We have dined here in the past, usually a good meal. However, a few months back we had a reservation, thru open table, and they called about 45 mins before to tell us they had to cancel us. Why? They just booked a big party and needed all their tables. I was amazed at the pure guts to do that, told her so and mentioned we'd never be back. I've had meals here when it was a Michelin rated restaurant My wife and I went today along with 14 other friends and family. We have been coming back for five years to enjoy a holiday meal. The menu was a pre fixe menu consisting of an appetizer of either fried calamari, lobster bisque or bib lettuce salad. The main course choices were a hanger steak, sea scallops or PEI mussels. I cannot speak for those with the PEI mussels but the hanger steak came out cold and was extremely chewy, the sea scallops were more like bay scallops and over done,dry and chewy, While I did not complain at the time of service I feel it is necessary to forewarn anyone who goes there for dinner based on reputation. The Copper Beech Inn used to be on of our family's favorite places to dine. What happened to this place? We could always count on an excellent, well-cooked meal. Not anymore! Of the five of us dining, not one of us enjoyed our food. I ordered the Salmon with a Terriyaki glaze. What I received was a pice of undercooked fish with jarred Terriyaki glaze smeared on top. The rice was just that.....plain, unseasoned, flavorless rice. I will give the high marks for the vegetables though......they had flavor. On our way out, no one was in the lobby.....except one employee sprawled a crossed the sofa in front of the fireplace. I guess the fact that there we're virtually no other diners that night should have been a top off. It is very sad to see such a beautiful place slowly crumble into demise! read more

Copper beech bfast was just as good as their dinner. We were seated in the front glass area. It was raining and romantic :) The table already had the most adorable freshly baked pastries. Our coffees came quickly and they kept them coming! We had smoked salmon bagel, jardin du marten (poached eggs, leeks, mushrooms on English muffin) and frittata with potato roast. So disappointing!! Ordered sirloin steak medium and came out well done and tough. It was also cold so sent it back and came back warm well done and tough! When asked how everything was I explained and asked for at least a discount and did not receive one. It was uneatable so did not eat it and still did not not get a discount! Very poor service and management I will never go back and will not recommend to anyone! read more

I do not recommend! Service is slow, food is overpriced and dull, parking is a nightmare, and they automatically charge you 22% tip (for a party of two). The Copper Beech Inn has two restaurants: the elegant Copper Beech restaurant and the more casual Brasserie Pip. We chose the brasserie based on reviews and by viewing menus beforehand. It seemed to have a more enticing menu.......and from the looks of it, other patrons likely agreed because the brasserie was busier than the other restaurant. Brasserie Pip serves classic French brasserie food. Brasserie is the French word for tavern and this tiny restaurant plays every bit the part. In addition to table/bench seating and a small bar, there is an enclosed porch section overlooking the outdoor gardens. Although we couldn't see much at night, I bet sitting on the porch during the day would make for an impressive sun filled afternoon lunch. As for the food and wine, it was excellent. The lamb sausage was terrific and the way it was prepared reminded me of a fajita. Not surprising, food portions were more in line with common european portions rather than jumbo american portions. My only wish was that I had slightly more fish almandine, but we ordered plenty of other food and I was full by the end of the night. Someone at my table had the NY strip with frites and that appeared to be of a decent size. Lastly, if you go, don't skip dessert. The crème brulee and rhubarb cobbler were both superb, and although we didn't order it the chocolate mouse seemed to be a popular item at other tables. By the way, in case you're wondering what the inn's name refers to......it's in reference to a large copper colored beech tree located in front of the inn. read more

We were here last year for Thanksgiving day. Unfortunately, the experience was frustrating because five of us were placed in a tiny corner by a drafty window and a huge plant grazed the backs of our heads during the whole dinner. The food, if I'm being honest, was passible at best--reminding us of cruise ship food--runny, bland, mass produced. The worst of it was that it was Thanksgiving, and inside, many tables had linen tablecloths and napkins. We were seated in the greenhouse area, where there were no tablecloths at all, which surprised us for the price, and because it was a special holiday. We felt like we were sitting at a diner. We asked them to move the plant, or at least shift our table away from it, and the manager refused to do so, because she said there was nowhere to put us or the plant. We asked for a tablecloth, and she also refused, saying that the people who got table cloths on the inside, had booked their reservations well in advance. She also said that they requested the particular rooms that had tablecloths. Having never been to Copper Beech, how would I know that I had to request a tablecloth? Honestly, the whole thing was just absurd. Dinner for the five of us amounted to just over $700, as I recall, and I remember feeling sick at the waste of money, and also embarrassed/saddened because we had an older couple with us to whom we were trying to give a memorable day. Since then, we have driven by Copper Beech many times, tempted to go in and sit at the bar, but we just keep driving. The experience just left such a bad taste in our mouths, no pun intended, that we refuse to give them the business. Don't even get me started on the rundown building itself, that chipping front porch and tasteless decor. All in all, I would say that we could've overlooked so many of the problems at the staff not being so complacent and rude and condescending. If anyone has been around while and remembers what good customer service was like, I'm here to tell you that you're not going to get it at Copper Beach. We are not demanding people, but we do expect, or at least, hope for, some kindness and decency, especially when we're out to spend our hard-earned money. read more

We stayed one night for a quick anniversary getaway and the whole stay was great. We were in the carriage house in back of the property, which was really lovely. You can enter through the house lobby or the private back deck entrance. The room was very large with a huge king (maybe california king bed), writing desk, small bar area, large closet, and large marble bathroom with a gorgeous deep, full length soaking tub and separate marble shower. The place was immaculate with great attention to detail. Bed was on the firm side but very comfy, and linens and pillows were cozy and nice quality. Great value and honestly could have been much more expensive than what I paid. we had dinner and breakfast at the main house restaurant, and food and service were wonderful. very happy we came and would definitely book again for a special occasion getaway. read more

Made reservations months in advance for Christmas Eve dinner. The food was great. The service was not. I'm still honestly not sure what happened, but throughout the meal, our waitress became increasingly confused and bumbling, as if she were having a minor stroke or sneaking shots from a hidden flask between table visits. We watched with perverse anticipation as the remaining waitstaff scrambled to clean up the damage this woman caused - mixed up orders, forgotten orders, spilled ice on the floor, inconsistent or contradictory stories about items on the menu - it was all kind of fun for a bit until it started to become annoying. As we were waiting for the check, she came over to apologize and tell us our food was on the way. When we reminded her we had eaten, she apologized profusely and repeated again that our food was on the way. Then she brought us the check twice. The people next to us ordered three times because she forgot what they wanted? Rest of the waitstaff were very nice and did their best to smooth things over while tending to their own tables, but I simply can't leave 5 stars for this one. I review restaurants based on ambience ( 4+ starts), food ( 3-4 stars) and service (2-3 stars). This is a beautiful place, we arrived and we greeted warmly and the hostess set about to get us to a table and asked another hostess to bring us; though some of our party were clearly looking at other rooms ( and admiring a bridal couple), so instead of warmly offering to wait and encourage to enjoy; we got the rushed glare of I need to seat you and even said so! We sat at a table, nice view, our hosts were very happy. After waiting a moment for a server, we started to order drinks, and oh my, another glare of "could you decide faster". Food ordered and we are enjoying ourselves. Ceaser salad with parmesan bacon excellent, Scallops and wiener schnitzel to die for. Though my wife's chicken was over-cooked. We clearly talked about sharing salads amongst couples; it took a busboy to notice we were using the bread plates to share and brought other plates - where was our server - did she not listen? so dessert, I ordered the creme brûlée, creamy, warm and absolutely delicious. But, I made it clear do not bring me the cookie with chocolate as my wife is allergic, but bring it to my friend who was having ice cream. You guessed it. Cookie came on my dessert and my wife opted not to share. You would ask, why not send it back, well you would have had to have come come buy and ask. I ordered an espresso; full demi-tas, hot and perfect. I would go back for the ambiance, food; but at their prices I would have expected better, friendlier service. read more

We've been here a few times for celebratory reasons (birthdays, achievements, anniversary). The last time we went (June, 2018) will be our last time. Here's why: - They no longer have filet mignon - Water served at room temperature. When we asked for ice water the waiter came back with ice cubes in glasses and spoons to dish the ice cubes out with. - The bread is no longer served in a basket and left on the table. Instead the waiter dished out a piece of bread on each person's plate (that's it one piece per person). That's probably okay anyway as it was as hard as a rock. - Hangar steak - supposed to be cooked medium rare. It was barely cooked at all. There was a LOT of blood on the plate. It was sent back and was cooked a wee bit longer. Still LOTS of blood on the plate. It was a very tough piece of meat. - Hamburger (regular ol' hamburger) supposed to be cooked medium well. Again, it was barely cooked at all. The inside was raw. It too was sent back and came back tough and black on the outside and rare and raw on the inside. Gross. - The third member of our party ordered the lamb and was very happy with it. - The tables are very rickety and rocking. - The music was terribly obnoxious and LOUD. We felt like we were at a dive bar. The ambiance of this restaurant does not call for that sort of music. - Way too expensive for the food that was served and the atmosphere we endured. - We could have done better at Denny's. The inn itself is nicely appointed, with rooms decorated in typical New England B&B charm. Some rooms have semi-private balconies with private bathrooms, others range from two twin beds to larger room and bed configurations. My issue here lies with the service. Breakfast was included, but the breakfast area was chaotic, and the food was just ok. We had to keep reusing our teabags because no one ever came back to our table. Our dishes were touted as "including an arugula salad", but I am afraid 1 tablespoon does not equate to a salad, that's more of a garnish. Checkout also proved to be problematic as their credit card system was not working properly. If you book here, expect to have trouble paying with a different credit card then you reserved with. The owner tried to say it was because I booked with a third party, but I booked directly through their site, and several other customers had the same problem. Had the absolute best dinner here with my fiancé. Super romantic setting and our waiter was so pleasant and attentive. We shared the crab cake app (so good). Shockingly inexperienced, ignorant and not knowledgeable--to the point where we were laughing. The waitstaff is very NICE; pleasant, smiling, eager to please. But incompetent! Didn't know the menu; didn't know basic answers to: if one person orders the prix fixe menu, does the whole table need to order it, too? Or even: is there a pre-dinner prix fixe menu? Reaching across one diner when serving a dish, instead of using the space behind to serve it. Plunking down a bottle so hard the table shook. Offering to show us the dessert menu, when none of those items was included in the ordered prix-fixe menu. It's not that the servers didn't care. I don't think they quite understand why people work, as a matter of fact, instead of just sitting around eating a very high quality of local produce at their beautifully rustic french restaurant, sipping on champagne or upscale cocktails in their european gardens, looking at the copper beech trees shed leaves. In other words, they're pretty much just used to Connecticut darlings and dandies, and suits like me were just out of place really. This is sort of thing you can't imagine paying for when you're in college, and the sort of place you'd imagine paying for when you're nearing retirement, and content in a Buddhist sort of way. read more

The service was perfection except for the bar where the bartender could have been slower and less helpful but I'm not sure how. . . Back to the restaurant. The apps and main courses were delicious and that, combined with the excellence in service rate the restaurant 5 stars. I must admit the dessert went mostly uneaten - not great. I wanted to give this place five stars. But the older bartender was one of the rudest people I have ever encountered. Anyways lets talk about the good. The hostess at the B&B is super nice! Our waiter in the restaurant was amazing! He told us everything about everything! He knew absolutely everything about the wine, entrees and the wild mushrooms that were picked that day! I would give him five stars! I had a filet with wild mushrooms and Todd has fish. The B&B you will want to spend more money to get a nicer room. We stayed the carriage house and it was very hotel feeling and when you first walked in it didn't smell the best. I am guessing it is one of the older houses to stay in. I wish they would of gave me some insight. It was $253.00. Next time I would try the Comstock house. Also I hate those old AC units cut in the walls...they are so noisy and ghetto. The breakfast was perfect! Eggs benedict was amazing. This place is the best if you are looking for great food! It is also super close to Essex. We will come back and visit CT and try out The Copper Beech in again. I hope to receive better service at the bar next time and choose a better room. The grounds are very pretty. read more

From the delicious fresh food used in their meals to the lovely atmosphere and friendly staff this was a win all the way! The heirloom tomato and mozzarella was out of this world, the best I've ever had. My main meal of seared sea scallops over lobster risotto (and I'm talking huge pieces of lobster meant) is now in my top 5 meals of all time! Lovely stay. A few minor cons. Nothing major. I would still stay there again. Breakfast menu is very limited. Diner menu not vegetarian friendly. Rooms need to be updated as they had stains on the carpets, very out dated curtains and wallpaper in the bathroom was peeling off. Jacuzzi bath had no directions so we had to you tube how to turn it on and operate it. We went for a walk in the trail behind the Inn and they had a huge fire pit which they never told us about. It was beautiful, too bad we discovered it the day we we were leaving. read more

We had eaten here in November and enjoyed the experience. Based on that, we returned with family to celebrate a birthday. Sadly, this visit was a huge letdown. Of four adults and one child, there was not one thing served that could be described any way other than mediocre at best - especially considering the price. It was far from the "acclaimed restaurant known for its fine food" that they advertise on their website or one would expect from an old Inn touting Elegance and Sophisticated Cuisine. To start I had the "Flash Seared Tuna" appetizer. Flash seared tuna should not be white. For an entrée, I had a Filet Mignon special, which I ordered very rare - it was more medium-well. For dessert, I chose Crème Brule. I have eaten a lot of Crème Brule in my time - but didn't finish this serving, wasn't worth the calories. Another adult had a Tuna Entrée special, that was again overcooked, unappetizing, and not worth finishing. There is no children's menu, and the waitress had to make a special trip to the kitchen to see what they might be able to offer tonight for an 11-year old that certainly wasn't interested in any of the $20-$30 fancy entrees. A regular menu item, Pan Seared Halibut, is served with Manila clams - imported from somewhere very far away from Ivoryton, CT - considering Ivoryton is practically on the shore where local clams are abundant seems very strange to serve these. This we found out only after inquiring, and the waitress not being familiar even with the standard menu items had to make another trip to the kitchen to inquire. All-in-all a very disappointing birthday celebration. read more

OVERPRICED & STUFFY! They make you feel out of place! Food fair at best! Avoid if possible.

Not what it's cracked up to be... or maybe just an off night? We had dinner just a few nights ago, a group of six ladies on a short gal pals trip. Right away, we sensed that something wasn't quite right with the service. The server who took our order seemed confused, scattered, not at all together. Drink orders arrived okay, but the food didn't. Items we didn't order were brought to the table by another server who was trying to help. Entrees we did order arrived at different times and with delays. Items requested "on the side" were delivered with the wrong corresponding entrees. The manager came by, also helped the serving team, and explained that they were short staffed. The food we had was generally very good, but overpriced. A small salad (which we had hoped to share) was $16 and far too small to be shareable. Entrees were excellent, but overpriced. Four scallops served with lobster risotto for $40; a goat cheese ravioli dish with just four very thin, small ravioli. When the bill arrived, we received two bills! One for someone else's table, and one for our table -- still with incorrect items we didn't order, and missing ones we did. The manager continued to apologize for the service issues. For the money and reputation this restaurant has long held, it was a disappointing experience. read more

Pip has seen many faces in the past and we have been going there for a good many years. In its current incarnation the best that can be said is that the front of the house staff are very professional. The food is good with some occasional home runs. The problem is that the prices have gone through the roof. The main dining room is just not a pleasant place to have dinner especially as it is usually pretty empty. The Brasserie area is a fantastic room. There do seem to be some regulars at the bar who enjoy hanging out. We used to go there at least twice a month. Lately it is a rare outing to go to Pip. In my opinion they need to be less "Cheffy" and get back to being a neighborhood brasserie with a more expansive and less expensive menu, There are too many other choices in the area that offer better food at a more reasonable price point. read more
