I have gone here twice and I don't really have any complaints, the servers are nice, bartender made great drinks, and I have to say the environment has a chill tone to it. After working at the hospital and have a long day I can sit back and enjoy myself here. They also have a great selection of food for people like me who don't consume meat. I walked in..the woman behind the bar said hi. I said hi back and went and sat down. She helped the couple sitting 2 seats down from me with their food, asked if they wanted anything else, and then went to the other end of the bar to chat with her friend. For at least 5mins. It wasn't until the 2nd bartender walked out of the kitchen and asked if I was being helped that I finally got my drink. To be clear there were less than 20 people in the whole place at the time and I was the only new customer without a drink. I was a bartender with food service for over a decade, this is by no means considered busy. I thought, maybe the 2 bartenders have the bar split or something so she was sticking to her end of the bar. Then a woman walked in and sat next to me and didn't even have her self situated yet and the woman bartender was asking what she wanted, getting her a drink menu, etc. I was only here for one drink and saw other interactions with her (including with who seemed to be the owner/manager) and she seems very happy to be here for some people, and miserable in every other scenario. Dropped in for lunch on a Friday. We reserved a table for a large group, the table was set and ready when we got there. Has a nicer interior than I expected- sort of an old school feel. We ordered an assortment of different main dishes. I opted for the burger. It wasn't bad, but similar to a burger you can get at most bars. My friend ordered a chicken parm that was undercooked and another friend didnt receive their meal until right before we left which was unfortunate. My family and I have been loyal customers to the crooked knife for 4 years and we were honestly so disheartened to see all of their locations closing, but now I understand why. We were lucky enough to have the same server each time we came (Tara) and she always gave us incredible service and a warm welcome. However, today we walked in and were not greeted with a hello or anything, and the only man working gave menus to people who walked in after us. The first words he said to us were "I'm gonna need to see some ID's" VERY aggressively as if this brunch place was a bar. We hadn't even ordered drinks yet. Horrible service from the man who seemed to be the owner and honestly looking back, the food was never that good. The chicken was always TOO dry and I loved the place too much to admit that, but NOT ANYMORE. The Crooked Knife, count your days. Your only location left is doomed due to your horrible service, disrespectful attitude to customers, and dry dry dry chicken. PS I tried giving you constructive criticism over the phone and sparing you this scathing review, but you didn't even bother to pick up the phone. We hit this place up on a Thursday evening, light crowd. Loud music, typical for a bar... but hard to talk or hear in there. We were ordering dinner and beer after our long flight into the city. There fish & chips sounded like a winner, and I was not disappointed. Killer crispy skins on fries. Perfect! Fish super crispy outside, flaky and moist on this inside... done just right. Couldn't finish it all, it's a hearty plate of food. My husband's burger also looked quite substantial and since there was nothing left I'd presume it was just as delicious. Close to my cousin's so that also made it a no brainer for us to walker over too. Definitely if you're in the vicinity it's worth a spot in and check. Nice/friendly server too. read more

Let me start by saying the flavor of the food was really good. That's not the issue. The quality of the food is what's of importance here. The crispy chicken sandwich has a great taste but only because of all of the bells and whistles that came with it. The sandwich itself has a great taste but the chicken breast used is not seasoned AT ALL! The breast is also very thin so you know they're slicing it in portions in the kitchen. It's fairly large "in width" so you can take a bite of the chicken breast that leaks outside of the bun. I took a bite and immediately knew there was no seasoning at all used in the chicken itself. The chicken is perfectly fried so I was looking forward to tasting how the chicken was made. Not thrilled at all! The French toast is $18 so I assumed the bread used would be challah for that price. Joke was on me. It's two slices of plain white bread for $18. Again, tasted fine but for that price I don't think so. Ordered a side order of hash browns for $9. I expected hash browns made from scratch with potatoes peppers and onions. Not at all! We received an order of two hash brown patties clearly purchased from a store. There's no effort into preparing this for customers. A pack of hash brown patties costs half of what The Crooked Knife is charging for two patties. Again! Not made from scratch! $9 for two hash browns is an absolute joke. The server on duty "John" never came over to our table asking how our meal was or if we needed anything. He spent a lot time at other tables talking with customers but never came to ours with the same energy. In fairness, he was never disrespectful but the effort wasn't given to us as it was for other customers. The entire vibe was completely off and this was in comparison to the first time we'd been there which was very inviting. I don't remember the young lady who was there at that point but she was the reason we decided to go back. This will be our last time here to say the least. read more

Really kind staff - fun, social, and extremely accommodating. Excellent bar and beer selection. Breakfast was good. I thought that the bacon was a bit thin/dry (would have loved to see them thick and juicier) and that the toast was just one slice of toast. Would have been great to have 2 slices, some butter (didn't include butter), and an option of white or wheat. Sausages were a bit spicy and crunchy, and the eggs were cooked well. Their cocktails are delicious, so definitely worth coming here for the bar/drinks/beer selection. With slight tweaks to the breakfast, this would be an excellent brunch spot. Incredibly excited to be one of the first reviews for this soon-to-be Kips Bay Gem!! Food: 5 Drinks: 3.5 Service: 5 Ambience: 4 Value: 5 We live in the area and saw that a new Crooked Knife had replaced the existing neighborhood pub, so decided to check it out on a Sunday night. I came in with average expectations, but was excited by the (great) prices of around $15 an entree. For Sunday night at an off-peak time, the food was very good and well worth the visit. My burger (medium) was cooked perfectly with a pink thread in the middle, the cheese was freshly melted, and the fries were crispy and seasoned well. The fish and chips my friends got were quite good if a bit under salted, and the Mac and cheese was solid for its value. Notably, my friend's medium-well burger was slightly but certainly more browned than mine, and I appreciate that attention to detail on a Sunday night when we were starving and would've been happy with anything. Drinks were solid; I ordered a cocktail that could've had either a bit more sweetness or kick, but was still enjoyable. Service was excellent, and Justin entertained us with his humor for our entire visit. The new decor looks beautiful and upleveled compared to the prior restaurant just a few months ago, and it has a chill, friendly neighborhood feeling. And finally, I have to assert how great value this was -- I love a great burger and fries, and while I've had fancy ones before (thank you, Au Cheval), this was probably the best-value burger I've had in NYC. Even better, bacon comes included! While this new place deserves all the love, hopefully it doesn't get too popular just yet...otherwise I have to make a reservation rather than just strolling downstairs to go! We grabbed a quick drink here before a movie at the AMC Theater next door. I was immediately (and happily) taken aback by the fact that a cocktail is only $11, but there was a premium charge for Maker's in the old fashioned so it ended up being closer to $16 (the bartender asked if I wanted it with Maker's, not mentioning the surcharge). I wonder what kind of bourbon they would have used in the base cocktail since Maker's isn't exactly top shelf. Dropped by on a Sunday afternoon for an early dinner w a friend. Chose outside seating because the weather was really nice. We each had the house burger and a beer. Everything was great- bacon was crispy delicious, had ordered my burger medium rare (I know, why would anyone do that at a bar but they never come out actually medium rare). My burger came out medium-ish, no pink at all... I was pretty content with the meal, beer, and service --except after leaving the restaurant and on our walk down to the lower east side I was hit by sudden excruciating stomach pain and the urge to use the bathroom. I almost couldn't hold it in- ran into a bar to use their bathroom... then had to go again within two blocks of that bar and used the bathroom at another bar. There could be no other explanation for the sudden onset of explosive diarrhea and excruciating stomach pain other than the food I had at Crooked Knife, since I hadn't eaten anything else that day (thus the early dinner) and was fine before hand. The meat appeared to be cooked through so I don't think it was the burger patty? My friend had the same order but had gotten his burger medium and thankfully, he didn't get sick at all. Maybe it was the lettuce/tomato. I imagine it couldn't have been the fries or the beer? Uncomfortable stomach issues aside, I am not opposed to giving the place another chance. The rating really would have been closer to somewhere between a 4 and 5 star, except the discomfort of explosive diarrhea and near not making it to the bathroom in time while outside was quite unnerving, and while outdoor seating was great, it took a bit of adjusting to the smell of trash and whatever rotting/molding green stuff was a few feet away from their outdoor seating area. read more
