Food remains decent, in fact it was good. Restaurant experience was unfortunately overshadowed with a tone or racism. We were asked three times if were were locals despite having said yes the first time. The lady server had to watch me write on their contact tracing sheet that we are from a local area in nearby Picton. When ordering, she was impatient, when I was clearly speaking perfect English when ordering our food. Maybe it was my mask that made it difficult to understand ( sure, let's give it the benefit of the doubt). Current owners of the pub have changed. It didn't used to be like this when Nat and Drew operated it. It didn't help that there were patio customers, all non-minorities, who stared my family and I down while waiting outside to be seated. These were customers who were otherwise facing the wall before we arrived, only to turn their heads for 15 minutes glaring at us, sending a message that we looked different and didn't belong there. But this latter comment is no fault of the new pub owners. Just pointing out the harsh reality of a small town off-season. Picton is full of tourist 3 seasons our of 4. Tourist will continue to come from all different backgrounds. Look elsewhere for equally decent food. Nat and Drew continue to operate 555 Brewing Company on the same Main Street stretch. County Canteen was recommended by our bed and breakfast host as a local favourite. Got the nachos to start. Either we're piranhas or they were just that good because everything was all gone in ten minutes. I ordered the mussels next which came in a delicious sauce of fennel, tomato and garlic and one loaf of bread for dipping. Save for one bad mussel, the dish was light, flavourful and perfect for a summer night. Live music, good food, cool vibes. 10/10 would return! read more

A close friend from Vancouver was visiting the 'East Coast' (I suppose this is all relative) for the week. For the weekend, we decided to explore Prince Edward County with another pal who's based in Georgetown. We stayed in Picton in a little place just off of Main Street. On Saturday night, we decided to explore downtown after an eventful day cruising around the County and checking out wineries. Thanks to Yelp for directing me here! The County Canteen has a small patio; there's also a spacious dining room inside. The decor is eclectic with hipster staff walking around. It was packed so without a reservation we were told that it would be an hour wait. We decided to go to the bar to grab drinks as we waited. The County Canteen has a lot of beers and ciders on tap; there's something for everyone's taste. Once seated at a table, we had an opportunity to check out the menu. And if you'd like to know, the wait time ended up being much shorter. The menu had something for everyone, even for the pickiest of eaters. I had the fish tacos (who doesn't love tacos in the summer) with a Peach+Blackberry cider. Great ambiance, excellent service, and delicious food made the CC a 4-star restaurant. Overall, I would recommend if you want a casual evening in Picton and are interested in trying out some local drinks. I got a beer tasting flight and my server was very helpful in recommending some choices since I wasn't familiar with all the local craft breweries. He spent the time getting to know what I like and finding the right brews for me! Let's talk about the County Canteen. They have a nice sized patio area with an awning to keep you out of the sun, or lots of seating inside. For food, I ordered the Wollenburger ($17.5) and it was awesome. Even though it came stacked with numerous tasty toppings (it's as big as your head), the burger still stayed together, and the bun held up. Their fries are bomb. My boyfriend got a fish and chips ($16.5) and *omg* guys: It. Looked. So. Good. A large piece of fish, perfectly battered and fried. Even the tartar sauce seemed like it wasn't just your average tartar sauce. We both had nothing but great things to say about the food. For drinks, I had beer, and they had some really interesting craft beer options on tap. Flying Monkey hibiscus beer? Sign me up. Finally the overall experience. We got there during peak dinner rush and the servers didn't miss a beat. They were friendly and efficient. The music choice was good, the decor cozy yet not "your typical old pub" looking. Scott and the County Canteen Team catered my wedding in September. When I tell you that his team went above and beyond to provide the most wonderful meal to our guests... I feel that it would be an understatement. We had the most beautiful grazing table that guests are still talking about made of mostly local ingredients that highlighted the best of PEC. Scott was hands on in bringing our desired menu to life and worked with us to ensure all of our guests (meat eaters and vegans alike) were well fed and taken care of. Miserable weekend weather so we didn't really get a flavour of the region until we decided to have dinner at The Country Cateen. Glad we did! Service was excellent and very friendly. We started with two Flying Eddy beers which hit the spot. My wife and I shared a very fresh a good portioned Greek salad. She ordered the fish tacos and I had the loyalist (wagyu) burger. We found ourselves here for an early lunch courtesy of the awesome Yelp reviews. It looked very slow but a friendly server came outside and showed us to a seat on the patio, which filled up quickly with locals and tourists alike. Our server was very sweet and thorough. We ordered the charcuterie platter for 2 and a couple of Caesars followed by a glass of Pinot Noir for me. The platter was exceptional, served on a gorgeous rustic log platter with some really yummy local sausages and preserves. Our server explained what everything was. I was not a fan of the Pinot Noir that the server suggested. It was local, but lacked any body or real flavour. I appreciate they're featuring local wines, but this one was amiss for me. We didn't try the fries here, but every table seemed to be ordering them. Maybe give them a try and see what the buzz is. The food was definitely more on the pub style side but presentation os very well done. Looks like they are a favourite place for bands and theme nights. I would come back here. read more

I love Prince Edward County, but overall I would say that the restaurant pickings are slim especially compared to Toronto. I am giving the County Canteen a 5-star rating on a modified, more generous PEC scale. This restaurant has live music and a dog-friendly patio. The patio is shady at dinner time which is nice. Excellent service and great wine selection (I would expect nothing less!) I recommend the fish tacos and fish and chips - absolutely delicious. Ask for their house ketchup - it has cumin in it and is "Moroccan" style. read more

Dropped in for dinner on a Saturday night, no reservations. Maybe we should have made reservations, but the wait was only 5 to 10 minutes, so that's pretty good. The food was fabulous! Great gastropub fare, and with plenty of legit gluten free and vegetarian options as well. We started with the charcuterie platter - excellent selection of local artisan meats and cheeses - delicious! The vegetarian rice paper rolls are a tasty take on the Vietnamese standard. The house fries are excellent - crispy, tasty and accompanied by a nice garlic aioli and ketchup so you don't have to choose. The Khaosan wings are fabulous - nice big wings, tasty, well balanced heat and sweet. And we finished off with one of the best crème brulees I have had in a while. It was wonderful, with a light thin crust and beautiful custard. Yum! Staff are very kknowledgeable, easy going and friendly. It's nice to see people maintain a sense of humour even when they are getting slammed by traffic. And they are pretty easy going and willing to accommodate requests. On top of all that, we had all that food, a couple of drinks as well, and the bill with tax and tip was just over $100. Nice! I highly recommend his place if you are in the vicinity. read more

I did not like the menu for food or drinks. Bad serving sizes . Trying to hard to be a "hipster" place or whatever. It would be nice to get regular food but you have no choice at this place. They dont have normal food. Or beer. Call me old fashioned but thats just not right. Also my waiter smelled like he had been sucking on The tap of one of the many craft beers available. We went here on a Saturday night with a group of 12 - 8 adults and the rest kids. They were very accommodating and service was quick, everyone was so friendly. Never been here before, but may never be back. Walked in around 10:15 on a Friday night to grab a drink with my brother and son. There was outside seating for diners, and we were just looking for a drink and place to hang, so we walked past the sign that said please wait to be seated (almost every bar in the States is seat yourself). My brother went to hold the door for the waitress going in, and she said something about us walking by the sign that said please wait to be seated. My brother apologized and said we were just planning to grab a couple drinks, and she was pretty obnoxious in telling us that we had to see her (per the sign) before we went in. We left immediately because of her rudeness and went to the Acoustic Grill, where we were able to grab a seat at the bar immediately. I am not sure if this is standard conduct for a restaurant in Canada, but I would be a little more respectful of customers and not be snide in my welcoming remarks if I expect people to want to visit my bar/restaurant and return. read more

We came here with a large party - 6 adults and 4 kids - and they accommodated us all in a nice private room at the back. They were super friendly and even brought out colouring pages and crayons for the kids. Food was all great! Walked in on a busy Saturday night in July and the server immediately split two tables in half to allow us to and another couple to sit. Small, but nice atosphere. They had just changed to a bunch of new taps so a lot of the drinks we wanted to try were gone but they still had lots of good options. Server was really great with everything, we ordered the pulled pork and the smoked meat sammie with a side of cauliflower + tomato soup, both meals were excellent, my girlfriend swears its the best pulled pork sandwich she's ever had! Came here for a bachelorette, we had reservations for 830pm for 8 people. We had a private room in the back. It all started out great, there was live music and it was busy. We were seated quickly ordered drinks and were left. We sat with empty drinks and waited to order. When we did order our meals nobody attended to us further. We spoke to the manager who told us we are busy and to wait. It had been 60 mins with the bride having a empty glass in front of her. After 90 mins I spoke again to the manager who said they are busy and we are a group. I explained that we should not have to wait for this long to be offered a drink. She dismissed me and I returned to the group. Our food finally arrived but was cold and burnt. Our server did not come to check so we ate cold terrible food because we were so hungry. When the bills came a 18% tip was automatically given to each bill. I wouldn't have tipped at all let alone 18%. It was a terrible experience. read more

One of our meals had a long piece of hair wrapped around one of the wings. We didn't make a big deal but let the server know at the end. This seemed like a pretty standard gastropub, but based on our one experience having dinner and drinks here, it wasn't anything special. The beer and wine menus are pretty large. I wanted to try something new, and said what kinds of beer I liked and didn't like, but the waitress ended up suggesting something that didn't seem to fit my description and that I did not end up liking. The waitress also suggested ordering an appetizer, since the kitchen was quite busy and there could have been a longer wait for our meals. So, we started with the soup of the day, which was a tasty cauliflower puree, with curry flavours. The rest of our food didn't take that long after all, but it was slightly underwhelming when it arrived. I had the Khaosan Road Wings - they tasted pretty good, but were difficult (fun?) to eat since they had all three bones still attached. Artistic presentation. My boyfriend had the Korean Pork Sammie, which was fine, but some of the flavours seemed to compete with each other instead of work together. The fries were alright, just normal (they came with a plum sauce (?) instead of ketchup, though). The atmosphere is nice, though, lots of wood and a rustic feel. There was a guy playing live music on his guitar starting at about 8:40 on a Saturday night, and he was quite good (and the volume was appropriate! We could hear his music, but could still hear each other talk)! So, the County Canteen isn't a bad place to go, especially if you didn't get a reservation anywhere else. read more
