So, I'll try to keep this short. We made a reservation for Mother's Day brunch three weeks in advance sight unseen. We're from Bayside, WI and wanted to surprise my aging aunt and twin cousins in Hammond, IN. Any hoot, we arrived not knowing what to expect......long and short, it was absolutely amazing!! The food was prepared as promised, great portions, nice atmosphere and really, really great service!! We plan to go back a couple of times this summer and the Copper room will be on our minds. The Copper Room - Menu! - American Near Me - Hammond, Indiana

The Copper Room is a moderately upscale, soul food dining experience. They also have an event space. It's a little hard to find because it's attached to another business and the parking lot is next to the adjacent building. It's not too far, but there is a little walk to get to the front door. I mention this because both my mother and I have disabilities. The dining room is cozy with mood lighting. The lights could stand to be a bit brighter. Us older folks might have trouble reading the menu in the dark. As for our visit, we went on a Sunday afternoon around 1ish. When we got there no one was there, but when we left the room was almost at capacity. The menu is decent (see pic). My mom and I both opted for the soul platters with half a roasted chicken. We also ordered their maple bourbon Brussel sprouts as an appetizer. I didn't want the brussel sprouts because I felt like it would be too much food. Let me tell you...GET THE BRUSSEL SPROUTS!!! 10/10!!! Imagine a caramel corn glaze with candied pecans as the base of the sauce. I took one bite and it was a wrap. We ate an ENTIRE heap of those things before our food came out. Couldn't stop eating them. Just trust me and get them! We expected to have leftovers but that didn't work out. Best glazed brussel sprouts I've ever had. For the entree we had roasted chicken, sweet potatoes, collard greens, macaroni and cheese and cornbread. The roasted chicken was delicious, but inconsistent. My chicken had a deep browned and heavily seasoned skin. I think it was smoked or grilled because it had a smoky flavor and smell. My mom's chicken looked a bit under seasoned and not as brown, but the flavor was excellent. Hers was juicier and more tender. I'd give it an 8/10. The greens were fine but salty. Also, a little on the mushy side. 6/10. We were divided on the mac and cheese. My mom enjoyed it. Me? Not so much. The dish was dry and overly seasoned (not in a good way). There was no cheesy texture at all. The flavor might have been better if there was a creamier, cheesier texture. I give it a 4/10. Next were the yams. Again, my mom and I disagreed on them. I fairly enjoyed them. My mom wasn't as impressed. Our differences? She prefers her yams SWEET! These were not overly sweet which is exactly why I liked them. I would have been fine were they just a little sweeter, but I thought they were sweet enough. Where the dish could have improved was that the potatoes were a tad undercooked. Another 8-10 minutes would have made a decent dish better. I give the yams a 6/10. Finally, the cornbread. I couldn't tell if it was supposed to be cornbread or corn pudding. It was very moist (wet). It was tasty, but I wasn't sure about the texture. I'd give it a 6/10. The flavor was decent but the texture was off. One big oops on their part was that after we'd already ordered I recalled seeing Facebook ads for weekend brunch. I had forgotten about it and not only did they not mention that they had brunch specials but they didn't even provide a brunch menu. I asked the waitress if they still had brunch specials and she said yes until 3. It was only a few minutes after 1. Had they offered, I would have ordered from the brunch menu. All in all I enjoyed the experience enough that I would give them another try. They are still relatively new (only been open about 4 months or so), and I'm sure they are still working out the kinks, so I will give them some grace. I encourage you to try them. They have some winners that are worth the visit and there are other dishes I want to try. The dishes that I rated moderately might have just been off today. After looking at the pictures and reading the other reviews, I decided to check this place out. It's very confusing that it's a restaurant because when we walked in, there's no one there to greet you. After about 15 minutes someone came out of another room and sat us. The room is nice and there were four other couples when we walked in it was very quiet. There was no music playing, and it was cold. After we were seated and started talking to a few of the other patrons, we asked if they could turn the heat and music on. They only turned on music- it remained cold. Speaking of cold, the ladies bathroom was freezing! They only had one waitress and she was doing her best to take care of everyone. Unfortunately, it took 20 minutes to get a drink. We ordered an appetizer and I was pleasantly surprised that it came out actually even before we had something to drink. We had salmon bites, there were 5 bites that they charged $14!!! Our meal came out before the other two couples that were there at least 30 minutes before we were. I had the catfish Soul platter. They were out of lamb chops greens and steak so ordering was limited. My date had the blackened catfish Alfredo His pasta was cold and the fish was warm. It was not served with any garlic bread. My meal was fine, but the portions for sides was small. Two couples got up and walked out because it was taking so long to get a meal. I made reservations for myself and my family or mother's day. We arrived on time a d had to wait at least fifteen minutes to be seated. Upon being seated the waitress came spilled my water on the table. Very nice waitress. We placed our order with one appetizer ordered. Then we ordered dinner it took one hour and a half. My mom steak was really well done potatoes cold and broccoli Luke warm. My other guest fried chicken had a weird smell and the sides was luke warm. My order never arrived I spoke to the owner and he was very apologetic and would take 15% off the bill. I declined my food and just lefted. It was so disappointing on such a special day. My husband and I were in town and chose this place based on reviews. It did not disappoint!!! I had grilled catfish Alfredo. This dish was cooked to perfection. The fish was very fresh, done but not overdone, seasoned well yet not salty and the Alfredo was creamy and so tasty. It had a slight lemony taste. Delicious! My husband had roasted chicken, Mac and cheese and seasoned potatoes (ikr). He ate every bite and said it was delicious. The atmosphere was nice, the decor was charming. wanted to try it out based off pictures on tik tok. made a reservation for Mother's day and it took them 20 to even seat us, and we did not even dine in their dining room, apparently they used their even space, walked it it was a live entertainment, which i may add sounded terrible, and the music was too loud. we ordered our food right away, after over an hour, we never recieved our appetizers , or any explaination as to why it was taking so long. after an hour they come up to us, and tell us they were out of steak, whuch we ordered an hour ago, whole time we were waiting they had not even started on our food. it was a horrible experience on Mother's Day, after waiting all that time, we ended up walking away and having to wait in line for another hour at another restaurant. we would never dine there again, and it was a horrible Mother's day read more

I'm thinking they are understaffed. Jt took took over 15 minutes to get a glass of lemonade and when it came, it wasn't the flavor I ordered (it was good though), but there weee only 5 seated tables of 2 at the time. They were out of steak, lambchops and greens at 8pm. Don't ask for an appetizer unless you're just searching for disappointment. If you want 5 delicious (and I do mean delicious) LITTLE bites of salmon, then order the salmon bites. They will bring it out in a gold basket just big enough to hold 2 eggs, all for the low price of $14. Thee food did arrive in about 25 minutes, but the blackened fish I had did not look like the pictures that others posted. It was not garnished and the pasta was cold, as if it was cooked and set to the side for awhile. It tasted good, just nowhere near warm. Overall service was slow to the point that a 6th set of people left after sitting unattended too long. They have a good concept, just missing the mark in key areas. Not even going to talk about the cold dining area or the frigid bathroom temps. I think a few of these 5 star ratings came from friends or family. If you aren't ready to open a restaurant, don't do it! read more
