries in the Portland area, I didn't think I'd have a problem. Turns out I was wrong. I called a minimum of 10 places, which were either closed or I was told I had to order 48 hours in advance. My fault, but I was bummed. I was just about to resort to going to a local grocery store when my daughter found this bakery. I called and they were not only open until later than most, but they said they could help me out. We went right over and the older woman, possibly the owner, (I wish I could remember her name) was so great. She took my order and had it ready in 10 minutes. A beautiful, homemade birthday cake that turned out to be delicious too. She even threw in a box of candles. All for a very reasonable price. My family and I took it to the ocean and ate it with spoons right out of the box. It was perfect. It made my day! We will be back to try some of your other offerings when we are in the area again. This is just a post on the donuts and I wanted to say how EXCITED I am to finally have found the donuts I have been searching for in the Portland area... Tony's Donuts are too dry (I tried many times.) I do like the new Holy Donut donuts but they are different, and I wouldn't describe them as classic, although they are very good. But Cookie Jar donuts are classic cake donuts, fresh and delicious... the buttercrunch is definitely a favorite. It's a bit of a drive, and it's sort of easy to miss. They're located off of Shore Road in Portland/South Portland/Cape Elizabeth (one of those) but get in your car and go there because, dude. Wow! Now THIS is what I'm willing to expend calories on, and stop off, or even drive 30 to 45 minutes out of my way for! We stopped in here, after seeing it pop up on Yelp and after a quick drive to the lighthouses down the road. I wanted to get my neighbors a treat for taking care of my cat. I sampled a couple of cookies they had a table inside, and inquired about which were which. Two tasted like a spiced wafer, and they informed me that the sweeter tasting one, was a molasses cookie, and the other was almost like a thin cookie bar, they call, either hermans or hermits. I HIGHLY recommend these. At 80cents each, they are a steal and a meal in one. I proceeded to buy 6 of them. I threw in a lobster shaped sugar cookie for good measure and a little "regional charm". By the time our plane boarded that evening, I was down to 4 "hermans" By the time I went to sleep I was down to 2 "hermans" Since my wife said "I'm not going to give the neighbor's 3 cookies!!", I finished the last 3 items in the bag with my coffee the next morning at home. If I had to do it all over again, I'd get a box for me, and a small bag for them. Go here! PS. The donuts, which I did NOT have, looked so amazingly plump, fresh and with original flavors, that I'd get 6 of those next time. Maybe I'll learn to share by then. read more

These are my favorite donuts in southern Maine. They have so many different flavors, including some seasonal ones, and the donut holes are almost as big as a regular donut. I love bringing a couple dozen to work and hearing how much everyone enjoys them. My personal favorite is the raised glazed donut. It's light and fluffy which is perfect if you plan on eating more than one. While you're here, you can't leave without getting some raspberry filled cookies. Anytime someone talks about the cookie jar they will most likely mention these cookies, and they should, because they are phenomenal. If you're really nice and very polite, they may go get some from the warmer in the back :) read more

I am a self aware sweet tooth. I have the cravings of a schoolyard fat kid. That said, I drove 30 minutes out of the way to get here. And my God... I am almost willing to drive back from Boston (2 hours) to go back. LOVE that they have a samples table so you can try before you buy to see what you like. Their prices are amazing! And their creme filled log or whatever it is is absolutely to die for. Perfectly crispy and the creme was so light and airy it was the best pastry I can remember having. Their doughnuts are crazy good too. I may have put away about 3 of them. their cookies were soft and not brittle, which I hate, so they won me over right there. I cannot rave enough. We really out did ourselves when stocking up on some yummy baked goods for here! A red velvet donut that was huge and delicous, a gingerbread man that I wish I had another of, a sugar cookie that was pretty good but not rocking like the man was! My husband got a mini whoopie pie, a cream horn and a sugar cookie. He enjoyed the sugar cookie and loved the cream horn but the whoopie pie fell short of his expectations. Many people in the south Portland in Cape Elizabeth area have been fans of this place for a long time. I know I've come here more than once over the years with my mom. The thing we enjoy about it is that it's local and makes very tasty things. My husband also has an appreciation for any bakery that has a rack of pre bagged day old items for half price! Most baked goods, fresh made, are still tasty for almost a week, depending on the item. So a half-priced section of yesterday's Goods, is a value to say the least. Well worth checking out. read more

Leaving Cape Elizabeth we sign for the Cookie Jar caught our eye. Stop the VEHICLE we need sweets! This is a nice bright open bakery, spacious and well lot. They had a huge amount of cookies (hence their name) and donuts and other sweets. It was kind of disappointing though that nothing was labeled. I felt silly asking "what's this? What's that?" Over and over when there were other customers. We ordered some cookies and pizzelles. Everything was pretty good! The pizzelles were EXCELLENT. They were slightly thicker than traditional Italian cookies- and the flavor wasn't the same- but hey were SO yummy, covered in powdered sugar! We stayed down the street and went here for breakfast one morning. The baked goods are out of this world good. We got a muffin, donut, and twist and all three were reaaaalllyy good. It's def more of a bakery than coffee spot, though. We went for coffee, and it was good, but it is one of those places where the coffee is brewed and left in a container to be poured later. We would absolutely recommend this place for baked goods. Give it a try! read more
