And the visit before this my wife and I treated my sister in law to a Pork Chop Dinner for her birthday and we all ended up with raw chops and were rushed. So this last visit for our end of the year celebration we both were rushed and miss communication service. Upon arrival, we were welcomed to "Freddy's". We were promptly seated and greeted with a friendly waiter named, "Billy". After introducing himself, he let us now about the daily specials. The ribs were fall off the bone. The pork chops and Ribeye steak were perfectly cooked and juicy. As others mentioned, the chicken was not properly cooked. French onion soup delicious as well as the crabcakes. The chianti, lemon drop martini and cold beer were also on point. Overall, a great dinner, with great company and great service. Freddy's is on a continued downward spiral that will surely be the end of this once treasured steak house sometime in the future is my prediction. You can't serve inconsistent, sub-par steaks and continue to think people will keep returning for more abuse and poor quality dining. The tragedy is that this is a long established restaurant featuring a unique dining room with photographs of Northwest Indiana's once revered supper clubs of days long past. The bar area is equally as memorable as it kind of resembles an old train car seating earlier in the 20th century. With a staff of misfits, some without manners and rather crude, plates being removed before you're finished and a manager walking around looking disheveled and rather out of place in a restaurant once considered to be classy. If you're coming for the entertainment, which is Frank Rossi, he takes more break time than he actually does playing or singing to any of his music. He'll spend way too much time singing Happy Birthday to three (3) individual tables than combining them all together and moving onto something more appropriate like Christmas carols since it was December. What they pay this man for, I'll never know because he's not worth his keep. I've been here with numerous dinner guests and alone and you're lucky if everything goes smoothly and the food is excellent. Numerous times, one of us gets very disappointed with our steak or lamb, about the only consistent item at Freddy's is the ribs and chicken, you can count on these two items carrying the day. This last and most recent time, two ( 2) of us including myself had the full slab of ribs, no complaint. The French onion soup outstanding. Our calamari looked liked flattened out earthworms on the pavement that got run over by a car three days ago and were scrapped up and served. Horrid! We mentioned it to our server lady as she looked at us with a cross-eyed expression with hairdo full of frizzy hair and split ends, no class. She did nothing! Had we been with a feisty female, they would have gone back to the kitchen before we touched them. If you can't make calamari as good as or better than your local Italian pizza parlor, don't offer them! Lastly, my friends rib eye was a complete disappointment and this is a restaurant once known to be a fabulous steak house? Bullshit! I've seen far better steaks coming from a Jewel grocery store! It was tragic and not worth the money! No mushrooms. * Ribeye steak ordered medium rare with mushrooms. Very small cut. Not menu specific size. Raw red and bloody and refrigerator cold inside. *Baked potatoes dried out. Waitress seldom seen. Sent Filet back with explanation. Meanwhile, dinner partner cut into his steak. Filet returned barely warmed through and still bloody red. We ate what we could. Manager apologized by offered no recompense for awful meal. Waitress told of what had occurred and told us that 3 other customers had already returned badly cooked steaks that same evening. It was 6:30pm. This place calls itself a Steakhouse. They should know how to cook steaks properly. Our bill was over $140 dollars not including tip. I developed severe abdominal pain/cramping. It's kinda schizophrenic. I was there for a wedding rehearsal dinner just after the Gordon Ramsey-fication. Food was great. I was there for lunch this week, and it was not good. Calamari appetizer looks like a dozen big yellow fruit loops. It was served with a lemon aioli that was so salty it was inedible. Perch was a greatly reduced portion. In my experience Freddy's is a hidden go to treasure in our community. Beginning with warm welcoming by staff giving one a sense of being there before. For being first time I enjoyed comfortable seating, reminiscing with background music and taking full advantage of comfort. I dared to enjoy their own cocktails made special with delicious dinner and desserts. The food was great with the exception of my steak that was very under cooked. I sent it back and it still was not cooked the way I would eat it. Unfortunately I gave it away to another person at my table. I did eat the twice baked potato and it was good. The ribs my friend had he said were tasty but lacking additional sauce on the side. If you want a good steak or a great meal, Freddy's is your place. This time, we were seated right away with no reservation on a Saturday night. Got menus and water immediately, but had to wait a minute for our waitress. She offered the specials right off the bat, and we ordered cocktails and an appetizer...my Cosmopolitan came to me quickly, but my husband had to wait a hot minute for a glass of wine, which unfortunately, he said was oxidized. I asked for a Cointreau Cosmopolitan, and the waitress came back and told us they didn't have Cointreau which seemed odd to me because they have a full service bar. I asked for Grand Marinier instead, and it was one of the best Cosmopolitans I've ever had...and I have had many--enough to know what's good and what's not. We ordered the Coconut Shrimp as an appetizer...the waitress told us there were 4 shrimp to a serving, but there were only 3 when it came out, and it was plated beautifully. They were saucy and cooked perfectly. The sauce didn't especially have over tones of coconut, but it was sweet and limey. Not what I was expecting, but it was good nonetheless. My husband got the filet and a baked potato, and he was surprised--he said the baked potato was perfect, and his filet was melt in your mouth good. I ordered the ribeye, and it was cooked rare, just the way I like it. Very tender, could cut it with a butter knife. My double baked potato was MIA, and when it finally came out, our waitress said she would comp us with a free dessert because of the mix up. They were out of the carrot cake, so I ordered the Limoncello cake--kind of like a Limoncello cheesecake but not...very tart and refreshing and lemony. I'm only giving 4 stars this time around because although the food was great, the service this time was just okay and slightly off the mark for here--it's usually top notch, and you never have to ask for anything, it's almost like the servers have ESP. Tonight it was acceptable, but just not what it usually is. I don't know if this was because it was a Saturday, they were short staffed, the waitress was new--I'm not sure...but like I said it's usually fabulous, and this time, it was good but not up to the standard that Freddy's is known for. Of course we will go back again--the food is great, and one meal that wasn't perfect service is not going to drive us away by any means...and who doesn't love the late 1960's early 1970's vibe or ambiance or whatever they are calling it these days. My grandparents, my parents, and my aunts and uncles all came here for dates and special occasions. First and last time going. Pros: Good waiter service Creamy sweet butter for bread Big portion for poor boy steak sandwich Cons: Raw chicken serverd Raw halibut served Semi-raw appetizers Flat Soda, clear pop Black particles in the water Very salty soup and appetizers Slow service Aprox. 5% credit card fee Arrived at 5pm with a party of 12 to celebrate a birthday. The place had 2 other parties a size 3 and one of 10. Left at 8:15pm. Ordered appetizers and they arrived 45 minutes later (5.:45). Some of the calamari was raw but breaded. The mozzarella sticks were ok. The appetizer platter the mushrooms appeared to have been dipped in salt before being breaded and fried. You could see salt particulars on the mushrooms making them extremely salted. Onion rings were ok. Also noticed one glass of water that had black particulars in it from the pitcher of water. Soup and salads came around the 1.5 hour mark. Chicken and dumpling had no dumplings and the cups were about 1/2 filled and again very salty. The minestrone was good with small chucks of beef and plenty of veggies. 2.25 hours the food arrives. The chicken fingers were breaded and RAW on the inside. The Haliburt 1/2 was cooked and the other 1/2 was still raw. The poor boy steak sandwich was big and good meat. The porthouse was big and cooked as ordered. The chop steak was decent size and cooked as ordered. The baby back ribs were cooked as ordered. They do add a credit card fee, which is not disclosed on the menu or their website. It is around 5%. An Old School Classic !! While on Business in the Hammond area last year I was looking for a 'new' place to eat. The front desk at the Marriot Residence Inn in Hammond recommended Freddy's Steakhouse to me. From what I was told it was a two in one, a local favourite and a throwback classic Steakhouse. When I was getting close to Freddies, I noticed it was in a sort of industrial area, and the building on the outside looked a little sketchy. When I entered, I felt like I went back a few decades in time. Freddies is a remnant of the old school steakhouses that you find in most cities. I was greeted warmly and sat fairly quickly, even though I did not have a reservation. My server who was a great gal greeted me with a smile, went over the features and told me that Lake Perch was a local favourite in Northern Indiana and that it was a feature that night. Now, It is not the first time that I've gone to a steakhouse and ate something else, so I was game. The meals served at Freddy's​, at least mine that night came with a sort of ice cold vegetable salad, with a side of veggie dip. The veggies were fresh, crisp and very high quality. As an appetizer, I ordered a cup of Seafood Chowder, which surprisingly didn't look that appealing, but it was very very good. When my entree came it was very simple in the presentation, lightly battered fingers of perch, but what more can you do to present the dish? I switched to a nice white wine and went to town on those delicious bad boys. I was impressed with the quality and freshness of the fish. it reminded me of catching perch in Ontario and eating them right on the shore. The decor inside is a relic of the past, the staff are older elegant people and the crowd is a good mix of older and younger people. I most certainly will visit Freddy's again and hopefully try their steak next time. read more

Went to dinner to celebrate a birthday tonight. I'm thinking this restaurant was probably popular many years ago. It's obvious the decor is extremely old and vintage. Booths that are red with wood and mirrors up on the walls towards the top of the ceiling. We started by ordering a few appetizers: calamari, saganaki, and the appetizer sampler which consisted of meatballs ribs and garlic bread. The calamari was too chewy and didn't taste fresh. I also received a piece that tasted very fishy. I would not recommend the calamari. The saganaki smelled wonderful but it was burnt. The taste was very offputting. The appetizer sampler is a strange one because it includes ribs and meatballs and garlic bread. The garlic bread tasted like it was soaked in the garlic butter, it was pretty strong. The ribs were the best part of this meal. The meat fell off the bone so easily and it was tender and tasty. They included a little cup of wet naps but most of them are already dried out. It just goes to show that they must've been waiting here for a very long time for someone to order ribs. I'm not gonna mention the meatballs because they were awful and you should never order those. They were very tough and tasted like they were maybe frozen or made weeks ago. They did not taste fresh at all. Just before your entrée you got to choose soup or salad and I think everyone chose salads. The salads were fine. The dressing another story. I ordered ranch but when I tried it it was sour and was definitely not ranch. So instead of ordering another dressing cause I wasn't sure if they would be the same I ate my salad dry. Now this is a steakhouse so most everyone ordered steaks. Although I think they looked OK I didn't try them. What I did order was the lake perch. I couldn't figure out how steakhouses could mess up the lake perch especially in the northwest Indiana location. My perch came and it looked good. But I have to say it was cold. In fact only one of the fish was even remotely warm. That didn't really help with the taste as it was very unappetizing. It also came with a little pile of rice pilaf? But when you look at the rice it was like a yellow rice with carrots and peas in it. The rice was also cold. With dinner you also receive a small loaf of bread that's enough to share between a few people. I thought the bread would be served warm but it wasn't. And it was served with some butter but it was just normal butter. I guess I was expecting something a little bit nicer or more upscale for this experience especially at a steakhouse. All in all I think I will not go back here, and if you're in the area and you know if this location you may have your favorites. But unfortunately there are too many steak houses out there that are 10 times better than this one. I even think eating a chain steakhouse would be better than this location. read more

Really cool atmosphere. Nothing has changed from what looks like the 70's but it was one of the worst steaks I've ever had from a restaurant. Got the porterhouse which is my favorite cut. Ordered medium and came over cooked. The flavor was just off. Can't explain it but it wasn't good. I can cook better steaks at home from sams club on the grill. Went with a big party for work and got 4 appetizers. The fried flaming cheese was good. Mozzarella sticks were okay. Onion rings were good. The meatballs were so hard none of us even tried them except for me. They were NASTY. Not only hard/crunchy but taste was terrible. Had 4 cocktails. All watered down and not much booze at all.
