Friendly staff that were quick to greet and offer assistance. I will admit to not liking fish, but being a fan of the Chef, knowing that I wanted to try her food, I was happy with the shrimp burger. I stopped in for lunch. It's a small place with no traditional tables inside, just counter seating and seats along the wall. We were given menus, then told to order at the register. We ended up sitting outside, and when the food was ready, the person who took our order brought it out to us. I had the fish sandwich with fries, and my friend had the fish with potato salad and boiled peanuts. I really liked my fish sandwich. It was served simply on white bread with tartar sauce, and it was messy in the best way. I managed the first few bites as a sandwich, but eventually had to finish it with a fork and knife. The fries were also very good. The potato salad was not really for me. I wanted to like it, but every time I took a bite, I kept thinking there was something about it I didn't like. I think it may have had too much pickle juice. On the other hand, I had never tried boiled peanuts before, so I had nothing to compare them to, but I really enjoyed them. I had the basic sandwich which had crispy catfish, tartar sauce on good squishy white bread. One nice touch was the bread being griddled with that side facing in on the fish. Led to a nice little crunch. It got fairly messy so finished it up knife and fork style. The shrimp burger had a flavor neither of us were a fan of and it kind of overwhelmed the shrimp. We also split the salad which was two big hunks of iceberg with a nice amount of, funky in a good way, dressing with hints of anchovy and dill. This place is one of the best fish restaurants I've eaten in in a long time. It's on the south slope and has a cool vibe. The catfish that is cornmeal battered is absolutely delicious. The flounder fish bites were out of this world. A lot like a English fish and chip. The collard greens were some of the best greens I've had in Asheville. The fries were fabulous and were a thick cut curly tight fry. I'll definitely be going back to this place. The staff are very friendly and we got our meal and just a few minutes. My husband could not stop groaning (in a good way) as he ate his trout balogna sandwich. He claims this is the best fish sandwich he's ever had, and he eats a lot of fish sandwiches as a pescatarian. I am not a big fish fan but I had the Ranchovy salad that was amazing with house made dressing and lots of crunchies. The hush puppies were tender, not as dense as most...so good! Try the pork rinds with a hint of vinegar, yum. It's a small place with limited seating. I got the fishticks with fries and it more than filled me up. The thick cuts of fish were nicely breaded and seasoned. The fries were hot, crispy, and seasoned well, maybe had some Old Bay on them. The tartar, cap n crik, and hot sauces were all really good and perfect accompaniment to the fish. My friends had the sides with their fish plates, Mac and cheese and greens. Highly recommend both of these as well. The greens had a little bit of sweet to them but not overly sweet. The Mac and cheese had the right amount of cheese and was baked perfectly. Stopped in here a few weeks ago after dropping my son off at WCU and let me be clear the food and vibe was amazing! I saw Chef Ashleigh on tournament of champions and Bobby Flay triple threat so I had to check out her restaurant. The vibe is really dope with 90s jet magazine decor which was a pleasant surprise because I love the 90s! I had the fish sandwich and the loaded fries very delicious! Chef was in there working and I had a chance to meet her. Hands down she is one of the nicest, friendliest and sweetest celebrities I've ever met and I've met a few. It's good. It's hot. And it's fish. I can't really say that it's great, though. The trout bologna is an interesting concept and it was well prepared. My mind was just having trouble comprehending what my eyes were seeing. A bit of dining cognitive dissonance, it seems. The website menu said that the trout was steelhead while the on-site menu stated rainbow. It was steelhead which I wished I'd known before ordering as I don't really like steelhead trout. The side of red peas was the real star and a dish that highlights Ashleigh Shanti's strengths. If I do return it will be because of those peas. Service is friendly and fast but there are a few things that bother me. This is NC. When ordering tea we do not expect it to come in a small plastic bottle with no refills. It doesn't matter that it was bottled on site. Not a good value and not too hospitable. Also, the prices are very high. I am so incredibly thankful that we popped into Good Hot Fish. It was probably the best thing that I ate in Asheville. If I could eat it every day, I probably would. My sandwich was excellent. Upon walking in, we were greeted by a friendly employee. She made some recommendations. The seating indoors directly in the restaurant is limited, but there is an area connected where you can also sit. it is another room. There are also a few seats outside. A few nights ago, we tried the new place, Good Hot Fish, above Eulogy and near Burial Beer on Buxton. (You walk up short stairs to the second level, or for ADA go through Eulogy.) It was opened by Ashleigh Shanti, who used to be the sous chef at Benne on Eagle, where I first had her fried catfish. We both had the catfish plate ($22 with two sides plus a couple of hush puppies.). You have a choice of breaded or battered catfish. The battered looks a lot bigger, but both have about the same amount of fish. I had fries and greens with my plate. My companion had fried pork rinds and greens. The greens (collards with ham the night we were there) were great. Some people really like the fries. I thought they were okay. Canned beers and sodas. Only about five or six items on the menu so far. You order and pay at the counter and then either take out (seems like a lot of people were taking out to eat at a nearby brewery) or on one of the stools at the two counters. Good Hot Fish says it's an 18-stool fish camp, but we counted just 12 stools. It's a really small place, but all new and clean and with a staff of about five people working hard, and it stays fairly busy, despite the prices, which seem a little high for this kind of place. The fish sandwich on white bread (toasted on one side) is $18 with no sides. Bottom line: Folks are nice, and the catfish was pretty darn good. Nice folks here, and it's is already quite popular, with a number of repeat customers the evening we were there. I think if they expand their menu a little, in better weather maybe set up some tables outside and lower their prices by about 20% this place would be gangbusters full all the time. With two fish plates, two beers and tax and tip, our tab came to $60. Just feels a little expensive for the kind of place this is. We enjoyed the experience and liked the food. I'd give it five stars if it were just a bit less pricey (and if the seating were a little more comfy.) Still, I'd recommend it and would go back. read more
