I have worked with Carol Singh Alvarado several times -- once to buy a home and a second time to sell and find a rental. All three times, she was a dream to work with. She is honest, down to earth, efficient, and thoughtful. I think her biggest asset is the fact that she really gets to know you as a client and truly works with your needs. The process felt very personal and honest. As a result, we drew people in who were also looking to do business the same way. All three processes were so smooth and positive. Yes, Corcoran is a business and some of their contract guidelines, etc are standard to Corcoran and the business model in Brooklyn, but they also attract serious buyers and have access to a huge part of the market. This a glowing review of Aaron Chesky. I really struggled with the apartment process in NYC for my college aged daughter. For two months I joined groups, message boards, I searched Craigs List, etc. I knew I was seeing scam after scam, and what seemed legitimate was either too expensive for a college student or it was gone before I had a chance to grab it. I stumbled upon a listing shown by Aaron Chesky and although that apartment was also already spoken for, Aaron found the perfect apartment for us and streamlined the process. It is comical to me that in searching his name before signing, I confirmed that he was legitimate and that the apartment was not a scam from a poor review of his services on this site. When I see bad reviews I try to remember that people in the service industry deal with some very difficult people, and difficult people are almost always the ones most likely to take the time to let everyone else know how poorly they were mistreated. I am so confident in the location and the apartment we have secure. Aaron was responsive, available, and talked me through the whole process. We were able to do everything remotely. So whether you are like me, remotely looking for housing for a student or for a theatre position, or whatever your needs, I would trust Aaron to steer you towards your property and get you through the process! read more

On weekends the Tennant's are completely on their own and if your having an issue Managelent completely ignores callls, texts and emails. By Mon the trash rooms look like the inside of a garbage truck. We've also had a string of packages being stolen which management has been fully aware of. My roommate and I looked at a 3bd with the clear intention of bringing in a 3rd roommate. The listing was posted as $2100 a month, we were offered a discount to $1950 a month until we found a roommate. That sounded nice until we were told the rent would shoot up if we found a third person, AFTER all our application materials had been submitted, that we had been gathering for about a week. Aaron and the landlord he was working with would not tell us how much it would shoot up to no matter what. He said he couldn't tell??? How can you not tell? If anything it should've just went back to $2100 as originally listed! I mean it's a three bedroom after all. Would it have shot up if we had came with three people ready to sign a lease from the get go? When we told him we were only gonna be able to do $2100, as listed, they pulled the offer. They just saw an extra person they could get money from and tried to pull some slick shit. Don't go with these guys they're a bunch of assholes who don't even play this real estate game intelligently. Like if you're going to try to do something that stupid at least don't do it so plain as day. He could've told us about the price jump before we went through all that shit. My experience with Wassim Fakhereddine was incredibly frustrating and unprofessional. He was barely responsive and as far from transparent as you can possibly imagine. He strung me along for a week about an apartment showing only to cancel (only after I emailed the day of the showing) saying "the super canceled on us". Hello all, I met with a person named Wil Nelson who first off was unresponsive as he asked me to text him in regards to my budget( I have section 8). When I did that he still didn't reply. I had to keep calling him to ask when I could come see the place. Finally he told me( not asked) if I could come in and see the apartment in Brownsville Brooklyn on 3/8/23. When I got to the place I had my daughter with me and he looked like he didn't want to even help me up the stairs with the stroller. I got to the apartment and he was very short with me even though I was trying to make small talk with him. He seemed annoyed like he didn't want to be bothered. After I viewed the place I asked him how soon were they looking to rent the apt, he stated ASAP but there were 6 other applicants and that afterwards he would email me an application. He never emailed me the application. A total waste of my time, and very unpleasant.I thought with him being from the neighborhood that he'd be in a position to help but I guess I was wrong.My advice is to be pleasant with people, you never know when you might need that person one day. read more

I recently rented an apartment in NY through Corcoran and my experience was great. Moving from out of state, I needed a person that I could trust to be honest and communicative. I began the search on my own, and found that it was almost impossible to secure an apartment without an agent. After inquiring about a property, I was put into contact with agent Christian Jimenez at Corcoran. Although the property was unavailable, he sent me more available properties. I sent him a list of over 20 properties that I was interested in, many of which were not listed on Corcoran's website, and he reached out to every single one of them. He attended open houses for me, sent me videos, and got me multiple applications. He responded to texts, emails, and phone calls almost immediately. While I ended up signing a lease at an apartment that I had reached out to prior to working with Christian, I felt the need to praise him for the work that he did. I spoke with at least 50 other agents throughout NY, and none of them were even comparable Christian or the level of service and hospitality that he provided me with. Although we earn a good living doing what we do, we know most landlords prefer tenants of the reliably corporate variety. My broker and I met her at the open house, and I was immediately struck by how warm, genuine, friendly, and professional she was. She was knowledgable about both the apartment and the landlord, and allowed me sufficient time to properly view and photograph the place despite the crazy amount of open house appointments she had that day. Worked with an agent from this office and her work habits left a ton to be desired. She would take forever to get back to me and had little to no answers to even the simplest of questions. She did end up showing me 2 coops and neither came even close to what I described I was after. Neither coop was her listing and she was muttering through the basics, reading info about them off the sheets that we found in both apartments (with other agents' names on them). I can't even recall her name as I then switched to another agent from a different local agency. I did originally expect a lot more from a brand like Corcoran. This morning I looked up that office to try to recall the agent's name and she seems to have since departed for an even bigger brand. Oh well. Maybe the size of brand does matter, I don't know. I was forwarded to Carol Singh Alvarado by a colleague once I began my search for a 1 bedroom apartment with specific neighborhoods in mind and Carol was wonderful! She was just incredibly thoughtful, patient and understanding of my needs and wants. I provided her with my prefs and price point. She would reply back with one word answers or posts of apts that were way to expensive. When I replied by saying that is too expensive, she asked what were my prefs...I scrolled down the email and they were the first thing i put. I'm like "are you even reading my emails?" and I told her I cannot work with someone who doesn't even take the time to read their clients emails. Don't rent from these people, they don't care about what you want, just how much you have...Btw I'd give them a zero star if i could read more

If there was a way to give less stars I would. We had an awful experience with Lakeisha M. Edwards. She could not have been more unprofessional. From her condescending remarks to coming to the lease signing without a pen to bad mouthing us to our potential landlords, she obstructed us from renting this lovely place from some very lovely landlords. She refused to even meet us at scheduled times, citing her busy schedule. She has two rental listings... Not sure how her schedule is busier than two full-time employed clients. She was the worse. If you see her listing, run the other way. Any landlord that uses her should expect to get less for their home or apartment by doing so. I wish there was more I could do to report her to her current broker or to the real estate board. She should not have a license. read more

When we looked at our apartment, the porch was unfinished. The agent assured us it would be finished the week after we moved in (at the latest). We've lived here three months, there's no sign of the porch being finished and it getting done "the week after we moved in" was clearly never a realistic prediction. Looking back, I certainly feel silly for believing him. The agent, Quinn, either lied to us or was misinformed. Either way, one star. We wouldn't have moved here knowing it would take this long. We were also told by another Corcoran agent that the apartment had central A/C. It doesn't. Just an old box on the wall that's not connected to anything. I have lived in NYC for 10 years and moved quite a bit in this time. Therefore, I have had to deal with a lot of agents, and to be perfectly honest 95% of them have lived up to the stereotypical characteristics we hear about real estate agents (hint: not very good characteristics). However; Carol Singh is the first person to shatter the stereotype. I worked with Carol to rent my apartment out. She was amazing. She found a very suitable renter in 3 days. Further my building is a coop and needed to interview the renter and Carol was very organized and diligent in ensuring that the board interview was conducted and approval was received well within the time required. Carol then continued to provide support and perfect service as an agent when, unfortunately, I had to back out of a lease already signed with the renter. She was very patient and understanding and did everything she could to get me out of the lease. And she was successful in doing so, which relieved me of an incredible amount of stress. And throughout this process, she was always there, working to make sure that everything worked out smoothly and with the least amount of stress to me, even though this unfortunate situation caused her to lose out on her commission. I know other agents who, in such a situation, would be downright angry and highly unprofessional. This was not the case with Carol. Throughout the time I worked with Carol, she has been very professional, diligent, organized and resourceful. I will definitely be using her for all my real estate needs going forward. Yikes, if only I had looked at Yelp before attempting to purchase a house through Cocoran. The buyer's market is rough, and we decided to have the seller's agent handle the transaction from our side as well to make our offer more competitive. I think in general, this works out fine for both parties, but with Tim Stanard at Cocoran, it was a complete nightmare. We basically had put in a verbal bid and had it accepted. We were drawing up paperwork and working with an inspector when all of a sudden, Tim becomes unavailable. After many many phone calls, it turns out that the buyer decided to go with a higher offer. No explanations, no up dates, no chance to counter offer since ours was (I thought) the only deal under consideration. I understand that Tim had to represent the seller's best interests, but I think there are a lot of ways he could have gone about doing that without leading us to believe that the house was actually available to us. The lack of communication and behind the back dealings were totally unethical. Definitely an AVOID on Tim Stanard and Cocoran. read more

My wife and I were looking for the perfect apartment because we were pregnant with our first child, and so of course we had a very specific set of criteria. Carol was so patient with us, driving us around for visits and conferring with us after we had the chance to discuss each potential place. She really listened to us and took our needs and desires very seriously. It was clear that she wanted us to find the right home and that she finds joy in uniting her clients with the space that will bring them the most happiness. The process took months, mostly because we were so picky. And Carol never made us feel like we were a drag or indecisive. She did, however, share candid opinions and helped to usher us toward and away from places (before and after showings) based on her own experience and vibes on the situation, as it related to our needs. I really can't speak highly enough of her caring and friendly service - and she was highly professional from the first time we spoke on the phone throughout the lease signing at our fabulous new residence. The broker was fine but the apartment we got through them was a disaster from start to finish. When we first moved in, the apartment was filthy (bathtub was literally brown with grime, there was rotten fish in the unplugged freezer which - once opened - filled the entire apartment with a disgusting odor, and the appliances looked like they hadn't been cleaned in approximately a year). That is not what I call move-in condition for a multi-thousand dollar a month apartment - or any apartment for that matter. The apartment itself was built so terribly that the condo owners, we found out, were actually suing the management company. There was no insulation in the walls. Period. The first year we lived there, our neighbor's apartment flooded from a burst pipe causing them to move. They tried to "fix" our piping but managed to just put a large hole in the drywall that let cold air in all winter long. Oh, and this was a place where we paid for our heat and electricity. Though I had asked for past statements from the previous renter our broker was "unable to provide them." Then, a few months ago, our apartment floods. We had to move immediately and thankfully had renters insurance to pay for a hotel. There were thousands of dollars in damage to the apartment which was essentially totaled. They took out huge portions of the ceiling spreading drywall dust everywhere (which I had the pleasure of breathing when I packed up our undamaged items and put them in a storage unit. I lost my voice entirely after 10 hours of this.). Despite the fact that the landlord clearly has to redo the entire apartment (considering the extent of damage to floors and walls) we were charged $1170 from our deposit because of some "kitchen handles" and "portrait holes" in the wall. As a real estate company working with landlords, they should be held to higher standards or have their brand suffer. I will never trust Corcoran again. read more

I get kind of crazy when I'm searching for an apartment and Kristin was always responsive to my emails and texts when I needed her. As I saw all 300 apartments that I wanted to see (only a slight exaggeration), I noticed that she was always on time for appointments and was completely professional when dealing with me and listing brokers. When I found the one, she helped me successfully negotiate the terms of the lease and even put together my documents into an organized, readable document to submit to the landlord. If I hit a snag, she was on it immediately. After I signed, she followed up to make sure everything was ok with the apartment. I've never had such a good experience with a broker before. Kristin listened to me and made sure I felt valued and respected. She was honest about everything and very knowledgeable. I highly recommend her if you're done trying to tackle NYC's real estate market on your own. read more

I had so many issues with my apartment (managed by Solar Management, a nightmare of a company), and got zero help from Aaron. He told me he would be there to listen to my complaints and relay them all over to Solar (they never answered me calls or emails)... but he never helped. The apartment he rented to me was right above the boiler room in the building, and that was never mentioned to me. I had one negative experience renting from them in 2008, when the renter backed out of the lease after I signed it. Idiotically, I decided to purchase a house with them this winter and was unsurprised, though still disappointed, to have an unpleasant experience. I worked with Andrea Yarrington, who was difficult, dishonest and clearly on the side of the seller, not to mention a little crazy. She preyed on my inexperience and barraged me with inappropriate, inaccurate, manipulative e-mails and phone calls during a long and costly legal battle, which was only exacerbated by her meddling. At a certain point, when I had wisened up to her brand of annoying and disingenuous business tactics, it actually became sort of comedic - like, do you really think I'm this stupid, that I'm going to continue falling for your ploys? That being said, she's just trying to get hers so I can't give Corcoran one star, especially when it seems like succeeding the real estate business requires being shady and machiavellian. Even so, I would recommend being wary of anyone who works there if you're buying and bringing your own broker instead. read more

Extremely unprofessional. When working with the likes of Jonathan Tager, be mindful that they might be using you as a bait to get a better offer. Our offer was accepted and as we were working on the contract having paid for the house inspection, we were informed that the seller accepted a higher offer and now if we still wanted the house we had to offer more! The whole operation was a scam where Jonathan told us we will close with a full CO yet a week into the contract deliberations the seller's attorney added a rider into the contract saying they want to close with a temporary CO! I would not be surprised if it were a deliberate act to slow down the process and shop around. Working with Jonathan and the seller Yael Schultz was a less than one star experience. I worked with Jason B and he was absolutely the most arrogant agent I've ever worked with. He was constantly degrading my roommate and I when we tried negotiating the price of the unit we wanted to close on. Using language like "unfortunately for you..." and many other unfriendly words, it was not a pleasant experience. On top of that, he was an extremely poor communicator. I had to call him every day for an update which ended up being non-updates. The apartment is still listed on the market at a price point he told us wasn't possible. I can't speak on behalf of all the agents at compass however my experience with Jason has Deterred me from working with this agency ever again. She sent me a plethora of listings every week and was extremely helpful and knowledgeable during the open houses. Warning - be careful when considering to work with Corcoran and sign any contract with them. They have been inflexible and incredibly greedy. We feel robbed. Our short story: we were looking to sell our place with 2 of their top brokers and hastily signed a contract. Before any work was done by the brokers (before we even came close to putting our property on the market or publicizing) we decided to sell it to our neighbor and friend. Since no work had been done on our property by the brokers except for maybe a 30 minute consultation, we asked Corcoran to reduce their fees by half. We thought this was more than reasonable considering they had done almost no work on the property (no open house, no publicity, nothing!). They refused to alter the contract, insisting that they will take 5% of our sale price, despite the fact that we are doing an inside sale with our neighbor. Again, they did not find this buyer and did NO work in terms of bringing our place to market. We spoke with the manager, Michael Sorrentino, and he yelled AT US for even asking about this. He insisted that because we signed the contract, not because of any actual work that was done by the group, he is entitled to the 5% sale price. He refused to negotiate and became extremely hostile and unpleasant. Other brokers in the area have told us that they would absolutely negotiate in this circumstance. Obviously Corcoran feels they are too good, and too greedy, to do so. It is painful to us that this company and its branch manager care about only one thing: to make the most money for themselves. They do not care about their clients or what is fair. This is our experience with them, and we hope that no one else makes the same (incredibly expensive and heartbreaking) mistake. read more

When I reached out to Carol, I (think) I was pretty clear in my indecisiveness so did not expect much as why would someone spend time and energy in what could end up not being a money making move? Carol called me within hours and met me at the house within a day to answer any and all questions I had. She was professional, thoughtful, provided great insight and did not seem agitated with the fact that I had not made a decision. She did not try to push me even for 5 minutes to sell the house right away (which, as we all know, would provide the most commission to any realtor). I also know that I was extremely lucky that it was Carol who was in charge of what was clearly an impulsive and irrational decision. She didn't take advantage of my clear distraction and lack of involvement. She is professional, ethical and worked extremely hard to get the best person for my needs - not the first person who financially qualified.
