We had a dinner reservation and were seated right away. I'd recommend making one since the place was busy and didn't look like they could easily accommodate walk ins. Red Snapper Crudo ($21): It was alright but not worth it. I wasn't sure all the ingredients worked together. Bone Marrow With Mushroom Risotto ($42): A huge entree that's enough for two people. Came with two large bone marrow and a delicious but very heavy mushroom risotto. I'm used to mushroom risotto in a white creamy base but this one was red, buttery, and cheesy. It was incredible but I wouldn't recommend it if you're on a date or watching what you eat. I was very bloated and felt heavy afterwards so save it for your cheat meal days. It was too much to finish in one sitting anyway so I got to enjoy it again for lunch the next day. Wood Grilled Octopus ($19): My friend ordered this and I tried a piece. The octopus was a bit overcooked. 10 Oz Beef Filet With Fresh Blue Crab Fonduta ($72): My husband and friend both loved the blue crab fonduta which had a strong blue crab flavor. The beef filet was nicely cooked but lacked flavor and the slice was cut a bit too thick for my taste. What surprised me most was the service! Our server, Brandy was the best server I ever had. She was so kind and accommodating. I couldn't decide between 2 cocktails and I wanted something balanced and sweet. Brandy recommended the Rosa Maria. She assured me that if I didn't like it, that I could get a new drink. Unfortunately, I didn't love it - the aftertaste wasn't smooth but overall it was good. She quickly followed up with me and kept her word. I wanted the drink to be slightly sweeter and smooth and the staff remade it. This time, it was perfect! I appreciate that Brandy was so accommodating for our entire huge party. This was my first dining experience at Red Ash and it was for my friends birthday dinner. We had a party of seven and were seated at the high top in the front of the restaurant by the hostess counter. I had a great view of everybody walking by the restaurant outside :) Our server was fantastic! He was super friendly and attentive. We arrived at 8:00 p.m. and left a little after 10:00 p.m. The food was delicious. My man absolutely loved his seafood pasta dish! He doesn't even eat pasta but he scraped that plate dry. I highly recommend ordering family style for the table but make sure your whole party is on board with splitting the check evenly because the restaurant does not break up the check according to diners only split evenly, I believe up to four ways. Example: Our check was $822 (included gratuities) for seven people and we were only able to split evenly four ways. Roughly $118 each. It is what it is but I didn't even get a main course. This restaurant was everything I could of asked for. Probably the best restaurant we tried in all of Austin. I'm from Los Angeles, and have been to many high end and hip restaurants, this was definitely up there with some of the best restaurants. Food: Crab tagliatelle is a must! This dish was delicious and everything you can ask for from a pasta. Gnocchi special with Peas and Asperagus is a must. This creamy and feather light dish was packed with so much flavour. Lobster scalloping was very good as well and so was the filet mignon. But best of all were the side of carrots, pear and endive salad and the Cho salad. We've always heard so much hype about Red Ash and just had to try for ourselves. Takes a few months to get a reservation. I had made a reservation a few weeks prior for our anniversary month. When we sat at our table they had a cute little greeting card from the staff wishing us a happy anniversary. Pro Tip: Just make a reservation way in advance and if you make it you make it. Even if you don't think you will be able to make it. If you can't go just cancel with enough advance. We started with the Meatballs that pair wonderfully with their Italian Bread. Flavorful and plentiful dish and def get the bread! Next came the Bone Marrow & Tuna Crudo. I will say though for some reason after we finished our Meatballs it took them quite a while to bring our dishes after that. Bone Marrow was divine and also paired well with the Italian Bread. Tuna Crudo was not what I expected because it was warm and I was expecting it to be cold. But it was good and I love eggplant. Our main dish was the Agnolotti Alla Piemontese. From the description it seemed to hit all the boxes since we are meat lovers (contains braised beef & pork shoulder) and truffle. I love me some truffle. When we ordered the Agnolotti Alla Piemontese I asked him does it have a lot of truffle flavor because I love truffle. He said oh we can definitely add more truffle if you would like when the dish comes out. When the dish came they had the chef come shave an extra truffle on the dish. The steak trimmings bruschetta was a single slice of bread, but it was loaded with both perfect medium rare steak and delicious mushrooms. Add maybe a $4 order of two slices of their garlic bread, and you could perhaps call this an entree. The octopus was perfectly tender and came sitting in a delicious almost-stew that made the dish heartier. Again, kind of expensive for the single skewer (about 6 pieces) of octopus. We got one of the most expensive mains -- the cold lobster tails scampi style with spaghettini. There were five small lobster tails, which isn't bad. Flavor was just fine. The pasta on the side was just fine, just cooked beyond al dente in a simple tomato sauce. It was a little surprising the pasta didn't have lobster flavor or even scampi flavor. Felt like two very different dishes on the plate. This dish also came with a slice of bread. Their bread is great. We also got the special-- morel mushrooms over polenta and a poached egg. It tasted great but was probably the thinnest, smallest serving of polenta I've ever had. The desserts is where Red Ash then redeemed itself. The tiramisu is great...AND HUGE. Double the size I would have expected. And they don't say it on the menu, but you can order a single scoop of gelato for $4. Parking is always challenging downtown; we got super lucky with someone leaving street parking just as we got there. It's very noisy inside. We had a wonderful date night at Red Ash and finally understood why it's one of Austin's most talked‑about restaurants. We booked our 6:45pm reservation two months out, arrived a little early, and were seated at the bar right away--already a great start. Drinks: She ordered the Heat of Passion and I went with the Satan's Circus. Both were solid cocktails, but the Heat of Passion definitely stole the show with brighter, more pronounced flavors. Mine was good, though the chilis were much more subtle than expected. Starters: We started with the burrata with tomatoes and the bone marrow. The burrata itself was outstanding--creamy, fresh, and absolutely delicious. The tomatoes were good but could have used a touch more seasoning, though it seemed they were going for a "let the ingredients shine" approach. The bone marrow, however, was phenomenal. Rich, buttery, and paired perfectly with the extra bread it came with (which was helpful since we devoured the burrata's bread instantly). It was my first time trying marrow, and it was a "when in Rome" moment I'm glad I had. Entrées: We shared the potato gnocchi (small portion) and the blue crab pasta (full portion). The crab pasta was flavorful and well‑balanced, but the gnocchi packed such a punch that you really had to alternate bites or it would overshadow the other dish entirely. For what it's worth, we're not huge seafood people, so that may have influenced our impressions--but both dishes were delicious in their own way. Dessert: We debated between the olive oil cake and the chocolate cake, and finally chose the chocolate hazelnut volcano cake. Zero regrets. Rich, warm, and decadent--halfway through I was ready for a nap in the best possible way. Ambience: The building itself is thoughtful and stylish. There was music playing (sounded like Bad Bunny vibes), but it was hard to hear over the crowd--if anything, lowering it might make conversations easier. We managed to sneak in here on a Monday night and find bar seating at around 8:30 PM. I was later told it takes months to get a reservation, and after trying the food and feeling the vibes, I could see why. Intimate, but casual environment with friendly service. The lighting is spot on: not too dark, not too bright. We shared the meatballs and the osso bucco and a bottle of wine. The osso bucco was probably among the best I've had. The wine list is quite extensive and you can find some pretty good values. I like it here so much I tried to get back in the following night. This is rare for me. When you walk into a restaurant and there is a line when it opens, it is either cheap food or an experience. We were eating from out of town, from Los Angeles, and crossing our fingers! Thankfully, Red Ash was an experience! From being greeted by the hostess and accommodated by not going up the flight of stairs (bad knee), to the end with hot cream-filled doughnuts. We started with a great greeting by Jacob, our server, who was also the sommelier. So I took his recommendation for the EPC Brut Premier Cru, because I wanted bubbles and it was heavenly. My daughter's Shirley Temple was perfect with her favorite cherries! To start, we had the Hot and Crispy Country Italian Bread and the San Daniele Prosciutto and Burrata. I would be happy to eat this combination for the rest of my life! My daughter ordered the 1/2 portions of Capelletti "Bishop's Hats" and Handmade Potato Gnocchi "Gratinata" after conferring with Jacob due to her odd food allergy. The gnocchi were like eating clouds of sunshine. I had the 1/2 portion of Mezze Rigatoni Alla Campagnola, which was filled with incredible flavors with every bite. For dessert, we had the Hot Cream Filled Doughnuts even though we were full, but they were perfection with the Blackberry Marmalatta. The experience was complete and was sublime. We actually called over Peter, who was the General Manager, and complimented him on the food (homemade pasta!), staff (specifically the hostesses and Jacob), service (top-notch), and overall ambiance (industrial chic). Since we were dining on the 2nd floor we had a good view of it. We became fascinated concerning where the bird would go next. We took a few pictures of it; tried to get a video of it in flight. I think we missed out on that. We did notice the bird kept turning around. It did in fact poop on the table below where a couple was having drinks. I am glad I did not give up on Red Ash after a bad experience. I have been several times after and it exceed my expectation more and more, and somehow I became addicted to Frutti Di Mare. I can officially say this is my fav italian restaurant in Austin. It is hard to get a reservation, but dont give up even if you eat in the bar. It is well worthed. For the first timers, Order Tomato and Burrata, Frutti Di Mare and Tiramusu. You wont regret, but be careful with sea food pasta. Fantastic first visit to this place that we've been excited to try. Reservations were a bit challenging so now we know to book far in advance, plan ahead! Paid parking is directly across the street, minimum for 2 hours was $27 and can always be extended however the restaurant allows 1 hr 45 minutes to dine. Valet is available. We chose to sit near the cooks which was very entertaining. It's amazing to watch how focused each chef was, attention to detail and composure! It made us want everything on the menu. Our waitstaff was Stephen who was cordial and helpful. Since this was our first, and definitely not our last, we started with the burrata appetizer which was a hardy portion with leftovers. Friends recommended the osso bucco so we got that and husband got the rigatoni with sausage. Both were delicious while the osso bucco was full of flavor and tender, the rigatoni was also a hit! Joel recommended the Feudi di San Gregorio Falanghina and it was so refreshing, so smooth and went amazing with the Small Butter Clams "Oreganata Style". I also had the Mezze rigatoni and subbed out the sausage for broccolini since the sausage was made with pork and they didn't have any other protein options for the pasta other than half a chicken. Over all the service is phenomenal, it's a lowlight restaurant perfect for date night or corporate event where you want to impress someone. The bone marrow is a favorite here but I will say it's a split on which option I love better between that and the clams. I've had the thin sliced beef Carpaccio and tbh it just felt like and over priced bun less sand which. I would not order that again. Joel thoroughly impressed me with his recommendations. The space can get crowded and loud, and you will have to wait a bit past your reservation time to get your table. We sat at the bar and it was okay. Service is friendly, but slow. As a New Yorker new to Austin, this is honestly my favorite restaurant in the city. I've been visiting over the past year, but I've noticed the heavy set Latina female check in host isn't very friendly and often pushes back when we try to walk in with or without reservations. It's also hard to get a reservation; she says they're often released only on the day itself. For example, I booked a 5pm reservation just three minutes before, which was stressful. I love the food here, but getting seated has always been an issue it's difficult to get a bar seat or table without hassle. It's unfortunate because I don't have these issues at their sister restaurant, J Carver, which is much more accommodating. THE BLACK AND WHITE: The wife and I came here for a rare date night. I didn't confirm the times and the reservation was never set, but fortunately we walked in and was able to grab a table for an hour before the next guest came in. A rarity. Highly recommend to make a reservation ahead of time. For food, we got the wood grilled bone marrow, agnolotti, bolognese, pollo alla diavolo, and for dessert the apple crostata to go. All the dishes were so rich in flavor (likely from all the oils/butter/mallow used). My favorite was the bolognese. It had the nice tomato sauce acidity to balance the fattiness of the dishes. My wife got a basil and mint mocktail that was bomb. It tasted really good and paired nicely with the food. I opted out of a drink because I wanted to try more of the food. The pasta in the Frutti Di Mare and Tagliolini with Fresh Blue Crab were all overcooked and kind of soggy. It almost feels like they were using the fancy seafood to hide the subpar pasta. The pasta in the spaghetti was al dente but I wasn't wowed by the sauce, it was under salted and too acidic. The portion sizes on the pasta entrees were very generous which made the price a but more acceptable. The blue crab pasta is a must-try! Super rich with flavor, and the crab has a nice sweetness that goes well with the creamy sauce. The Milanese was good, but nothing in comparison to the crab pasta. Service: our server was super attentive - brought extra bread for our bone marrow and gave some great recommendations. They were also quick with clearing table space when we were done with our appetizer and changing out the plates and utensils. Vibe: gorgeous bar area with seating, lots of tables near the kitchen and dining area. There is an upstairs seating area but did not get a god look at what it's like. Not worth your time and money! Booking out months in advance for this is outrageous. The only thing worth your money was the crab pasta. The rigatoni was dry and honestly you could make it at home. The agnolotti was flavorless and inedible. The steak trimmings bruschetta was just okay as the bread was extremely soggy. I would give this a miss if you want good Italian. Maybe the steak is the star of the show but if you want good Italian in Austin go to Sammie's. read more

Mea Culpa. I cannot believe that 4 years ago I only gave Red Ash 4-stars. It was one of the best dining experiences of my life. The factor that elevated even further was our server, Brandy. She is absolutely phenomenal. She is very funny, friendly & personable, and knowledgeable. She was like our tour guide for the evening. In addition to the service, the food was just amazing. Rather than go with steaks and entrees, we thought the better way to approach is from a tapas/small plates perspective so we can try many different dishes. We went with: Garlic Bread - possibly the best in the world (++) Meatballs - also some of the best I've ever had (++) Octopus - tender and well flavored (+) Tuna Crudo - just remarkable (++) Tagliatelle - it was like the ultimate comfort food without being heavy. (++) Gnocchi - Brandy raved about it so we had to get it (++) We also had an artichoke that was off the menu, which I probably wouldn't get again as it's too difficult for me to figure out how to eat. Dessert - the legendary donuts with a scoop of gelato. Before you ask, yes, of course we took some of this food to go! Every single dish was a standout, and the flavors were next-level. - Tagliolini with Fresh Blue Crab: light, perfectly seasoned, and packed with sweet, delicate crab - Frutti Di Mare: a seafood lover's dream; super fresh, perfectly cooked, and full of flavor - Tagliatelle Alla Bolognese: rich, comforting, and exactly what a true Bolognese should be - Hot & Crispy Country Italian Bread: honestly, dangerous. Reservations are tough to get, so plan a couple months ahead, but the experience was worth it. The atmosphere is nice, dim lighting, and the open kitchen right in the middle of the restaurant makes it feel personal. They also have this huge glass wine room with a giant ladder that looked really impressive. The service was excellent. Our server was very attentive throughout the meal, took time to explain how different dishes were prepared, gave helpful recommendations, and paced everything out really well for the table. The portions here are massive compared to a lot of upscale spots, so it actually felt like a solid value for the quality and amount of food. We shared a few pastas, steak, sides, cocktails, and desserts and left completely stuffed. The Hot & Crispy Country Italian Bread was nice and garlicky. The Coal Roasted Sweet Potatoes were buttery and rich with mascarpone, the Wood Grilled Broccolini had a nice little kick to it. The steak, a 20 oz center cut ribeye was incredibly tender, flavorful, and came pre sliced which made it easy to share. My favorite dish of the night was easily the Tagliolini with Fresh Blue Crab. Rich, buttery, and packed with flavor. We also had the Spaghettini alle Vongole with clams, which was lighter but still really good. For drinks, I had the Heat of Passion cocktail with mezcal and loved it, and we also tried one of their seasonal strawberry cocktails that was refreshing and balanced with herbs. Dessert was a strong finish. The Hot Apple Crostata with salted caramel gelato was incredible. It had a buttery crust, not overly sweet, that went perfect with the gelato.
