The location does a lot of the work, sitting right below NYU on Thompson Street in the middle of insane foot traffic, which makes it an easy, obvious pick whenever a group needs somewhere to land. That location is exactly why my crew kept coming back specifically. The Malt House runs private event and group packages built around per-person minimums, and with a captive NYU crowd a few blocks away, hitting those minimums was never really in question for us. We knew people would show up, the staff knew we'd bring a crowd, and over time that turned into a real relationship. The entire team got to know us, and we started getting genuinely good discounts and promos out of it, the kind of thing that only happens once a bar actually recognizes your face. Even after whatever arrangement or connection originally brought us there ended, I kept coming back on my own, mostly for old times' sake at that point. The place backs up the relationship with a legitimately deep beer list, dozens of rotating drafts plus a long bottle and can selection, along with whiskey flights if you want to go a different direction. The food menu holds its own too, built around solid American tavern fare, wings, sliders, a well-regarded burger, plus a weekend bottomless brunch that draws its own crowd separate from the nightlife scene. I usually posted up outside when the weather allowed it and moved inside when it didn't, and either way the vibe stayed consistent: exposed brick, long wood bar, the kind of worn-in comfort that doesn't try too hard. If you're just looking to hang out with friends without a big production, it's a genuinely decent spot with good food, good drinks, and pricing that's fair for the neighborhood. Opened back in 2012 and still going strong more than a decade later, which says something in a city this unforgiving to bars. Not the flashiest spot in the Village, but it's earned its spot as a reliable go-to, and clearly not just for me.

We went for lunch during Restaurant Week and we checked the menu online before visiting. It clearly stated lunch was $30 prix fixe. When we arrived, the same menu and price were posted at the door. Upon sitting down, we were presented with the $45 dinner menu (which is only supposed to be offered after 4:00). We asked not once but twice for the lunch menu and we were told by the waiter that the dinner menu was the only one. I asked if the price would be $30 or $45 and we were told $30. So we ordered, had a good meal (the appetizers were excellent, my chicken main course was dry) and we received the check and (behold) they charged us $45 each. My concern, and what I want to make everyone aware of, is that while we were dining, two other parties came in and we could hear them asking the same question about the menu. I wonder if they had the same issue upon receiving their checks. Why is this restaurant giving patrons a more expensive dinner menu during lunch hours? You can come to your own conclusion.
