I thought the restaurant experience was good - the service was good, the ambiance is good, the view is definitely worthwhile - but the food is what earns this place 3 stars. Their freshly made bread is fantastic, but I got the mixer plate - one rib, 2nd cut marbled brisket, and sausage plus garlic mashed potatoes and side salad - and found it a little less than great. Don't get me wrong, it was satisfying, and they give you a hell of a lot of food (especially if you get bread), but, truth be told, I've had better barbecue since I've been in Austin. Would I recommend the restaurant? Maybe. The restaurant is a decent place, and the view is great, but I might recommend somewhere else if you're looking for some mind-blowingly good Texas barbecue. If you're looking for a nice night, maybe for a date or something, I might suggest this place. If you're a local, this place is definitely worth trying at least once. read more

Wow... for the longest time, my favorite BBQ joints in Austin had been 1) Rudy's BBQ and 2) Salt Lick (#2 only bc of the distance). Now I haven't been to the newer Salt Lick in Round Rock, but I tried County Line for the first time this week. I had a meat-lite combo with sausage and brisket, which came w/ one of the best coleslaws I've ever tasted. Sausage was average and brisket was savory. Nothing was horrible or dry, but nothing really made me drool either. I'd love to come back again and try other items on the menu. read more

Decent bbq restaurant with a great view. While the actual bbq may not be on par with some other Austin bbq joints, the bbq here is still delicious and worth trying if you're looking for a great atmosphere and friendly service. The restaurant has a casual country feel to it that blends together well with the food and service. In addition, the restaurant overlooks the Westlake hills and is one of the best views from a restaurant in Austin that you can get. I've had no problems with the service nor a bad experience here. The food is reasonably priced and good, not great. I'd suggest getting the baby back ribs and their homemade bread. I come here for the bread. Take that away, and I would probably go to Rudys every time I crave BBQ, unless I'm with out of town guests. The food here is expensive for what you get. I never leave hungry. The view is outstanding. So, they give you free bread, and charge you for their good bread. A large loaf is $6, but worth it. Ask for it hot! They sell day old loafs cheap sometimes, too. I'm from Boston and don't claim to be an expert on BBQ. I like it here. The brisket is consistently tasty, and the chicken and turkey are comparable to other places. Out of town guests have loved the ribs! I also like the side dishes here, since they go beyond the usual choices. I can get french fries and similar sides. Last night they had mac & cheese as a daily side. Not that I need too much more food after all the bread. The two Austin locations have surprisingly different menus. This location has a wide selection of salads, which are not available at the 2222 location. It generally isn't as crowded at this location either. This review applies to all the County Lines (even in San Antonio on I-10). County Lines are fun to visit and have good atmosphere and usually have great views. This one has a nice view of 360 while the one on 2244 has a nice view of the river. These are good places to bring visitors b/c it's scenic and fun. However, if you are looking for good bbq, this place is only mediocre. You pay for venue, not food. So bring a date, show people a good time, but if you want better & cheaper, go to Rudy's or Salt Lick in driftwood. Wait, better yet, drive out to Lockhart. read more

Not the best BBQ, but far from the worst. Both Austin locations are not too bad, but don't expect the same in other cities such as San Antonio. The locations there are bad. The Austin locations bring back good memories for my wife, so we try to make it by here if we are in town. The view here is of nice rolling hills overlooking the Barton Creek Resort. You want to sit on the patio if the weather is nice or by the windows if it is not. I won't go into the food as it is typical BBQ fare. The only thing that is unique here is the homemade bread. So we had some English friends visiting, and they wanted to be beefed. "Bring us brisket" they said and so we did. We had planned to go to the Salt Lick, but realized it was too long a walk for too short a glass of water, and as it was approaching sunset, the County Line view was the destination. The view was great. The food was moderately priced and actually came on plates rather than paper, which is one way to justify the around $14 plate price. I had turkey and brisket. The turkey was tasty enough not to deserve drowning in the sauce. The generous half portion of fries tasted of some exotic oil, and the coleslaw was good. The brisket was nothing special, and I was quietly pleased that the portions weren't extreme - I had room for dessert. Our server was polite and chatty, and made the effort to understand the dulcet toned English maiden among us. He was prompt and efficient, and got everything spot on. For dessert I made the mistake of ordering the cheesecake, based solely on the description of "huge" and "has to be seen to be believed". It was weighty, firm and large. The drizzled sauces were attractive. It was filling. Probably not the nicest thing to say about a cheesecake, but it was like eating a milky brick. Satisfying. During the meal, a cow on the wall starting telling jokes. No. I didn't believe it either. The atmosphere was great, despite the screaming satan spawn child opposite, and the location merits a mention. Our visitors were swept away by sausage, and spoke very highly of it. There are many reasons to visit the County Line. BBQ is generally what brings folks in the front door, but those in the know...realize that there is so much more. If you want brisket, sausage or ribs...the Hill will satisfy your hunger. For a real treat...try the medallions. The marianated tenderloin is fantastic. Your knife is optional as the meat can literally be cut with a fork. All of the sides are tremendous, but I am partial to the potato salad and mashed potatoes. If there is better mac and cheese offered anywhere...I have not found it. Creamy would be the best way to describe the delicous cheesy concoction. If you happen to be eating on a Thursday, don't miss the blackeyed peas; they are exceptional! My wife ordered the salmon several years ago and now that is all that she orders when we go to the Hill. As I said, there is so much more than BBQ. I have been to several County Line restaurants and have found them all to be consistently good. The difficult choice is pork or beef ribs? Whatever your decision, save room for the homemade ice cream! If you are looking for a smoky room eating off wax paper, the County Line is not the place for you. Ugh...I just had the worst dinner. The brisket and beans I ate were completely tasteless and the mashed potatoes weren't much better. My son said he added ketchup to a BBQ pulled pork sandwich just to add some flavor. My husband didn't like the mac 'n cheese even though that's usually his favorite side dish. My daughter said her kid's meal of ribs and fries was "just OK." About the only redeeming component of the meal was the homemade bread. Such a shame that the food is so bad because the view is gorgeous and the atmosphere has a fun vibe so this would be a great place to take out-of-town guests except now I never will. read more

When we saw the massive line at Iron Works, we bypassed it and came straight to County Line. Although the hostess said it would be a "really short wait", it wasn't. It took at least 45 minutes to get a table. For such a large space, you would think they could squeeze us somewhere! All the waitresses were sweating profusely...probably from bustling so many different tables. Service was a little off. We didn't have silverware for a while. But all things aside, it was solidly good barbecue. I normally go to Rudy's to get my fix, but this was quite different. The 5-meat combo platter, piled high with turkey, sausage, two different types of brisket, and pork, hit the spot. That barbecue sauce made the juicy meats even better. Their french fries are really good too. The homemade bread was awesome, especially with the honey butter (I took a few packets home for safekeeping). I'm glad someone ordered the bread because it was amazing. Portions are not lacking here. You will leave with the insanely good feeling of clogged arteries and a full belly. So when I'm kind of hungry and want some creamed corn and extra-moist brisket, I'll go to Rudy's. But if I'm starving and craving that bread, I'll go to County Line. read more

I will say the ribs were fabulous, the meat was pink from the smoking. It was tender and delicious. Unfortunately, I only got one rib with my order. The brisket was very dry, even with a ton of BBQ sauce on it, still didn't make it good. Beans...well lets just say I've had better out of a can. The baked potato was good,but come on, it's a baked potato! If i did come back, i would only get ribs. I visited this restaurant with a bunch of colleagues just a couple weeks ago. This was my second trip to Texas, but my first real foray into Texas BBQ ('cue). We got the family sampler (included sausage, beef ribs, turkey breast, etc.) and we sampled the wings as well. The wings were good, perhaps a little spicy for some. The beef ribs were tender, but I didn't particular enjoy their sauce. I've had 'cue a good bit in the past, but their sauce just didn't do it for me. I will say I enjoyed their sausage (let it go), but you can also find this nearly identical at a number of places. The turkey breast was moist and flavorful, perhaps the surprise star on the plate. The desserts were what you'd expect, but if you get the all-the-meat-you-can-eat meal...you won't really have room anyway. More like a 2-1/2 star rating, I think, for a party of four on a Saturday night. There's equal parts good and mediocre. Let's start with the food. Beef ribs were really good; pulled pork about average, but the sausage was below par (only warm in both temperature and spiciness.) Sides were good, bread was decent, and salads only fair. Service was consistently quick and polite, and the meal was an excellent value. The interior of this place is charming, with lots of Texas memorabilia on the walls. The "how to talk like a Texan" soundtrack in the bathrooms is a hoot. The "talking longhorn" reminded me of Chuckie Cheese (that's a negative connotation to me, but you may like it.) Worst Brisket I've had in Austin...easily. I have eaten brisket from The County Line, Franklin BBQ, Rudy's, and The Salt Lick. This was by far the worst I've had. I have smoked briskets and I understand that it is the hardest cut of meat to be consistant with, since all cuts are slightly different and the long cook time and constant temperature needed can often produce a high variance in the finished product. With that being said, this brisket was truly horrible. A complete absence of smoky flavor, lack of moisture, and air-hockey puck like texture makes me fairly certain that this place is incapable of producing a decent smoked brisket. I actually looked around as I was eating it to see if the kitchen was playing a joke on me. I also looked to see if other people were enjoying their food. The results were inconclusive. There is no way they could correct ALL of the problems that their bland, tough, dry brisket possessed. I would go ANYWHERE before I would return. If Applebee's started smoking brisket, I would give that a try before I would return to this embarrassment of a restaurant. Oh yeah, I sampled the H-E-B pre-cooked brisket a few months ago in the store. That brisket was also WAY better than this hate jerky. Unless you are mad at yourself, lack taste buds, enjoy wasting money, or lost a bet do not order brisket from The County Line BBQ. read more

Interesting how I drive by here daily since it sits secluded next to my office that only recently have I become a regular. With a couple of options available in the work hood, it's becoming a solid choice for an after work whisky drinking place. There is something about the BBQ smokey atmosphere which makes Jameson go down better. I also like how one of the gal bartenders always calls us "Dear" and "Hun".. as in "Can I get you another Dear" "Hey Hun, how ya doing, can I get you a cold one?" The other day, we sat outside after a grueling Friday and took in a great view of the hill country. It was a perfect wind down to the week. I have had lunch a few times here, but unlike everyone in Austin it seems, I am not a BBQ Expert. I also have better things to do with my time than blowing 2 hrs waiting in line for brisket. This was my first time to eat here. The service was prompt and friendly. The menu had a good variety of selections. I got the two meat plate with sausage (their own recipe) and beef rib. My sides were potato salad and green beans. The sausage and ribs were done to perfection. The rib meat was tender with a good smokey flavor. The sausage was good flavor and not real spicy. The sauce was served in the side so you. An add as little or as much as you like. The potato salad and green beans were very good also. The high lite of the meal was the home made bread. It was served warm with plain and honey butter. I could have made a meal of this wonderful bread. If you are looking for great BBQ and home made bread I highly recommend The County Line. read more

The County Line was my first experience with Austin BBQ and I can say it is definitely a good example of what Austin is best known for. Since all of the items are extremely filling. I recommend to order your entree once you have eaten most of your appetizers if you chose to order them. I can personally recommend the Queso Fries with added pulled pork, with my entree being the brisket which was also superb. What I believe is best about this BBQ is not the food, but the amazing view of the Austin Hills when you sit outside. Don't worry about the heat because there are more than enough fans to keep you cool while you enjoy your meal. Hands down my favorite BBQ. Ever. Every time that my family visits Austin we make sure to stop at one of the County Line locations to get some Texas BBQ. Everyone enjoys the food and the service is definitely a-okay. Today I got the lean brisket with a side salad and the mac and cheese. Awesome. The people with me got some sort of combination platter and a hamburger (my brother doesn't really enjoy BBQ.. gasp!). All of the food was delicious and we also opted for their "special" homemade bread which was great too. We went on a Tuesday night and were quickly seated and had good service. A lot of their barbecue is worth 3 stars, but what I really enjoy here is the pork rib combo. Their pork ribs are great, tender, and have yet to let me down. Queen Dee Dee! I'm so grateful that she executed everything beyond I expected. Dee Dee doesn't just cater the food she does everything! The food for the wedding was actually better than the actual visit we have made at the restaurant. She set out all the linens, tables, chairs, ALL of my decorations that I made and bought, coffee bar, guest sign in table etc. She listened, took notes and executed the day of the wedding. I've been to County Line many times, usually when I have out of town guests visiting and I need a scenic sort of place to bring them. It has a kitschy Texas feel, with the longhorn head on the wall and the overall decor and gorgeous view. I just went again this past weekend and it was quite delish. I had the 2 meat lite combo with pork ribs and the moister marbled version of the brisket. They were both tender and yummy. The pork rib meat came clean off the bone. The sides were great, too. The cole slaw was very fresh and crunchy and the corn on the cob was superb. My husband had the sausage and he loved it. If you haven't been to County Line in awhile, check it out. I think it's gotten better. I used to go more for the ambiance than the food but now I think the food matches the ambiance. read more

Arguably one of the best BBQ places in Texas; the County Line did deliver. (The only reason I give it three stars is because I rarely eat meat and going was almost more a tourist trip than one for food). The atmosphere and decor of the place was fitting with everything you stereotypically expect from a BBQ place. The platters were relatively decent sized too (although I was nowhere near finishing; there was just less waste than what I expected). With not a lot to compare to, the meat was good but nothing that I would rave about.
