A converted farmhouse-type style with wrap around porch built in 1868 by a man famous for saving the life of Stonewall Jackson and used for hosting church services. I come here to eat but also to soak in the ambience. Ladies, If you were born and raised in Bluffton and you know everyone,The Cottage is the place you congregate for afternoon refreshment. I get a kick out of quietly sitting alone or with a friend or family and just appreciating the buzz of happy people. Weekends can get hectic because it is one of the places where visitors go to experience the "south". So be prepared to wait a good long while for a table. Tables in general are placed very close together and if you must excuse yourself during tea or lunch to visit their teensy loo, suck it in and squeeze around chairs to get by. I prefer a lazy, quiet weekday afternoon and a chair that offers a view of the locals chatting away sharing their news with friends. I also enjoy a great many menu offerings during breakfast, lunch and tea including Island Shrimp Scramble, Fuskie Farmer or Bluffton's Blue Craft for breakfast or Crab, Corn, Bacon, Cajun Cream Sauce in Puff Pastry and Fried Green Tomatoe Caprese for lunch. Desserts are indulgent and my personal favorites are Hummingbird cake and Carmelized Apple Cider Tart. If you are so inclined you can reserve an Afternoon Tea that is delightful. read more

Visited here for dinner last night and ordered the dinner special: cauliflower-encrusted halibut with lump crab and hollandaise served over Asian style zucchini sautéed with sesame seed oil and served with Parmesan mashed potatoes. My fish arrived and was nothing like the special I ordered. What I received was seared halibut with pineapple salsa served over rice and peas. I sent the dish back to the kitchen and, 15 minutes later, my dish arrived. However, there was not cauliflower crust on the halibut, the zucchini was blandly steamed and not sautéed with sesame oil, and the Parmesan mashed potatoes contained cheddar and mozzarella cheese, with no Parmesan in sight. Clearly, this was a dinner special fail on both the wait staff, chef, and kitchen staff. What's more is that the management never inquired about the dining experience I was having. Clearly, this was also a management fail. C'mon, people! Get your act together before you serve up another dining fail. read more

The short review: Charming restaurant with good food. Not for health nuts. The long review: The restaurant oozes with charm and the food oozes with sauces. The space is small but not uncomfortably cramped. Tables on the porch are a good option for people watching. The menu is heavy on seafood but there are other options. How this small restaurant kitchen puts forth such an extensive menu is a mystery to me. My last visit was with a party of six for lunch so I made reservations. Our waiter accommodated our jovial, indecisive group with good humor and very good service. Our choices were pot pie, pizza, cashew chicken wraps, burger and some kind of chicken sandwich. Everyone was pleased with the food, except the chicken wraps arrived unwrapped and there was no possible way to wrap the two narrow lettuce leaves around any reasonable amount of the chicken mixture. We all shared the fried green tomato appetizer. Blech. Yes, I know, everyone *raves* about the fried green tomatoes. What that means, in my opinion, is that they are mad about the sauce that disguises the tomatoes. As far as the tomato itself, it's an after-thought. Why restaurants insist on serving this southern staple using tomatoes that have no taste is beyond me. Oh wait, I know. Because people gobble it up like there will be no tomorrow with tasty tomatoes. I would be so impressed to see a restaurant offer fried green tomatoes, "when in season." Okay, off the soapbox. My only complaint about the food is that the sauces are far too heavy-handed on just about everything. The kitchen obviously considers the sauces to be an equal part of the entree, rather than as a complement to the entree. If rich, southern cooking served in a casual, homey atmosphere is appealing to you, this is an excellent choice! read more

AWESOME FOOD! Charming is a term oft-used to describe this restaurant, but it really should be the picture alongside the word 'charming' in the dictionary. When the breakfast burrito arrived the size of a football you know you have hit the mother-lode of comfort food! My classic Eggs Benedict was perfect, perfect, perfect. The "team" concept of serving tables was a well-coordinated effort. We never wanted for any attention and all the servers were pleasant if not comical with one commenting on the "radio voice" of my companion while another, walking by, quipped, "Yeah, radio face, too!" He meant no disrespect, and we all had a good laugh. The salt-caramel rolls in the case behind our table beckoned, but by the time we were done with the hefty servings of truly fabulous food, we had to walk away without them. Go. Indulge. We were staying at the Marriott Resort and Spa on Hilton Head Island and found this place on Yelp. The menu sounded good and it was, we ended up driving out there twice. It's a small place in an old house, so tables are limited. The first time there we barely made it before closing which I think was 3:00 pm. My husband had the chicken salad, which had goat cheese, walnuts etc. he raved on about it. I had the chicken pot pie with a flaked crust cut in half and more of a soup like filling poured between the 2 slices, it needed more chicken, and a thicker consistency, but it was good. We sampled a few desserts from the bakery case, a lemon bar and cookies, very good. Our return was Sunday morning with my husband ordering the corned beef hash and poached eggs, a thumbs up from him. I had the poached eggs on fried green tomatoes, very good. Once again we tried a few different cookies from the bakery case, and they were great with coffee and tea. The staff was super nice and remembered us from the previous visit. They had to turn away lots of people on that first day and they could stay open later and keep people coming in. Surprised at that, turning away paying customers when it's still so early. The Main Street here is lined with homes that have been turned in to different businesses, such a cute town. I found The Cottage, when trying to find a place for sn afternoon tea. The waitress said they stopped the teas and it won't be coming back because it occupied the tables to long and there were to many no shows. That was my only disappointment, I never did find an afternoon tea setting while on vacation, but this place was a gem. read more

This quaint little restaurant was the best part of our vacation. The staff was so friendly and made sure we had everything we needed at all times. But the food! OMG the food!!! It was delicious. Went to this place on a weekday for lunch and it was kind of a mob scene. Really cramped outdoor patio and although it was cute was hard to navigate. Restroom is only one stall which was also annoying to try and wash my hands. Fish tacos were some of the best but VERY greasy and definitely did not feel healthy. One of the hostesses was a bit rude, but our server took excellent care of us, and the prices (which felt a bit high from reading the menu) ended up feeling ok as my salmon salad was one of the best salads I have ever eaten. Wasn't offered a kid's menu when seated, either (by same hostess) - admittedly I did not ask as our kid was so hungry, we needed to get an order in pronto - so we pieced something together. We happened upon this gem guide by accident. We had a few hours to kill before our hotel room was ready, so drive to Bluffton. The history of this old house is amazing. Hotter than you know what, so we went inside to eat. There were several things we thought about ordering but when the server came and explained the specials, we both got the fish tacos. They were amazing. Whitefish pan seared and in large chunks in the taco. The flavor was different, mild and didn't overpower the delicate fish flavor. Add a bit of cheese and cabbage and it was great! The mixed green salad was refreshingly simple but good. I wish we'd have chosen a dessert. I've never seen as many homemade desserts in my life!! Probably 6 tall layer cakes in a cake cabinet. Probably 5 pies in a pie cabinet. And couple dozen assorted beautiful pastries in a regular bakery showcase. Amazing!! Stop by this place. It's billed as a tea room, but it's more like a lunch/dinner cafe. I did see the tea. But you'd miss the best part of you only had tea!! read more

Coming from DC, and found this place on Yelp. We ordered fried green tomato, liver and onion, shrimp and grits. They are delicious. The liver was tender, and covered by fried onions and bacon, I loved it. My wife also enjoyed the fried tomato (a little pricier than i expected, 4 pieces fried tomato was $17), and shrimp and grits were good as well. The service was exceptional, and the restroom is super clean. Strongly recommend and will return. read more
