The Cooler is a good spot to get hammered...I can't say i've been there during a duck game...but it does get packed. Very packed. They have a huge 15' projection TV which is cool...I think they have 2 to 3 pool tables also. Service is kinda on the lower end. I think that's due to a small bar with LOTS of people. I cant vouch for the food, but drinks are standard....normal priced, nothing too strong. We normally stumble in here during a night out. We dont normally kick things off here...kinda the tail end of the night thing. Next year I would like to watch a game at the cooler, that could bump my review to 4 stars for sure. read more

Long ago I had an issue with this bar and stopped coming for probably a year. Since coming back, I swear by it. Service is reliable and all bar tenders seem to be genuinely interested in seeing me have a good time. They monitor the bar extremely well and casually engage in conversation. My daughter is a freshman at the University this year. I drove from Los Angeles for Family Day here at the school. Thursday night I worked 15hrs (because college is expensive). I got off at 1:00 am and didn't get home until 2:00am. I got up Friday morning @ 6:00am to take my youngest daughter to school. I came back home, did some business and then packed my clothes and left to drive to Oregon. I pulled into a town 3 hrs away and rented a hotel to get some much needed sleep. I slept from about midnight until 4:00am. I got back on the road @5:00 am to get to the school for the Saturday football game. I met up with my daughter and her friend. They went into the game and I walked around checking out the various tailgates and festivities. I stumbled upon this bar/eatery named "Coolers." I ordered a drink and some food. I sat at a booth and ate my burrito and completed 1 vodka and tonic. I fell asleep after a while and was awakened by the bartender who assumed I had to much to drink and said your falling asleep. I explained why I was sleepy just as I described above. She did not listen to what I said because she's a bartender and here's this type of rhetoric all the time. I get it. After some time passed I got up to order another drink and the same bartender takes my order but yells back at me, "I'm not serving you because you were sitting over there falling asleep.!" I was taken aback by her accusation because I had explained to her why I fell asleep. She didn't respond as if my explanation was BS. I just stared at her in disbelief and then she said, "Why are you looking at me?" I said because I want my credit card which I had given her to run a tab. She went through the cards she had placed in a glass and didn't find my card, turned to me and said, Are you sure you had a tab and left your card? I responded I'm positive. She looked elsewhere and found my card. She ran the card to find out my tab and said there nothing on your card!I responded back to her yea but you said I'm drunk and fell asleep. The demeanor and attitude of this bartender was totally foul. I understood her actions at first. I could have been someone that had to much to drink and by law when bartenders recognize that they are bound to be responsible and not serve you any further. Through conversation and the fact that I had to tell the bartender what I had to drink to even be charged infuriated her and she threw my ID and credit card on the bar counter. At that point I unleashed on her with numerous choice words. She demanded I leave and I let her know that was already in progress. I located someone else employed by the bar to report her unprofessional, accusatory, rude and brash comments and behavior. Of course nothing was done. I DO NOT RECOMMEND PATRONIZING THIS ESTABLISHMENT. We are not going to mention the fact that I'm Black in culture and she was an elderly, tattooed, wrinkly old lady passed her prime trying salvage what life she has left. read more

So my buddy got off work at 8am and I had a meeting at 9. I wanted a place to grab a beer and some breakfast. After calling a few bars and asking their hours I used my brain(yelp) and saw The Cooler was open early. There was only 5 people in the bar including me and my friend. So the service was great. The bartender was funny and fun to talk to while I waited. I ordered a pint of Mirror Pond and it was 4.50, which is pretty stiff for a common Oregon beer. It's pretty ridiculous to charge so much for a pint when you can get a 6 pack for twice that. My breakfast burrito(the Mo) on the other hand was great. It was just enough food, not too filling. If you're super hungry I would get the potatoes with it. Overall it was a good spot to grab a drink and some breakfast. Lunch is when I go to the Cooler. It is not so loud you can't visit with friends. There is always a friendly "Howdy!" from behind the bar when you come in. Daily specials and a variety menu. We had a really fun time at The Cooler tonight doing trivia with family and friends. We'd already planned to go there with four people, and ran into two more friends who had come for trivia too! The game is very well organized, with fun prizes. I wish the majority of questions weren't about sports (especially college football), and that the categories were more diverse (how about some biology, geography, history, literature?), but otherwise the host did a fantastic job, they use music for music related questions, and the rounds are well spread out! The food is just mediocre bar food, nothing great, I'd probably give it two stars. The bar itself is nice, I love the high ceilings and the couches. I'm going out on a limb: This is my favorite shape of a Eugene bar building in city limits; scratch that, in mid- to southern Oregon. Let's put aside what's inside. Who doesn't like the half-keg that is The Cooler? Well, in Eugene, a lot of people don't like it. But from a guy who lived down the street for a couple of years, this place is solid. I never liked the brush-off I'd get from the bartenders because I was a few years older than the hot tail they cared about, but I had some fun in this place. The drinks are reasonable and the vibe can be great, especially during karaoke nights. My No. 1 and No. 2 memories: (1) the sweatshirt with a pig on it that I bought for a Bay Area buddy in 2006 that is still in circulation, and (2) the $150 I'm still up from the nights in the smoke-filled dungeon of touch-screen gambling encased in a wood-and-cheap-steel cage. Could it be cooler? With effort. But it's still cooler than most spots. read more

The Cooler Bar is a landmark establishment and one of the best places to go before or after a Oregon Ducks football game. The first thing you will notice is the place looks like a giant family room, complete with couches and pool tables.For sports fans you will not find a bigger screen, something like 15 feet across! The bar itself is welcoming and has a killer beer selection. A must on the menu are the slider burgers and the rest of the menu from salads to prime rib is all very good. I went to The Cooler for the first time last night for a Girls Night Out event. Shame on them. They grossly oversold. Attendees were packed in. About 80% could not even view the stage. They didn't turn on or up the AC to account for the overfill and it was so muggy. Add to that: the ticket taker at the front door was crazy rude. The bartenders were fine. Draft beer $5. read more

Meggan is da shit. She is so sweet and kind. She can make a good drink. She talks to you like a person. I'm no expert, but I think she has a high IQ. She works really hard and she made our experience really great. Because of her service, we were able to talk and connect as a group. That is what going to the bar is about. She made the Cooler one of our "go to" places. People in the service industry are important because they are able to give us experiences that mold our lives. That is what Meggan did today. I went there after the game last night. I couldn't bring my bag in because it had alcohol in it so I checked it at the entrance for a few. At the end of the night I couldn't find the ticket so I pointed out my bag. The bouncer didn't believe me and I told him I could describe what was in the bag. He reached in and took a bottle of crown royal out of it, and handed it to me. When I argued he told me to shut my mouth and leave. They had the commentary/play-by on for the first match, but as more people showed up for the second match, they turned the commentary off and put on a dozy mix of reggae. I've actually had a lot of fun at this place despite a few big issues. Once I was told my card was declined and the bartender was super rude about it. I explained that my card should work and again the guy was rude, so I paid cash. Then when I got home and checked my bank account the transaction had gone through so basically I paid for a round of several drinks twice. It was pretty upsetting. The second issue I had here was when I came here on my lunch break. I didn't drink and had a salad with chicken on it that didn't taste fresh at all. Later I threw it up. This used to be my favorite place to go after work and have a drink. The staff was friendly and we also had good service. Recently I went in and it was different experience. I use cash for everything (being a bartender myself) and for some reason 2 days after I was there my card was charge $50 when I know for sure I paid cash for my tab at the end of the night. At the cooler, in my own experience. Merely appearing intoxicated=unsafe patron and (illegal) physical removal from there. They know that if a person is intoxicated, any claims of abuse will get thrown out. I literally walked to the bathroom, came out and was physically removed after he said "out" (pointing to the door) for me asking why I was being removed. Trust me, there is no backstory. Just a quiet guy going to the bathroom. That's it. They could have escorted me out the back patio (which is right by the men's bathroom door). Oy what can I say about this place? When you walk in, it is oddly dark. Why is it so dark? The place is slightly dingy and sad inside. Typical bar decor of flashy beer signs all over. They have two pool tables. They have tables with chairs as well as couches. Although couches at bars kind of scare me. They have a couple wobbly tables and chairs outside. Your view is of a parking lot and some trees. There were some interesting people sitting outside. One who was clearly homeless in some way but was still drinking a beer and sucking down a couple of cigarettes. (By the way later on while driving home, saw that guy on the street with his cardboard sign asking for money) The waitress came out to take mine and my friends orders. We were discussing earlier on that both of us were going to order the chicken fingers and fries because when you are at questionable establishment you can never go wrong with chicken fingers and fries. Both are pre made products that just have to be thrown in the fryer. Well I guess its true what they say about assuming.... (you can finish the rest of the statement) I started to eat the chicken fingers. The basket came with 3 of them. When I got to the second one I broke it in half and it was completely raw. I checked the 3rd one and sure enough that one was raw as well. Seriously raw chicken???? I was so disturbed. Finally when the waitress came to check on us , we addressed the problem to her. She asked if we wanted another round of it. I declined in that I didn't want another round of salmonella or food poisoning on my hands. They didn't charge us for the chicken fingers although that was a given being that I couldn't eat half of them. We love the cooler! We threw a 40th birthday party here and the drinks, food and overall vibes were amazing. The bartenders are quick and super friendly, and attentive to everyone at the party. The kitchen crushed it with tasty food and appetizers for the event, and the manager was really helpful in doing all the clean up. The manager is new to the manager job but she's been there for years and you can definitely feel her entire heart is in this place. She rocked it and was extremely pleasant to organize it all. Went into the Cooler for the first time in years last night with a coworker who frequents the place and had talked it up. What I learned is that the bartender there (Bender?) was super shady. For one thing I never got more than a grunt out of him after getting passed over more than once, for another thing, my friend drinking high end vodka which is usually in the $6-$6.50 range at other bars was charged $3 for a huge pour, while I had a $8 tic tac made with Burnetts, tipped a dollar, then had an $8 Kettle (still tipped a dollar), both very modestly poured. At other bars in town the drinks I had also usually cost around $6-$6.5, and the tic tacs are made with Absolut Mandarin. I'm definitely never going back! read more

Just got back from The Cooler after a great breakfast. Breakfast at 1:00PM on a rainey Sunday, ham and eggs, wheat toast coffee. $9.00, DW had a pancake, done well. Place was hopping at 1 but service was quick and friendly. Not a fancy place but very comfortable and good vib. read more
