This is actually my first time leaving a negative Yelp review, but unfortunately our experience left a lot to be desired. From the moment we sat down, the restaurant seemed poorly run and understaffed. It took around 10 minutes just to get water, and the service never really improved from there. The oysters were the biggest issue. They had a foul smell and were clearly not fresh, so we sent them back. Later, while we were discussing the oysters amongst ourselves, a waiter overheard us and visibly rolled his eyes. It was incredibly unprofessional, especially considering the concern was completely valid. There was also a lot of confusion surrounding a gluten-free meal. We explained multiple times that this was due to celiac disease and not simply a preference. Despite that, numerous different employees kept bringing food to the table, and no one seemed to know whether the dish was actually gluten-free. There are so many wonderful places to stop and grab a meal in downtown Amelia Island that I can't really recommend spending an evening here. Maybe our recent experience was an anomaly, but we were waiting at the host stand for more than ten minutes before we were greeted. Once someone did come over, a line had formed out the door, and we definitely had the feeling that the business wasn't thrilled to be busy. That did change once we were seated, and our waitress was extremely friendly and attentive. The crab was - as advertised - fantastic, though they were running low on both crackers and crab forks, so for a few minutes we just stared at our crab legs without the means to get to work. The drinks were very good, and with the exception of overcooked swordfish and risotto, the rest of the meal was terrific. There was a live pianist playing everything from Muppets to Frank Sinatra, so it was all in all a lovely place to pass some time once we got past the initial hiccups! read more

Went in around 7:30 and got seated at the bar right away. The atmosphere was sophisticated and comfortable. There is a beautiful piano in the dining room but there was no live music the night we were there. However, I've read in other reviews that the live pianist is superb. Our bartender, Caitlyn, was attentive and friendly. She gave us suggestions for local shops, foods, and things to do. We ordered a crab dinner and filet mignon and it did not disappoint! Just took a drive to Amelia Island with my wife to enjoy a little day date for lunch and light shopping. We stopped into The Crab Trap. Pleasant server and environment. However, we ordered steamed shrimp as an appetizer the shrimp was hard and rubbery I couldn't eat it my wife ate it anyways but it was tough and hard. We ordered the jerk swordfish with pineapple rice and mango salsa I was holding out hope for the main entree. The swordfish came out we were splitting the dish between the two of us. They brought us a second plate to split our own dish and the plate was covered in dried food which we had to wipe off our selves. As I cut into the sword fish it was tough,chewy, and hard. I will give credit to the pineapple rice it was the star of the show honestly it was very tasty the sauce was nice but the seafood was overcooked and it was such a disappointment to spend 80$ and not have a single item that left me wanting to return. My wife ordered an old fashioned it was made with jack Daniel's a spritz of soda water two cherries dropped in with an orange on wthe side of the glass and five watered down ice cubes. We were disappointed to say the least. The service was great we tipped above twenty percent because it's not the servers fault for the way the food was cooked but for a day date out it was a 1 star experience. I wrote this review in hopes that the restaurant can reevaluate the chef who is preparing the food so that others can enjoy their experience here. Considering this is a travel hotspot people expect to experience delicious seafood and fun vacation memories. Unfortunately our experience was a disappointment. I grew up in Fernandina and graduated from FBHS. I still own a condo downtown, so when friends came to town and wanted to eat somewhere that's a Fernandina staple, I suggested the Crab Trap. We went tonight and sat upstairs. Three of us ordered the all-you-can-eat shrimp. The evening started off a little rough. We ordered an Old Fashioned but were served what tasted like fruit-infused versions instead of a traditional Old Fashioned. They did remake them, and the second round was much better. Then someone in our group wanted collard greens. We were told they had them, but they couldn't be ordered as a side. That seemed like an easy opportunity to accommodate the customer and simply charge for a different side or adjust the price. The biggest issue, though, was the all-you-can-eat shrimp. When our first baskets were dropped off, our server said she'd go ahead and put in our refill order. We didn't receive that refill for an hour and a half. The table next to us was dealing with the exact same issue. They became so frustrated waiting on their shrimp refill that they eventually got up and left. I do want to say the food itself was good. This isn't a complaint about the quality of the meal--it's about the service and the overall experience. I'm really hoping this was just a one-off and not the new normal. Brett's is gone. The marina has changed dramatically. I'd hate to see another Fernandina institution lose what made it special. The Crab Trap has been a staple for a long time, and I truly expect better because I want to keep recommending it. read more

Was very excited when we walked in as the ambience was what we were looking for. That said, we were unfortunately disappointed on many facets of the visit. The main courses were all overcooked including fried oysters that you had to use a fork and knife to cut. My prime rib dip (French dip style with a jus) , although a healthy portion, was like leather, and and on such a huge roll that you could not dip into tiny plastic cup therefore you had to pour it on the sandwich. Lastly the sweet potato fries were so undercooked that it was flimsy like pasta. We could tell that the server had to know how poor the quality was as she never came back to the table to ask how things were....a different server brought the check. I never really like to post this sort of stuff but I hope that they review things for proper training for future improvements. read more

Really good first impression. Stopped by for lunch on a weekday. It was not crowded. Greeted warmly by James who was the only server that day. He managed 4 occupied tables well. Apparently this place was renovated about a year ago. Really nice dining area and bar. There is also an upstairs dining room and bar which James encouraged us to check out. We wanted to love Crap Trap, but It took 2 hours for our food to arrive, the food was not warm, fish tacos and fish sandwich, very dry. The burger was mediocre, and chowder was salty and underwhelming. The all you can eat crab legs we're good, but we had to wait over half and hour for the second tray, and by that time it was after 9:00, and we arrived at the restaurant at 6:00pm! It is a beautiful restaurant, the waitstaff were trying their best, and I wish our experience had been better. read more

I have no problem paying $45 for a pound of crab legs. I do have a problem that they only had plastic cutlery. I had some crab legs on my plate that had no crab inside. The bartender upstairs ignored us (because she was too busy). The food was good. In terms of service, I'd recommend the Sand Bar or The Patio any day over this place. I complained to the manager RE: plastic cutlery, and instead of offering a beverage or app, just apologized that a large party had just left the establishment downstairs. I won't be back nor would I recommend this place. Poor management. read more

All I wanted to do for my birthday was eat some crab. Boy did this place deliver! I ate about 4lbs of delicious snow crab. My brother got the seafood boil that was also incredible. Besides all of that what really made this place special was AMBER!!! She was the most kind lady, giving us recommendations of places to go (we are out of state), gave not only me, but my parents a free bday shot and overall made our experience so amazing. We were talking afterwords about how even if the food wasn't good, Amber still would've made the experience great. We have been going to the crab trap regularly for a year. First, the service. They have an awesome core group of wait staff/bar tenders that are great. They are always friendly and take great care of you. Second, the food. We have tried many things on their menu and have never been disappointed. Everything has been great. I've read several of the reviews and while never have work d in a restaurant, I know that it is very hard to staff perfectly for every time. What I have seen is that the staff deals with the busy times extremely well! They are super hard working and stay calm and friendly during these stressful times and make sure you're attended to. This evening was one with busy spikes and Brittany worked the bar and several tables including a huge party. She is amazing and still took care of us even with waiting on so many people. We were told that we should have mentioned happy hour when we ordered our drinks and food. Huh? After going back and forth with the waiter and the manager, we got cash back. But if you look at these receipts, it's not adding up right. My mule is $0 on the first bill, which is incorrect. They then added $8.00 for my drink and gave us the Angry Orchard as a courtesy. The quality of the seafood here is amazing. The oysters were gigantic, not super salty, and fresh. The mussels were very large, and they sent many out. However, the appetizer coconut curry for the mussels was lacking in flavor and a much thinner consistency than expected. The crab cake sandwich was tasty and packed with crab, but it was rather dry - I expected a bit more sauce and a crispier sweet potato fry. The flounder picatta didn't have the sauce I was expecting. I'm not sure the tomato risotto paired well with the fish. The fish was definitely amazing quality and large, but the risotto seemed like it didn't work with the fish. I felt as though the quality of the seafood was wasted on the flavors they chose to pair with them. Perhaps next time we will try the tower or the crab. They have a different special every night. On Friday, the oysters were $1! The alcohol drinks were pretty good. We had the cruzed and confused. It was not too sweet, very tasty and had the right ratios of alcohol to mixers. Don't fall for the trap! Arrived at 6:45pm on Sat. and were told the wait was around 45 mins. We headed upstairs to the lounge to wait and order apps. 45 mins passed and we checked the status of seating. There was a server acting as the host and could not tell us a status, so we decided to order dinner in the lounge because we were soooo ready to eat. Placed order around 7:30pm, and left the restaurant around 8:50pm hungry, with no dinner. They are extremely unorganized and seemed bothered by all the customers. Dined here the other night as the hurricane was making its way ashore. This happens to be one of the only places in the area that was open. Going off server recommends, I had the shrimp and grits. An interesting take on the dish as they were grit "cakes" and not just a bowl of grits with things added. These cakes were made with Gouda then deep fried so that there was a nice "crust" on them yum! My companions dishes were also good as well. This was the second time we have been here. The first time was 2 years ago after they reopened for a private party for my father in-law. Which was an excellent experience. Today we came in for lunch and took a few minutes to be seated. Our server brought us water right away and came to take our drink orders. My sister and I wanted to know what their frozen drink options were because it was the middle of the day in July. We were told they have none available. My sister got the watermelon margarita with a salt rim. She said the drink was too salty and couldn't drink it all. My brother got the fishbowl drink and it was good but expected for that type of drink.l. For appetizers we got a dozen oysters and the calamari. Both were excellent and we ate them all up! We did have to ask for the crackers, horse radish and cocktail sauce. Our 1 year old loved the calamari. For entrees I ordered the shrimp basket (came with fries, cole slaw, and hush puppies). My husband ordered a half pound of the peel n eat shrimp, sister orderer the burger (came with fries and cole slaw), and brother ordered the Fish n Chips and upgraded to the grouper). Our appetizers came out in a timely manner. Our entree order seemed to be more delayed. The food runner came out with food that wasn't ours and seemed confused and brought it back to the kitchen. When our food did come out my basket was missing the hush puppies but were brought out when brought up to the server. The shrimp I had in my basket was a bit tough and seemed like it had been sitting a while. My husbands peel and eat shrimp was very hard to peel. My brother and sister both seemed to like their food. The fries were good. The shining star was the tarter sauce that made it all extra yummy. I am happy I asked for the hush puppies because they were excellent. During our meal our son spilled his water cup and the server came with paper towels right away without us asking for them. Which was much appreciated. This is a tough one. The Crab Trap is relatively new to Fernandina and is a very nice restaurant. The interior is very welcoming and is a great fit for the area. We walked in on Saturday evening and while busy, there was no wait. There was also no host/hostess to be found in the 10 minutes we waited by the station. We finally just seated ourselves at the bar, which wasn't that busy. The bartender was friendly, but very slow and drinks were inconsistent at best. My wife's Bloody Mary was bland boring. It was just mixer and alcohol, with nothing else...no celery, no olive, no citrus...nothing. Later, he made one for a guest that looked completely different and was fully dressed. When I told the bartender it just wasn't very good and I would like it taken off the bill, he blamed the poor taste on the mixer. Dinner was actually pretty good. Fish n chips were hot, crisp and tasty with a really good tartar sauce. Same for the fried shrimp. It was really good. Service was the big fail tonight. With it being our first time there, we waiting at the hostess stand for a few moments, looked around and with no comment or we'll be right with you, we headed upstairs to the "lounge". A waitress asked if she could help us, we advised we were looking to be seating and she advised we needed to go back downstairs to the host stand. We headed back downstairs only to stand around and then sit due to the extended period of time with NOT A SINGLE EMPLOYEE even glancing our way. The bartender didn't utter a word, a waitress running past us to refill a beer at the bar didn't utter a word, and a waiter who I assume was handling the tables downstairs definitely didn't deem it necessary to comment our way. Needless to say after about 10 minutes of being ignored, we left and had a fantastic dinner at Salty Pelican, where we've been several times--but wanted to try something new! read more

First time experience was disastrous. But the pianist was great. Other than that.... We arrived just two of us - and sat at a small table near the piano. Server came and we asked her about a certain wine that is on the menu. She commented she had never heard of that wine which we politely pointed to the menu. So she went to the bar to inquire and a few minutes later came with a glass of this wine. My husband tasted and decided to order also which we communicated. We never saw her again. 30+plus minutes go by and we finally put the cash on the table for the glass of wine, tipped the pianist and left. During this time, she took care of the table right by us and never said a word to us. It was the most bizarre experience we have ever had. We went to The Boat House - a great place and enjoyed the evening. I had wanted to go to the Crab Track and wondered why some local residents had told me it was "just okay!" Now I know why. That changed today as Crab Trap In Fernandina Beach taking over as the best in the world! Their shrimp cocktail nailed it as my wife who won't eat any seafood actually ate the whole appetizer of 8 shrimp! To top it off the orange cake was amazing! Max was awesome as a bartender!
