The first time I came here was for some curds and drinks (classic). I genuinely enjoyed both of those things enough that I decided to return for a second visit and grab dinner. Maybe I didn't do my due diligence in checking the ingredients, but I ordered the Margherita Flatbread and it was not my favorite. I believe they used vegan cheese which I'm not a big fan of. I would definitely come back here because I loved their drinks and apps, but I'll be sure to check the ingredients more closely when ordering food! Should have been more suspicious when the water tasted like pool water. The mussels were inedible, fishy, watery and the massive amount of garlic did nothing to cover the disgusting swamp taste and smell. Salads had no dressing and the extra dressing is not good. The cheese curds were solid. I had two beers which were amazing and I'm had in the bag and the food is still disgusting. What a terrible dinner, sorry to my mother in law because it's her birthday. Our group was in the area watching the Ironman race and decided this would be a excellent place to have lunch and view the runners going by. We had to wait about 20 mins or so for a table (even though tables that could hold 6-8 had only 1-2 people at them - they would not allow sharing due to Covid). The hostess seemed a bit disorganized but eventually we got us to our table and our very nice server was there to help us. Like many place due to staff shortages he was new but did a nice job. I started with a bloody mary which was very good and had the required beer chaser (that is required in Wisconsin). Luckily we were entertained watching the race because the food took a long time getting out to us but again we get it due to staffing issues.... I got the smoked ham egg sandwich which was great, one other got the french toast and loved it, and another the scrambler of the day - also a hit. The only disappointment was the burger which was not medium rare but more medium plus... Prices were fair. Will need to return because it has been quite a while since we were last here. read more

I stopped at this place while visiting the downtown area of Madison. I ordered the fish and chips along with dragons milk (alcohol). The 3 piece fish were hearty flaky chunks and so delicious. This is one of my favorite restaurants in all of Madison. All the food here is fantastic. You will be happy no matter what you order. The beer selection is phenomenal. They have St. Bernardus on tap. If you are a soccer fan, this is the best place in Madison to catch a game. Service is always great. They do a really nice job with their kids menu, but it can be a pretty loud environment when it's busy. If you have a child that is sensitive to loud noises, check this place out when you have a babysitter or go on a weekday when it's quieter. read more

The decor is unique and the outdoor seating is a plus in a great location 'at the steps' of the Capital. The menu was hard to choose from everything sounded so good. Came here on a Friday night - very busy. Pretty cool vibe. Had the dinner special of breaded baked haddock with green beans and red potatoes in a lemon Buerre blanc sauce. Fish was cooked perfectly as was the beans and potatoes the sauce had the right amount of lemon in it. My friends had the fish and chips and the sliders and they liked their dishes. Delicious! Came here on a rainy night -- food was delightful. They are at half capacity as of September for COVID, but was able to find a table within 20 minutes or so. I tried the oyster / grass burger, which featured oyster mushrooms, local ground beef and farm fresh cheese. The burger was mostly a hit, but the mushrooms on the burger were grossly over salted which took away from the flavor of the mushrooms. The harvest soup (for upgrade) was a tomato soup and tasted delightful and fresh. I also tasted the pork belly mac and cheese which was delightful and had a hibiscus creme brule type of dessert. As an appetizer, I snacked on the fried cheese curds. It was a heavy meal with the only disappointment being the crazy amounts of salt on the burger, but totally forgivable for an overall fantastic dining experience. read more

The 3 of us came for lunch this week, It was a little loud, we had a hard time hearing the waitress. Our son had the burger and fries he said it was really good. We shared the curds which were light & fluffy. I had the veggie sandwich with grilled squash, carrots & onions it had some good strong flavors of pesto, I would have liked it toasted. Regretabely my husband had the reuben it was dry, sweet, tough and tasted like it was reheated. I don't know of a time that he hasn't eaten his whole reuben. We stopped here but there was about 10 minutes until open - when we tried the door, an employee let us in and said we could come in even though they weren't open yet. How nice! The food was good! Very decent place to grab a drink (or two, three) and a bite to eat if in Madison. We stopped here after catching a Broadway show at the Overture and it was good! Definitely in a short walking distance. They had a decent happy hour with specials on drinks and food. I had the Autumn Journal and it was very very good. One of my favorite gin cocktails that I've had before. I also had the sliders which were on special for HH, and the Cobb salad. Both were decent, no real complaints!! The Cobb salad apparently came with dressing already on it, however I did have to ask for additional ranch, and I'm not typically a heavy dressing type of person for my salad. But honestly, this minor detail isn't enough to leave a sour taste in my mouth in regards to this restaurant. We went to Cooper's on a Thursday around noon and had lunch and a shot to honor our friend. Great atmosphere and friendly welcome at the door. We sat at the bar as that is where our friends barstool was located. Bartender took our order and was super nice and friendly. My wife ordered the Chili while I tried a fish sandwich with cheese curds. Both we done fast and were hot and delicious. Definitely a cut above your regular tavern food. The chili had some heat without being too hot and great flavor. The fish sandwich was a good size and came on marbled rye bread - oh so good. Service and atmosphere were fantastic. I have been to Cooper's a few times since living in Madison. I also asked them a few years ago to if they would donate a gift card for a good cause and wow the owner was very generous. He donated a 100 dollar gift card, I was so ecstatic with the donation. Last night my husband and I met a couple on State Street, we all decided to go have dinner somewhere on the Capital. I visited The Cooper's Tavern on 11/19 with a friend of mine and we both had the best experience. It was my first time visiting the establishment and my expectations were pretty low considering the menu signified boring American food to me. We had an order of the cheesecurds and we both ordered the Pork Belly Mac and Cheese for our entree. I am not a huge fan of adding meat to my mac and cheese, however, the pork belly was so incredibly flavorful and was the star of the dish. It was crispy, salty, and had the best fatty flavor I've ever tasted, and I am not a fan of eating the fat of meat. The mac and cheese was garlicy and creamy which complimented the pork belly perfectly. Additionally, the cheesecurds were delicious and reminded me of the cheesecurds at Old Fashioned. Despite the surprisingly phenomenal meal, the staff was also incredibly kind and accomodating which positively added to our wonderful dinner. The reuben was some of the best corned beef I've had, and the fries are perfectly crispy. The beer list is extensive as well with interesting local options. Plenty of seating both inside and out. The service was very nice and helpful regardless of the crowd. The bad: It was a bit tight for the Arsenal game during brunch which meant we had to wait awhile for seats, but that's hard to control. The Cooper's Tavern is located behind the Madison Concourse Hotel, adjacent to the Capitol building. All the food I tried was well prepared and very flavorful. They take typical tavern/bar types of meals & put a spin on making it unique to Coopers. Not every restaurant can nail changing up the recipe, but Cooper's Tavern has it down! Everything came out really crispy and fresh. I'm also impressed with their tap menu and various whiskies they had on the menu. They had some really rare stuff that you really don't see at a typical bar. I would love to come back for brunch!!
